This ride along tour guide app was really enjoyable to use and we highly recommend it for anyone touring the Big Island. It offered wonderful suggestions of places to visit and very interesting stories about the history of the Island. It was super easy to use and all we had to do was open the app and it would find us on our journey. It helped make the driving time fly by and offered so many worthwhile stop suggestions. Our 30-something year old kids enjoyed the app as well. Very good value for money. We will definitely use this app again when we visit other countries. Thanks Viator!

Itinerary
As the audio guides play commentary based on your gps location, you can create your own itinerary along the tour route(s) to match your interests and schedule. Or you can use our trip planners for our suggestions on half, full or multi day itineraries. Some of the many highlights are listed below;
One of Hawaii's most famous waterfalls, stunning Akaka Falls plummets a sheer 440 feet into a gorge. Access is along a 750 foot trail with lush rainforest, bamboo, ferns and some wild orchids, so it's easy to see why it's so popular. Consider hiking the added 800 feet to Kahuna Falls and for the whole hike to take under an hour. To access the falls state park, we will pass through the eclectic, ex-plantation town of Honomu, where we can make a quick stop for a baked Hawaiian treat, Big Island coffee or even visit the goat dairy.
Chain of Craters Road is the 19-mile drive that takes us from the park entrance at approximately 5000 feet elevation, all the way down to sea level. Along the drive there are many places where we see the effects of once active cindercones and lava flows. There are several excellent viewpoints with both coastal views, and specific volcanic flow rock views too. Well worth the drive while visiting Volcanoes National Park.
Devastation Trail is a very descriptive name for this relatively easy walk along a paved trail that takes us though a cinder field. We will get a nice view of the cinder cone whose Hawaiian name translates to Gushing Hill. The cinder cone is no longer active. As you walk, pick up a handful of the cinders to feel how airy and light they are, and also notice how crystals glisten in the sunlight. What will also strike you is the determination of vegetation to grow in such a desolate environment.
Halema'uma'u is the location of the crater, or caldera, that is most accessible portion of the Kilaeua volcano system. For many years, visitors could see voluminous amounts of gas rising out of the crater, a lava lake inside, whose level would rise and fall as conditions changed. After the erruption events of 2018, Halema'uma'u completely drained of lava, and the walls began collapsing into a deeper, unstable crater. But then without warning, at the end of 2020, lava and gas activity started again. The older, closer viewpoints for the crater, including the Jaggar Museum, are no longer accessible or safe, but there are still viewing areas where we can peer in and see into the crater. If you visited Volcanoes before 2018, you will be amazed by how much this area has changed. Driving on the Crater Rim Drive is still possible, going as far as the Kilauea Military Camp.
What a drive! North of Hilo, on the windward side of the island, the Hamakua Coast is one stunningly beautiful scenic drive! An abundant amount of rain keeps the rainforest a green shade of lush and the many waterfalls flowing. The Hamakua Coast includes Akaka Falls and Kahuna waterfalls, the Onomea Bay scenic drive, tropical botanical gardens and authentic towns like Laupahoehoe. Not much has changed in this area since its plantation days, though you won’t see donkeys plodding down to the shore with sugar bags strapped on either side anymore!
Hawi and its neighbor Kaapau, are the northern most towns of the Big Island of Hawaii and you will want to visit if exploring the entire island. They are small, unspoiled towns filled with art galleries, boutiques, restaurants and a popular icecream stop, all set in plantation style buildings from their sugar cane past. Kapaau is home of the original statue of King Kamehameha the Great, considered the unifier of all of the Hawaiian Islands.
Hilo is the biggest town, or small city, on the eastern side of the Big Island and enjoys a scenic setting on the shore of the bay, with a facade of wooden storefronts and copious greenspaces. It sees frequent rain showers and is therefore lush and green compared to Kailua-Kona on the opposite side of the island. It's easy to fill a day of sightseeing in Hilo and some of the key locations are included in the Hilo loop drive, Rainbow Falls, Boiling Pots and the Kaumana Lava Tube Caves. Allow 2 hours to enjoy the scenic driving loop. You might be surprised to see what celebrities from the 30's, 40's and 50's have visited Hilo over the years. In Hollywood, you get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, but in Hilo you get a fig tree named after you on Banyan Drive. Cruise by to see the 50 trees and the plaque names.
Holei Sea Arch is a fitting final stop on the Chain of Craters Road. It is easy to see how lava flows have created a sea shelf, and cliffs. Relentless pounding by the ocean waves have created an arch formation. Recent shifting and movement in the volcanic rock cliffs has meant that the official viewpoint for the Sea Arch has been closed for safety concerns. But the Holei Sea Arch can still been seen. For your safety always obey any closures that have been set up to protect the staff and public in these unstable areas.
Significant for a number of reasons; the bay is a marine preserve conservation area, a popular destination for kayaking, scuba diving, and snorkelling. It's also listed as a National Register of Historic Places on the Island with heiaus (temples) and archeological sites. Kealakekua is an important place in Hawaiian culture and history as it is the location where Captain James Cook met his demise after the first significant contact between the Hawaiian's and the western world. There is a monument to identify the historic events that occurred here. Be aware that there are some restrictions in place if you are kayaking. You must obtain a permit before coming ashore on the beach at Ka'awaloa. Consider a kayaking tour (check permits) where you'll get early access to the bay before many arrive.
Kilauea Iki is a crater within the the larger caldera area. Though the area is inactive today, a half century ago a lava lake filled the crater and sometimes eruption would shoot lava 2000 feet into the sky. The Kilauea Iki Trail is a popular moderately difficult hike that allows you get inside the caldera wall.
The Kohala Coast refers to everything that is north of the Kona Airport. It is an incredibly spectacular area, both stark and harsh, and amazingly inviting. Dry grasses take hold between lavarock outflows. On clear days, views are enjoyed all the way to the top of Big Island giants, Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea. Along the Kohala Coast we'll find most of the major resort properties. But there are also many cultural places to explore too, and those resorts have often restored and provide access to ancient trails, petroglyphs and other historic sites. Popular beaches along the coastal route include Hapuna, Beach 69 and Kua Bay. Continue following 270 north to visit the towns of Hawi and Kapaau.
Kailua-Kona is the main town of the western side of the island and has long been the popular central hub for visitors. It is located south of the Kona Airport. The historic waterfront of Kailua Bay is filled with stores, cafes and restaurants to explore and provides the energy of the town. Exploring south brings us to a fascinating mix of vacation accommodations, surfing beaches, historic churches and cultural sites. Visit the Magic Sands Park to see whether the sand is "in" or if it has disappeared offshore again. There are many coves that are excellent for swimming and snorkeling.
Located on a short triangular peninsula, Queen Liliuokalani Gardens are named for Hawaii's last reigning monarch. The gardens are of Japanese design and a tribute to Hawaii's first Japanese immigrants with arching bridges, fishponds, rock gardens, pagodas, stone lanterns and a teahouse. The setting is idyllic with views back to Hilo, the Bay and to Mauna Kea on a clear day. It's nice to either drive or stroll through the gardens.
While exploring the norther tip of the Big Island of Hawaii, continue following route 270 past Hawi and Kapaau to the end of the road. There you will find the Pololu Valley Lookout, located where the Pololu Valley and stream meet the ocean at a black sand beach. It's beautifully scenic. The hike to the beach is steep and the trail is rough and often muddy, so make sure it's something you are prepared to do before setting out. The views from the top justify the driving detour on their own!
Located on the scenic loop drive around Hilo, Rainbow Falls is easily accessible, with ample parking and paved trails that lead to the viewing platform. Many of Hawaii's waterfalls project rainbows in the fine mist spray, but these 80 foot falls and 100 feet across, are spectacular in both sunny and rainy conditions. The best rainbow effect occurs around 10am on sunny mornings. The falls are also an important cultural site and location of the Hawaiian legends surrounding Hina, mother of Maui and a giant lizard named Mo‘o Kuna. Continue the loop drive past Rainbow Falls for the Boiling Pots and Kaumanu Caves Lava Tube.
By far the most famous lava tube in the National Park. Lava Tubes are a type of cave that are created when a strong lava flow evetually stops. If the lava drains away fairly quickly it leaves an empty space, or void, that is surrounded by newly created rock. Thurston Lava Tube is a substantial size, and relatively easy to explore, complete with lit paths.
Allow a full day and head to the most popular place to visit on the Big Island of Hawaii. On our travels to Volcanoes National Park from the Kona side of the island, along Highway 11, we have time to review the volcanic forces at work behind the creation of the Hawaiian Islands, or you may prefer to embrace the Hawaiian legends version. Please note with the volcanic events of 2018, areas of the Park are reopening in phases and any closures that are stil are in place are to ensure public safety. The Jaggar Museum is unlikely to reopen at its original site due to instability of the caldera walls, but viewpoints into the caldera and Kilauea Iki are open. Driving the full length of the Chain of Craters Road is highly recommended, dropping 4000 feet of elevation to ocean level. Along the way there are fascinating stops and short walks at places like Devastation Trail, Kealakomo, the Pu'u Loa Petroglyph Trail and Holei Sea Arch.
Waipio Valley is a stunning and not-to-be-missed lookout atop a 2,000 foot sea cliff. Simply spectacular! From the viewpoint, we view the location where a 5-mile long canyon finds its way to the ocean from the mountains behind, as well as extended views to more sea cliffs.

As a couple on our first trip to the Big Island of Hawaii and driving in many areas with no signal, we never felt lost or alone while listening to the GuideAlong narrater. One of us remained focused on the driving and the other helped with following the map the phone connected with CarPlay. The timing and clarity of the prompts was near perfection. We had time on the fly to decode to either follow or pass on an opportunity (scenic overlook, shopping, dining, etc.). The guide’s content was relatable, enriching and easy to follow. The person with the phone was able to easily repeat, stop or jump ahead. We know that without using GuideAlong, we would have had observed and experienced far, far less and stressed more. What we did not get to the first day, we simply picked up and resumed in the next two days. What a terrific experience!
This tour had a lot of interesting information. It was very easy to use. Just join when you can & it will give out information whenever you reach one of the location spots. At first it was weird, because it will be silent & then just start talking, but we got used to it quickly. Only once we were on a section that should have had information, but didn't. Not a big deal. Very worth the nomical price.
Easily the bargain on our trip to Hawaii! We took advantage of the driving tour 3 different days. We stopped and saw sites we would have probably not seen otherwise. We enjoyed the commentary, not too lengthy and not boring, with the narrator’s voice being pleasant to listen to.
This is a fantastic tour. Totally self paced and informative. You can do chunks of it on different days. It took us to places that we would have missed on our own but you can also skip what you want.
Really enjoyed the audio tour. Learned a lot about Hawaiian history and stops along the way we probably would have missed.
"Barry" (what we named the host) was so worth it. $20 is honestly the best bargain you will find on Hawaii, it has so much to do on it that we spent days and days following all the routes available and were very satisfied with the local recommendations, gps based history/must visits and just overall charm of the narrator. We are so happy to have found this app since we went on tours 10x-20x as expensive as this app that didn't even hold a candle to it.
Be prepared for lots of side trips with lots of hiking! We didn’t have correct shoes or bring jackets for changing weather!
Such an awesome experience. The audio tour took us to a lot of places we would have missed. Saw some beautiful sites we would have missed. Also very informative audio tour. Can’t wait to by one for our next vacation.
This is a good tour while driving around the island, it was easy to use and picked up wherever you happened to be on your drive. I provided good information on site along the way, helping you decide if you'd like to stop or pass by. Very informative about island cultural history along the route, which was quite interesting. The narrator was very good, casual and witty which made it more enjoyable.
The narrator was excellent, and this really enhanced our driving around the big island. Lots of local color and history
Loved all of the in between educational extras! Fun personality. Wish we would’ve caught on a day earlier to how it worked. The directions were a bit tricky to figure out.
This self guided tour was everything! I loved that it gave us the option to choose our own adventures. If we passed something, the tour would recognize it and move on to the next thing. It was so nice to have something that linked directly to gps for us. When we lost internet connection in the rainforest, this tour got us through to the main road. The tour guide had an awesome voice too!
Like many tourists, we rented a car to see the sights around the Big Island. I am so glad we purchased this audio tour to add to our drives. At first, I was frustrated with this app because I didn’t understand that we had to wait to pass a landmark (marked by a little dot on your map) before the guide would start talking. Then we loved it. We put like 700 miles on our rental car, and listening to fun facts about King Kamehameha and the Hawaiian kingdom, the pianolos, all the different volcanos on the island (there’s more than one!) and other information made our drives really special. Our guide even suggested a drive we didn’t have on our itinerary which turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip - the drive from the Kohala Coast to the Palulo Valley. This audio tour was great value for money.
We really enjoyed the information that the app provided during our drive around the island. Wonderful!
This is great, and we saved a lot of money from tours! As soon as we turn it on when we start driving around, the narrator starts talking. And boy, he has given us a lot of information. We drove around the island for 2 days. It has given us alternate scenic routes also. It helped us when we visited the volcanoes, waterfalls, and beaches. I think we should also purchase this when we travel to other places and plan to drive around.
This was our second guided driving tour—the first was in Kauai—and once again, it was fantastic! We drove to the Waimea Lookout and visited two beautiful beaches along the way. The narration was informative, engaging, and full of fascinating stories that made the drive so much more enjoyable. The views from Waimea Lookout were absolutely breathtaking and well worth the trip. We also had our 8-year-old grandson with us, and he was completely captivated by the stories and interesting facts throughout the tour. It kept all of us entertained from start to finish. We highly recommend it!
Our tour guide, Kevin, was friendly, knowledgeable, and incredibly helpful. Every stop along the way to Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park was amazing—from the Kona coffee tasting and the bakery to the beautiful black sand beach, scenic overlooks, and finally the National Park itself. Kevin went above and beyond to share fascinating facts and local history throughout the tour, making each stop even more meaningful. Exploring the lava cave and walking through the lava tubes were unforgettable experiences. This tour was well organized, informative, and truly one of the highlights of our trip. We highly recommend it, especially if you have Kevin as your guide!
We stayed for a little over a week on the Big Island with a car rental and this tour was perfect for the kind of tourism my family enjoys. (Go at our own pace to the places we choose when we decide.) The commentary is informative, sometimes funny, and paced well. There are places we wouldn't have known to stop, or would have stared at without understanding its significance or context had we only followed the itinerary we planned. Once you get used to the interface, the GuideAlong app is easy to use. We would turn it on any time we got in the car for the first few days and after, for each new trip. Your phone's GPS tells the app where you are and the right tour detail plays automatically. It plays in the background and you can use your phone to do other things, too. We found it easy to use, educational, informative, and trustworthy. The main thing to note is that traveling the island will suck your phone battery dry. Make sure you have a way to charge as you go.
The audio tour is fantastic. His directions are spot on. We were able to see so much of the big island of Hawaii, stuff we would have missed without it. He’s easy to listen to. He gives great facts and information about so much stuff. Highly recommended, it’s definitely worth the money.
Great way to travel and see all the great wonders of Hawaii. Informative and will definitely use this audio tour app again. Loved it.
Does not tell you where to start. However, when you get to a talking point it is very informative and great directions.
Captain Mike was very knowledgeable about all the beautiful hidden gems that the landscape has to offer. He took us in a lava tube! So cool! Then he took us to several waterfalls and he made a point to go stop when the colors of the rainbow crossed the opening of the tubes while playing the song Somewhere Over the Rainbow. It was really special. Jazzy and Liliana were amazing as well. They talked with everyone and helped everyone enjoy the trip. Just FYI, you will get wet while on the boat. It was a fabulous experience and we would do it again! Mahalo for the adventure!
It was a definite must do experience. We got to see many things that aren’t very well known to tourists! Actually got to see the lava spewing from Kilauea. Amazing…. Do it!!!
Great thing to have playing in the background driving around. Gave us a good history of the island and a lot of fun suggestions we ended up taking.
I only paid $1 for this because of rewards, but I would’ve paid the full amount. A lot of our later trip ended up being suggestions from this app that we pretty much just let play as we drove from place to place we already had planned. We also got to learn a lot about the history of the island and some culture, which was awesome.
While the guide had useful and interesting information, it wasn’t easy to find specific locations if you weren’t exactly following the recording.
The tour program was good and give some great guidance and recommendations. However, with today’s technology, the tour is not AirPlay capable and so the guidance is less effective, especially giving map directions to the attractions.
Really informative, easy to use, and made the driving a lot more fun and interesting. They named some great spots and gave good directions.
Excellent go at your own pace guide for driving around the big island and hitting all the sites you would want. Very easy to use
Three had a great time driving the South Kauai, Napoli and The areas in between. The commentary was very good and humorous as well.
We had the guide going crazy as me changes to our directions often. The guide was very informative. The only negative was having to reconnect our blue tooth connection each time we stopped in Hilo. Not easy to do with a rental car. Connection dropped on a few stops!
The tour was quite good and informative. Very interesting commentary. We traveled from Kailua-Kona to Volcanoes National Park. The only improvement we could identify would be to update the commentary to indicate that the Visitor Center at the Park is closed and won't reopen until sometime in 2027. We felt a modicum of time was wasted trying to get to the Visitor Center. We also appreciated that the narrator strongly suggested a stop at Punalu'u Beach. We had certainly heard of the black sand beach and it definitely didn't disappoint. We would have loved to see the green sand beach, but our time didn't allow that side trip.
Have great local information. Worth the amount charged. Need to follow his navigation.
The narration was great. The gentleman talking had a nice easy to listen to voice. We circled the island twice going in opposite directions each time and the narrative was different. That was very unexpected and entertaining. We thoroughly enjoyed our trip in part to the directions. I'm sure we would have missed a lot of special views and beaches if we didn't have this narration.
It was very interesting and informative. Made the long drive go smoothly. I wish there was more. It was a long drive
Interesting and informative. Provided a lot of history, directions and appropriate stops as we drove around the island. Enjoyable stories as you drive.
Enjoyed traveling around at our own pace, good directions and interesting background information.
Was very informative. Couldn’t get it to play through the car screen but just used the iPad. I highly recommend
Very bad experience redeeming the voucher. spent hours figuring out…. go with shaka guide app. Ripp off
Another tour canceled and I decided to just try the self guided one. It was perfect! Lots of good information, clear instructions and it was easy to start and stop when I wanted.
This is just what we were looking for. Great tour information on our own pace. I wish I had known that before. I recommend and we’ll look if available in outher destinations.
Narrator was knowledgeable and had a sense of humor. Detailed in directions. I also liked that the tour had different information if you were traveling on the same road in the opposite direction
We had used this audio trip service in 2022 for the National Parks in Utah, and remembered how valuable it was for learning about the environment, culture, and history. This trip was to the Big Island of Hawaii, and the audio tour was a very valuable asset to our vacation. We went with our adult kids, and we drove around the WHOLE island with our companion "Earl" (we named him because he became a part of the family!) It connected with the car audio and used GPS to know where we were to give us turn-by-turn directions. We learned so much about the history of Hawaii, culture, environment, and the special places that we would not have found on our own. We will use this audio tour whenever it is available for future vacations since we love to explore on our own! Highly recommend!
Guide had excellent information and navigation was spot on. We enjoyed the commentary and learned so much history.
This was a perfect way for us to tour the island on our own, while still having a “private” tour guide! We loved being able to go at our own pace and visit the areas we were interested in. The guide gave us options and tips but let us decide what we wanted to see and do. Just perfect!
The guide was great! The voice was very soothing and gave highlights about what we were seeing and stories while we drove. The guide also helped us know where we could park to go visit the sites on foot. The turn by turn directions were very helpful.
I did not get the audio to work. It was very hard to get help. No one would answer one number and the other number wanted to send you there. Reason found be I was on vacation and did not have my Google password which was needed to sign in. People I talked to when I got some e was very nice but coul t help me. I did get a refund😁
Narration was clear and easy to understand and VERY informative. Loved it! Learned about areas and events and history that you would not know if just driving by or maybe you wouldn’t even drive by.
This was a great way to see and learn about the big island at our own pace. We landed so much and missed our guide, who we named The Captain, when we left Kona and went to Kauai. We definitely will get another self guided tour in the future.
