As you cruise along the Kona Coast, immerse yourself in a Hawaiian cultural expedition enriched with captivating historical narratives. Our lifeguard-certified crew will assist you with snorkel gear to explore the blue ocean and discover coral, tropical fish, turtles, rays, dolphins, and whales. Explore two snorkel locations (weather permitting), enjoy a plant-based breakfast and lunch, and take advantage of standup paddleboards and snorkel gear. Our commitment to environmental protection through sustainable practices and mindful dining sets us apart. Our curated menu features plant-based meals, locally sourced when possible, reflecting our dedication to minimizing environmental impact and promoting guest health. Enjoy a cash bar with beer, wine, mai tais, and champagne as we cruise back to port.
Located approximately 10-miles South of Kealakekua Bay, our Luxury Kona Coast Snorkel Tour often visits the remote and serene Pali Kaholo region, consisting of Rob’s Reef and Turtle Rock (weather depending). Rob’s Reef – A definite favorite with its amazing underwater sea arches and sea caves in the Pali (cliff). Amidst the colorful array of fish and marine life located here, snorkelers may find a unique school of Pyramid Butterflyfish – which are usually only seen in deeper waters. Turtle Rock – As the name suggests, this area is frequented by Green Sea Turtles. The vibrant coral and black sand together in this area create a beautiful contrast. There are also several rock islands and ridges extending below and above the water. Nearby is Lepeamoa, a large rock formation resembling a rooster’s comb.
WEATHER DEPENDING - This large red volcanic cone is named for the type of cinder which it produced. Pu'u - meaning hill and hau, a special stone that was soft, porous, and once used for polishing canoes. Located north of Kealakekua Bay, it is situated between Nenue Point to the North and Keawakaheka Bay to the South, marking the boundary between North and South Kona. The top of Pu’u Ohau (Red Hill) is Kapu, or forbidden, as it is the ancient burial site of High Chiefess Kamaeokalani, grandmother of King Kalakaua and Queen Liliuokalani. Today, the Red Hill area has become known for its excellent snorkeling amongst the many reefs and abundant marine life it sustains.
WEATHER DEPENDING - Kealakekua Bay is one of the best Kona snorkel sites on Hawaii Island. With its natural wind protection, remote location and designations as an underwater state park, marine sanctuary, and site of the Captain Cook Monument, Kealakekua Bay is earning a reputation as the best snorkeling destination in Hawaii.
Kealakekua Bay is home of the Captain Cook Monument. The British established the Captain Cook monument in memory of the site where Cook met his demise. View the monument from the vessel and from snorkeling in the bay.

This is the third time we have enjoyed ourselves on the Kula Kia. Always friendly captain and crew. Food is delicious and fresh. A wonderful relaxing adventure.
Dante, Derek and the entire staff did a great job. Snorkeling was fantastic and the food exceeded our expectations. Great service great fun and probably the best money spent on our Hawaiian vacation
Our 2nd time using this company, but first time on the smaller group boat Hula Kai. Less hectic than the larger groups so well worth it. Good descriptions from the captain as we cruised to our destinations- saw spinner dolphins too! Yes the food is vegan, but all was very good-get out of your comfort zone and try something new! Love their sustainability goals and use of reusable cups, plates and cutlery. Well done!
We had an amazing day out on the water on this adventure. The first of the two snorkel locations was our favorite. Seeing a huge dolphin pod was extra and epic. Good food for breakfast and lunch. Comfortable boat seats. We would do this trip again!
From the check in, boarding the boat and the crew this was a fantastic morning. The equipment is top notch, even the vegan food was really good. The captain and the crew really looked after us, and made the trip really fun. The snorkeling spot is great, and we got to see a lot of marine life. Definitely would do this again.
The crew was out standing and cheerfully and organized, I'd highly recommend! Boat was big and clean.
Great Crew! Safe-Fun-Beautiful
We had a fabulous day on the Captain Jack boat. We scheduled this trip to spread ashes and snorkel. We were a party of 6. Captain Dante and crew member Calais took excellent care of us. They gently took us to a place where we scattered ashes that was so beautiful. We will remember it always. Well done Fair Winds cruises.
Our experience on the Kona Coast Snorkel Tour with Fair Wind Cruises was absolutely amazing from start to finish. After already doing the manta ray night snorkel with them a couple of nights before, we were excited to go out with them again, and once again they delivered an incredible experience. The crew onboard was interactive, friendly, and constantly engaging with guests throughout the trip. They even offered to take photos while we were snorkeling, which made the experience feel much more personal and memorable. You could really tell the entire team genuinely cared about both the guests and the ocean around them. One moment that really stood out to us was when the crew spotted a fishing net and other trash floating in the water. They actually stopped what they were doing to remove it because they were more concerned about protecting the marine life and keeping the ocean safe. Seeing a crew take that kind of pride in caring for the wildlife and environment was honestly refreshing and admirable. The snorkeling itself was fantastic, and we were even lucky enough to see a pod of dolphins during the trip. On top of that, the crew shared so much information about the island, the coastline, and areas you would only ever get to experience from the water and not from land. It made the entire trip feel educational, adventurous, and unforgettable all at once. Highly recommend this tour to anyone wanting an amazing snorkeling experience with a crew that truly cares about the ocean, wildlife, and their guests.
There was a problem with the boat for our original excursion, but Fair Wind got us on another cruise. We had a great time because they offered us the chance to Snuba dive. That was a great experience. Joe was our guide and he was so patient when I was having problems with my mask. I wasn't able to dive because of it but was able to switch out masks and he offered me to go on the second round so I didn't miss out. Had a great time and couldn't be happier with our day!
Our third time on the Hula Kai going down the Kona Coast stopping at Rob's Reef and then Kealakekua and it never disappoints. Great snorkel/freedive destinations, terrific crew and delicious breakfast and lunch. Mahalo Nui!!!
We had a lovely excursion on our Kona coast snorkel tour. Staff were helpful, captain made sure we were safe, comfortable seats. Rough seas limited some of the snorkeling but we still had a great experience. Food was nicely prepared but menu not quite our thing. Can highly recommend. Easy walk from Outrigger resort.
We had such a good time aboard the Hula Kai with our party of 5. The food was delicious!! Because we avoid single-use plastic, we usually have to bring our own cups and utensils, so it was so nice to just show up knowing they supply all reusable foodware. The staff was friendly, the snorkeling was lovely, and we had so much fun speeding through the wind and getting sprayed.
Breakfast Fabulous, lunch Wonderful, Snorkeling Fantastic, Watching Fish Was Fantastic With Dolphins,Coral,Lots and lots of fish, spring water is cold Captian Cook Monument viewing. Thanks Fair Wind!!!
Our Kona Coast Snorkel tour was a great experience. It was a nice relaxing tour along the coast searching for marine mammals while being served beverages and breakfast on the way to our first snorkel location (chosen for the best conditions for the particular day). We were treated to dolphin sightings at least 3 times. Spinner dolphins doing their thing - spinning out of the water. We were served lunch before our second snorkel at the Captain Cook memorial. Lastly, another relaxing cruise back to port. I highly recommend this tour due to the friendly and attentive staff which made the whole experience very enjoyable.
This is the BEST Snorkle tour. All the providers have great tours. What makes this tour stand out is the boat and how they moor . You are sitting on top of fish galore! The dolphins came to play, not only out from the shore but right beside the boat. In addition the boat has easy access to the water, slides and diving platforms plus inner tubes for playing. The captain and crew were exceptional. We appreciated the environmental orientation. The plant based food wasn’t my jam but the cookies were sensational.
Excellent trip. The boat has very comfortable seating and trip was relaxing. The breakfast and lunch was very good. We stopped at two different locations to snorkel. Beautiful! The Captain and crew were superb!! Highly recommend this excursion. This was our second trip with them and we will be back.. saw several dophins and a couple of whales.
Awesome experience. The crew was professional, fun and helpful. We met amazing people. The snorkeling was lovely and not overly crowded.
Amazing marine life. Great crew (and office staff). I had a fantastic time I’ll never forget. I highly recommend this snorkeling excursion with Fair Wind.
This was one of the best snorkeling trips we’ve had. The captain was knowledgeable and very funny, the crew was great and the food was amazing. I’d give it 10 stars if I could! Highly recommend.
It was a wonderful day on the water. Great service and relaxing day. It was a trip we would do again.
Our favorite tour company for sure. Been booking their tours for 10 years. Always the top performance, quality and friendly crew. They hire the best. I plan to join their adopt a highway team who clean up our environment. They just care about the island in every way. Mahalo nui loa for your efforts.
Kona coffee and reef safe sunscreen was provided before we boarded. Every seat had a great, open air shaded view. Staff were friendly and helpful and ensured we all had good time. The plant based breakfast and lunch were tasty!
We had a great time with two different snorkeling sites. Food was good and fresh. The crew was very friendly and helpful with any questions or needs. I would book this trip again.
We originally signed up for just the Kealakekua cruise, but the day before, we got a call from Sarah offering us a free upgrade to the Luxury Lunch Cruise—and of course we said yes! It ended up being the most amazing experience. We were celebrating both mine and my sister’s birthdays, and we couldn’t have asked for a better way to do it. The cruise took us to two locations, one of which was the captain’s choice—Rob’s Reef—which turned out to be the absolute highlight of the trip. The waters there were a bit rougher, so it’s definitely better suited for confident swimmers, but we got to see a sea turtle, which completely made my day! The food was incredible. If I didn’t already know it was vegan, I never would’ve guessed—it was that good. The crew also put a big emphasis on sustainability, and nothing goes to waste. All leftover food is used for compost, which we really appreciated. At Kealakekua Bay, we got to use the paddle boards, which was another fun and memorable part of the day. From the food to the snorkeling, the activities, and especially the amazing crew, everything exceeded our expectations. They truly went above and beyond to make our birthdays feel so special. Highly recommend!
This was a fantastic trip! It was windy and a bit rough on the ocean but the catamaran made the trip very comfortable. The crew accommodated people of all skill levels with equipment and floatation assist such as belts and noodles. The food for breakfast and lunch was delicious and generous portions! I would highly recommend this trip to anyone. We also did the manta ray excursion and had a fantastic time!
This was really fun! Crew was knowledgeable and helpful. The food was really good as well. I appreciated that everything was plant based and sustainably sourced and that the boat ran on biodiesel. The places we snorkeled were gorgeous and it was such a wonderful experience!
This year, I made three reservations for two prople but forgot to use the discount code on the second and third. I asked for help and they immediately made changes, reducing the cost to the reduced amount. Immediate. No discussion. They consistently do the right thing at the right time. They look after their clients when booking, on arrival, on the boat and with all staff members being life guards with you in the water to ensure your safety, you will feel the aloha and their care. The knowledge of local conditions, habits of fish and other reef life is helpful in interpreting what you experience. We book every year with Fair Wind for their attention to us, our needs and our safety.
We loved our experience on this 9:00-2:30 boat trip that included breakfast, 2 snorkels and lunch. The crew were fabulous, the food delicious and the snorkeling superb. Loved the boat and having just 30 some people onboard was lovely.
The Hula Kai is a fantastic vessel, very comfortable and stable. We sat upstairs and enjoyed our gourmet vegan breakfast during the ride to the first snorkeling site, though we went downstairs when the bottlenose dolphins showed up! We had a great time snorkeling around Rob's Reef. We used the equipment we'd rented for the week, but they provide snorkeling equipment for those who don't have it, and I thought it was great that they also had inner-tubes and contraptions for looking underwater without a snorkel mask for people who weren't comfortable snorkeling. They also had other options for non-snorkelers, including stand-up paddleboards. After that, they took us to Kealakekua Bay, where we had more time for snorkeling. That was even better--the water was calmer, though there were more people in the water, and there were so many fish! When we got out of the water there was a fresh water shower to rinse the salt water off our faces as we got back on the boat. That was followed by a delicious and unusual vegan lunch on the boat. We ended up buying a mai tai at the boat's bar on the way back to harbor and drinking it while looking through their fish book to try to identify which fish we had seen while snorkeling. The staff were super friendly, and all in all, it was a fabulous experience. We would definitely do it again if we manage to make it back to the Big Island someday!
This was an excellent snorkel tour. My wife and I loved that it was adults only on the tour and that we had the opportunity to go to some new and unexpected snorkel spots on the island. The crew were excellent and went above and beyond to make us comfortable. Food and drinks were also delciious!
Me and my girlfriend had a very nice time with the entire crew and super great food on board, highly recommend for vegan or not vegan families... We watched dolphins and have a good day and weather..... Thanks so much for everything. Mahalo 🙏🏼
Always liked getting out on the Hula Kai. We have been out many times to snorkel at two of the best spots. The Captain is knowledgeable about the areas we draw close to and the waters we sail on. The crew takes very good care of us all. Being kind and attentive is so important.
Amazing trip! The Captain made sure we saw a hammerhead shark and whales that were on the way to and from the snorkeling area. Our adult son is mentally challenged and too afraid to get in the water but the crew was so great at checking on him to make sure he was doing okay while he waited on the boat. The lunch meal and drinks were great. We were told that this was the best tour for snorkeling and the trip and the entire crew did not disappoint! Highly recommended!
Thus was an excellent trip. Felt pampered. Lots of snorkeling, whale, and dolphins. Took great care of everyone. I got sick at one spot and they helped me out with that as well. Can't say enough good things about this trip.
Aloha, I once again took a friend on the wonderful "Hula Kai' snorkel adventure. As always, the experience is one of those "once in a lifetime's". For over 50 years I have been grateful and enjoyed my snorkelling adventures on the Fairwinds and then Hula Kai. This has always been for family and visiting friends the very best snorkelling experience on the Big Island. Hats off to the Fairwind owners with their part to preserving the environment.... sustainable agriculture...using local ingredients, fueling the boats only with biodiesel fuel.. With the compassion shown for over the years to those taking their snorkel adventures, the owners of the Fairwinds, Hula Kai realising the footprint too often harmfully placed on our precious Hawaiian Islands.. are also dedicated with compassion to protecting the the Hawaiian Islands, the environment ...utilizing local products and creating tasty food grown on the islands promoting this mission. I applaud them for their dedication. Thank you... The "BEST" snorkel experience while on the Big Island.
It was awesome. Went to great snorkeling sites, especially Capt. Cook. One suggestion, if there is enough crew, it would be helpful for those who need assistance if there was someone to help them with their gear. Other than that, it was wonderful. Would highly recommend.
Went to 3 separate snorkeling locations and could see plenty of fish. Absolutely fantastic tour! Informative and fun! Will come again.
The tour was terrific! The staff was amazing (captain, skipper and etc) very knowledgeable and friendly. We saw many different fish, eels, dolphins and even a whale!
The crew was professional and very funny. They made the whole trip fun. Great plant based food. Comfortable boat, and a brief snorkeling class if you want it. 10/10.
Best snorkeling cruise that supports the heritage of Hawaii! Highly recommend as the crews attentive and works for all family members.
We had great weather. Plant based food was excellent. Equipment on board enhanced the experience. Crew was delightful. Boat was very stable and we got to see some humpbacks. We were scheduled to leave at 9 am but left half hour later. Second snorkeling spot was the best!
The people, the service, the snorkeling was amazing. Very tasty food for breakfast and lunch was served. Historical spots pointed out by the captain was beautifully explained. There's a very rich culture here that can be learned. A great day event that will be remembered by my family.
This company and excursion was wonderful. The food was delicious. The crew was very informative and thoughtful. Overall, this really stood out because so many snorkeling tours in the area feel touristy and go to the same places. This did hit the major snorkeling location, but provided an opportunity to get outside Captain Cook area and learn more about the area.
Perfect day! Staff and food were great. We enjoyed the fish. The trip was Worth the money. Everyone in a group of 9 had a good time.
The whole crew is super nice, friendly, and helpful!! We were in boat 2 that day and the captain was super nice and helpful. One of the crew members helped me and my mom with the snorkeling and paddle board with great patience. Be sure to leave gratuities for those guys because they provide great service and experiences!!
This trip was so relaxing and fun! The swells didn’t cooperate for us to go to additional locations but we thoroughly enjoyed the “alternate” spot at Kealakekua Bay. I found an octopus while snorkeling and we saw dolphins in the bay. The vegan food was fantastic! Thank you for a great trip!
We would definitely go back, we felt very comfortable and relaxed for first time snorkeling. Thank you for making it a pleasant experience.
The boatride on the Hula Kai was amazing with super comfy seating. The crew was fun and very helpful. 5 out of 5 here. The food served was original and delicious. 5 out of 5 here. We saw dolphins up close to the boat on the ride back from snorkeling. The snorkeling was just ok compared to other trips I have been on in Carribean islands. The water was crystal clear, but there was not much variety of fish at Rob's Reef or the Captain Cook monument. 3 out of 5.
