It was a wonderful experience! Our chairs reclined to look at the stars. It was 53 degrees so they gave us hot chocolate and thick coats to borrow to keep us warm while they taught about stars and galaxies forming, pointed out constellations, and took special keepsake pictures with gorgeous stars in the background!

Disappointing. Atmospherics didn’t cooperate. Offer of complementary tour at no charge doesn’t mean much if you are departing within a few days.
Pre-tour: I would advise if this is your first time in the Big Island to drive around and familiarize yourself to the meeting point. Although our start time and location changed due to weather it was still good that we drove around that day and saw which highway we were taking and what the roads are like. The tour starts at night, so keep that in mind, i would highly advise for it. Dress warmly, it gets cold. But, they do provide parkas and jackets. Make sure to pee before you go, although there is a restroom when you get there it is way more comfortable to do that in your hotel room pre tour. The tour: Dylan, our astronomer covered various topics during the tour and showed us stars, shooting stars, many constellations and telescopic photos of galaxies and nebulas. He also touched on spectroscopy, which is the technology used to visualize these galactic entities. Mind you, I am a scientist of the opposite spectrum, i sit on a microscope at work, and it amazes me that the same technology is also applied to identify bacteria through MALDI. It is insane to me how the same technology used to visualize vast galaxies is also applicable to identify microscopic organisms. Crazy, as a fellow nerd, I am mind blown. As the tour goes on the stars shine brighter, more asteroids pass by, and you will just be captivated by the starry sky. Never in my 37 years of life have i seen such a magnificent display of stars, and shooting stars. I did have 2 pending questions i wanted to ask but i felt were too nerdy, one was about the red star that was as big as the distance between the sun and Jupiter, is it dying since it’s red? And if so how long before it dies? And the other one was about meteor showers, if asteroids come from the asteroid belt where do meteor showers come from and how come they are expected every so and so years? Anyway… back to the tour, we took portraits in between the first and second half. The flash on your phone will be covered with a red film so that you can use it as a flashlight without interfering with the telescope. They show you a preview of them and it is crazy with the stars in the background. So here is the takeaway: Overall, would i recommend it? YES. Would I do it again? YES. Is it worth the money? YES. Should you tip them? YES As i remember the night sky now, it brings me to tears how beautiful it was. It reminds you of how huge this universe is and how little you are, so don’t worry too much, live your life, and enjoy every second of it. If you are going to spend money anyway, spend it on a unique experience like this, you won’t regret it.

Amazing experience. Dylan and his crew were great and gave an great talk.
Even though I actually never went on the tour with the company I need to write a review on their behalf. They were thinking of cancelling the tour due to clouds and were very communicative around that sending constant updates. I was going to summit on my own anyway for sunset (not via tour) and when I got up there, it was above the cloud line and clear. They decided to continue with the tour at a later time, but when I told them it was clear near the summit, rather than trying to 'earn the fee/make the sale' they suggested I cancel the tour, stay at summit, and offered a full refund. This was awesome and cant thank the tour company enough. Would highly recommend the company in terms of communication and integrity and I am sure the tour itself is excellent and worth the money. Because of their thoughtfulness and generousity I was able to stay near summit and get excellent milky way photos. Could not recommend this company enough based on their honesty and thoughtfulness.
Would not recommend this tour. Save yourself the money and drive up to Mauna Kea on your own. To be fair, the staff were friendly, knowledgeable, and did a good job getting everyone safely to the viewing location. We also lucked out with excellent weather. Unfortunately, those were the highlights. The experience itself was surprisingly chaotic. While the lead astronomer, Dylan, was trying to give his presentation, the photographer was constantly lining groups up for Milky Way photos just a few feet away. Between the photography, people talking, and others getting up for pictures, it was difficult to hear or stay engaged. If you're expecting a peaceful evening learning about the night sky, this isn't it. Dylan was clearly knowledgeable, but his presentation felt more like a stand-up comedy routine with astronomy mixed in than an actual guided stargazing experience. Instead of focusing on the stars and constellations we were actually looking at, much of the discussion revolved around black holes, nebulas, and other astronomy topics that had little connection to what was visible in the sky that night. It was entertaining at times, but not what we signed up for. The telescope felt especially misleading. The website advertises that one is provided, but guests never actually get to use it. Instead, we were shown images on an iPhone that were presented as if they had just been captured, only to later discover they had been taken weeks earlier. That left a bad taste and felt unnecessarily deceptive. By the end of the night, we genuinely couldn't figure out what our nearly $300 per person had paid for. The viewing location was on public land just minutes off the highway with no special access, we never looked through the telescope, and the astronomy portion rarely focused on the sky above us. In the end, it felt like we paid hundreds of dollars for hot chocolate, a folding chair, and two professionally taken Milky Way photos. Mauna Kea is breathtaking and absolutely worth experiencing. This tour, however, added very little value and actually detracted from what should have been a memorable, peaceful night under the stars.
The tour can be Mauna Kea or Mauna Loa- tour guides decides day before. We were assigned Mauna Loa. The guide was very well versed and the photographer was generous with photo opportunities. The tour started an hour late, which for some traveler's (us) made starting at 10 pm very difficult to stay awake and we had a 2 hour drive home. The telescope transfers photos to the guides phone for viewing. Was hoping for some planets- but galaxy- nebula and deep space was the theme. We are educated but not astronomers— felt it was a little beyond our needs. I prefer Mauna Kea- and old fashion star gazing.
An amazing experience where you are able to get an unobstructed view of the stars. We took so may great pictures and our guide was very good.
The stars were beyond words! Our guides were fabulous, We learned all lot and had a great time. Once in a lifetime experience, don't miss this.
This was the best choice for us. An astronomer from U of Hawaii lead it. We had our photo taken with the brilliant Milky Way in the background: amazing. They made sure we were going to see the stars by adjusting the start time for us. Their telescope was for taking photographs of deep space.
This is a great experience. The tour guide was an actual astronomer from the University of Hawaii in Hilo. Chairs and parka coats were provided. They also took a photograph of you with with the Milky Way in the background. It turned out wonderful. The tour was shorter and more focused, which was good. They waited until the clouds moved by and focused your time on the lecture and looking at galaxies and nebulas in deep space. They used a telescope that was perfect; it took actual photos of galaxies. This is better than looking through a telescope eyepiece. And you can purchase these photos! They kept me informed all the way to make sure we were going to actually have a good night to view the stars.
Our guides included an astrophysicist who made the entire evening fascinating, engaging, and easy to follow. You could immediately tell how knowledgeable and passionate he was, but what really stood out was his ability to explain complex concepts in a way that felt exciting and approachable for everyone in our group from the youngest to the oldest. James made sure we received updates on weather, ensuring maximum views adjusting our time and location to make sure we had thoughtful and meaningful experiences and photographs we will treasure. There were chairs of varying sizes, heights and recline levels, parkas as needed and refreshments: things we wouldn’t have thought of that show just how professional this operation is. The tour was not only educational, but genuinely memorable. Between the stunning night sky, the thoughtful explanations, and the guide’s enthusiasm, it turned into one of the highlights of our trip. Highly recommend this experience to anyone visiting Hawaii — whether you already love astronomy or are just curious about the stars.
Dress warm. It’s pretty chilly. The parkas they give you are great but the stars! It was so beautiful!
Honestly, I could go on this tour every night. The guides were knowledgable and fun to be around. Our evening was a little cloudy, but they worked around it and taught us about the constellations, and the photos are amazing!
Although we've been fortunate enough to visit the Big Island a dozen times over the past 16 years, this was our first time doing an early morning Stargazing event on the slopes of Mauna Kea. While we needed to have a 'decently early' departure from Kailua-Kona to make our 3:30 AM start time, the views of the Milky Way, along with several galaxies, nebulae, and a special bonus of seeing 6 shooting stars! Although the temps were in the mid 40's, this Epic group provided huge parkas, chairs and some snacks, ensuring everyone was comfortable. Since we knew we were taking this special tour, I highly recommend bringing stocking hats and gloves from home. Both the photographer and the astronomer were great to work with. The special telescope Dylan the astronomer was using provided stunning views, and the substantial information he shared during the two hour event helped us much better understand what we were observing. In advance of our tour James did a great job communicating with us. We needed to reschedule this event multiple times because we were on the island during the historic mid-March 2026 'Kona low' weather system, so we needed to reschedule this event multiple times. I highly recommend this tour; the beauty of the heavens here is simply incredible! Since this is also one of the very darkest places on the entire planet, observing the absolutely magnificent heavens from about 7,000 feet was a truly unforgettable sight.
If you are into unique experiences, this is a great call. It was dark as we made our way to the meeting point, but our guides were right where they said they would be. You will not easily find a stargazing experience like this at home. They kept us warm, shared some education, and took some amazing images. We are glad we experienced it.
While our astronomy guide was very knowledgeable and the photographer very friendly, they chose to delay starting their presentation until the last couple arrived, 30 minutes past the starting time. This delay meant that the skies clouded up and we didn't have much of a view. Had they started on time with those who arrived on time, it would have been a much better experience. In any event, even with perfect weather, I would not pay $299/person for this experience. We were with the guides 1 hour and 45 minutes. This experience is not worth the price.
If you’re lucky enough to get Dylan as your star guide, you’re in for a treat. He’s outgoing, funny, and made the whole night feel like hanging out with a friend who just happens to know everything about the sky.
It was about 47 degrees at the place where we did our observation. The view is something you won’t see in many places of the world. They provided instant hot chocolate which helped take a bit of the nip in the air. I would recommend that people bring their own gloves for a better experience ( tour provides blankets and jackets). I would recommend to anyone to layer with a long sleeve shirt, a sweatshirt and then a winter or heavy leather jacket. I recommend wearing blue jeans and maybe a light pair of thermal underwear. The pictures were taken and were very good. I highly recommend looking at other pictures and tell the photographer which view or views you would like. By wearing your own very warm clothes and not getting your picture taken with the oversized jackets is recommended for better looking pictures. The pictures only take 5-10 minutes so just “endure” the brief cold to get better looking pictures. The views are spectacular but the main reason people go is for the once in a lifetime photos. I only wish the tour had told us it takes about 24 hours for photos to be sent . We stressed out a bit because most people who came to the star gazing drove 1.5-2 hours to get there and to not get the photos would be heartbreaking. Just give them time. The different type of photos are standard (free ones) or pay a fee of 99 to 199 for high resolution pictures. I had left a review do the presenter not seeing my texts and emails because it went to his spam. Long story short everything turned out just fine in the end. Therefore my one star rating previously due to lack of response and lack of being informed has been resolved completely. I recommend it with a 5 star now. Oh I would recommend the photographer have a book of about the top 20 views people do so it helps both you and the photographer out so everyone is on the same page before the photos are taken. I had studied other pictures and told her what I wanted and she did a great job.
What an experience. We had a clear sky morning and felt we could touch all those stars. I couldn’t recommend this anyone higher than an absolute must even if you’re not that interested in space. James and Dylan made the entire two hours a fun, educating and humbling experience. Don’t let the early morning or the cold out you off, we thought we dressed in enough warm clothing only to find we were freezing, luckily they are prepared for bozos like us and have jackets and blankets and hot drinks at the ready, worth every penny!
James, Dylan and the whole team were great. Very knowledgeble. They figured out a way of finding a spot where we could see clear skies in a rainy night. If you're planning to go, bring some snow socks, boots and hats to stay warm and focused through the cold night. Their parkas and blankets are enough for the upper body. It worth every minute.
James was a wonderful tour guide. We enjoyed out expedition to Mauna Kea. The stars were amazing. Just be prepared for it to be cold up there (they provided coats, pants, and gloves for us)
Not worth the money. Asking us to drive all the way and just providing jackets, blankets and chairs. Didn’t even offer hot cocoa as others said . Over charging
This was such a terrific evening! In order to get the best viewing, the location shifted to Moana Loa - - and communication about the change was timely and clear. When we arrived at the stargazing location, James, Shannon and Dylan had set up chairs, with parkas and blankets ready for all. Dylan ‘s knowledge and enthusiasm about the universe, the traditional myths and the discoveries of contemporary astrophysics and astronomy were simply infectious! The photos (the ones Shannon took of us and the ones Dylan took of things like horse head and Orion nebulas, the Andromeda Galaxy, etc) were amazing. And just as we started to think “maybe it’s a bit too chilly out here” James brought out hot coffee, cocoa and tea. All in all, a really great evening!
The most amazing experience, especially on the night of the volcano eruption. Dillon was very knowledgeable and entertaining. I learned so much. James was a great communicator and we appreciate being away from the crowds. Ali was the best keeping us warm with jackets and hot cocoa.
This is a must see experience. We live in the country and thought we could see stars but this was incredible. The instructions will note this but it is cold. Bring a base layer, gloves and hat. The staff was incredible and knowledgeable. Shannon and Dylan were amazing. Thank yo both for such a great adventure.
We had scheduled our stargazing tour with James. He was quick to respond with texts and very informative and accommodating. He informed us that weather might be an issue but that we would be reimbursed 100%.The weather did not permit us to do the tour. It was a pleasure dealing with James.
Dylan and Malia led a phenomenal experience last weekend on Mauna Kea. The experience started a bit later than advertised, but that allowed us to get a better, more complete show. Dylan is super enthusiastic about space and the stars. He was a little corny, but I'd rather have someone super enthusiastic about their profession than someone just going through the motions. We thoroughly enjoyed his enthusiasm. Malia also did a phenomenal job arranging and taking amazing photographs, as well as the setup and the general event support. She was super nice and made sure everyone was comfortable and enjoying themselves. It's not a cheap experience, but I very highly recommend it.
Absolutely spectacular - highly recommend. We went as a family of 4, children 12 & 15. Both kids loved it as much as my wife & I - stunning views of the Milky Way and the night sky as we’d never seen it before, anywhere in the world. The evening was expertly guided by Dylan, whose love of astronomy made for a fascinating and entertaining evening. Malia is an incredibly talented astrophotographer and we have a priceless photo of our family in front of the Milky Way. A wonderful evening.
We had an absolutely unforgettable stargazing experience with Epic Tours on the Big Island. James led the tour with great care, making sure everything was smooth and well organized. Dylan was so engaged and excited to share his knowledge about the stars—it made the night feel even more magical. Malia, our photographer, was incredibly kind and helpful, making us feel comfortable while capturing the most beautiful photos. The pictures turned out gorgeous and truly captured the wonder of the night. Seeing the Milky Way and countless stars blanketing the sky was awe-inspiring—definitely one of those bucket list moments. The entire experience was more than worth it, and I’d highly recommend it to anyone visiting the Big Island.
Our star gazing experience was nothing short of phenomenal. It felt like we were in outer space. Our guide, Dillon, was very engaging, knowledgeable and funny. It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience seeing stars, the Milky Way and even a huge shooting star. My only criticism was in the lack of clear instructions as to how to access the viewing site which turned out to be on Mauna Loa, not Mauna Kea, that evening. While at first we received a text stating that the evening's session might be canceled due to weather, we never received a follow-up message as promised. So we gambled that it was on and later, about halfway to our destination, they finally got back to us. The instructions as to how to get there could have been much clearer and therefore we went the wrong way which caused us to be about 30 minutes late. However, the program itself was so rewarding that we soon forgot about the difficult drive. Also the photos came out great and serve as one-of-a-kind souvenirs. That's why the five star rating.
I loved seeing the stars. The experienced astronomer Dylan explained the telescope and the images we were viewing. He allowed for Q&A about all sorts of super interesting space stuff. I learned a lot! The photographer took a few groups aside at a time for pictures, and was very accommodating to our pose requests. Coats and blankets are provided but I still recommend wearing all your layers. We’re from Canada and even we considered it quite cold! Our tour was postponed 45 min, but they let us know in advance. The meeting spot changed after we left and we didn’t have cell service but figured it out because our group was the only one on the road and it was easy to spot the new location after driving a bit further. Check your phones regularly before departure and before arrival (if you can!) It was expensive but my boyfriend and I highly enjoyed our time and would recommend it to others! The stargazing alone was worth it.
This stargazing experience was one of the most unforgettable tours we did while in Hawaii -- truly mind boggling to see so many stars! When you arrive at the meeting point and get out of your car, you feel as if you are on another planet. Horizon to horizon you just see stars. I felt as if I was in a planetarium -- but outside. I know that this is one of those truly once in a lifetime experiences that you do not get where I live in the Northeast continental US, where you only see a portion of the night sky because of the forest. Dylan was extremely knowledgable about space and made the entire learning experience one that is digestible for the average person who may know very little about space. Would definitely go again the next time I'm on the Big Island!
I was originally not overly excited to book, but my son really wanted to. I’m SO glad we did, because this was unlike any tour I’ve been on. I’ve never seen the night sky like this—it was captivating. The spots they take you to are (literally) off the beaten path, but so worth it. The views are truly spectacular, really there aren’t any other words to describe it. And we got the coolest pics! Overall, I’m so happy we booked it—if you’re on the fence, hopefully this helps.
Changed time and meetup three times before cancelling when we were already at the last meetup stop given. I understand things happen but as they don’t have a license to go to summit or to good viewing sites a little lower then they are much more susceptible to conditions. My wife went on a different one the same night, Hawaii Forest and Trails, and had an amazing and successfully experience.
Highlight of our trip! Dylan (astronomer) was so incredibly knowledgeable and was able to find the perfect spot for stargazing! Malia (astro-photographer) was so kind and fun to work with. Her work is beautiful - highly recommend checking it out! James (owner) has been incredibly helpful in answering all my questions. We reached out ahead of our trip to find out what date they recommended for the best stargazing while we were here. Highly recommend - you won’t regret it! P.S. Be sure to bring extra layers - they have extra jackets, blankets and chairs, but you’ll want all the layers you can get!
Unfortunately I have to agree with a previous reviewer's (Overpriced Star Lecture) disappointed experience. The positives first: friendly and knowledgable hosts, good viewing spot, beautiful stars, beautiful photos. Why we would not recommend/do this again: the price of $598 for 2 people, plus $65 per high-resolution photo upgrade, is rather outrageous for what you get. For this price, we had anticipated a more private experience (our oversight for not seeing the 30 people max group listed), more photography time, hands-on viewing/telescope use, and inclusion of high-resolution photos. A mere 2 photos were offered to be taken of each person/couple plus a piece of chocolate, while Dylan gave a stand-up comedy-esque lecture. Very knowledgable and well intentioned, however his approach detracted from the experience. The cosmos is incredibly magical on it's own, the added theatrics was really unnecessary and chaotic. I understand the equipment/telescope is costly, but considering we were only offered to view on our phones via an app, it really doesn't justify putting this cost on the participants. Also, they offer parkas which we appreciated, but I'm not sure how often they are actually washed. I stuck my hand in a pocket and my fingers landed into a mush of what must have been leftover chocolate from the last person who wore it.
Absolutely incredible!!!!! I never write reviews but I had to about this experience. We have done other star gazing tours before but nothing has compared to this one. First Dillon and James were amazing! They were so knowledgeable and I learned more than I could ever ask for! They answered all questions and were so kind we felt comfortable to ask anything! We also were completely secluded from anyone else so totally dark sky. They also provided chairs, coats and blankets so it was awesome to just snuggle up and recline to look at the stars and listen. We also got absolutely incredible pictures. The milky way is so clear it looks like it was digitally edited however thats just how amazing they are at photography. We even caught a shooting star in our photo!!! We got to see it shoot by and then looked at the camera and saw it in the image! What a cool experience! Highly Highly recommend!!!!
This company has you meet at the location there is no pick up and delivery back. For me this meant an hour drive on off and on rainy, curvy mountain roads. Other companies are available for the same price that offer this option. Once I arrived I had to travel upward on a dark single curvy road to get to the meeting location. It was super cold so dress really warm. take gloves and hats if you have them and wear sturdy shoes. I would do this experience again anyway. I did think the picture of me would have been better since you can't tell who I am and the picture background is light even though it was dark. There is a falling star behind me. While there I fid see a falling star behind the speaker. Another lad seen 2 falling stars. All the other pictures sent to you have to be purchased. Those pictures are awesome and reflect a lot of what we talked about. Dylan answered every question ask. He was knowledgeable about the stars, planets, nebula, galaxies, black holes, string theory, the theory of relativity , UFO, everything astronomy you could ask for. He was very enthusiastic and definitely has passion for this topic. The hand warmer helped once we figured out how to use them for this 2 hour experience.
Such an incredible and unique experience! We were on the fence due to price and the potential for a longer drive at night but we couldn't be more glad we booked it! The details were well communicated leading up to the event and the photos are such a fun way to remember a fantastic experience! The stars were truly breathtaking. Dylan, our astrologist, was just fantastic and his knowledge was vast and contagious. I would highly recommend this once in a lifetime experience to anyone in the area!
Overpriced Star Lecture - Not a True Stargazing Experience We were really looking forward to this stargazing tour, but unfortunately, it did not live up to expectations—especially for the $684 price tag for two (including one high-resolution photo upgrade). James, who seemed very pleasant and knowledgeable, was relegated to handing out stale candy, hot chocolate, and taking pictures, as the main presentation was handled by Dylan Reader. While Dylan was certainly informed, his attempt to mix astronomy with bad stand-up comedy felt forced and detracted from the experience. Instead of an immersive stargazing adventure, we got a long cosmic lecture with no hands-on viewing. Yes, we saw some deep space images through a picture on a phone, but for this price, we expected more hands-on viewing, telescope use, and a truly awe-inspiring night under the stars. Instead, it felt more like a scripted science class with cringey jokes rather than looking through telescopes and seeing celestial objects like planets, nebulae, and galaxies in real-time. If you're looking for a true celestial experience, this is not worth the cost. For a fraction of the price (or even free), you could stargaze on your own with better results. 🌌🔭👎
Great experience. The views were amazing and the staff was friendly and knowledgeable! We had a perfect night, looking forward to the photos
The Mauna Kea Stargazing Experience was so inspiring! It was an opportunity to be in wonder and awe blanketed by the night sky in the womb of sacred land. Our three guides for our walk with the universe were so warmly professional, authentic, and uniquely shared their gifts throughout our time together. Our personal astronomer, Dylan, brought expertise, delight, and humor as he offered incredible information through a question and answer format. He clearly has a love and joy for the phenomenal experience of being a human witness to the big mystery. Malia, our astro-photographer, created an easeful and playful experience being in front of the lens amongst the magnificent landscape of Mauna Kea and the galactic womb of this world. Her photos were absolutely gorgeous and created a fantastical image to remember our shared experience. She even provided guidance on the best location to view Kīlauea as the volcano was in full eruption during our stargazing. Luke was an integral part of the entire experience, being a touchstone for physical comfort, hot cocoa, and troubleshooting when the telescope wasn’t responding. He was a joy to connect with and to share perceptions with about the magnificence of our universe. What a team! Much gratitude for bringing awe and wonder to our world. Humanity is in need of the feeling of delight in the connection of all that is and these tours and their stewards are a true gift.
Star gazing was amazing. We were not prepared for the night to be that cold but their team has warm coats , blankets which was very nice of them . Sky looked amazing . Photos taken were ok. We just think it's overpriced activity.
I had high expectations for this tour but it is not worthy due to: * they said they are going to contact to confirm time and meeting point. This never happened, i tried through mail and viator contact and no answer. Finally i managed to call (with my non US line) and i was told they were going to text me. They did and was finally sent jus a google link with the coordinates. * be aware (which i had no warning at all) that its a one lane road the last miles going up the mountain and its pitch dark. But that's the way up to the meeting point. Be careful as some cars go down and one will have to move outside the road as there is no room fot two. * the two guides (the astrophysicist Dylan and the photographer Malia) were friendly and very knowledgeable as well as funny * you spend 90/120 minutes sitting at the meeting point stargazing and Dylan talks about what we can stargaze and answer any question. Also Malia took some great photographs. But this are low quality picture which are later shared for free (jpg 150kb). If you want the HQ ones you have to pay additional USD 200. In the end this seems an expensive tour which last only 2hs and not worthy USD 300, you dont get for that price the good photos neither there are clear instructions to the meeting point I didn't expect hotel pick up but at least for this money clear and detailed instructions and also we could have gathered at the bottom of the mountain and go up together. And some nice photographs. they are probably better tours to go stargazing at Mauna Kea surroundings (which it is worthy)
Putting in a review for how transparent and trustworthy James was about issues with our date in March and a full moon. After a discussion on value and amount of time with good visibility he fully refunded our visit and we will postpone until our following trip with what we hope will be good timing!
Although we weren't able to partake in our stargazing event due to weather/clouds, the business proactively reached out to us with the challenges and gave us options.
