Really good experience for a dad and son first-timing. Coordination and communication was excellent, we only booked a day ahead of time. Matt was our instructor - he had us going quickly, with a good safety briefing and form basics. 90 mins was plenty for us - starting catching and riding waves in first two attempts, surfing at Chun’s Reef. Highly recommend- great value. Please be ready to tip appropriately and they also had a photographer there providing nice close-up pics independently for us to buy.

I got my moneys worth out of the lessons and the instructor made it fun and worth the trip. Very great experience all round.
Very nice instructors and took their time teaching us. They were fun to talk to and surfing was super easy with their help.
The most epic day ever! We had some girls in our group who had surf before however I hadn’t. I have always had a HUGE fear of the ocean and I didn’t think I’d ever SURF… my boys surf and love the water so I knew this would make them so happy. I was ready to conquer my fear. Amy was our instructor and she knew how scared I was however she was unbelievably supportive and knowledgeable. Before we even got onto the water, she gave us a lesson on land. She taught me how to sit on the board, how to guide the board and rise up on the board. she taught me about the waves, what to watch for and where to be. Once she brought us out, she guided us individually towards the waves. As I sat there with her, waiting for my first ever wave, she continued to instruct me and teach me the proper way to do things. She pushed me in on my first wave, and I wasn’t able to get up right away, I think it was mostly due to fear. When I went back to her for my second wave, she explain to me what she saw, and how I can improve. I continued to take her instruction and learn from it. The next wave came, she pushed me in, and I stood up. Each time I went back to her I would explain how I felt, and she would guide me. I finally took my last ride, and I road it all the way in STANDING. The gal next to me said welcome to the ocean, we will see you back here again soon. She saw how much fun I had and a huge smile on my face, she just knew I’d be coming back. I have to say it was one of the best days of my life all because, my instructor was incredibly patient, incredibly knowledgeable and genuinely cared. I would give her higher than 5 stars if I could. Anytime I have friends/family visit and they want to learn surf, I know exactly where to send them. Thank you all so much!! I NEVER THOUGHT I’D SURF. My boys are so excited!!
We got an opportunity to surf 4-5 waves. It was a great experience if you were able to figure out how to stand. They provided feedback during the beach lesson (on land). If you are nervous about surfing or never done any board sport, I would recommend a solo lesson to feel more comfortable. The location is awesome! Love north shore. Get to work up an appetite for a food truck after.
Amazing! I’ve done a 6 surfing lesson camp before and today, in 2 hours, I was able to do much better than 6 hours of training! I got to no only stand up but ride multiple waves to the end thanks to the amazing teaching skills of Aimee! She kept it simple and practical. I would recommend Aimee to anyone trying to learn how to surf
We did a group lesson for an hour, and it wasn't part of itinerary... but we liked surfing the first time around that we wanted to try it out again, especially at North Shore. It was definitely worth it! The ladies definitely instilled confidence in us throughout the lesson and we stood up and rode those waves! Shout out to Josh and Aimee, for giving us advice when we were out in the water, also Hank for the photos! Really though, appreciate all your hard work, we hope to take lessons with y'all again if we ever visit again!
I loved it. It was a 2 hour group and I get Josh and Pipa. Both were chill and wanted everyone to do good! They were caring and when we ran into an uptight local Josh was there to make sure it was a calm exchange. They will both let you move to the bigger waves if you ask. They care and I would take this class another 100 times.
Carol and Matthew were wonderful instructors! I learned a ton and they made my first experience surfing a great one. We were in a small group, so we all got great one-on-one time with the instructors. Really great and fun experience overall!
Had an amazing time with NSSG! This was my first time surfing and they were nothing but supportive and encouraging!
Carol was a fantastic teacher. Even though we were a group of 5 she made sure to give you personalized pointers each time to help improve so you can catch the next wave. She made me feel very comfortable in the water (even though I'm usually a little anxious in the water). Highly recommend the 2 hour lesson as you will have rest time waiting your turn. Highly recommend booking with North Shore Surf Girls! Great memories.
North Shore Surf Girls instructor Jen is terrific!! She is very patient and knowledgeable. I had a BLAST and highly recommend this activity to everyone - go before you get too old.
I booked a group lesson with the North shore surf girls and it was awesome! My wife and I took a semi private lesson with them 4 years ago so I knew I wanted to go with them again this time. I was not dissapointed! Great intro and directions along the lesson. With Jen and Carols help I actually surfed most of the waves caught! Would def recommend them to anyone wanting to surf!
I had a great time surfing with North Shore Surf Girls. Carol was very informative and thorough with her instruction before we entered the water. I have surfed before this particular time, but the way Carol showed the group how to surf was much easier than what I have been taught previously. I stood up on most of the waves I attempted. There is also a photographer available that is in the water taking photographs, so you get extra great shots of your surfing!
I had a great time with the surfing lesson. This particular day had a higher swell causing conditions to be a bit more than usual. But I felt safe in their hands. I had a great experience with them. If your prone to heat rashes or easy to burn, I’d recommend wearing something long for the legs too. They provide the rashguard for the top. I would recommend this company.
Carol was an amazing teacher! It was super fun to get the lesson with her,I managed to catch a lot of waves! The experience is definitely worth the money.
North Shore Surf Girls was excellent! No one in our group had surfed before and we all caught a few waves by the end of the lesson. The instructors were all knowledgeable and gave clear instructions, and made it fun on top of that. Definitely would recommend!
Took our 13 & 17 year old daughters to the 3pm-5pm group lesson. We received a text with the address and arrived 10 minutes early. At 3:05 two women showed up wet and frazzled asking us to all sign the back of the same waiver bc they only had one left. They gave out rash guards to everyone and my daughters were last, the 13 year old got one that was too small and the 17 year old got one that was way too big. They asked the guys in the group to carry some foam boards down to the water for the lesson. The cove was super crowded with groups taking lessons. After some instructions on the sand it was 3:40 when they got into the water. There were 8 people in the group and they took them out 2 at a time to the waves, and depending on how long it took for waves to come along, the rest of the group sat on their boards waiting for a turn. Each of our girls went out to catch a wave around 4 times. At 4:45 they went back to the beach and a photographer showed them some photos he had taken of them on his laptop that he was selling for $30/person, he would send an email w a link. We didn’t buy them, the quality wasn’t great. Overall, the group lesson wasn’t worth the time or money. I would recommend a personal lesson so you’re not waiting around in the water for the majority of the time.
The instructions are broken down into steps which are first practiced on shore. You’re in the water within 30 minutes and actually catching waves shortly thereafter! It was so fun to watch our kids improve throughout the process! The instructors continued to provide valuable surfing tips and assistance throughout the lesson, helping their clients catch more waves & become more confident on their boards. The protective cove was the perfect location to learn. Hands down the highlight of our trip! The kids will now be able to tell their friends that they surfed on the north shore of Hawaii! haha
All in all, I thought the experience was pleasant. That said, I'm pretty easy. + Very nice, safe, and I was able to catch a couple of waves. - Completely disorganized. These are surfers, not so much business people. My instructor was a bit tired from working all day without really having much of a break. I understand that as I was getting tired after paddling just a couple of hours so I don't blame her. I showed up at 11:30am when my lesson wasn't until 3pm. The title of the lesson I chose on Viator said the following: "3pm Semi-Private Lesson 12:00" Already a little misleading in the title but the actual button I clicked with a time on it said 12:00pm The start date after reserving said :"Tuesday, December 24, 2019, 12:00 PM". and ALL of the information I received in details said starts at 12:pm. Other than 3pm in the original title, everything else said noon. I got there at 11:30am in case there was some extra check-in and was told it was pushed to 12:30pm. I waited, then was told to sit and listen with the 12:30pm group because I was private. After sitting through some explanation with the group, someone looked at the sheet and I was told I wasn't signed up until 3pm and asked if I could come back. I wondered why someone didn't look at the chart the moment I arrived? It was now about 1:15pm and now had to come back at 3pm. The two hour class had turned into an all day event. Luckily I did not really have other plans. My recommendation would be to send a validation of the time with the text message confirmation (I was asked if I received the text. I did, but it did not include a time, only an address and a google maps link that didn't work.) Ask for everyone's name as they approach and validate it with the scheduled chart immediately. Once validated, tell them what they have to fill out, what clothing options you have, how long until their session starts, briefing on what will be taught on dry ground, surfing etiquette, based on how many people are in class, how many runs each are likely to get and when they should expect to head back into the beach when done. As an instructor myself in a different capacity, A nice overview of what to expect during the entire class without getting to deep sets the stage and causes less confusion.
Great lesson, we had a good instructor and fun group. Hope to come back and do it again next time I'm here.
Had an incredibly fun time learning to surf! Loved that we didn’t spend a lot of time on land and went into the water for the majority of the lesson. The north shore I felt was a great place to learn with the wave conditions. Carol specifically was very friendly and very knowledgeable. Would highly recommend for beginner surfers!
Carol and Mikala were great instructors! They were very patient and walked me through the best methods to surf, I definitely appreciate their ability to keep calm and keep us safe while the waves were crashing around us. Thank you for a great experience and I would definitely recommend you to anyone who's looking to surf in Hawaii 😁.
Carol led our kiddos group session and she was phenomenal from start to finish. She got our kids in the water quickly without an extended beach lesson. By the end of the first hr, both kids had successfully surfed and our oldest was able to surf on both the beginner board and a shorter board.
These ladies are amazing! We are on a three family vacation and wanted our 6 teens to have surf lessons. Their instruction was clear and all 6 teens where able to stand up and ride a wave which was an incredible moment. This has been one of the best experiences of our trip. You ladies rock!
My friend and I were on the North Shore for another friend's wedding in late October 2019. The day after the wedding we took a surfing lesson with Carol and it was one of the best things I did while I was in Hawaii. I found the shop on a list of women-owned businesses, which I always want to support, and my friend and I were interested in having a lesson with a woman. Carol does hire male instructors, but she asked us if we had a preference and then she taught our lesson herself. I'm a somewhat active 43-year-old woman but not even close to being an athlete, and I had never surfed before. It was a very small group: me, my friend, and one other woman on holiday from Germany, and we did a 2-hour lesson. Carol was fantastic! She was so patient and encouraging, and she ensured that we all had the experience we were looking for as much as possible based on our skill. After a lesson on land, we got in the water, where she focused first on making sure I could stand up (I did!) while she watched the waves and pushed me off on the good ones. Then later she helped me start to watch the waves myself to understand what to look for. If you know some basic yoga poses, it turned out that was helpful for getting into certain positions on the board. She incorporated surfing etiquette so we could make sure to stay out of the way of other surfers, though the beach we went to drew surfers with a range of skill levels, including lots of other newbies, so it didn't feel intimidating. One thing to keep in mind: if you are prone to seasickness, do whatever you need to do to counteract that, whether it's pills or wristbands or a patch or whatever. You're in the water for a long time, with waves rocking you the whole time. We had Carol's final lesson of the day (3-5 PM), and Carol stayed afterwards & chatted with us on the beach for a while, then brought out a hose so we could rinse off with fresh water (the showers weren't working), and then recommended places to have dinner. I can't imagine a better first surfing experience. Carol was fantastic, the lesson was amazing, and I would absolutely take another lesson with her again if I ever go back.
I came to North Shore to learn how to surf for the first time in my life. I booked the lesson for a 2 hours lesson and was really surprised with the result! I didn’t expect that I will learn that fast. Thanks to all the instructors! I was a little bit skeptical that I would be able to stand up during this 2 hours course. But, I was surprised that I managed to stand up on my 3rd run. Carol and her team really prepare you with technical lesson before they take you to the water. And make sure that we all get the technique right. Not only that, they also educate about the water condition and things that we need to be careful off. The team will continuously giving you feedback along the way and tell what did we do wrong and how we can improve and make it better. I decided to do my second lessons with her and her team because the progress that I made was unbelievable. And I had one of the best surfing lesson ever. It was fun, the team was great and professional, we made friends, and they also give you local recommendations for food and places to visit.
What an experience... booked a lesson last minute the night before a 9am lesson. I did a two hour lesson with a small group and it was amazing. Started off in great communication with Carol letting me know where the lesson was going to be held and confirming my lesson. Got instructed on basics and safety on land then we went straight to the water. Matt and Tosh were great and corrected mistakes as we made them. They were also a lot of fun to be around. Great company and super chill instructors.
Booked a last minute 2 hour surf lesson. Carol is an impressive teacher..... She is so in touch with teaching beginners and working to everyone’s skill level & learning pace. Only 4 in the group so she’s able to work closely with everyone. She even arranged for an in-water photographer to capture the fun. Such a great value and experience. I will definitely be back for more lessons.
We had so much fun with the North Shore Surf Girls. They were amazing, put the kids on waves right away!! They even got my wife and I to stand up. Great instruction, phenomenal people and very safety conscious! Our three boys 12, 10 and 8 thought it was the coolest thing they have done yet!! We will probably go again at the end of the week, 100% recommend.
It was a great experience! We had never been surfing before and I did not believe I would even get to my knees. The first time she told me to go I was able to get up to my feet even if it was not for long. I tried 11 waves and was able to get to my feet on 7 of them! I highly recommend! We went in the afternoon, but book in the morning though as I was told afternoon the waves and currents are a lot more difficult!
A group of three adults and two young children, 3 and 6 who have never surfed before. Had an amazing time! Carol was so great and even had the kids on the surfboard with her for two whole hours and they loved every minute of it. Such a great learning experience and all the teachers were amazing. Honestly the best day in Hawaii! 100 percent recommend! Also, photos came out amazing so thank you for those as well!
Had a wonderful experience with the team from North Shore girls today. Booked a Family lesson for my 9 and 11 year old and the team who looked after them were wonderful. Both came out beaming, and wanting to surf again!. My littlest who is 7 we booked for a tandem lesson - he went in the supplied life vest and loved his time in and off the board. Everything was safe and well organised. Unlike every other operator on the beach the girls had a pop up shelter, seats for the parents and were well organised, with plenty of equipment. Will certainly be back.. We would be back tomorrow if the kids had their way!
An absolutely awesome day up on the North Shore with the team from NSSG. The boys and I (10,9) certainly had a morning to remember. The team were very helpful and made life easy for us novices. The swell was down on the day though we still managed to catch heaps of waves and were even visited by turtles while we waited. I would recommend a private lesson if you are new to surfing for a more personalised experience
1st timer to Hawaii and 1st time to try to give surfing a go as a 40year old. I signed up for a small group lesson but wound up the only person to sign up for my time slot of 11am on a Thursday morning. Lucky for me to wind up with a private lesson with the amazing instructor named McCall. She was super friendly and made me feel at ease, helping me catch wave after wave to my surprise. She even had me do a trick jumping on the board and doing a 180 degree rotation still managing to stay on for the ride! I am super sore this day after but well worth it! Check that off my bucket list and maybe get a board to keep practicing. Who knows?! Thanks McCall!!
This was a great experience for us beginners . The women were great and fantastic to work with. My three girls had a blast and they wanted to do it again and go another round. Unfortunately it was our last day there 🙁. I highly recommend them to anyone wanting to learn. My girls and I picked it up quickly.
We were lucky enough to get a "private" lesson (2 of us), having booked a group lesson and nobody else joined. Our class started at 9am so it was still fairly quiet out on the water and the sun wasn't that strong yet. Tasha, our instructor, was great! At the end of the lesson we were able to catch our own waves. We definitely recommend taking a lesson with NSSG!
Never surfed before, but always wanted to. This was the chance to give it a shot at the north shore. Carol and staff were awesome. Stood up on my second wave. They helped a lot and made sure we had a good time. Would definitely recommend this place for anybody.
They were great! Everyone got up from lots of help from instructors! Chuns beach great location to learn.
If you're new and never surfed before this is probably the best place to learn! So much to say about this first awesome adventure on a board but unfortunately English is not my mother tongue. I had soooo much fun, I felt very good instructed by Carol and her team and, very important to me - safe all the time!! Thank you so much for your kindliness and professionalism, I'll never forget and of course come back as soon I made the money for my next trip to Oahu :-)
By far the most fun part of our trip to Oahu. We signed up for a semi-private lesson. Spent about 15 minutes running through safety and basic form but then was out on the water quickly. Was a little concerned since my 10-year old daughter isn’t used to the ocean/waves but we always felt very safe and she absolutely loved it. The people were very friendly and laid back and my daughter got up on her first run in. They were great with her, made her feel comfortable and we had a blast. Water was a perfect temperature, the waves were the perfect size, just incredible. A must do!!!! Pro tip: They also had a guy Hank there taking photos with a telephoto lens. Since the waves break a little far from shore, this was a great way to get some awesome close up pictures - well worth the additional cost! Thanks Hank!
Our family had a great time learning how to surf. Chad and Tasha were excellent instructors. So much fun for our entire family
If you’re thinking about this- DO IT!!! This was one of our favorite things we did in Oahu. My 14 year daughter was somewhat hesitant but she was standing confidently by the 2nd time out. Me (the 45 year old mom), I popped up on my feet now and then and fell multiple times but had a blast! Ray was our instructor (we were given the option of a female instructor) and he was so patient, fun, and kind. It actually ended up that my daughter and I were the only ones signed up for that time slot so we had a private lesson. I highly recommend North Shore Surf Girls!
On our vacation to O’ahu we wanted our two kids to take surf lessons. Blindly choosing a company we certainly lucked out. Carol was so great with our kids ages 8 and 10. She had them both surfing on their own in no time. They loved it so much they asked to do it again the following day. I highly recommend this company for sure!
Family of four with two daughters 8 and 6. This was our first time surfing, and Carol and team were fantastic. Well organized, on time, knowledgeable, and thoughtful. With there help, we were able to stand up and ride waves! 6 yr old did a tandem lesson; more expensive, but well worth it. 8 yr old was nervous, but they really helped her feel safe and confident. The girls were excited that NSSG is a woman-owned business. We’ll remember this experience for years to come. Mahalo Carol, Alexa, Kiki, Makah, Chad, and Willi (pictures)!
Our 12 and 13 year olds loved it! They saw a turtle, fell many times, instructors modified their directions to ability level
They made the experience super fun and easy! Several of us got up and standing on our first try. Thanks again!
Brought our two college students and one high schooler to Hawaii for the first time. Asked what was at the top of their bucket list and all replied surfing. Based on reviews we booked a 2hr small group surf lesson with North Shore Girls Surfing and it didn’t disappoint. Matt was helping out for the day and ended up being the perfect fit for our kids. They loved is laid back Hawaiian vibe and I loved that they were up surfing in no time. We weren’t planning on purchasing any photos, but I’m so glad they had a professional photographer there because the pictures are amazing; we ended up getting all 76 of them. Mahalo Matthew!!
Carol and Matt showed us a great time for our first time surfing lesson. My 8 and 10 year old boys had lots of fun and were up on most of the waves. Definitely get the 2 hours. We were also able to purchase some top quality action photos after the lesson. I’d recommend this to every!!
HIGHLY RECOMMEND doing this activity!! How can you not include surfing as part of your vacation itinerary?! Since there was no one in my group, I got a private lesson with Carol. Companies generally cancel if the group doesn't meet the minimum quota, so it was quite nice that North Shore Surf Girls let me keep my reserved time. My surf lesson with Carol was far beyond my expectations. She was very patient and kind as I practiced on the shore and the water. Carol was positive throughout the entire session which was encouraging when I was tired. Thanks Carol! Make sure you don’t miss this one!
