You need the whole day if you want to do the hikes. 3 and a half hours was not enough, but that’s all the time we had. The information on the tour was perfect.

Itinerary
Day 1
1
Stop here to ask a park ranger some questions, fill up your water bottle, or use the restroom. If you didn’t bring a jacket, the gift shop at the Visitor Center usually has sweatshirts for sale. You might want to pick one up here, as temperatures vary drastically across the park.
Stop and stare at a cloud of steam formed from underground water meeting hot volcanic rock.
Learn about the history of the Kilauea Military Camp which dates back almost 100 years. Today, it offers accommodations near the park for military families.
Stop at Uēkahuna, the highest point on the rim of Kīlauea, for panoramic views across Kaluapele (Kīlauea caldera) and Halemaʻumaʻu. Uēkahuna is also an important Native Hawaiian cultural site. Volcanic activity and visibility vary.
This 1.2-mile hike (roundtrip) is actually a leisurely walk along a paved path where you’ll see more steam rising from the ground. Feel free to hike this now or after your trip down Chain of Craters Road.
Back in 1959, this mile-long crater was a seething lava lake spewing fountains of lava up to 1,900 feet in the air.
This magnificent natural landmark is one of the most popular spots at the national park. There is a well-maintained trail that takes you inside a 600-foot lava tube and through a lush rainforest.
Optional hike: Shaka Guide recommends a shorter out-and-back option to experience the Kīlauea Iki crater floor in about an hour. Travelers who choose the full 3.3-mile loop should allow approximately 2–3 hours. The Kïlauea Iki Trail is technically a 4-mile hike that takes you along the rim of Kilauea Iki and down to the crater floor, where you can feel the pulse of this magnificent volcano from the still-steaming crater floor. If you’re pressed for time, there's a shortcut. Just across the street from Nahuku Lava Tube is a short trail to the bottom of Kilauea Iki Crater. This shortcut takes about one hour to complete. Please know, there is a steep decline through the forest into the crater. Once you get to the crater floor, snap as many photos as you’d like, then work your way back up to the parking area the same way you came.
You’ll feel like you’re on Mars as you take in the terrain on your walk along Devastation Trail. This one-mile trail takes you along the path of a destructive and explosive eruption dating back to 1959. Along the way, you’ll see spots where life is beginning to regrow and find a large barren lava mound called the Pu’u Pua'i Cinder Cone -- a perfect example of how mother nature forms new mountains.
Does seeing the views of massive volcanic craters ever get old? We don't think so! Chain of Craters Road got its name from the handful of massive craters with viewpoints along the road. Puhimau Crater is one of many dramatic holes likely formed around 1500-1800 AD. In our opinion, this gigantic pit crater is one of the best views on the tour. What’s a pit crater you ask? It’s a depression in the ground that forms when a volcano shifts or expands--and surprisingly not the result of an explosion.
More of a stroll than a hike, the Maunaulu Fissure Hike is at the site of a 1969 eruption that spewed lava up to 200 feet in the air, destroying a native 'ohi'a forest in the area. As you walk you’ll see lava trees and a variety of volcanic formations. The trail is marked with stacked rocks. Please do not disturb the rocks or build new stacks.
The overlook is built on Holei Pali, a steep cliff with a 2,000-foot drop. At the Kealakomo Lookout, in addition to the panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean, you will also have an expansive view of the vast lava flow in 1971 that buried portions of the ancient coastal village of Kealakomo.
One of our favorite stops on the tour, the Pu'uloa Petroglyphs hike tells the story of Hawaii’s past. As you walk along this trail you’ll see ancient petroglyphs or inscribed images on stone. This hike takes about 20 minutes each way and ends at a well-maintained wooden boardwalk that circles many of the 23,000 petroglyphs in this area. In fact, this site is home to the largest grouping of petroglyphs in Hawaii! As you walk, remember to respect the sacredness of this place.
You can view the Holei Sea Arch from the observation area located just past the gate at the end of the Chain of Craters Road. This 90-foot sea arch was formed roughly 500 years ago from an ancient lava tube that hardened as it entered the ocean. And just within the last 100 years or so, the sea arch was sculpted by ocean erosion.
Optional side trip: Walk the 1.2-mile Kīpukapuaulu loop through native Hawaiian forest surrounded by younger lava flows. Allow approximately 1–1.5 hours. Access in this area can change, so follow current National Park Service closures and signage.

We loved it! We went our pace and frankly enjoyed the facts throughout the tour. Definitely would do again on another island!
Great experience. Very knowledgeable, learned alot about Hawaii and how everything came about. Place we visited were beautiful. And I liked the fact that I could pause the guide to get out and take poctures or hike, then return back to the guide. So at your own pace, which is great. Would recommend to anyone going on vacation. Loved the stories ❤️
I wish you could pick the voice of your guide like you can in Alexa. It was very chipper annoying. App was downloaded and is supposed to work with maps to follow where you are but didn’t quite work like that and kept starting over so I had to know where we were to click the right things at the right times.
Good alternative to group or more expensive excursions. We stopped where we wanted and the additional stories of history and folklore were interesting.
Fantastic Hawaii volcano self audio tour was well directed, engaging, and fun. My family and I loved it!
This was very informative & fun. We learned alot about the volcanoes themselves, plus the stories/ beliefs of the native Hawaiians. It was also very easy to use, just follow directions to download. When ready to use, click go & you are ready to go. It picks up where you are and starts narrating.
the audio was very good and made the trip through the park so interesting and informative.. we learned so much history about the park. My grandaughter and I also thought the narrator was really good at how he took us through the park with music and a good sense of humor.
We were driving while I was trying to download… it never did download. Too many steps to the process! Bummed to have missed the tips!!
Best deal in town if you have a rental car. It's like having your own personal tour guide, and the app is easy to use. You simply drive to the starting point, start the app, and then follow the clear driving instructions. All the points of interest are explained with a bit of history, and many are places you would simply just drive by because you don't know what you don't know! I highly recommend this app, and after this experience, we bought all the maps for Oahu, which is our next island.
The tour was little confusing to follow. Once we selected the road ourselves it was giving the directions, also it told us that we completed the tour after the crater rim drive on east side. We came back home and after reading more into it we realized that we missed the most important portion of the park which was the active lava zone in the park. We had to go back to the park to see the other side of the park which was the most important one. not satisfied with the tour at all.
Informative and useful information was shared along with fiction stories which made it more interesting
Great flexibility to use at your own pace and no need to wrestle with the maps that you are given by the park. Audio gives you a lot of information and you can hear about the sights rather than read all the plaques at the sights.
This app was good. It gave us directions and told us where to stop. I would have preferred more historical and environmental commentary to go along with the folklore.
This was a great help in guiding us through the park. It had great key points and info for each stop we made. You can go at your own pace and it just picks up when you begin driving to the next destination.
They wouldn't accept this pre paid ticket so we were out 20.00. They guy didn't even look at it he was rude.
We really enjoyed using the Shaka Guide Audio Tour on our visit to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. We learned many interesting facts about the volcano and surrounding area. The app was easy to download and use. Mahalo Nui Loa
Instructions regarding how and where to start could have been a little clearer, otherwise, this is a great driving tour that allows you to go at your own pace!
Highly recommend this product. We initially bought one package for the volcano tour and loved it so much we purchased the package for the entire island. There are so many insider tips and suggestions as you drive around the island. I spent weeks planning our Hawaii vacation and then purchased this app last minute. I could’ve saved myself a lot of time just buying the app. It has GPS so it knows where you’re at and tells you all the key spots around you. Everything from the best places to eat, where to pull over and park and take the best pictures. I wish they had this app for everywhere we travel.
It was very confusing and highly unnecessary. It was a complete waste of money. You just arrive at the park and pay. No need to pre-purchase anything. They still made me pay. This was a complete waste of money.
This is the first time we've used a guide of this type. I was really pleased with the information! Two notes - take the first parking spot you see for the Thurston Lava Tube, and take water if you hike to see the petroglyphs. It's a short hike - but it's HOT!
Terrible, it never kept up with the driving, when we stopped we had to log back in every time! There was twice when it missed telling us to turn right
Did a self directed driving tour of the Volcano National Park in Hawaii. We a used Shaka app to help us navigate and get information needed to visit all the sites . The Shaka apps were just wonderful. You have to follow the directions to download the app in your phone (both apple and android phones can be used). You then plug your phone in the car and it is. Wry easy. It starts right from the beginning and guides you through every step. Will give you all the necessary information in a very funny and enjoyable way to enjoy the trip. It is like a guided tour which is very private and can be done at your pace without any rush, it was very enjoyable as it told us stories about Hawaiian beliefs about Pele, the goddess of Volcano. It was recommended in the National Park website. I was very sceptical but it senses where you are via GPS and walks you through it turn by turn. And it was I am completely sold on this Shaka guided tours and in future will be defusing it again.
The redemption code never worked even after downloading both qpps and emailing support. A complete rip off. We never able to take the tour.
Enjoyed going through Hawaii’s Volcano National Park at our own pace. The narration was very informative!
Amazing place. The volcanoes are huge. Unfortunately due to activity which we were unable to see part of the park was closed
Helped us so much during our drive through the park! It was so informative and gave insights on where to stop and when to take pictures.
Highly recommend the shaka guide for anyone planning a trip! Very helpful in navigating and hitting all the highlights.
Must do 100% best Hawaii experience walking over the crater was amazing and seeing the steam vents we loved every stop we left in the dark at 8 pm cause so so much to see and we still didn’t get to see it all , only thing I want praise was the expensive volcano house food
The narrative was very interesting, and the navigation was helpful. We enjoyed listening to it as we drove along.
I was unable to use the guide due to the lack of information. I paid 30 dollars at the park for admission. The money I spent with your company was wasted I had no ideas where to find anything.
The narration for the app was on point and matched up to exactly where we were at. It was a great way to learn about the sites.
This was our first visit to Hawaii, and without the narration from Viator, I don't believe we would have enjoyed our visit to the Volcanoes National Park. We loved the stories that went with the various sites- they were very informative and educational!
What a cool way to explore the park! The guide was easy enough to use (just make sure to download the app AND the guide before heading to the park!!). Learned and saw a ton. I will say the petroglyph hike was not what I’d call “well marked” though. It’s kinda marked but you can’t really see what you’re walking to until you get 3/4 of the way there.
Wonderful direction s very easy n helpful. Good stories n host of the volcano n Polynesians. Never missed anything in my way
We’ll done tour without it we may have missed something and with it we were able to skip our time limited visit
The offline map and narration were perfect for touring and going at our own pace! Start the app as soon as you enter the park.
Very interesting and enjoyable. Showed and talked about a lot of interesting things. Told you alot about the hawaiian culture.
awesome tour and once in a lifetime experience. highly recommended for everyone to go and experience
The tour was wonderful and very easy to use. It was so nice to be able to go at our own pace! The music was so nice in between the educational information about the park. Much nicer to do this on our own than taking a tour bus.
Great tour with lots of background information. This made the tour much more than we expected. Will be using at other locations.
Excellent tour guide! We loved that we could start and stop the program as we took our time at some stations more than others. Speaker was very entertaining and had fun facts throughout the tour. Make sure to acclimate yourself before hand as you get used to the app and service.
Was never able To get it to work! I called customer service and there was no retired call. The employees at the Volcano check did not know how to help me. Very disappointing, I spent hours trying to get the app to work.
I had difficulty accessing this tour from the viator app. Had to download the Shaka app then had problems using the codes provided. I was unable to contact anyone from Shaka for assistance as their office closed at 3pm Hawaiin time and it was 3:30 pm. I had to purchase another tour directly from the Shaka app. I am hoping to get refunded for one of the tours I purchased
I thought it would tell me more than be just a map. Kind of disappointing. Plus we had a hard time with the not audio working. I worked for the first location then nothing. :( had to waste time deleting and reloading the app to get it to work again. It was very frustrating. Even then it wasn’t very useful.
This is a very helpful app. Lots of good information and helpful driving instructions. Two cars in our group and each car used it so we all have the same info.
Once we figured out how to begin the narrative, the guide was good and we enjoyed his information. He was informative and kept our attention.
The tour is useful, inexpensive and more convenient. I get to focus on the places that my family would like to go without hustle. We travelled at our own pace in a more affordable way worry free.
We enjoyed the park and looking at the Kīlauea caldera but not with this app purchase. I could not obtain the tickets in the Shaka app and was not able to listen to the guided tour. I would not recommend using Viator
Not worth the money. Could not activate. No instructions. Waste of time. Better to talk to Park Rangers.
