Greenwell Farms is a well-known coffee farm and producer located in the Kona region of Hawaii's Big Island. Established in 1850 by Henry Nicholas Greenwell, it is one of the oldest coffee farms in Hawaii and has a rich history tied to the development of Kona coffee, which is internationally recognized for its high quality. The farm is located in the Kona district on the slopes of the Mauna Loa volcano. The region's unique climate, with its rich volcanic soil, sunny mornings, cloud-covered afternoons, and consistent rainfall, creates ideal conditions for growing high-quality coffee.
Manuka State Wayside Park is a tranquil, 13-acre park located on the Big Island of Hawaii along the Hawaii Belt Road (Highway 11). Nestled on the slopes of Mauna Loa, the park features a diverse mix of wet and dry forest ecosystems, offering visitors a peaceful setting for picnicking and hiking. The park's 2-mile Manuka Nature Trail takes you through lush native forests, showcasing a variety of plant species, volcanic features, and providing insights into the area's unique geology and ecology. This lesser-known gem is home to various native Hawaiian plants and wildlife, including endemic bird species like the Hawaiian hawk and honeycreeper. With picnic areas and interpretive signs along the trail, Manuka State Wayside Park offers a serene escape into Hawaii’s natural beauty, making it an ideal stop for those exploring the southern part of the Big Island.
Punaluʻu Bake Shop, located in Naʻālehu on the Big Island of Hawaii, is the southernmost bakery in the U.S. and renowned for its traditional Hawaiian sweet bread, offered in flavors like taro, guava, and mango. Established in 1991, it’s a popular stop for travelers, featuring a variety of baked goods, a gift shop, and a beautiful garden. The bakery emphasizes sustainability and offers a delightful taste of Hawaiian hospitality and local flavors.
Walk on a black sand beach with a chance to see the native Hawaiian green sea turtle
Visiting Volcanoes National Park offers an immersive experience into Hawaii’s volcanic landscape. Starting at the visitor center, you learn about the park’s geology and history before heading out to explore. At Halemaʻumaʻu Crater, you witness the awe-inspiring glow of molten lava, a powerful reminder of the island's volcanic activity. The Kīlauea Iki Rainforest Lookout provides a striking contrast, offering views of a lush rainforest surrounding a massive crater, where a trail leads through the remnants of a past eruption. Walking through the Thurston Lava Tube, you experience a natural tunnel formed by flowing lava, and at the active steam vents, you feel the heat rising from the earth, reminding you of the intense geothermal activity beneath your feet. Each stop offers a unique glimpse into the forces that continue to shape the island.
Mauna Kea Access Road is a steep, winding route that leads to the summit of Mauna Kea, Hawaii’s tallest volcano and the highest point in the state. Starting from the Saddle Road (Route 200), the road ascends through various climates, from grassy plains to barren, volcanic landscapes. As you climb, the air becomes thinner, and temperatures drop significantly.
The Kohala Coast is known for its beautiful beaches, luxury resorts, and scenic views. The area has a drier climate compared to other parts of the island, making it ideal for enjoying outdoor activities and exploring places like Mauna Kea, which is nearby.
Hilo, located on the Big Island of Hawaii, boasts a rich history and vibrant cultural scene. The town features attractions such as the Lyman Museum, which showcases Hawaii’s natural and cultural history, and the Hilo Historic District, where visitors can explore preserved early 20th-century buildings. Additionally, the Pacific Tsunami Museum offers insights into the impact of tsunamis on the region, while Liliuokalani Gardens provides a serene setting to honor Hawaii’s last reigning monarch, Queen Liliuokalani. The Hilo Farmers Market, though not historical, is a lively hub that reflects local culture and history through its diverse range of goods and produce. These elements together make Hilo a fascinating destination for those interested in Hawaii’s heritage and natural beauty.

Unfortunately it rained for most of the day. Couldn’t get great views. Driver wasn’t much of a talker. Drove too fast for my liking in the rain.
Great overview of the Big Island. Enjoyed the lunch restaurant at the southernmost tip. Hawai’i National Park is a beautiful park, and seeing the craters, steam vents, and lava tube is amazing. Our excellent tour guide, Kevin, provided a lot of information on the island and volcanoes. Great way to tour without having to worry about driving yourself.
We saw some very cool places, and our guide was incredibly informative and kind.
All day tour with lots of information and sites. Tour guide Mel was awesome and kept everyone on time and had great stories! Take snacks and water but there was a stop for lunch at a great restaurant. Highly recommend.
Beautiful scenery and history lesson along the way. Loved the experience. Long day but well worth it.
Great tour! Highly recommend. Our guide Kevin was informative and very nice always assisting in and out of van.
Kevin was extremely knowledgeable with regard to the sites we visited. He kept on time even with the distances we traveled and the sites we saw.
Our guide Kevin was very kind and considerate and his knowledge of Hawaii was excellent. We saw lots of interesting sights and had a thoroughly enjoyable day.
Great experience, Mark was an awesome guide. Very knowledgeable, set a great pace for the day, and even recommended a place for dinner afterward. Thanks Mark!
Although this was a long day, it did not feel long as there was many stops. Also, if you are lucky enough to get Melvin as your guide, count your blessings. This man knows more about the history of this area and the science behind the development and eruption of the volcanoes then many professional geologist that I have met. He loves to be fact, checked as he is right 99.9% of the time.
Kevin was a great tour guide. He was knowledgeable and friendly. He made this experience so comfortable and smooth. Absolutely would do again!
Very long ride from the Kona - Waikoloa area. Overall tour is about ten hours, but it is very informative and interesting.
Long day but you cover a lot of ground. I would definitely recommend. Guide was super knowledgeable!
This trip takes a lot of time to pick up and drop off. 11 hours is accurate. The passengers all over the island. After the volcano tour, we headed rnorth east to Hilo to drop off passengers at the airport in the opposite direction of kona. There are a couple of unnecessary stops at a military camp. Or a hotel. The stops associated with the volcanoes were brief. I could not hear the driver explaining the history and information because I was in the back.
Excellent tour. Punctual pick up and drop off . Our guide Kevin was excellent. The volcano view , black sand beach, Lava tunnel all were amazing. Wonderful natural beauty.
I was traveling solo and the tour guide from the start was very friendly and easy to talk to! I learned a lot and I didn’t feel rush! He is very knowledgeable! Honestly one of the best experiences I had here in the island
This is a 100% to do while visiting the Big Island! Our driver Mel was the absolute best, he was so knowledgeable and kept our whole group engaged and laughing. 10/10. This was the best experience to be able to see so much of the Big Island all in one day! Another shout out to Mel our group loved that guy! CHE HOOOOO!
We took a day trip from Kona around the south of the island to the volcano. It does take all day but as well worth it.
Mel was a great guide. Very knowledgeable and entertaining. Would do this again had fun. Great time !
Del, a driver and tour guide was very knowledgeable in the Big Island's tourism. He gave us very detailed and thorough information about the tour which everyone enjoyed.
It is very long with the going and coming was about half of the total time. Lunch stop was at a strip mall food court. Although it was wonderful that the pick up was at our resort there were also several other pick ups and drop offs and the start time was not as advertised because some were picked up at the airport which dictated the start and end of excursion and required bypassing a couple of the planned stops. On the positive side, Mel, the driver/guide was terrific! And visiting the Volcano park was the main purpose and it was good.
Viator underestimated length of tour. Actual time is 11hrs or more. Spent 2/3 of the time driving. Tour operator and driver was good. Had enough breaks and enough time to see everything.
Be prepared for a 10 hour tour, with getting off and on the bus at points of interest enroute to the National Park . Be flexible if there are changes due to road or weather conditions. Be courteous and respect the driver/tour guide; this is their area of expertise.
Great tour with Mel. Lots of good spots around the island and plenty of time in the park with lots of views of the crater as well as steam vents and lava flows. Mel provided really good narration throughout the tour offering lots of details and stories.
The good first. The tour was relatively inexpensive and an encompassed many of the Islands attractions. Kevin, the guide was awesome. He was personalble, friendly and very knowledgeable. He picked me up timely, and I thought this is going to be a great day. 30 minutes into the 10 hour tour, the van broke down and we spent over two hours, hot and uncomfortable on the side of the road.. When it first broke down, I texted Aloha. This was their response.:.'Aloha L , we sincerely apologize for the van breakdown and the long wait. Our team is currently working on it and doing everything we can to assist. We truly appreciate your patience and understanding. We'll keep you updated.' They sent a new Van. I sent a follow up text. asking for a partial refund or discou broken equipment with no customer servicent on another tour. There was no responyse. I followed it up with a phone call request which I was told would be given to the owner. No one ever responded. I can understand and accept the van breaking down. I can't understand failing to respond with a yes or no. The total lack of customer service was unacceptable. I would never recommend this company to anyone.
A great tour starts with a great guide, and we couldn’t have been luckier than to ride with Mel. Despite the low visibility from storms and some fairly harsh weather on the drive home, Mel kept us entertained and safe throughout the day. He was very knowledgeable and personable. The itinerary provided a wide variety of awesome stops. Despite the rain, we still saw lava at two of the stops inside the park. Awesome day overall!
Our tour guide Mel was very informative and caring. He made us feel like we were family. Highly recommend the Hawaii Volcanos National Park experience!
Out host driver Kevin was a great tour guide lots of knowledge was a true experience we went to the volcanoes had good food and met a lot of great people
Our guide Kevin was great! We learned about geography, history, local flora and fauna. I highly recommend.
It’s a long day but worth it. Wear comfortable shoes for walking. And bring cash as most places prefer cash.
The tour covered most of the attractions possible that could be visited. The original itinerary was revised due to the recent hurricane infrastructure damage. Tour guide Kevin was very informative throughout explaining the history and significance of the area especially in Volcanos National Park
It was a great experience. Jim is very entertaining and we learned a lot from him. The black sand beach, waterfall and volcano is amazing.
12/10 - Kevin was wonderful and very informative about the island's history. We saw the Hilo gardens and farmers market as well as the Kiluea volcano.
Kevin was a great tour guide and made things fun, even though the hurricane changed our schedule. Would go again!
Likey the only opportunity to you will ever have to see an active volcano. A must see from many view points.
I guess my expectations were higher than they should have been. Our guide was absolutely fantastic, Mel was his name. I didn’t know what to expect but I wasn’t as impressed as I thought I would be with the sites. Mel made it as good as it was. He was so full of very interesting knowledge. If it wasn’t for him, it would have been a big disappointment
Chris was great and incredibly knowledgeable about the island and Hawaii in general. He knew the answer to every question we had and made the experience really enjoyable. I’d definitely recommend this tour to anyone looking to see a ton of the island all in one go!
Our guide Mel was top notch. I love locals who know their history and the details of what they are showing us. He was personable and funny and took a lot of time narrating.
My partner and I were really looking forward to this tour, and it didn’t disappoint! Mel was our guide, and we were very impressed with his seemingly endless knowledge of the island, and the general organisation of the trip. Our group was pleasant, and of course Mel made sure we had/knew all that we needed to at each stop. It was a long tour for sure, i.e it can be more than 10+ hours long depending on how everyone goes regarding punctuality, and it’s a pretty long drive to get to one side of the island and back all in a day but Mel and the people in our group made it a fun experience nonetheless. Would highly recommend! Thanks for having us guys!!! Mahalo 🤙🏾
Our Kīlauea Volcano tour was truly unforgettable. We were incredibly fortunate to witness Eruption Episode 51, and our outstanding guide, Jim Carey, nimbly pivoted the tour to get us to an amazing vantage point. Watching the eruption unfold before us was a breathtaking, once-in-a-lifetime experience that we will never forget. Even without the eruption, Jim would have made this an exceptional tour. His depth and breadth of knowledge about the Big Island went far beyond the typical memorized tour-guide script. His genuine love for the island and his passion for its culture, mythology, history, and natural wonders, came through in every story he shared. Jim’s knowledge, enthusiasm, and ability to adapt in the moment made an extraordinary day even more memorable.
Mark was an excellent tour guide !! Very knowledgeable and made our experience great. If you have time during your visit this is definitely worth doing. We rode all around the big island. The tour is about 10hrs but well worth it. Thanks again Mark!!
Locations visited were breathtaking tourguide left a lot to be desired! Time at each location was not optimal.
This was our first trip to the Big Island. Mel, our tour guide, was prompt and knowledge about not only all the stops along the way but HI history as well. Every stop was an appropriate amount of time, especially at that delicious bakery and Volcanoes National Park. Thank you, Viator, for sending information in advance regarding closed-toe shoes and ponchos. We definitely got caught in some rain during our excursion.
The door-to-door pickup and drop-off was a fantastic perk. Many tours require you to drive to the operator’s location, so being picked up and returned directly to our rental made the day much easier and more relaxing. Our guide, Mel, was extremely knowledgeable. During the two-plus-hour drive each way, he kept us entertained with Hawaiian history, information about the island’s vegetation and weather, and all kinds of interesting facts along the way. The stops were also very thoughtfully planned. There were comfortable opportunities for bathroom breaks, snacks, and lunch, but none of them felt like the typical high-pressure retail stops that some tours build into the itinerary.
Very informative, Kevin was great in providing information and making sure everyone was comfortable.
Seeing a live volcano is a chance in a lifetime. I'm always amazed when I see the acres and acres of hardened lava from hundreds of years ago, and up to just a week ago. . To see, to touch and to experience, first hand, mother nature's wrath, brings the history of Hawaii alive and interesting.
great tour and great tourist guide, he took us to amazing places all over th island, especially in the National Park.
Take a poncho or umbrella. It'll likely rain. Still can't believe that wasn't part of the information. We were wet for hours. Our guide barely talked for the 10 hours we were with him. I don't recall seeing anything about visiting Hilo on the itinerary either. We somehow became a shuttle service to the Hilo airport for some of the other participants. Not sure if that qualifies as kidnapping, but it felt like it. I enjoyed the visit to the National Park. The rest was a waste of time. I would not recommend.
It's very informative, Mel is very knowledgeable and professional in guiding us, unforgettable experience 👏
