Right down the mountain met my expectations. Our guides were terrific and overall we had a wonderful time.

An exciting way to see the volcano and the views. The guides were informative and a lot of fun. A must do.
Our Hawaiian downhill bike tour was a highlight of our trip! Joe was an outstanding guide—kind, safety-conscious, and happy to let our group set a comfortable pace. The ride was beautiful, fun, and unforgettable. Highly recommend!
The guides are all about providing a great trip down the volcano safely. Be prepared to go fast! Some in our group did not realize how fast 20-25 mph is on a bike and chose to sit out the second ride because of that. It is nice to have the whole lane to ride in versus just the bike lane. The scenery is gorgeous and the third trip through the town and fields was so much fun. Major kudos to our guides for leading such a big group down safely!
We were taken just below the summit. Unloaded our bikes, the bikes seemed older and needed maintenance. My brakes squeak the whole time I use them. We did maybe a 20 minute ride down. They loaded our bikes back up and we did the same route again which was not what we unexpected. Them they drove us to a town where we were on our own for 45 minutes. We got on our bikes and individually, went down the rest of the way to Paia. They did discuss some things in the van ride to the summit, but they weren’t mic’d so if you were in the back, you couldn’t hear anything. We did not go through two towns, it was not one continuous 26 mile ride, there wasn’t a history lesson.
Great experience as a solo traveler! Easy to book and clear details in write up and itinerary! Easy to find, chose this over the crazy early sunrise one and SO glad - watched the sunrise on the beach with coffee then headed to the 7:30am meet up! Easy waiver and cold bottled water and granola bars waiting and warm welcome! Love the small group, personal feel. Drive up was beautiful and full of fun history, stories and scenery (45 min), then the ride!! Outstanding option to go unguided (if you want to fast or carefree) or guided - I chose guided first run down and unguided second time! Both super fun and safe and thrilling! Then about 30 min outing in little town just enough to get a coffee and bathroom break, then the final ride down to starting point! Great for anyone!
The Volcano was so beautiful and the guide did a great job of checking experience levels to make sure everyone had a fun and safe trip. We went up the volcano twice, stopped at a cute town for lunch/brunch the biked an easier road afterwards. This experience was completely unforgettable!
Amazing! What blast riding with a small group and the guide, Joey. From pick up to drop off, riders was fun, educational, and SAFE! So glad I did this and hope to do it again with this crew someday!
Great experience. Great guides. Great service. Felt safe and informed. The opportunity to do the ride a second time was perfect.
The tour began with being picked up and taken to the business location. There they had us sign comprehensive waivers and told us to load up in the van. All the way up the mountain (which is NOT to the top), there was no brief or familiarization with the local terrain as the write up says. Once at the 6,500 foot elevation, we were given a safety briefing and a placard explaining the dos and don’ts, but the guide then told everyone they could violate virtually every one of the rules and encouraged riders to just go down the hill on their own. While on the second descent, the group passed a National Park Ranger who conducted a car stop on the chase van. His purpose for doing so was to assess the safety of the tour, since most riders had abandoned the guide and were streaming down the mountain at their own pace and speed, spread out oven and mile. Afterward, the driver who was stopped proceeded to lambast the Ranger for daring to stop her, and ranted on anti law enforcement rhetoric for about 20-minutes. While the tour can be fun, this tour is reckless and disrespectful to law enforcement that was just trying to ensure the groups’s safety. Finally, there was a stop at a cafe, but nothing was included in the $187 cost of the ride. There was a water and granola bar provided at the office in the beginning, but nothing the shop. It’s up to the rider if he or she feels it’s appropriate to bad mouth officers looking out for the group’s safety, and whether a guide ought to be telling the group to completely disregard the rules. Not only is it reckless, but opens the company to huge civil liability if a biker got in an accident. Disappointing.
I purchased the guided bike ride from Norwegian Cruise Lines (as part of a 7 day Hawaii island cruise) and Mountain Riders provided the guided bike ride. The terms and conditions provided at time of purchase ( by NCL) did not say anything about a minimum speed that you had to ride the bike on the downhill run. According to Mountain Riders, if you ride slower than 20 mph (32.2km/hr) you are not allowed to ride the bike and must return to the van. This is what happened to me. I am a competent bike rider, but prefer not to go fast (for my own safety plus I wanted to enjoy the views from the crater). Such a disappointing experience. Don’t book the Maui bike ride with Mountain Riders!!!
Amazing sceneries and tour guide! Lots of photo opportunities! I would definitely recommend this tour to my families and friends.
We had a ast, the 2 guides were amazing, friendly and fun. Joe was crazy and a blast, the ride was amazing. Safe , good equipment and instruction. The Lewis are incredible. The stop in a small village was great. Had a crab and avocado sandwich, it was wonderful. The service on the Cafe was topps. Totally recommend!!!l
This tour was arranged through our cruise ship, The NCL Pride Of America We were collected from our ship and taken to a meeting point at the bottom of the volcano. After completing the paperwork, we were taken to a point 6500 feet up the Haleakala volcano. We were fitted to a suitable bike and helmet. We were asked if we wanted to ride guided or self guided and I must say I was a little confused at this point about what was happening. I was fearful of getting lost on the way down, do I chose to ride in the guided group, which meant I could only go as fast as the slowest rider. As it turned out, we were to ride 3.5 miles down a single road, until we met one of the guides. We would then put the bikes in the back of the trailer and go back up again for a second run. Understanding now how it works, I rode the second time unguided, which was much more fun! The only gear on the bike was very low, so you can’t really pedal and increase the speed, which is understandable for safety reasons. We then rode back to the starting point at the bottom of the volcano to be transported back to the ship. The team of guides were very good in ensuring everyone was comfortable with this potentially dangerous activity, which was appreciated. A fun thing to do in Maui, but clearer information about what was happening would have been good.
A really great time! Joe and Nani were absolutely wonderful! We will definitely be coming back! I would recommend this to mostly anyone who knows how to ride a bike and who is wanting to get some good fresh air with beautiful views.
The views and exhilaration of riding down the mountain were unforgettable. Our team of guides were so fun and seemed to love their job.
This tour was spectacular. We pre-booked this excursion as part of our cruise package. Bob was our tour leader, and he was very knowledgeable and friendly. The tour exceeded my expectations and truly capped off a memorable stay in Maui!
Great staff and all around good time. Fun ride. Abide by the rules or Nani will will put you in your place! Lol
We had an absolutely fabulous ride with Joe and our van driver Spencer. Nothing but love! Safety is their main concern, the bikes are purpose built for downhill riding, lots of helmet sizes, they provide a cute little bottle of water and granola bars, and my wife said this was her favorite excursion of all of them we've ever done! Joe is the down to earth "beach bum" bike rider, been leading tours for decades, had a great sense of humor, and this was much more fun than the go-by-myself self tour. If you're ever unconformable or just tired, you get to ride down in the van. Didn't have that option riding by myself. Highly recommended!
Joe and Spencer were amazing. Joe was extremely patient with the novice riders and gave freedom to those who were confident. Spencer provided interesting fact about Maui, the Hawaiian culture, and history. I highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for adventure and doing things out of the norm!!!
Our first tour in Maui did not disappoint. Despite some light rain and fog we all had a blast riding down the Haleakala Crater road. Our bike leader, Bobby, was entertaining and helpful to everyone in the group. I had not been on a bike in years and the downhill trip was very easy and memorable. Would highly recommend!
We booked this as one of our excursions through Norwegian cruise. It was ok. I thought we would go to the peak but found out when we got there we only went about 2/3 of the way up. Then there is a middle section of the road now closed to tourists so we did the top part of our ride 2x. Then got back in the van and drove through the middle section. We stopped at a town for food/shopping before riding the last few miles down which is downhill but not really a mountain type experience anymore at lower elevation. Our group did not stay together. If that makes you nervous you can go more slow and stay with the guide. If I had known the itinerary I might not have booked this since I really wanted to go into the Haleakala National park and get to the summit.
Had a great time going down the mountain with my 15 year old son. As long as you obey the rules it is safe. The van trails you down the mountain to slow down and/or stop cars from passing you. My favorite was the unattended 5 mile lazy coasting back to the headquarters I think I pedaled twice the whole time I was on the bike. Stopped in a small town for Pog and malasadas. Manny, a native, was super friendly Bring a hoodie for the mountain top it’s in the mid 50’s.
We had the best time on our bike tour!!! Such a unique and fun thing to do in Maui. We learned so many cool facts about the island from our guides and the bike tour itself is a lot of fun and so scenic and beautiful! They also take you to the cute village Makawao which we loved because of the amazing shopping!! Can't recommend Maui Mountain Riders enough! They are awesome.
Wow this was so much fun!! I want to go back to Maui just to do this again!! I am trying to figure out where else we could do a bike ride like this and i just don't know - so beautiful and perfect for a fun ride. Manny was a great guide!!
Great company and manny was such an amazing tour guide, so knowledgeable and such a great rider. I wound recommend this tour to everyone. The day tour was so great! If your awake early do the sunrise tour. The downhill was so easy and anyone found really do it!!
Excellent adventure, amazing tour guide - I'd HIGHLY recommend!! Not too strenuous, since it was a downhill ride. Beautiful views and a super fun time.
Let me preface this review by saying it was a great experience on a nice day with a fun and knowledgeable guide. That said, the bike tour was not as advertised which was surprising and disappointing. Here is what the Trip Advisor ad said: ....…pedal the 26-mile bike route down the slopes of Haleakala. Continue through the switchbacks of Haleakala Ranch, the upcountry town of Kula, and Makawao, and finish in beachside town of Paia. From this description, it is clear that participants will be riding their bikes the full 26 miles. There is no other conclusion one could draw from this. That didn't happen. First of all, we didn't go to the top of Haleakala but started miles away where the switchbacks start. Apparently, the only bike tours that do that are the ones at sunrise which ours wasn't. This was the first lie. At the bottom of the switchbacks, our group, surprisingly, loaded our bikes into the van and proceeded to ride the van down the mountain for miles until hitting the village where we stayed for a half hour or so. Then we all got back in the van and rode several more miles down the road until eventually stopping and finally getting back on our bikes to cruise the remaining distance back to the start. We didn't come close to biking 26 miles, much less the entire trip down. That was the second lie. Let me be clear. What we did was enjoyable but it was not what we paid for, and it sure as hell wasn't as advertised, leaving us feeling shortchanged with a much less than satisfied feeling upon completion.
Our family of 4 with older teens enjoyed the shorter/later day trip. Our weather was perfect--but was still a bit chilly once the bikes got going downhill. (Accept the gloves they offer, even if you think you don't need them!) We had a great time and my husband and I said we enjoyed it as much as the sunrise (much longer) tour we did 20 years ago. (We got to sleep later and still had time to do other activities in the afternoon!) I would NEVER, NEVER in a million years do a self-guided tour. If you do that, you have cars going right next to you and passing you in your same lane. With this tour, the guide leads and the van follows the last rider. No traffic passes you. So worth it for peace of mind for safety.
Got a great spot to view the sunrise with traditional music to welcome the sunrise, then went for a bike ride down the volcano and through the town. Got a personal guide for the bike ride and a van that followed behind. Felt very safe, but be mindful of the speed and height going down the volcano if you are at all nervous
Scary at first but the ride and entertainment by Joe was worth the price. Glad we rode the top portion twice. Overall my daughter and I were really glad we did this ride. The bikes were great too
We highly recommend this bike tour. The guided tour with Manny was everything we hoped it would be. It was a perfect pace and the views were spectacular.
EI loved every bit!! I felt i had the best bikes for the trip, The safest guides, the best instruction to help me feel calm and safe. Very friendly and funny
Trip advertised as half day with two runs down. Due to weather the distance of the ride down was reduced and we did one ride. So we were back at the start very early and no offer of a partial refund.
We really enjoyed our day bike tour. We were glad we chose the guided tour instead of the self-guided experience. It was great having Bobby in the lead and our driver in the rear blocking traffic. The bikes are rusted and older, but they have good tires, soft large seats and excellent brakes. Don't let the looks deceive you! They took us to the top twice to make sure we got our mileage time. Be sure and wear layers and get a "doughnut on a stick" at the bakery in Makawao. Bobby and our driver (forgot her name) were great tour guides stopping for photo shoots and educational information of the region.
Amazing trip, our guide was Joe who lead an incredible tour. Super knowledgeable, supportive, and informative. I’d definitely come back for a trip with him and Dean (driver)
This memorable bike ride was wonderful with incredible views of the entire island, including giant waves breaking on the north shore. It was a fast and fun cruise down the mountain, made even better by guide Joe's informative and humorous commentary.
We never watched got to watch ‘the Maui bike industry’s only safety video’ and we never had to provide proof of insurance. We didn’t have a ‘quick stop’ in Makawao - it was a 50 minute stop so the tour guide could have his lunch. Both of these points were stated on their website. The guide talk about the volcano and rare plants and animals native to Hawaiian Islands was a bit skimpy. He did tell us about all the ‘wild’ chickens and how dangerous they are as they are let loose from illegal cock fighting. I’m not sure they are indigenous to Hawaii. Breathtaking views? We were told to keep our eyes on the road looking straight ahead. If we turned our heads to look at the views we might crash! The bikes were very road worthy with great brakes and comfortable seats. And overall the bike ride portion was enjoyable. We purchased our tour from the cruise ship and paid $189.95, not a cheap tour. The same excursion could have been purchased directly from the company for $109 online. Number 11 on their rule sheet had tipping suggestion of 15 - 20%. And we were told by our guide that they depend on their tips and that they ‘know what we all paid, and so we should be tipping $30 each’!!! We didn’t have $60 US cash on us and we couldn’t use our credit card for the tip, but we did have $20 cash and were planning to tip them this, but I was so offended by his assertion that we were expected to tip so they got nothing! Besides, I’m not sure it was worth $219.95 (with tip).
Had a great time in Maui and a great time on our ride with Mountain Riders. Our guide Manny was interesting and safety conscious!! My kids, wife and I had a great time and really appreciate the personal service!!
This was an awesome experience! With Manny as our guide and Shane as our driver, we were guided up Haleakalā with lots of laughs and stories. Then we were guided safely down in a thrilling, but no pressure, coast/ride back to where we started the day. There is rarely a need to pedal, but you should still be in good condition and able to ride a bike. On the way down, we stopped for about 45 minutes in the quaint town of Makawao in upcountry. We found a cute coffee shop called Vida and then noshed on a two-pound chocolate-peppermint-whiskey cookie from the Maui Cookie Lady. (You really gotta try these cookies!) The bikes were heavy road bikes (rather than mountain/trail bikes), which made for a safe and smooth ride. Full helmets (and any other gear you needed or wanted) were provided. We made several slows and quick stops on the way down. Don’t miss out on this amazing experience while you’re in Maui!
Amazing trip - we’ll organized and safety was a priority! Did this trip with our teen daughters and everyone had a blast
If you don’t want TA wake up super early and only want to bike, this is an excellent tour. The difference between self guided and guided is that you have someone leading the group on a bike and a van behind everyone. The two are in communication, so it’s super safe knowing when a vehicle is behind the group wanting to pass. Manny was our guide, and Shane was the van driver - - both were great!
Had a super great day with Bobby and Bobby Jr.! Lots of information and loads of fun. Easy ride! Thanks
If I could give this excursion of zero I would. Not accurate on your descriptions on the website are not In accurate representation of the actual ride. We picked this ride because it was supposed to go down to Paia and the beach. They do not advertise on their website that they no longer go to the volcano at the national park. We found that out after we already paid for the trip. We did not feel very comfortable on the bikes and they did not appear to be in good working condition. Avoid this excursion and save your money.
Great job by Manny leading us on the Day Tour with Shane driving the van. Enjoyable and kept us safe! Fun exploring the town near the end of the trip! Most beautiful views on Maui! Mahalo, friends!
Our tour guides were great. They gave use great information and history about the islands and made the trip fun for all ages. They made sure everyone was safe on the ride.
The ride and the views were terrific! The staff and experience overall was great. The main coordinator was super helpful and clearly wanted to make this a safe and fun day. We will be back again!
I expexted to start at the top and to end up at sea level….was not the case. Tour guide Joe was terrific.
Mountain Riders Haleakala Bike Tour was such a fun excursion. Our family booked the guided tour with Bobby and Nani and they were awesome guides keeping us well informed from the beginning and safe while guiding us down the volcano. We loved the photo stop while driving up Haleakala and the lunch break in the town of Makawao. We would recommend Mountain Riders to everyone.
The beautiful countryside we passed through was amazing! It was a fun but safe thrill ride down the crater. We loved our stop in Makawao. Wish we had longer to explore ! It was so qusint and funky. Our driver Shane was great! Joe our guide made the trip! He was humorous, knowledgeable ,ensured we were safe. Well be back and recommend it to everyone we know👍
