Private Beginner Paddleboard 101 Lesson: Makena Landing!

We had an amazing time with our guide, Peg. She was so very encouraging. Our family of adult kids had gone on this trip in 2018 and now brought their significant others. I’ve gotten far more nervous in those years and ultimately chose to stay seated. Peg really helped me with my nerves and while encouraging, she wasn’t pushy about standing. Everyone else stood up and had a great time. We ultimately paddled 1.25 miles in the beautiful water. Peg took beautiful photos the entire time which are beautiful keepsakes! We highly recommend this and hope to do it again!

We had a wonderful paddleboarding and snorkeling experience in Maui! It was our first time ever paddleboarding, and we had our 12-year-old daughter with us, so we weren’t sure what to expect—but it turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip. Our guide, John, was incredibly friendly, patient, and helpful throughout the entire tour. We ended up spending about two hours on the water, and John provided the snorkel gear. Even though we’re not experienced snorkelers or particularly adventurous we felt at ease and ended up really enjoying the experience. It’s perfect for anyone looking for a fun, low-stress outing on the ocean. Our tour started at 8:15 AM, and although we were initially worried the water might be cold (July), it was actually perfect. The early morning timing was ideal, the water was calm, the visibility was good, and it wasn’t crowded. A memorable moment: my husband’s wedding ring accidentally slipped off his finger and sank into the ocean. Despite the depth, John made a genuine effort to try and find it, which we really appreciated. Peg, the owner, was also very warm and welcoming. She even shared a list of her favorite local spots around Maui, which added a nice personal touch to the experience. Highly recommend this tour if you’re looking for a relaxed, scenic, and friendly ocean adventure!

Brittney, Emily and Brody were awesome! They taught us well and made it fun and easy for us to learn how to paddle board. They were patient and very attentive to our different learning styles. The water and views were amazing. Thank you all for a wonderful time!

This was our favorite water activity of the trip. Peg was a great teacher, very knowledgeable about the ocean and islands, and fun to hangout with for a couple of hours.

Peg and Dana are woman owed business and they were wonderful with my special need child. Kind and understanding. It was a beautiful location and I highly recommend it.

My family of four signed up for a lesson with Peg and Emily. They were great and we had a wonderful time. Peg is a thoughtful and considerate instructor. She explained paddle boarding perfectly. We all were standing up on the boards in no time. Even though we fell into the water quite a bit, we had a blast because that’s a part of the fun. Emily worked with the kids and they loved hanging out with her. They were doing tricks on the boards immediately. It was a beautiful day in Turtle Town. As we were returning to shore we saw a big turtle swimming under my board.

This was a truly awesome experience. Peg has a lot of patience and is a great teacher. My wife and I both had a great time! We would definitely recommend this experience to anyone.

Husband, son and daughter-14 and 11 took the lesson. My son knows swimming, my daughter knows a bit. Husband does not know how to swim. Pam is super nice and patient and an excellent coach. All three learned to paddle in this class, kids can even stand and paddle! They also paddled to snorkling area, kids did snorkling, pam even taught my daughter how to swim. Pam also spend extra hours with kids in ocea. Kids had so much fun! Another thing is kids forgot googles. Pam texted us and dropped google to our hotel! Super nice! Really great experience!

My 10yo daughter and I went out on paddle boards with Marie and had a wonderful time. She was patient with my daughter’s nerves about the ocean and made sure both of us had a splendid time. We were lucky the winds calmed down and we were able to go. We paddled to snorkeling spot and saw lots of fish, got to touch a red pencil urchin and an octopus. Would definitely recommend this SUP tour to all. Marie also took pictures throughout the tour and edited them before sending later that evening.

The private paddle was one of the best experiences I had in my life! First, they arranged a schedule for our flight, and there was no way to express how thankful we were. When we arrived, the guides, Peg and Brittany, gave a step-by-step lesson so my family could follow and stand up on the paddle boats by ourselves. It was a fantastic experience! Peg and Brittany put our children in the front seat of their craft to keep them safe and let them paddle so that they could experience their own as well. I was also impressed by their professional leadership and consideration at the same time. There was nothing more we could ask for. Thank you, Peg and Brittany!

Pam was a great instructor! She taught my husband and me the basics and we enjoyed our time paddleboarding soooo much! We saw sea turtles, urchin, coral. The water was heavenly. Everything about the experience was amazing!

Awesomeness. Pam was an excellent instructor. I was so glad I knocked thos off my bucket list. I respect the sport Moreso now.

Our guide Pam was very mellow and supportive. I truly enjoyed learning how to paddle board. The most memorable part was seeing a turtle when I fell off the board. Great day!!

We had the best time with Lowe paddle boarding for our first time ever! It was our honeymoon and second to last day in Maui. We did just about everything we could on the island and figured we should enjoy a special activity. Boy were we in for a treat!! We thought, how could our trip get any better? And it absolutely could- and it did!! Lowe was so knowledgeable of the island, gave great instructions, recommendations, and shared stories with us. She took great amazing photo shots of us on the water and in the water with turtles and fishes! Since it was our first time paddle boarding, I was a little nervous of how strenuous the activity could be, but it really was easy (with her excellent guidance) and so much fun! The area we got to explore was so scenic and the vibes were awesome. This was by far our favorite activity. We highly recommend 10/10

Peg is simply amazing’. Great instruction. Never thought I would be able to go from sitting to standing in the ocean!! I am 53 with a bad knee and had no intention. Of standing as did not think it was possible with my limited range of motion. Great time. Highly recommend!!

TL;DR: This experience was amazing!!! Overall, we would definitely recommend that anyone considering the "Paddleboard - Private “Whale” of a Whale Watch" tour not hesitate and reserve a time with Paddle Out Maui Tours. ----------- Booking was super easy. Two days before, my wife stepped on a sea urchin and we reached out to Peg and she offered to reschedule if my wife wasn't feeling better. Peg assured us that there were other ways to paddle if my wife need to take a break. So we kept to the scheduled date and we are so glad that we did!!! The morning started off with us easily meeting up with Cole. He started with a thorough SUP 101 on land and we were off to launch from Makena Landing. I found it easy to launch and found it challenging to stand because I am used to standing sideways as a surfer. My wife on the other hand was a natural. She was had such an amazing time and her foot did not bother her at all because she was having so much fun. We saw so many whales including a couple of babies breaching out of the water. Overall, we would definitely recommend that anyone considering the "Paddleboard - Private “Whale” of a Whale Watch" tour not hesitate and reserve a time with Paddle Out Maui Tours. PS - Cole took amazing photos that we uploaded along with this review that we decided to order after we completed the tour.

Thank you to Peg and her great guides for helping us feel safe and looked after as almost all of our group tried SUP for the first time. And the amazing pictures they took made me look way more adventurous than I am IRL. A turtle sighting and a chance to hold some sea urchin were a nice bonus. The location is really close if you're in Wailea (like 5 minutes from the big hotels), but from Kaanapali it was about 40 minutes early in the morning. The landing is really packed (mostly with kayakers) but they got us in and out of the water safely. I actually started to get seasick at one point sitting on the board (happens easily to me) because the waves were a bit rough and they helped me get to shore a little early.

A great experience, Cole and Jojo were very good at explaining what to do and what to expect. We ranged in age from 74 to 9 years and they were very concerned about our safety and made it a lot of fun. We all were able to get up on the boards!!! Both Cole and Jojo were professional and very amusing.

My wife and I participated in this tour in October. Katie was our guide and she did a really good job of making us feel comfortable and teaching us the basics of SUP since it was our first time trying this activity. I would recommend this tour if you are considering SUP while on Maui.

Peg was absolutely the best. The lesson was great, but the island history was even better. The best part was the pictures that she took, absolutely fantastic and truly captured the activity. I could not recommend this enough!

Really was a private lesson...our granddaughter was the only participant. Amanda, her instructor, was excellent. Very patient. Had her up and paddling in a very short time. Peg, the owner and our primary contact, was easy to work with and went our of her way to make everything happen!! Highly Recommend!!

My husband and I live in NorCal where SUP is commonplace at Lake Tahoe and we were interested in giving it a go during our honeymoon in Hawaii. We booked a private SUP session with Peg during whale watching season and boy were we in for a treat! I think the whales took pity on me as the water was a bit rough that morning and I was battling seasickness as we worked our way to the areas the whales were last seen. Peg was very empathic and did her best to help me feel better. I am not the most coordinated person and it takes me a good 15-30 minutes to really get the hang of something, and that was my experience with SUP. Don't get frustrated with yourself - you're teaching your body new movements/motions that you're not used to. Ask as many questions as you can and don't be afraid to utilize Peg for guidance. Confidence is also key! Also: The photos that Peg took are AMAZING! Some of the best shots in all the "excursions" that we did during our 2 weeks in Hawaii.

Peg was wonderful. She was attentive and instructional and thoughtful. And very logistically-minded. She and Luna were prepared to teach and instruct our group of varied paddle boarders. They had their cameras ready and took great photos. And we saw a turtle. And they had fresh fruit and water for us as well. Very wonderful. And she had great recommendations for lunch (5 Palms) and other places.

We enjoyed our time. Luna was fantastic. Great teacher and took us for a great snorkel trip as well.

We learned how to SUP with Peg, and loved every minute of it, and benefitted from her kind and patient instruction. We were so lucky to have her as our guide and highly recommend her company. Truly excellent experience.

We had a wonderful time paddle boarding with our guide. She was very helpful. The snorkeling was a lot of fun. They provided us fruit and water when done.

Luna was assume. She was very patient and thorough. I had paddle boarded before this trip but the others had not. She provided great tips and was very encouraging. In addition she also let us snorkel and see a sea turtle!

My boyfriend and I paddle boarded for the first time with Luna, who is just a doll! We loved the private tour, as it was nice to have her full attention learning how to stand up and paddle the correct way. We cruised around the cove, then stopped to snorkel a bit, and lucked out because we saw a bunch of turtles at a ‘cleaning station.’ We paddled a little more then stopped for a little fruit and water break on our boards. I highly recommend this experience. One final note, the owner, Peg, goes above and beyond to make sure you have a good experience not only paddle boarding, but also in Maui. She offered advice on places to visit and restaurants. She’s very proud of the island and it shows!

I had no confidence going in that I was going to be able to do it, but with your very kind tutelage and beautiful personality, I had one of the most pleasant adventures in my life. You are a good instructor and I wish I could take you on all of my future adventures, whatever they might be...Thanks to Peg also, for your patience when I had to call back to double check about the directions/meeting point, was jet lagged and I forgot parts of the conversation. I am amazed at how much fun we had with Luna on our trip this morning. Even after having to wait on us, they were so friendly, patient and knowledgeable. My husband and I had never SUP'd on the ocean and she made it so fun! We saw turtles almost immediately and she got us back to shore without falling off and before a huge swell. Thank you Paddle on! Maui, we will be back!

A HUGE shout out to Peg for the wonderful SUP adventure my wife and I had. Despite being complete novices, a little scared, and there being a bit of a surf, Peg eased us into the process of getting out to the best area to SUP. Our only goals were to get "on" the board (check!), to stand-up (check!), and to enjoy the water (check!). Peg was easy going with both of us and worked with us to make sure we accomplished what we wanted to experience. She is truly a gift and we were very grateful that she worked with each of us make it a great day! A few minutes of snorkeling to see turtles topped it all off! I cannot say enough great things about Peg and know that you will have a great time if you book a tour with her.

Wonderful experience! We did the paddle board/snorkel combo as a Mother/daughter session with Peg and Luna and loved every moment. Neither of us had attempted paddle boarding before, and the one-on-one nature of this company was perfect. Luna, our guide, was an excellent teacher; patient, fun, and delightful to spend our morning with. Their attention to safety and making sure our experience was complete was exceptional. They made sure we not only learned to paddle board, but we also saw lots of fish and many sea turtles while snorkeling. Great combination experience and we would highly recommend it.

Our guide was great! Peg gives great instruction to help you stand up your first time out, giving just enough guidance to set you up for success and enough encouragement to get you to get up after you (inevitably) fall off your board. She kept us safe and made sure we had a blast. Highly recommend!

Wonderful course...we had a great time there...the instructors are really nice and experienced...kids and us had a wonderful time on the ocean...

My family of 4 (two teenagers) had a fantastic time with Peg and her crew learning how to paddleboard. Peg gave us an introductory lesson and we were up on the paddleboards in no time at all. The weather and water were perfect on the day we went out. Peg is an excellent instructor. She gave clear instructions and is very safety conscious. Shad us all talking and laughing and enjoying our time on the water in no time at all. Snacks and beverages were provided. Peg also has a camera. Our photos turned out amazing! This was definitely a highlight of our trip to Maui!

Loved Peg and Brittany as well as their professionalism. It was a great lesson and will take it on all my paddle boarding adventures. A must do in Maui!

We had an awesome time! It was my sons favorite part of the trip! Britany and Peggy are amazing! We saw a ton of turtles had great instruction and got some amazing pics! I cannot recommend this tour enough both for adults and little ones! :)

My wife and I have been looking for a good introduction to paddle boarding and this was the exactly perfect company and Brittany the exactly perfect instructor. The sea at the location, Makena Landing, was calm and safe and beautiful. Brittany was calm, patient, encouraging and really kind to us. With her thorough and easy to follow instruction we were both able to stand up on the boards and my wife who has better balance than me became pretty proficient and was able to paddle well out into the bay and back. I elected to paddle from a seated position and thanks to gray paddling tips was able to navigate as well as if I had been in a canoe or kayak. We are extremely happy with the outing and highly recommend this company - just a really outstanding experience!

I have got to give it 2 thumbs up with 2 big toes up as well. I am so thankful that our instructor, Brittany for giving us the best learning experiences. We were about 1/2 an hour late due to bad traffic, but she patiently waited for us and the best thing is we still received the full 2 hours private training instead of missing that 1/2 an hour. We will not take it for granted and we will arrive earlier in our next visit!!!! =D Brittany and Peggy both are very professional and patience towards us, total new beginners, they really focus on our safety which was why our first appointment/class was cancelled. I was so glad that they made that call. We were having so much fun and Brittany really helped me a lot in making myself comfortable as well as confident and gave us a little excursion. Not forgetting the fun photo taking sessions - It is all worth it! Overall, I am so happy with this awesome experience, I will definitely recommend them. You are in good hands and I trust that you will have a great time with them!!!! ITS A MUST GO!!! And not forgetting to say thank you, Peggy for the food recommendations. My two sisters and I went Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) last week for the first time with Brittany & Peg. We had a fantastic time! All three of us are 65+ years young (one over 72 yrs) and in various degrees of fitness. Brittany & Peg were so attentive, patient and determined to make our trip memorable. All three of us got up, paddled around out in the ocean and enjoyed every minute of it! We could see fish, beautiful coral and turtles. The ladies provided water and fresh fruit for us to enjoy while we took a break out in the waves. We could not have asked for better instructors; we felt like we'd made two new friends in no time. Best of all, they took tons of photos of all of us on our adventure, something we will treasure for a lifetime! What a great experience -- it was magical! Thank you Brittany & Peg

Neither of us had ever paddle boarded before. We had reserved the later time (9:15a) thinking if would be warmer. I talked to Peg the night before and she asked if we could make the earlier time in case the ocean didn't cooperate (seas have been a little rougher as the morning went on). We were able to do it earlier and staying warm was not an issue. Peg gave us a quick lesson on shore before tackling the surf and heading out. Overall, we had a great experience and highly recommend her. This will help us board in the future whether in the ocean or the nearby lake.

Peggy and Brittany were awesome. Very professional throughout our whole experience. Very focused on safety and proper technique when paddle boarding. Took us out into the ocean and we had the pleasure of experiencing whale watching from our paddle boards. It was incredible to be so close to the water and near such amazing creatures. Peggy always made us feel secure and also took amazing pictures with her camera that will give us memories never to be forgotten. She brought water and snacks on the trip for us. This was one of the best experiences we’ve ever had in our lives. Well worth the money spent. The pictures speak for themselves 5 stars and more.

We went out with Chris last week; this was my husband's and my first time trying SUP. We were both a little nervous, but Chris was so much fun and made us feel super comfortable. We wanted to see whales and got to do that and see some other amazing sea animals! We both had a great time - one of the highlights of our trip to Maui for sure. Thanks Chris and Peg, and the pictures were amazing as well! We will definitely return as soon as we can make it back to paradise.

My husband and I decided to try paddleboarding--a very big deal for this 50 something couple! What a fabulous time! Brittany was very patient and kind. We had so much fun! We didn't have to stand the entire time--we also paddled on our knees and bottoms (whatever is most comfortable for you). Brittany's patience and instruction made me feel more comfortable, and now I want to go again! I would highly recommend using Paddle on Maui for your paddleboarding experience!

Highly recommend Paddle On Maui! Paddleboard beginners and Brittany and Peg were patient and encouraging instructors and the experience was amazing! Sea turtles and whale sightings and beautiful scenery. Brittany was also an excellent Maui travel guide, with many good recommendations for other activities. Several nice beaches in the Makena area to visit after paddleboarding. Will definitely do it again next time in Maui!

My wife and I were looking forward to this trip and it did not disappoint. We didn’t get too close to the whale we saw but it was still a great tour. Peg was an excellent coach and guide to helping us have a successful trip. We braved some chop and made it out a couple miles as beginners. On the way back in we did some snorkeling and got plenty of great Maui recommendations for the rest of our trip. Top notch company and service!

Wonderful experience! I was not expecting to see whales! A young one swam near enough to see, a few times, curious and shy. I was really expecting to fall in (I was dressed for it :), maybe next time. Paddle on! won my confidence, I whole heartedly recommend them!

Peg is amazing. We enjoyed our very first SUP lesson and water adventure with Peg who owns Paddle On Maui. Her approach to teaching, sense of humour and experience makes her a great tour guide/instructor for anyone looking to do some water activities in Wailea-Makena area. We enjoyed it so much we booked the next day to do kayaking with her. Was enjoyable to do these activities as a private experience and to do things as we wanted. Will definitely book again next year.
