Make sure your vehicle can handle the terrain. Jeep recommended for some areas past the halfway point.

Itinerary
Pa'ia is a weird, wild town full of bohemians of all stripes. You'll know you've arrive when you see a sign saying "Do Not Feed the Hippies" followed by streets full of all sorts of colorful characters. Country legend Willie Nelson even owns a house here! Note: The tour is over 70+ miles long, with more than 60+ audio stories, and takes about 2-3 hours to complete. New, Lifetime access, no expiry. Use it anytime, on any trip, as many times as you want.
The first beach you'll see is the pristine Ho-okipa Beach, a spacious state park & surfing spot complete with picnic areas & pavilions.
As you pass Mile Marker Zero and officially start your journey along the Road to Hana, you'll hear lots of history about this road, including how it began as a footpath in the 1400s!
The first waterfall you'll encounter is actually two waterfalls, aptly named Twin Falls. Make a quick stop here for some great views and great photos.
Looking to hike Maui's lush jungles? Look no further than the Waikamoi Ridge Trail, offering some stupendous scenery.
Continuing on, you'll arrive at the Garden of Eden Arboretum, home to over 700 species of plants, including some donated by former Beatle George Harrison!
Don't miss Kaumahina State Park, up next. This picturesque stretch of coastline is perfect for a picnic or a few shots few your Instagram.
Those looking for a more secluded stretch of shore will want to stop and Honomanu Bay, a black pebble beach where you're all but guaranteed to find some serenity.
As you drive, you'll come next to Nua'ailua Viewpoint, offering some great views of the more rugged, rocky parts of Maui's coastline.
Can't get enough of Maui's wild flora? Check out the Ke'anae Arboretum, up next. Once a peninsula of jagged black rock, this has now become one of the greenest places on the island!
The more adventurous sorts might want to pause at Ching's Pond, a popular cliff-jumping spot, and take a daring dive into the clear blue water. Just exercise plenty of caution if you do!
The next overlook you'll find is Wailua Valley Lookout, offering views of some of the most remote parts of this island. If you love the jungle scenery, this is a must!
A trio of waterfalls await you next, all of which merge into a single tremendous waterfall during the wet season.
Continuing on, you'll arrive at Pua'a Ka'a State Park, home to some unexpected Hawaiian critters: mongooses! Here, you'll learn about how these creatures ended up on the island and what they mean for the native wildlife today.
Nahiku Viewpoint is next, offering some of the best ocean views on the entire island. This is also right near the former home of George Harrison!
Looking to pick up a souvenir or a snack? You'll find it next at the Nahiku Marketplace, a quaint little market with anything you might be looking for.
The next botanical garden, Kahanu Garden, isn't just about plants, but also contains some truly special history. Here, you can find an ancient Hawaiian temple called a Heiau!
Next, you'll arrive at Waiinapanapa State Park, where you'll find one of Hawaii's famous black sand beaches. If you've never seen a volcanic beach before, it's a seriously incredible sight, so make sure you don't miss out on this stop!
You'll arrive next at Hana Bay, a buzzing beach with BBQs, kayaks, and plenty of crystal clear water to enjoy a swim in.
Up next is another unusual beach: Koki Beach. This red sand beach is sure to catch anyone's eye, so make sure to grab a few photos before you go!
The next beach on the tour is Hamoa Beach, where Oprah owns around 200 acres of land!
Up next is a hike to Waioka Pond, also referred to as "Venus Pool." This beautiful, secluded pool isn't just picture-perfect... it's also a fantastic spot for amateur cliff-jumping!
Those looking for a really impressive waterfall will find it at Wailua Falls. These falls are about 200 feet tall and simply must be seen to be believed.
Want a commanding view of just about the entire island? Take a trip into Haleakala National Park! This park sits atop an immense volcano, the peak of which stretches a staggering 10,000 feet above sea level!
The Pipiwai Trail, up next, features waterfalls, an incredible bamboo forest, and lush jungle scenery. Put simply, it's one of the best hikes on the whole island.
Finally, you'll arrive at the Kipahulu Visitor Center. The tour concludes here.

Helpful and insightful. You get to pick and choose Heather you want to stop or move on. The audio picks up as you drive.
I booked it with Expedia and it was a terrible waste of time and money. I am a single mom with a child planned to experience it. However, at some point the road becomes so narrow and unsafe to drive, without cell coverage and exit or safe u turn to return. The map that shows you on does not show how much until the next exit or gas station or where to have coverage. I was so scared that I returned. There wasn’t even any housing for a good length and the road was not even accommodating 2 cars while it was supposed to be 2 way road and lots of turns even could see if there is a car coming from the other lane!!! Uhhhhh! Terrible experience and not recommended at all specifically if the weather is rainy!!! They did not mentioned any of these details prior to purchase!
Excellent!! Loved it!! The guide was perfect with information and helpful places to stop.
Loved this ! Really helped to not miss a beautiful stop along the way and loved the stories!
The drive and the audio was very informative, would have loved it if the map would have connected with the audio in the car. Not sure if it was the app or the vehicle but we made due…
The Action Tour Guide for the Road to Hana was fantastic. It worked very well... as we passed a geo-located spot on the route, the audio would start automatically. Very cool technology. I highly recommend buying it... it was worth every penny spent. I will purchase on other road trips when we go somewhere. Thank you!
This was an excellent opportunity to see the island and gain some insights about cultural and historical intricacies. We only stopped at about a quarter of the stops and it took us 5 hours one way; 8 hours total. So plan on a full day's event. Also note that much of the roads are incredible views but treacherous driving.
This was FANTASTIC! As an incentive travel planner for Fortune companies, I would easily buy this many times over for self-guided tours in rental vehicles or other. THE BAD: The track kept skipping on each narration the first few seconds...not sure if this was a signal or coding issue. It would repeat the first sentence then keep going...got annoying after about 60 tracks. Hope they fix this! THE GOOD: It was auto-triggered by the geofence to begin the narration. They were short, yet had enough detail to satisfy or possibly search for more. The fact that the Narrator told you what to expect and kept in touch even when there may have been a turnoff or small stop, it was nice. You can mute or replay it as many times as you like, unlike tour guide with corny jokes. The app was very helpful, although not the perfect user-friendly version it could be knowing what "password" to input. Be sure to download this and "activate" the code/password BEFORE you get in to Paia! After that, good luck. We had about a 99% success rate using it and could easy troubleshoot what may have happened if we didn't...simply due to the geofence as you drive through the areas or double back for some that were dead ends (parks, sights, etc) and had to go back the original direction. WHAT TO DO: THE FULL LOOP! The Narrator suggested NOT to do so, BUT, if you are a SEASONED driver and are NOT scared of potential bumps, limited sight, tight turns, drop-offs...or grew up in Italy in the mountains...you'll be FINE! The "reverse" is NOT for young or scared drivers who can't deal with steep drop-offs, potholes, extremely narrow roads and more...if you're one to be in the left lane going under the MPH when it's raining...don't do the reverse...but that's ONLY for about 5-10 minutes AT MOST after you get out of Hana. Once you get past that stretch...WHICH IS TOTALLY WORTH IT; it's ALL PAVED ROADS back around! I'd say 2-5 miles of more loose gravel/rough road, then it's smooth sailing...but you WILL need to drive 5mph in some areas due to the very tight, blind corners and be prepared to BACK UP in these areas if you come across oncoming traffic...but it's only a couple times for maybe 50-100yds. SLOW and STEADY in these couple areas and that's it! If you are nervous, anxious, or one of those drivers who get ANY feeling of hesitance in roads NOT on common streets, just let someone else drive it. You will need some gut instinct and common sense to do the reverse...but the views, sight seeing opportunities and more are AMAZING and ISOLATED! I recommend NOT to drive this after dark...no lights, lots of limited sight areas (many dozens), give yourself about an hour for this reverse to do the full loop after you leave Hana. You'll see some civilization later and it's only ONE road in/out! You will literally get dropped back where you started close to Paia as there are no public roads down to Kihei area...so just plan accordingly. We left at 10am, stopped at most stops (except the Lava Tube and State Park with Admission), but stopped at the small side quests and got photos and stayed 5-10m and enjoyed the constant rainy on/off weather. We hiked a few of the trails and did the waterfalls, "Oprah's beach"...in all, we spent about 7-8 hours with the full loop quest, but could have easily been 8-10 hours had we started at 8am. So if you're one of those explorers, give yourself 12 hours for the full loop and time to stop at just about everything...if you're just wanting to say you did it, go before 10am so you can be back around ALSO: Inexperienced and rude drivers don't understand how to take turns across bridges...you'll see why when you go...so be assertive on your turn to cross or you'll get taken advantage of and have some upset drivers behind you. If you have cars behind you, pull OFF and let them pass. Don't let your sightseeing stop commerce for the locals! I would buy narrations from this Seller again!
Loved the audio when it worked. It kept cutting out even though it was downloaded as instructed. We had several parts where it was just silent. Other than that it was great to get the history of the Road to Hana
I’m so glad I purchased this instead of taking an expensive tour!!!! I could go at my own pace, stop when I wanted & the drive back was way faster
Highly recommend this tour. Gives lots of history about Hawaii and the Hawaiian culture. Follow his tips and you’ll have a fantastic day.
Great narration and to the point. Great views and mouth dropping scenes! I would like to see on the phone app a time to destination. It was hard to tell how far we were since we were on a cruise ship we had to turn back without knowing how far or how long it would take us to get back
Great timely info provided as we drove the road. We could not get the map to appear on CarPlay but audio was perfect!
Just keep driving, he doesn't talk the whole time just at certain points during your drive. The stories are great, we learned a lot and he does tell you the best places to stop along the way! At the end he says to turn back the way you came but the road does continue through. It is a bit sketchy but we made it and the views were breathtaking!
Great audio that worked perfectly! Learned a lot and saw amazing places! My only suggestion for app development is to have the actual MAP show up on car display (with CarPlay) so the driver can see it.
This was the perfect companion for our drive to Hana. It provides some additional turn offs not on GPS and gives a great history of the islands. If you are driving on your own I highly recommend this.
The points of interest were informative. We were able to navigate easily without having Wi-Fi on our phones.
We would have been lost on the Road to Hana without the downloaded tour guide. Great stories and excellent directions.
Driving ‘The Road to Hāna’ is one of the top things to do on Maui. I found a link to this download, and set it up before I left. It is 40 miles of a single road, so you are not going to get least. What a cool way to make the trip 10x more interesting. The regular stream of geo-located stores and landmarks was a ton of fun. My only suggestion is the App should make it possible to flip the queue of stories around so it works the same for the drive back. Overall loved having it along.
This was a waste of money, I followed the instructions from other reviewers, downloaded the app, and got everything ready, even drove to one of the starting points & all we heard was the welcome audio, then it didn’t work at all. Really disappointed cause we were looking forward to the experience.
This was WAY better than being driven. Rent a car and pop This on! Such a great tour at your own pace!
Really enjoyed the stories from history and pointing out all the things along the way that we would have missed otherwise.
It's totally worth the time it takes to make the trip. The natural beauty of this island is awe inspiring.
It could have been much more detailed and we would have wanted a heads up at each stop. as well as you too have missed a lot of detail just give it a little bit more.
Great audio tour and loved the GPS connection to special info and stops so we didn't have to look out for it. Highly recommend this tour!
Very well done and so fun and informative! Loved it and made a great Hana drive experience! Add seven pools to the end.
The narration synced nicely with the stops along the highway, and the history that filled the gaps was very entertaining.
We thoroughly enjoyed the audio tour! Just found it odd that the app didn’t update when we drove back from the end of the Road to Hana to give new info or at least give the correct directions. For example “turn right here” doesn’t become “turn left here” on the reverse trip. We stopped and saw so much that we would’ve missed without the app.
It was said to us that this did not rely on cellular reception. That does not seem to be the case. The tour was spotty many times throughout the drive and repeated some of stories many times. We also felt that there should have been references to a few spots along the way, like the half way point and some others.
We did not finish the tour because there was a 40 stop at 1:00 pm. We were told that it would clear in 40 minutes. Too long therefore we ended the tour and turned around and got off.
This tour is so well done. The speaker is very easy to understand, The history and stories add interest, and the drive is beautiful. We made all the stops. The sea turtles and the waterfalls were favorites. It was nice to have the flexibility to complete the tour in more than one day. Thank you for a wonderful experience.
It is good to know what the next stop will be however I felt there was too much info in between and no way to stop it
This was our first time using a self driving audio tour guide. It was very straightforward in using it. Download the application on your phone, connect it to you vehicles audio system, and follow the instructions from the tour guide. As you drive along the route, in this case ours was "Road to Hana", the narrator comes on with interesting facts. Loved it! I would do it again!
Loved the audio tour. Enabled us to hear interesting facts we would not have known while allowing us the ability to travel on our own schedule.
The tour was informative but the only issue we had is that it didn’t have live navigation. That meant if we made a wrong turn or when the wrong way there was no clear way to navigate back to the trail. The information was good and the experience was nice.
This audio guide was good and more it less knew where we were the entire way up to Hana, starting in Paia. But when we turned around to drive back, it read the same material from the trip out with no knowledge of the fact that we had already passed the locations. So we had to shut it down for the road back. Seems like it should have had more interesting facts and tidbits for the ride back, even if it didn't match the GPS. A missed opportunity. But it got us to Hana with good info and told us what to look for on the way out there in time for us to see what we wanted to see. We heard from others that the Shaka Tour might have been better.
We used this app while driving the road to Hana. It worked perfectly! We loved hearing the history of Maui as we drove. We stopped at the Island Chef for coconut shrimp. They were amazing'.
It was a nice self guided tour. I wish it had more details about the stops as we weren’t sure which waterfalls you can swim in etc and accidentally skipped the right one.
I liked the app and the map. It was easy to use and gave us the flexibility of touring what we wanted to see.
The speaker spoke about events after we had passed the places. It wasn't insync. Good information, but didn't last to the end of the road.
If you have any doubts about this audio tour purchase, please hear me out. Get it! Get it now. I was so skeptical at first, not sure if i could follow up with it the audio but It worked perfectly. We loved the stories of the culture, history and learning about the different landmarks. It even gave recommendations on where to stop for bathroom breaks and light refreshments. I can go on and on about this audio tour. But trust me you can't go wrong. The instructions I got from online search was nothing compared to the guided audio tour. I usually don't leave reviews but for this..... I had to.
Talk doesn’t coordinate with drive and you have to push the talk buttons yourself and we didn’t know when to push them. We didn’t have any idea where the points of interest were on our drive. Useless money spent.
We loved it! It was so informative and enjoyable! Our only con was that when we made a wrong turn, it didn't play the audio for a while and it skipped a few of the things it was supposed to say. Other than that, it was fantastic, worth the money, and so much more enjoyable than a timed tour with strangers. We learned so much about the history of Hawaii from this app and we highly recommended!!!
This self-guided audio tour strikes an excellent balance of information, offering just enough detail without feeling overwhelming. The historical anecdotes are engaging and provide a compelling backdrop that enriches the journey. Additionally, the narrator’s tone and occasional humor perfectly complement the scenic drive, making the overall experience both educational and enjoyable.
Didn’t know what to expect…but, loved it! On point, easy to use, great information and entertaining! Able to go out our own pace and make it our own experience!
Much better than referring to tour brochure or map guide. Timely alerts to points of interest. Interesting history anecdotes and entertaining stories. Self-starting narrative based on GPS location. Allowed hands-free driving.
I highly recommend this. The information is great and it is so helpful to have all the highlights pointed out along the way.
We did the road to Hana, it was an amazing road trip!! Start early to get the most out of the day. The road conditions were awesome!! No potholes, if you enjoy driving, it was literally 3 hours 1 direction, total of 6 and a 1/2 hours. We found the roads to be windy and exhilarating, if you like Go-Kart driving, this road is amazing! When we went, there was little to no traffic. We enjoyed every twist and turn of this road. It was fantastic. There were no road hazand, the scenic view was absolutely breath-taking! We would recommend this drive for anyone who loves to drive!! A wonderful road to drive!! Now, if you're one of those timid drivers who are afraid of corners, this is not the road for you. The self driving tour was very helpful in navigating the different points of interest and helping us to find our way there. We drove to the top first then stopped at the different points on the way down. We took our own pace learning and stopping as we did the route. The app was very informative on the history and culture of Maui. We would have liked to be able to use the app in reverse to guide us back to some of the interest points we missed on our way up. Overall, We'll worth it.
The narrator is very engaging and the history behind the culture was really interesting. It was perfect for our own self-guided tour and the cost was well worth it! Some cautions - there is little warning when a turn is coming up and we had to turn around to find the streets as they are not well-marked. Also, there were fees ($10 cash) for parking at some of the waterfall sights. That was not mentioned. Be prepared for that.
