My husband and I very much enjoyed our surf lesson with Derek! He was super helpful in providing us with all the tips and making it a fun experience for us both. We would definitely recommend these surf lessons with Derek to everyone.

Great experience! Pauly was our instructor for my 2 boys (age 10 and 13) - he was amazing! Thank you to everyone there! Mahalo!
I had such a great experience with this surfing company! Our instructor was incredibly friendly and patient, taking the time to make sure everyone in our group felt comfortable and supported. He did everything he could to help each of us catch a good wave and made sure we had multiple chances to try. You can really tell he cares about his students having a fun and successful time out on the water. Highly recommend!
Must do. The beach boys will walk you through it. The site bot wants 100 characters, I already said it all..............
Cody was a fantastic instructor and he was very good about teaching proper technique, form, etc, when surfing. I would highly recommend this experience for anyone who is visiting Honolulu.
Total rip off. They were trying to sell the solo learning package at 179 for 2 people with one instructor. On top of it, they wanted to charge money for surf gear and water sport shoes. When we challenged them as other places cover, they said that we do not need it as the surfing will be on sand beach and not the reef ones. However, during the instructions, the coach mentioned that water shoes are advisable as the surfing will be reef area. If anyone is looking for surfing lessons, we highly recommend Ohana Surf project. They were much better managed, organized, covered all the necessary gears with in the package and were cheaper also. THIS PLACE IS A RIP OFF!!!!
Patient, considerate, and pleasant; best way I can think to describe the two guys that helped our group. A short walk from the shop to the beach, store has anything you need you didn't bring with you. Locker available, rent a lock or bring one and keep your stuff there, unless you have someone staying on the beach to watch it. We had 8 students and 2 instructors, so a 4:1 ratio, and they talked everyone through a couple runs each at least. Well, everyone but my wife and one other person who both said "no thanks" once we got out there, haha. Definitely need to rethink my gym routine yo, this sport takes some serious shoulder muscle endurance. Instructors did everything they could to keep us moving and hitting as much of the surf as possible to get some tries in. Small waves, but steady supply, good choice of spots to teach us newbies. Honestly I didn't make it up to my feet until the very last try while my kiddo made it on his first. I should ground him, knock him down a peg, lol. How dare he make the old man look bad. Great experience, good time, definitely recommend. Only downside is the kid wants to keep learning here at home in NYC so I guess he has a new hobby to pay for!
The surf lessons were so fun. It was our first time out and we actually stood up! They could not have been nicer or more supportive.
What an awesome experience for a first time surfing. The instructor ( Rae) was awesome and a positive attitude . . Definitely recommend. Big Dave surf.
The entire staff was great from start to finish. Paul and Sione (our surf instructors), were fantastic and patient and made the experience that much better. I would recommend Big Wave Dave at Surf and Coffee to anyone who's looking to learn to surf. I would also recommend the semi-private if you have 4 people in your group. Thank you, Team! Top Shelf service! Gary N.
Nick did a fantastic job teaching us and we caught our very first waves. The booking process was easy, Nick was awesome and we had a blast!
This was just right for my 14 year old son. He has surfed before up in ME, but it had been a couple of years since he was last on a board. Quick lesson on the sand and then he was out in the water. Not sure if the beach where they went (front of Sheraton) is always this calm, and to catch any waves, they were out a couple of hundred yards …. So photographing from the beach was not ideal. My son really liked Lee and felt comfortable with him. I felt comfortable sending my son out with him. They encouraged people to buy reef shoes….no rentals, although they do rent rashers. In any case, it is an additional $25. Worth it? Not really sure, but certainly no complaints about foot abrasions from my son, so I guess so 😀. I did notice in the reviews that people complained about the number in a group lesson. If this is one of your first times, I recommend either a private or semi private with no more than three total. You will get way more out of that lesson than in a few group lessons.
We had a great experience with the instructors. They were super fun and attentive. But we were in a pretty big group of 8 people when we had purchased semi-private lessons. It turned out to be OK.
This was my first surfing lesson. Paul was an absolutely great teacher. He adjusted the instruction to level of my ability, allowing me to progress to semi-standing on the surf board at conclusion of first lesson. Not only was Paul an excellent instructor, he was also a fine ambassador for Oahu and surfing culture in general. If you are up for surfing lessons and willing to take your chances on the vagaries of catching a wave, then you should definitely add Big Wave Dave Surf Co to your "must-do activities" list for your next trip to Honolulu.
Amazing surf lesson with Chris. The instructors do a fantastic job being super attentive and tailoring the lesson to their students. Highly highly recommend. Thanks Big Wave Daves!
This was everything I was hoping for! Chris and Lee were the instructors for our family of four (children ages 11 and 12). They set us up at the shop and then carried our boards to the beach. The lesson on the beach was quick and efficient. They were so positive and encouraging and it filled my heart as I saw the confidence build in my children. I have a bad knee and Chris even tricked me into riding a wave - I did it!!! All four of us got up and it was the highlight of our trip. Thank you Chris and Lee!
We booked this company and the Surf lessons for my 2 girls. We did last minute but They send 2 people to teach girls. The instructor Novi was very good, professional. Girls had a blast. Def recommend this. If I was not leaving that day, I would have had another lesson from Novi and his colleague. Excellent service.
First of all shout out to our instructor Diana, she was the absolute best and really made the experience for us! My wife and I got the private lesson with the video/photo package. I've wanted to surf my entire life being a skateboarder but never did since I was scared of the ocean as a kid. Figured going to Hawaii for the first time should get it off the bucket list, so needless to say my expectations were very high since this was such an important life milestone for me and man were those expectations exceeded! The check-in process was a tad confusing but after being directed around to a couple of different people we were finally checked in. They had lockers and a changing room for us which was great. Then we were kinda just left to wonder what to do next since the person who had helped us was walking around on phone calls but our instructor Diana found us and once we were in her hands everything was great! She really made us feel like we were friends she was taking out to surf rather than a service we were paying for which is the best experience you could ask for! Diana taught us what to do on the board when catching a wave at the shop then once we were good with that took us out to the beach, grabbed boards, and started swimming out. Once we were out to the surf spot we came across Alex the video guy who also treated us like friends encouraging us whenever we'd pass. The waves were very chill the day and the weather was gorgeous. Right away I was on my board riding waves having a blast, despite being absolutely exhausted by the end I was hooked and wanted to keep going! Even my wife who won't step foot on a skateboard was able to have a great time and stood up a couple of times! Thanks for the unforgettable experience and for checking this one off the bucket list! (Photos courtesy of the video/photo package if you're curious about what type of photos you'd get)
Our two teenage girls had nothing but great things to say about Chris their surf instructor. They said he was fun, encouraging and made it an amazing experience. He gave the girls their full time and his full attention. They talked about him the whole rest of the day. All the people we encountered were helpful, cheerful and in general fun to interact with! Highly recommend!! Worth every penny!
I booked for two people, my wife and I. I should have known it would be bad from the beginning when the instructor refused to use my name even after being corrected three times in the store, and filling out forms with my name that he looked at. My name is Aaron. It's not that hard. To him I was Eric. Whatever, it happens. I didn't get his name, but had triangle tattoos up the right side of his chest. To get out to the water you needed to carry your boards through about three city blocks, barefoot and without a mask but they said it was right outside and we wouldn't need anything. Once we hit the water, I became invisible to the instructor. I mean my wife is hot, but I'm paying for the lessons, and my name was on the booking. He towed her out and by the time I caught up with them he had already gone over a lot of stuff with her, and said it was time to paddle out further. Again towed her leaving me to catch up. Catch up, and time to move again. Rinse and repeat this several times until I'm just exhausted and I have spent most of the time paddling to try and keep up with an experienced surfer and lifeguard. His sole focus was on her. She was able to at least try several waves with his instruction and she had a good time. I'm not exaggerating at all when I say the only four instructions in the water I received were "scoot back on your board", "moving over here", " Okay, this is the last wave your time is up, try to catch it" and "oh good try, better luck next time, go to shore now". When we got back to the store our locker was unlocked (they provided the lock) and our stuff was moved around from where I left it. I guess moral of the story is if you have lady bits you're going to get a good lesson, but guys are out of luck. Oh and leave everything at home/hotel. Also, hit us with a $5 shirt rental fee. Plenty of other spots that will teach so I'd look at those instead. Photo below is pretty much how the whole lesson went, me way behind and him cozied up to my wife.
My daughter"s first time surfing lesson! I had a wonderful time can't wait to do it again. I need feet protection slliper , water shose ...etc . to walk from the office to the beach .
59 years old and always wanted to surf at Waikiki beach. Never surfed before but the instructors at Big Wave Daves got me up on the board, and even better got a picture as proof. Dream come true for me. Thank you for a wonderful time.
I was very nervous about my first surf lesson as I’m not the strongest swimmer or the most confident person in the ocean. However, the experience surpassed all my expectations and was so enjoyable that I didn’t want it to finish! The instructors are very professional and make you feel incredibly safe out in the water and no matter what kind of level of surfing you’re at - you are guaranteed to stand up on the board at least once! An absolute must-do when visiting Hawaii. It was probably the highlight of our honeymoon :-)
We absolutely loved our time out on the water with Paul! My husband and I both went out with him, and he helped us catch some great waves! We gave this a 4 though because all of the information on the website and during booking we were told that there would be a photographer there to capture our experience. However, we were not told until after our lesson that there was in fact no photographer working that day. If we had known that beforehand my husband would've taken his camera out. So we're a bit disappointed that we don't have any photos of this great experience. I would definitely wear some sort of foot protection especially if you're not familiar with the reefy waters of Hawaii.
Wonderful lesson for beginners in Waikiki, highly recommended. Just a little disappointing that the photographer didn't come at work.
We had 4 kids - ages 9,10,11, and 12 take their 1st surf lesson. From our initial phone call to the lesson with the instructors, and getting the pictures after, I was very impressed with Big Wave Dave's-- the staff was super friendly and helpful throughout. Troy and Johnny were fantastic with the kids- teaching them details and safety I never recalled learning myself 15 years ago at another surf lesson on Waikiki! They took excellent care of them and I was thrilled watching the kids actually surf....I was jumping up and down watching from the beach. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking to take a lesson! Mahalo!!
Big Dave Wave came highly recommended from friends who assured us we would be standing up within one lesson - and they were not wrong! Really easy check in, quick land session and short walk to beach. So really easy to get started. Our instructor was superb and we were literally up with the first wave! It’s pretty tiring, you have to be reasonably strong upper arm strength for all the paddling and not mind swallowing a lot of sea water but well worth it. The photos at the end are expensive but a great souvenir.
We got a surfing lesson for our sons, 22 and 17. They had a blast! They were both able to get up on the board multiple times throughout the lesson. Aleka (not sure I am spelling it right) was a fabulous instructor and was very personable. Everyone at the shop was very friendly and helpful. They even gave us beach chairs to use while we watched the lesson. This was also one of the more affordable shops.
Big Wave Dave's was just around the corner from our hotel so we went here to book a surf lesson. We found all the staff really friendly on first meet. The lesson itself was with Uncle Kevin (an absolute legend). We didn't waste much time getting into the water and within a couple of waves we were both up on the board! Great fun, great experience! Uncle KEvin was brilliant with my son! Highly reccomend. Be warned photo package is quite expensive ($100) however well worth it.
Just incredible! With the clear instructions of the surf instructor, my son (22) and I (54) actually managed to ride a few waves, even though it was the 1. Mal was and the sea pretty wild!
