You can spend $500 and not even see the sun - much less a sunrise! There is no way to know what it will be like based on the weather forecast. The guides were good about telling us what we were seeing on the way down but the sheets of rain were still so nasty, we didn’t get out of the van to be drenched again. So if you don’t like to gamble with $500, this tour is not for you - especially this time of the year!!

This was a wonderful experience. Getting up so early and freezing on top of a volcano sounds crazy, but the display of light from the sunrise above the clouds will be a memory I will always cherish. Our tour guide Brad made the experience even better with all of his knowledge and excellent driving skills.
This was the best experience of our trip! Absolutely worth the early wake up — dress warmly because it really is cold up there. Everett was an amazing guide & made it extra fun
This was the best experience and our guide, Everett was spectacular! Breakfast was delicious and the Plantation was beautiful. Highly recommend this tour, especially if you want the best chance of staying warm up on the top…the poncho saved the day!!
Our local tour operator was Valley Isle. They were wonderful. You should dress warm because the temperature at the top is around 30 degrees. They provided warm lined ponchos as an added bonus to keep you warm. They also made sure we got the best spot to capture the sunrise. It was amazing and a must see when visiting the area. Afterwards we went to breakfast at a beautiful plantation restaurant that was included in the price and the food was delicious. I definitely would book this tour again.
This was an amazing experience and our driver/ guide Jeff was amazing. This is a very cold and windy place but this company was prepared. They had wind proof fleece capes that kept us toasty and warm while waiting for the sun to rise. There were many up close here that froze! But not us! The breakfast afterwards was amazing at a beautiful property. I would do this again, especially if Jeff could drive us!
Beautiful experience watching the sunrise over the crater. It is very cold so dress appropriately. They do face fleece lined ponchos but still need to dress warmly. Brad and Garrett were great tour guides.
Justin was an awesome guide, the whole experience from start to finish was amazing! We learned a lot about Maui and the history of the volcano and topped it off with an amazing sunrise!
Excellent experience. Great tour guides. Thank you for the poncho’s. Much needed
Absolutely do this excursion if you are in Maui. It was truly an amazing experience. The road to the top of Haleakala is extremely winding. It was nice to have a a driver that is used to driving it since it is total darkness all the way to the top. Our guides were Justin and Everett and they were very informative. Make sure to pack long pants. . I had a long sleeve shirt and a sweatshirt on and they provided us with lined ponchos and it was perfect. Had to purchase some athletic pants since I did not bring any.
The trip was excellent!!The drivers Justin and Everett were excellent, both full of knowledge and great drivers. The only reason I give to a 4/5 was the food at the end. If I’m rating just the tour part, it would be 5/5.
Honestly I did NOT want to get up at two in the morning for this tour as I’m not a morning person. I’m so glad I did! The sunrise was amazing. The experience was awesome. The breakfast afterwards was outstanding. I highly recommend this tour.
It was a great morning with a smooth pickup, perfect sunrise and delicious breakfast. Tour guide was nice and informative. Made sure we were ok.
Everett was a wonderful guide and driver. He made the trip fantastic despite the disappointing clouded sunrise. He was fun, informative and interesting! The breakfast venue was spectacular!
It started out a little stressful....the meetup time was a mixup. Viator text me a meetup time at 2am. The excursion company meetup time was 2:50am...so by the time we were at the meetup point, we couldn't locate anyone. I called and the agent on the call was not too helpful. But 20min in, Everette showed up with a very helpful attitude and apologetic and picked up us quickly. The rest of the excursion was AMAZING! We loved it. And thank God Everette had warm panchos for us! ;)
Our driver was knowledgeable and engaging. Weather was not on our side for this trip. Sunrise was overwhelmed by clouds, wind, and mist!
We had a wonderful time with our guide, Everett. The drive up to Haleakala was great, just early! It was cold up at the crater! I recommend packing a very warm coat, hats and gloves. That being said, Everett provided warm fleece coverings to everyone and they made a difference. If you have a really warm coat you won't need the fleece but if your coat is not keeping you warm, the fleece is so helpful. The morning sunrise was spectacular and a highlight of our trip. It was worth the early morning, the long ride up and the cold weather. We stopped at a really cute, and delicious, restaurant on the way back. The stop had a really cute store as well! We highly recommend this tour!
It was amazing to see the sunrise! Our bus drivers, Jeff and Everett were wonderful! They were very knowledgeable, friendly, and courteous. So glad they had fleece panchos on the bus, as it was very cold when you got to top.
Dress in layers. It was cold and windy but worth it. The sky with the beautiful colors-vibrant with oranges, pinks, and reds!
🌅 This morning, we got a glimpse of heaven. 🤍 As we stood above the clouds and watched the first light of day break across the sky, it was hard not to feel the presence of God in the beauty surrounding us. ☁️✨ The colors, the clouds, the stillness—it all felt almost too beautiful to be real. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. And the breakfast afterwards was fabulous!
We had a wonderful experience on the Haleakala Sunrise Tour! Seeing the sunrise from the top of Haleakala was absolutely beautiful and definitely a must-do activity while visiting Maui. Our guides were knowledgeable, friendly, and made the experience enjoyable from start to finish. The one area we would suggest improving is the drop-off process at the end of the tour. We were one of the last groups picked up in the morning, so we expected that we might be among the first dropped off afterward. Instead, the van drove right past our resort and continued north to drop off other guests before eventually bringing us back. This added close to an extra hour to an already very early and long morning. Since our resort was directly along the route, it would have made much more sense to drop us and the other nearby guests off as the van passed by, especially since everyone else was staying farther north. Overall, we really enjoyed the tour and would absolutely recommend the Haleakala sunrise experience. We just hope the company will consider organizing the return drop-offs geographically so guests aren’t spending unnecessary extra time in the van after such an early start.
I get motion sickness but the drive was smooth, so didnt have any issues. The long drive and early wake up were so worth it. Seeing the colors, the stars and the moon, and then the sunrise were spectacular.
Viewing the sunrise from the top of Haleakala crater above the clouds at 10,000 ft is an indescribable experience! Yes, you have to get up at 2:00 a.m. Yes, it is windy and cold but it is an experience not to be missed! Our guide and driver Brad did a great job of getting us there in plenty of time to view the sunrise as well as providing fleece lined ponchos to improve our comfort. You watch the sky as it transitions from a star filled blackness to a faint gold color appearing on the horizon followed by a brilliant flash of light as the sun rises above the clouds! Two native Hawaiian men loudly chanted a traditional Hawaiian greeting to the Sun as it rose above the horizon which made the experience tremendously moving. Following the sunrise we stayed on the summit and viewed the crater below before proceeding to a very nice prearranged breakfast and then back to our ship. Brad navigated us through the whole experience with humor and professionalism. Don't miss this once in a lifetime experience!!
This company was excellent at communicating with patrons. Pick up at our resort was very convenient. Capable drivers and very knowledgeable about the history of the area. Highly recommend!
What a mesmerising tour It was a dream come true Ausum breakfast that to served hot in such a chilly weather excellent
Jeff was a super knowledgeable tour guide. Everything was super tight. From the pickup time. To the timing of breakfast and the drop off. Very well run. And of course the experience is one I’ll never forget. Dress warmer than you think. It’s freezing on top of the mountain!
The tour was wonderful. They provided warm fleece hooded blankets which was really helpful with the cold weather at the top. The breakfast was delicious and the views were incredible. Everette gave us such great explanations and history along the way. You could do this cheaper and on your own but this was 100% worth not dealing with the hassle and having someone experienced take you. We were back in time to enjoy the rest of the day at the pool!
Super cool, amazing to see sun rise from such a height. The guides Brad and Justen were first class.
Early hour is worth getting a good spot. Don’t under dress. Gloves would have been great. This tour operator provided lines ponchos—so nice. Other operators did not. Brrrr. It was super windy.
Awesome time. The tour guides were great and informative. The beautiful sunrise is worth the early morning pickup. The breakfast was delicious.
The tour was magnificent! The guides were helpful and informative. The time spent was well worth the experience.
An incredible experience. Drivers were extremely good, commentary good, and nature won the day. Highly recommended.
We did the Haleakala Sunrise Tour with Valley Isle Excursions on August 3rd, and it was an absolutely fantastic experience from start to finish. Our guides, Jeff and Brad, struck the perfect balance for a 2:15 am pickup — they let us doze on the drive up but gently eased us into the experience with well-timed, engaging commentary. By the time we reached the summit, we’d learned about the volcano’s geology, the history of Haleakala National Park, and the unique plants and animals that call this fragile ecosystem home. The sunrise itself was breathtaking, but Jeff and Brad’s knowledge and genuine enthusiasm made it even more memorable. On the way back down, they stopped at a fantastic vantage point for photos that we would have completely missed on our own. If you’re considering this tour, don’t hesitate — Jeff and Brad are exceptional guides, and Valley Isle Excursions delivers a truly special Maui experience.
Our tour guides did an amazing job, the fact that we got provided ponchos was perfect considering the wind. The only thing I would consider when the wind was that bad perhaps we could’ve stayed in the bus and waited for the colors to start to change but in fairness they were trying to make sure we got the best possible spots. Breakfast was also a very cool spot
Just WOW! So worth waking up at 2:00 am to drive here and see the sunrise. It's definitely a spiritual experience. The tour guides all chant as the sun is rising and it gave me goosebumps. It's definitely chilly up there but it wasn't windy when we were there. Dress warm and stick around after the sun rises. The additional light really gives an additional dimension to the photos.
My sister and I had a wonderful experience on the Majestic Haleakala Sunrise Tour. from the moment we were pick up at our hotel until we were dropped off, everything was well organized and stress free. Our driver Brad was excellent. The drive up Haleakala has lots of winding roads, but he was incredibly careful and made safety a top priority the entire time, which made us fell very comfortable. Justin was also fantastic. He was knowledgeable about the history, culture and geography and we learned so many interesting things throughout the tour.
Jeff and Justin were the greatest and our family was blown away at the beauty of this experience. The breakfast at the plantation was delicious. Overall highly recommend
Dreamlike experience. We were picked up at 2.00am from The Whalers Resort. The tour was punctual, they gave us ponchos to keep us warm but suggest you wear warm clothes as it gets to minus one degrees centigrade. Photos will explain our great experience. Munir Daya
The tour guides and breakfast were both amazing. What wasn’t amazing was the fog blocking the sunrise. Check the weather for the day you’re supposed to go and make sure you’ll be able to actually see the sunrise.
We had a great time with Valley Isle on the sunrise at Haleakala tour. Abe and Everett were fantastic guides. Abe also treated us to the Hawaiian sunrise chant/song along with some other guides which was very moving. Breakfast at Cafe O’Lei was delicious and the grounds were beautiful
Truly magical! Wear your layers and enjoy! The tour company was great, we learned a lot about the area. Delicious breakfast at cafe o’lei was a big plus too!
The tour drivers did everything to prepare the group for the experience. Lots of historical knowledge and explanation in general about Hawaii and more specifically Maui. It was early and it was chilly but all was worth it when the sun broke over the high cloud layer. Every experience will be different and I am grateful that we were able to experience the brilliant sunrise on this day. A little nervous at pickup when I was told the driver was waiting for us at the location but were not anywhere to be found....situation resolved itself when the driver showed up 10 minutes later .... Not sure what that hichup was....nobody answers the phone at 2AM local which I understand.
Take lots of warm clothes with you…………………………………………………………………..,………………………………………………………….,…………..,.,,,,,,,
The clouds didn’t comply but we got some pretty photos with color before sunrise. Everett and Justin were great. We loved the history about Maui and Hawaii in general, and I particularly enjoyed the mythology. Recommend!
Highly recommend Valley Isle Excursions! Everett and Justin were fantastic—friendly, knowledgeable, and made the entire experience seamless from start to finish. Everything was exceptionally well organized, from the early morning pickup and logistics to the sunrise experience itself. Watching the sunrise at Haleakalā was absolutely unforgettable, and having such a great team made it even better. If you’re visiting Maui, this is an absolute must-do. I can’t recommend Valley Isle Excursions enough!
The weather was terrible and we could not see the sunrise. I know you can not predict the weather…..
It was definitely worth waking up very early in the morning to see the sunrise, it was gorgeous! It was great to have someone who knows how to drive the windy roads to the national park in the cloudy dark. Jeff was kind enough to provide ginger chews in case we got sick, but the drive was smooth and quick. Once we got there, we were provided with fleece ponchos, if you plan on wearing the minimum and not bundling much, do take it. It was very cold with the wind despite being the summer. After sunrise, we headed to breakfast and the food was amazing! Would recommend if you unable to get a reservation, don't want to drive or plan for breaky.
We had a great time on this tour. Our guides were entertaining and fun. The sunrise from Haleakala was amazing and worth getting up way too early.
This is easily one of the top experiences to look out for in Maui, and it did not disappoint. Billy was an amazing host—he made sure everyone was comfortable and shared incredible knowledge about the history, the tour, and what to look out for along the way. The views were absolutely awesome. Our only complaint is that the seats were pretty uncomfortable for such a long drive. Aside from that, Billy was fantastic, and it was a wonderful experience overall!
This was an amazing experience. The weather was perfect and the sunrise view was breathtaking. The driver was very nice and explained all the history about Hawaii. The breakfast at the plantation was really great, the place was beautiful. Overall, all worth it.
