The tour itself was great. Nice touches with a flower for my hair and handmade bracelet. But the driving was terrifying. Speeding on the mountain road, even passing a car, hit a couple of curbs.

Yvonne was so knowledgeable and personable. We felt well cared for and learned a lot about the island and appreciated her expertise. Jasmine was so kind and nice in setting the trip up.
After having done the Road to Hana tour in 2025 with Joe, we chose Holo Holo again for a tour to the Haleakala summit in 2026 - and our guide Gus did not disappoint! If you want to see the sites instead of having to drive to the summit yourself, this is the way to travel! Amazing views and interesting Hawaiian history!
We took a private Haleakalā Summit and Stroll tour from our cruise ship to explore and learn about Haleakalā National Park. Our guide was Jasmine, and she picked us up right at the pier with a private van. Our goal was to learn as much as we could about the park. My son wanted to earn his Junior Ranger badge. Jasmine brought the printed booklet for him, and he was able to finish it easily because she explained everything in a very fun and educational way. We hiked through Hosmer Grove, and she showed us local plants and animals. We even saw the ʻIʻiwi bird and the Nēnē (Hawaiian Goose). She told us many interesting things about these beautiful animals. Then we went all the way to the summit. It felt like another world. We learned about the silversword plant, the landscape, and the crater. It was very interesting and educational. This was the best excursion of our whole cruise. We stopped at many viewpoints and enjoyed delicious snacks. Jasmine shared amazing history, geology, and even stories about modern life in Hawaii. She grew up on the island, so she knows everything about the land, culture, and nature. We could not have asked for a better guide. I totally recommend this tour. It is worth every dollar. If I could give more than 5 stars, I would. It was the highlight of our cruise.
This was the only tour I saw that allowed for an easy hike on the Hosmer Grove trail. The hike was filled with great views. We then were given a snack and finished our drive to the summit. We had time to explore. Just be sure to dress appropriately. Yvonne (I hope I spelled that right) was a great guide who helped us get the most out of our trip.
My family and I had the pleasure of taking both the Road to Hana tour with Yvonne and the Haleakalā Summit & Stroll with Gus (June 2025). Every positive comment you read here about Yvonne and Holo Holo is 1000% true. Of course they are professional, knowledgeable, and accommodating. But they go above and beyond! Helping us rearrange schedules after flight issues, making sure our older mother was comfortable with the walking paths, and ensuring we maximized the time together to my family’s preferences were all so appreciated. We met as friends and left as family. 😀 Do not hesitate to book your excursion with these truly warm, lovely people!!! P.S. If you end up reading this, Yvonne, the saimin smell…I think I found what causes that? 🤓 Gus, Congratulations on your amazing year! 😄 Mahalo nui loa! A hui hoi! 🌸 Your friends from D.C.
We did the private summit and stroll with Joe with our family of 7 (2 adults and 5 kids) and had a great time exploring Haleakalā. Joe was a wealth of information during the entire trip and on our flight home the kids were quizzing each other with stuff Joe said during the tour and I was impressed with how much they actually heard and retained! You could tell that he really loves Maui and was excited to share this part of Maui with us first timers. We were able to hike down into the crater some, which was very cool. He guided us to a much quieter spot (except for my kids) for sunset away from the crowds and that was great. Enjoyed this tour more than I think we would the sunrise. Joe was also a fantastic photographer and took time to take some really cool photos of the family and my kids which I appreciated!
Great tour with Joe up to Haleakala! We are a NP family and were out in HI for the week (on other islands) so just spent a night in Kahului just so we could do this tour. It was so well worth it. Joe was extremely knowledgeable about the area and well traveled! We learned a lot and got some great photos (he also knows much more re iPhone photography than we did :) ) We went with our teens who enjoyed it as well. We had beautiful weather but even then, it is COLD up top. Banana bread & pineapple were perfect touch. So glad we hit this NP on our way back to the mainland.
This company and tour are highly recommended. Our driver was excellent. He was extremely knowledgeable about the island, very friendly and a great driver. It was my Wife and I on the tour in their Bronco. We were fortunate on the day we went to have clear skies and could see the entire north side of the island from the top of the mountain with a nice view of the crater. For a private tour to the top of Haleakala, I would do this one again.
Really enjoyed our private tour with Joe. Very nice guy and knowledgeable about everything on our tour. Comfortable van with pineapple and banana bread for a snack along the way. We took a bunch of pictures and will definitely use this tour company again! Don't wait to go to Maui! Tourism is in full swing since the Lahaina fire happened over a year ago.
Extremely knowledgeable and very enthusiastic about his subject. Highly recommend. Loved learning about the birds and vegetation.
We loved our private tour with Joe. He went out of his way to make our tour enjoyable. He’s very knowledgeable, friendly and accommodating. He picked us up on time, explained what our day would look like and is an excellent driver. I highly recommend this tour and if you can request Joe, you won’t be disappointed! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
We had an awesome time. Our guides were wonderful to hang out with and super knowledgeable about the island. Definitely recommend.
I don't write reviews unless the tour was really GREAT or really BAD. This tour was awesome in every way. Yvonne was the perfect guide--she is a very sweet and caring person who loves her homeland and the Hawaiian culture. She made my wife the cutest bracelet from Job's tears beads, a gift which she loves. Yvonne picked the beads from her trips to Hana. The views from the summit of Haleakala were simply breathtaking, and Yvonne knows where to go to get away from the crowds. Highly recommend this tour.
Yvonne was an excellent guide who took care of every detail. Highly recommend this tour! The summit was amazing but pretty cold so dress in layers.
Highly recommend! Great tour of Haleakala! Fun,insightful & interesting all in one! Our teen daughters enjoyed it too!
Lots of great photos from this trip. Yvonne was a great guide. She provided us with a great place to watch the sunset away from the masses. It was a little cool at the top of the mountain but not too bad. Yvonne even dropped us off near some food at the end of the tour so we could get dinner.
Great experience with short hike, Banana and coconut bread and fresh pineapple along the way. The top of the volcano is breathtaking, literally. Beautiful views and plant life.
What to say about this experience when I don’t feel words are sufficient! Let me start by saying how incredible Joe was as our tour guide. My husband was recently diagnosed with Parkinson’s and Joe was very accommodating and kind while still making the tour a lot of fun. Joe has an incredible wealth of knowledge about the volcano and Maui overall. By the end of the tour, we felt like we had made a new friend. The views at the top of the summit were awe-inspiring. We enjoyed the stops along the way and all the information that Joe provided as well. An added bonus was the banana bread and the Maui Gold pineapple provided to us as we made our way up the volcano. Jasmine was very helpful in coordinating the trip in assuring we were able to find the pick up spot as well as other support. This is a trip not to be missed with a tour company and tour guide that provides exceptional service.
Traveling with our kids and grandkids. Joe contacted us the night before to confirm the pick up time and place, which was right next to the cruise ship. He had obviously done a lot of homework, as he was able to answer of many questions skillfully. We enjoyed the short hike about half way to the top of Haleakala, learning about the land, the trees and the beautiful birds. The views of the Maui valley were incredible. The Hawaiian snack was delicious. As we had been warned, it was windy and chilly at the summit, so be prepared. The crater looks like something from Mars. While on top we experienced how quickly the weather can change here, going from clear to immersed in clouds in a very short time. On the way down we enjoyed hearing about Joe’s experiences as he transitioned from being a mainlander to a Hawaiian resident. We had a terrific time and learned a lot. I can recommend this tour and this company. (Keep in mind that not all tour companies have the permit needed to go into the national park.)
The tour was awesome. Views and vistas exceptional. Our tour guide was well informed and allowed us to ask numerous questions. Being in the clouds on a volcano was a mystical experience. Don't miss this opportunity!
We booked our trip to Maui before the Lahaina fire and decided to book excursions with locals as a way of supporting the island. The Hola Hola tours are very well-reviewed and our experience with Gus, one of the owner-operators of the business, was terrific. He is the warmest, friendliest person, full of knowledge about Maui and the sites we visited and very open about himself and his family. We took a leisurely trip up through Hale’akala National Park, stopping at Hofsen’s Grove with its amazing variety of trees, and then up to the summit, where we did a leisurely hike and took in the absolutely stunning views. We opted not to stay up there for sunset—we were chilled, even though we had packed layers—and Gus was super-attentive to our needs. He’s also a great and confident driver, which was reassuring on some of those hairpin turns.
What was great about our private tour is that our unique interests were acknowledged and met. Our guide, Joe, asked about our expectations and "wish list" and made them happen. We noticed that we had plenty of time to linger at spectacular sites and other points of interest. Joe provided excellent commentary related to geography, geology, the observatory, the history of the trees on the Hosmer Grove trail and camping opportunities in the park. We appreciated his time in spotting and identifying indigenous birds of Maui for us. Joe was passionate about preserving the heritage of Maui and made suggestions of other "must see" experiences on the island. He was professional, engaged us in discussions and was very personable. We also had communication with Jasmine of Holo Holo Maui Tours (the tour company). She responded back to us very quickly with answers to questions we had before the experience. The guided experience was everything we had hoped for and we were not rushed or had an agenda pushed on us. When we realized that we had gone over time, Joe shared that this is a positive aspect of a private tour. We had an amazing time and would like to share that Maui is open for business. Every encounter was excellent so, come and immerse yourself in the culture of Maui (and we highly recommend Holo Holo Maui Tours for those wishing a private tour experience).
Nice personal tour to and around Haleakalā. Gus was very friendly and very knowledgable - appreciate all his local insights. Highly recommend!
Wonderful private mountain tour and surrounding area for our family of 5. Jasmine (owner) has fantastic communication/customer service skills and our guide Jim was very nice and extremely knowledgeable!! Highly recommend this company!!
We did two tours with this company All the Way Around and Summit. Joe one day and Jasmine another. This is an amazing way to see the island! The personalized attention made it so we had the best coconut ice cream and the best food trucks! We were able to spend more time at the things we enjoyed and skipped the things I knew my teens would not be interested in. Highly recommend!
This was the perfect tour for our family trip to Maui. With ages ranging from 1 to 64 our group of 8 was treated with so much kindness and respect from the minute we met our guide, Jasmine. It was the highlight of our trip and she imparted so much knowledge of Hawaiian culture as well as science/geography to my children. Would highly recommend this company! I do not normally write reviews but was blown away with the impeccable attention to detail and hospitality!
Incredible, majestic, and beautiful! Simply said, this was our favorite tour of all due to our excellent tour guide, Kea. This tour exceeded expectations as we were treated with such kindness from the very first notification of our tour. We were warmly greeted and made very comfortable in our tour van. One can really feel the value and love of the land as Kea related stories and history in such an intriguing manner. He answered questions, pointed out highlights, and offered Hawaiian pronunciation hints. We laughed and visited as he was part of our family! Haleakala was fascinating and we casually hiked at our leisure. The pineapple and banana bread stop at Hoser Trail was wonderful. We were able to move at our own pace, hike as we were comfortable, stopped at incredible viewpoints, and learned so much about the area. Another highlight was the Iao Needle Lookout Trail/Valley stop! Breathtaking! Loved this tour, love this tour company, and love our guide, Kea, who made this one of our best memories of Hawaii. (Fact: the next day we took a tour from a different unnamed company and tour guide/driver to The Road to Hana. We REALLY wished Kea was our guide and driver! It was still a good tour, but the guide was an aggressive driver and a bit arrogant and dismissive of any questions asked by his passengers. We will do definitely only do tours with Holo Holo Tours and Kea, if possible!)
Thanks to Holo Holo Maui and their great guide Joe we have had an amazing trip to the Haleakalā Vulcano. The drive to it, with a stop over at the Hosmer Grove for a short stroll and stunning birds, was already great but the view at the top and in the crater is really breathtaking. Thank you Joe for taking us on a short hike into the crater and making it an unforgettable beautiful day!! If you are interested in a tour to the crater… book it at/with Holo Holo Maui Tours!
Joe did a fine job in taking us to the summit to view the sunset. He was knowledgeable and energetic and connected on a personal level. The trip has several stops, all beautiful and inspiring. Gus and Jasmine communicated in advance and I recommend this company!
While on an inter-island cruise of the Hawaiian islands, we decided to book a sunset tour to the summit of Haleakala. Our tour guide, Kea was great! He was so knowledgeable about the area, the history, and the wildlife. Haleakala itself was magnificent. Even if you are from a more northern climate, make sure you bring a winter jacket and long sleeves/pants as it does get cold, windy, and sleeting up there due to the elevation. But if you stick it out you will be rewarded with fantastic views above the clouds. The only down side is that I wasn't able to get the recipe for the amazing coconut bread.... believe me, I called around!
We went to Haleakala Crater through Holo Holo tours with Kea as our guide. It was a private tour and included only my husband and myself. My husband walks with a cane. Kea was very helpful, informative and very mindful of our slower pace. He explained everything along the way and was just a great guy to be around. 10 out of 10 for sure.
Coming to Maui in February is really great for whale watching but for any activities up on the mountain can be hit or miss. There was a storm a few days before we arrived and on the weather forecast app showed it would be raining all week. Lucky enough our tour was still on and it was such a surreal experience. Jasmine picked us up from the hotel at 1pm and we expected to see sunset by 6pm ish on that day. We got a cute mini van, spacious and clean, plenty of space for 3 of us. Along the way Jasmine had a lot of stories and history of Hawaii and each place we passed i.e Sugar museum/factory, farm land, ranch. We stopped by at the lookout since we spotted the whales on the way to Haleakala, so that's a plus. Jasmine didn't rush us at all. We were on island time. I love how Jasmine curated the whole trip like a presentation and a deep education. We learned a lot, not only Hawaii history but the mythology, folklore, the belief and rituals. I love all the stories about Pele, demigod Maui, Hina and even menehune. She also played a lot of beautiful Hawaiian songs along the way and each song related to the topics she told us about. The view changed when we got closer to the summit. It looked like we were on another planet. Since it was a wet season, we drove through cloud, rain, mist, and some part, we could not see the road at all. Jasmine drove very carefully and we felt really safe. We saw a lot of rainbows, 'i'iwi birds, the Nene, silversword, chukars.... and our misty moody sunset. This tour is one of the highlights of our trip. No one can do it better than the locals like our guide Jasmine and Holo Holo Maui Tours!! Highly recommended!
We took 2 tours with Holo Holo and both were great. Kea took us to Haleakala. A as a local Hawaiian, we learned a TON from him! Great tour. Highly recommended!
My wife and i took the private tour to the top of Mt Halakalea. Our guide took us to a far less crowded overlook to see the sunset, this gave us an almost private view, away from the crowd. We found our guide, Kea, to be knowledgeable and courteous. He did everything to make our tour enjoyable. We highly recommend him.
Dane was excellent and we only had my wife and myself on the van I can't speak more highly of Dane ( dawyne)
My wife and I had a wonderful trip up Haleakala. We booked the private tour from Holo Holo that picked us up at our hotel (you have to call them if you want hotel pick up. You can do it after you book for an additional charge. But its easy.) While you can drive up Haleakala yourself for sunset, I am reminded of all the added value you get with a tour guide. First of all, you don't have to drive down the mountain in the dark. Secondly, the driver doesn't get to see the sites on the trip up the mountain and thirdly, the trip is a whole lot more efficient with someone who knows what they are doing. Kea proved to be an excellent tour guide. He picked us up at our hotel on schedule and we remained on schedule the rest of the trip. He was relaxed and casual, but gave us a lot of insight regarding the island from the perspective of someone who grew up on the island. The tour consisted of several scenic hikes as you go up Haleakala. Hikes that I would not have known existed without a tour guide. That got us to the summit with plenty of time to walk around and take in the the crater and the clouds BELOW us. The best was near sunset, Kea took us away from the crowded summit to an undisclosed location where no other tourists lurked. We saw an amazing sunset and relaxed through dusk seeing some amazing colors. Then we got back in the van and still beat all the other tourists down the mountain. I personally have driven up the mountain on previous trip, but if you are considering a self tour, stop right now and book Holo Holo. Ask for Kea. My only complaint was that Kea only gave us a waxing gibbous rather than a full moon. He promised to do better next time.
Our family thoroughly enjoyed the outing with Gus! First of all, he's an extremely nice, kindhearted and fun person. Secondarily, he's quite clearly an expert on Maui! How wonderful to experience such a special excursion with someone able to impart such a trove of knowledge. He was great with our young kiddos. Aside from showing us the volcano, I very much enjoyed our conversations about Road to Hana, Hawaiian agricultural history, his native Brazil, soccer, childhood education, and places we've each traveled. Gus came highly recommended and did not disappoint. I would also like to add that Jasmine coordinated the experience from the get-go, and wow, what a kindhearted woman! She was so supportive concerning the fact that our daughter has a severe case of Celiac Disease and would need to be extra careful to stay away from any gluten. I just really enjoyed our correspondence via email, pre-trip, and could easily tell that I was coordinating with someone who truly cared. Highest of praise for this operation. Can't wait to recommend family and friends.
This experience was perfect. Our tour guide Kea was so knowledgeable and gave us a wonderful history lesson of the islands. The food provided and the charcuterie board we ordered through them was delightful. I can’t recommend them enough and we hope to be back and do the tour to Hana through their company next time.
Luke was just filling in for this company but for 10 months now Great job of giving us Hawaiian history Didn’t know there are only 600 full blood Hawaiians left in the world Great private tour Great snack of banana bread and fresh pineapple
Our tour guide, Dayne, did an excellent job of showing us around Haleakala National Park along with stopping at Hosmer’s Grove to walk around. He was very educated on Hawaiian history and knew his way around the National park giving us insight and tidbits on its history. He came prepared with snacks and cushioned seats for when we stopped at the summit to watch the sunset. It was a smooth drive on the somewhat winding drive up to the craters and the summits, along with stopping at every opportunity to allow us optimal photos! 10/10 would recommend the Haleakalā summit and stroll at sunset with this company and Dayne!
What a beautiful way to end the day! The Haleakala stroll & summit was absolutely amazing! The volcano was brought to life, by our exceptional guides Jasmine & Kai's knowledge & stories. I didn't know the summit sunset was on my bucket list when we signed up for this tour but it is a memory, I will treasure for a lifetime!
Wonderful tour! Kea was an AWESOME tour guide and we learned so much about Maui and Hawaiian culture from him all while taking in the most amazing views. Haleakala is truly “other-worldly”. Go at sunset and enjoy every breathtaking second of those views.
Our guide - Gus - made this tour awesome and memorable. If we did it on our own I would probably rate it 4/5, but Gus made it a 5/5. He was such a personable and experienced tour guide and a great person to talk to. In the end we kind of wished he was our guide for Road to Hana too (instead of using a different small group tour company). It was a cloudy evening so we were not sure how much we were going to see, but it cleared up at the end and we got a nice sunset. It was fun to be above clouds too. Gus started with taking us to a forest with lots of birds on the way to the summit and we really enjoyed this stop. While at the summit we did a bit of hiking (as much or as little as you'd like so don't stress about it) but of course it's not easy given high altitude. A great evening overall. Thank you, Gus!
It was wonderful to have a private tour that provided flexibility for us. Luke was a terrific guide and the scenery is breathtaking
An amazing trip with Mana. Really benefitted from his insights into the best places to stop along the way, and really appreciated having a safe driver to handle the road for us so we could focus on enjoying the day. Highly recommend!
Luke our guide was outstanding…in fact so outstanding…there was confusion on my part about pickup location…and we were late….and frankly I was somewhat rude to Luke on the phone…He took it in stride and was a thorough professional…of which later I apologized for found that I was indeed wrong….His tour was professional informative and frankly worth every penny…..but it was because we were fortunate to have him. And to boot the snacks he brought were excellent.
This tour was wonderful. It was our favorite activity in Hawaii. We had a clear day so the road up was not bad but I can see how on a cloudy day this would not be great for someone new to the road. I suggest that if you can take the tour and don't drive up. It is just safer and more enjoyable The view is spectacular on a clear day but I am sure that it is also quite impressive with clouds. I looked at a lot of tours before picking this one. This tour offers the perfect amount of hiking for people that are fit but not athletes. Once at the elevation we were able to hike for about an hour and a half or two. We are family of 5 ages 57-19 and we did well. You will get a bit tired on the way back but it is totally worth it. Since it is a private tour you can divide your time as you see fit. They are very flexible. We wanted more time around Haleakala and our driver and tour guide who was great (sorry forgot name) was very accommodating. They even took us to the airport afterwards. This is perfectly doable on your last day if you have a later flight. Ours was at 2:30 and we had plenty of time. We did not have check-in luggage though. Picture attached is of the slower ones in our party walking back. So this is what we actually saw and walked through. Amazing.
We took 3 tours with Holo Holo during our time in Maui. We toured with Luke, Gus, and Mana. All of our tours and guides were amazing. They instantly made us feel like family and took such great care of us. We got to see so much of Maui and try and see things we wouldn't have discovered on our own. Holo Holo helped us make the most our trip to Maui! I couldn't imagine doing the trip without them. Thank you Holo Holo!!! We miss you already :)
We couldn’t get a car during the summer 2021 & opted for a tour instead. We loved it! As a local girl from Oahu, I got a fresh overview of Maui’s history, culture, land, plants, animals & current events which made the tour so much more interesting. Aside from being a knowledgeable tour guide, Jasmine was personable & made us feel like we were catching up with a friend. All the tours are private which really gives you the opportunity to spend time on what you want. Definitely recommend Haleakala sunset tour, the sunset was beautiful. Even though it looked like it was gonna be cloudy, the summit was clear above the clouds. Pack warm clothes, it’s freezing at the top.
