Maui: Two Hour Beginner Group Surf Lesson In Kihei

Great experience for beginners. Mike was a great instructor!

Mike was awesome. Good coach and great vibe. This is straight beginner or someones 1st time. Halfway through I was trying to catch the wave by myself with no help. I enjoyed it and ready to try my own waves.

The staff are amazing. They helped me and my wife stand-up surfing within the first wave. The instruction is really thorough and safe and they make sure everyone has a good time. Highly recommend.

Instructor was so helpful! He made sure the kids all had fun and they were all able to stand up multiple times which is not something that everyone can say for a first lesson. They also had a super sweet employee come out into the water and take a bunch of great pictures to capture the experience. Worth it 100%

The teachers are great! My two kids took the lessons and had a lot of fun. Both were able to stand up and ride waves very quickly.

The waves were just rolling. We got there and checked-in. After changing into appropriate surf gear (booties and rash guard), we got a quick 10 minute lesson. I had previously learned how to surf before, so this was a refresher for me. One of my friends was her first time surfing. Then we were into the water. Our instructor (Mike) was very knowledgeable about where to go. After getting us into a row, he sent us one after another. By the time we got back in line, it was time to go again. There was not a lot of people since it was towards the end of the summer season. There was plenty of open water to maneuver the board. After the lesson, we came back and watched our pictures on the computer. Our photographer (Jess) took over 170 pictures of me and my friend either surfing, posing on the board, or falling into the water. Overall, I really enjoyed my time with this surfing company and would definitely bring more new people to come to learn how to surf. Mahalo!

AMAZING! I was so nervous but where we surfed you could stand up, so even if you fell it wasn’t a big deal. Mike did a great job instructing everyone and we all were standing up pretty quickly into it! 10/10 recommend and may go rent a surf board from them on another day to keep working at it!

Even if you have never done this you should definitely try it. Really fun experience and not as difficult as you may think.

What a wonderful experience. My partner and I were very nervous but the instructors did an amazing job making us feel safe and prepared. This has been our best experience ever in Hawaii!!! I can not recommend them enough. YOU WILL GET UP AND RIDE SEVERAL WAVES!!!!

My husband and I booked this last minute and we are so happy we did. One of the best things we did while on our honeymoon. Ivan was our instructor and he was amazing. He was great at demoing and explaining everything. Also great at giving advice to correct any mistakes we were making as we were getting on the waves. Highly recommend!

We had a large group of 7 of mixed ages from 5th grade to adults. Everyone was able to stand at some point on the board. Our instructor, Sophie, was super helpful and amazing!! She was so awesome - she is the only reason I am leaving a positive review because she worked HARD! We enjoyed ourselves out in the water. Our pictures were pretty awesome too. Thanks for a great time!

The surf experience was great. The waves were perfect for learning. Both my son and daughter were able to get up on their boards and the photographer caught everything!

The surfing was fun but we did not have the best instructor, he was not super helpful especially if you are a first-timer like ourselves. He did not explain instructions very well and was not helpful once we were in the ocean what so ever. We actually had a local who helped us more. There was a photographer however and she was great. Overall I would not recommend this to someone or do it again.

This was a wonderful experience for my daughter, son-in-law, and four grandkids. The instructor was great! Everyone had a great time!!

We highly recommend using Maui Surf Shop. Our kids had never surfed before and their instructor Bear was amazing with them. He made sure they had a wonderful experience and over all it was fun for them.

I had my first surfing experience in Kihei, and it was such a great experience! I had no experience or knowledge about surfing, but Austin was an amazing instructor—very patient, helpful, and encouraging. He explained everything clearly and made me feel comfortable on the board. I learned so much and had a lot of fun. Definitely recommend! 🌺🏄‍♀️🤙

The surf lessons were exactly what we hoped. Super simple, had a great instructor (Mike) who was patient and kind. We felt super safe, even though the waves were a little bit bigger and the wind was early. The photo package was reasonable and you get all photos for keeps. Although very busy, the surf schools all work together to be sure that the groups were scheduled in such a way that everyone gets a turn, safely. The time spent in the water was perfect.

Show up ready to have fun! Super chill crew in a beautiful setting. Kihei is special and instructor was laid back but very thorough and informative for kids (mine are age 12)

Ivan was super friendly and funny. We had an amazing time, and he kept motivating and pushing us throughout the lesson. We learned a lot and had so much fun.

My teenage daughter and I really enjoyed this experience. We came in completely new to surfing. Our guide, Mariano, who has 20 years of surfing experience, did a great job of helping us progress, step by step, until we could actually surf! We had a really fun time.

Perfect for beginners! Our family of 8 were a little nervous before our session- but as soon as we met our instructors, Sofia and Austin, we were immediately put at ease. They were patient, informative and enthusiastic- getting just as excited for us as we were when we caught a good wave. This was the highlight of our trip and I highly recommend! No one in our family has ever surfed and he was able to help all of us get up a few times while we’re with him. Great experience all around.

Awesome experience. Larger group but several instructors so your actual group is smaller (mine was 3 people total) Instructors are great and you get to go at 15+ waves. Never surfed before and was able to ride a few all the way in. Surf area is walkable the whole time which helps, but deep enough where I was never worried about my falls. Shout out Sophia who was my instructor.

The crew was friendly and Bear was a fantastic instructor! I can't say enough about his patience, clear guidance, fun spirit. No one in our group had surfed before. These guys absolutely live up to the hype and all of the amazing reviews! A huge shoutout to Jeremiah and Mariano, our two instructors. Neither of us had ever surfed before, but they made the learning process incredibly easy. They quickly explained the fundamentals, had us practice on the beach, and then got us out on the water in perfect conditions. Thanks to their coaching, we were catching some smooth waves very quickly. As our confidence grew, they gradually let us venture farther from shore while constantly keeping an eye on us, offering encouragement and giving simple, effective tips that made every ride even better. You can tell these guys genuinely love what they do and want everyone to succeed. They made us feel safe and confident. This was without a doubt the highlight of our trip to Maui. If you’re even thinking about taking a surf lesson, book it—you won’t regret it. You do not need prior experience. And if you have the chance to surf with Jeremiah and Mariano, you’re in the best hands. You guys were awesome. Mahalo!

My two daughters took the lesson and were having the best time learning to surf! The staff was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable about surfing, the area and how to teach novice surfers.

One of the best experiences we had during our Hawaii trip. My daughter and I went together. My wife and son cheered us from the shore. Our instructor Mike, was so patient and helpful. My daughter was natural and got up on the board her first time. She caught a lot of waves. At age 50+ about 100 lbs heavier, and not as flexible, I was definitely not as good, but I STILL had a great time! The beach was perfect to learn on. Some sharp rocks & coral, but they provide you booties. The water depth was never high enough that your feet couldn't touch the bottom and the breakpoint consistently gave us waves that were fun enough to ride -- but not so big to scare a novice. Added bonus they have a photographer (Kylee) in the water to capture the best moments of your experience. I've added some of these to the review. Our family will treasure these memories forever. Uncle Mike did a FANTASTIC job teaching our boys to surf for the first time! They loved every minute of being out on the waves! The photos were a great extra to add on too; you won’t be disappointed if you book with Surf Shack!

This was my grandson’s activity. He was so nervous to do this but after meeting Mike and the safety lesson, he was so excited. Mike aka Uncle Mike was incredible in his instruction and making the students comfortable. For a kid that didn’t want to do it at all bc he was so scared, he was wanting to go surfing every day after his lesson with Mike. The girls that do the check in and photography was awesome too. Over all a terrific experience. Would definitely recommend it.

The Surf Shack was great, my son and I took lessons with Viking and he had us up and surfing in no time. If you’re visiting Maui you gotta hit up the Surf Shack for lessons!
