This was amazing! Watching the sunrise above the clouds was so beautiful. Our driver was great and gave us a lot of information about the area. The bike ride was definitely a highlight for me. Riding through the beautiful scenery was something I will never forget.

Very friendly and knowledgeable staff, made sure that we all felt very comfortable. Despite the varied level of biking skills, catered to all our needs. Loved the share of Hawaiian culture and vegetation.
The sunrise was beautiful. Well worth dealing with the wind and the cold. We brought layers but we still used their jackets and that helped a lot. Russel was great. I didn't expect to learn so much about the history and plant life of the mountain on our bike ride. We felt very safe during the guided tour. You had a vehicle behind the group so cars would only pass when we pulled over to stop for a quick break. Otherwise, you had the whole right side of the road to yourself.
This is our 2nd time - 21 years later - and the sunrise is just as magical! It’s cold at the top so come prepared and layer up - gloves and a knit hat are a good idea and easy to pack! Then throw caution to the wind and glide down Haleakala to take in the beautiful views, scents, and sights that the island has to offer. Highly recommend the guided tour. Our guide Russell was so knowledgeable and entertaining, while providing a safe environment for the duration of the ride. This is not a strenuous activity! If you can balance on a bike, you can do this tour. Plus, there’s a van that follows you down if you change your mind!
Ride up was great with Dan, lots of great knowledge of the areas history, plants and animals. And even at that early time of the day, a sense of humor. No sunrise though, but that is hit and miss. Bike ride was great! We enjoyed the “ crater jump” and pose with the bike photo opts, made for good memories. The ride was fast enough to pump the blood and safe enough to calm the heart rate. Rabb was fun and super safe. The food however was a train wreck…. Not only bad tasting, including uncooked meat and “rubber” potatoes, but too long to come out of the micro. I believe the tour guides recommended this restaurant, sorry to say 0 stars.
This experience IS NOT worth the cost!!!....This excursion did not match the advertisement! I also requested to be placed in a van with other family members and Viator would neither cancel and refund me ....but wanted to keep my money if I canceled...this made my experience miserable!!..DO NOT BOOK THROUGH VIATOR,..but call the provider directly!!!!
The early wake up call is well worth it!!!On the way up the volcano we were treated to Hawai’i history story telling. The sunrise was beautiful and it was a wonderful experience with the park rangers singing as the sun rose. From there, we rode down the volcano in an exhilarating experience. So much fun and it was our most favorite day of our vacation.
Hosts were good, although one was long winded and got off onto real tangent about his battle with three bears and a hatchet in Yellowstone...no....not kidding. Problem was the group...the tour let two old people wgo could not ride a bike get on bikes and try. They ended up pulling the plug when it was obvious they could barely get on and off the bikes...let alone the bus. We wasted a ton of time that could have been better spent had they screened these people better. The old man fell gerring off the bus the second stop and cut his arm open. Real disaster. Our group went ahead on the ride as being in the pack was way more dangerous given the inexperience of the riders. It really sucked because we wanted the info that came with the price we paid. Equipment was great. Wish we would have done the ride without the guides and group. Would have been 100x better.
Had a great time. Totally worth it. Remember to bring warm long sleeve clothing for the top and start and then shed layers as the day goes on.
Excellent guides, very knowledgeable about the island. Very safe and super fun.
A great experience!!! The staff was super knowledgeable and we even stopped to star gaze on the way up the mountain, which was amazing. Made it right in time for sunrise which was nice because it was cold so we didn’t have to stand around and wait. We were able to leave our stuff in the van as we biked down the mountain, which was nice because we just got to enjoy the ride. Stopped to take pictures and the group had a great time. Highly recommend!
Guides were well versed and entertaining! Cycling down was amazing- a real thrill. We had ample gear to keep us warm at the top of the volcano. All staff was very safety conscious, which was appreciated. Only negative was the extremely early meeting time. Feel the coordination of meeting and riding up to the top of the volcano could have been more efficient.
The drivers were amazing, as was our guide Dru. We chose the guided tour which was a great choice as we saw many things we would have missed.
5 Stars! So Fun! Well done! I was actually very nervous about the bike ride down some 13 miles…all down hill! Bike Maui is very experienced and they know what they are doing…and, how to assure everyone was safe. It was all so well managed and fun! I’d heard so many stories but our guide, Drew was awesome! Our driver Anthony was great too… protecting us all from the back. If you aren’t good riding a bike…this ride is not for you. You need to know what you are doing. But, if you are, then it’s an amazing experience. I will also add that getting up at 1:30am to do this was not high on my list, but once up there and seeing such a beautiful sunrise at almost 10,000 elevation! So worth it! Esp. with the views of the craters. I’d say it was worthy of a bucket list adventure. I would highly recommend the sunrise trip & Bike Maui and their teams…exp. Drew & Anthony as they made the experience what it was with their awesome personalities and local knowledge.
Our family had such a great experience! Dan was our morning tour guide up to Haleakalā. He gave such great information & history about the island and his dad jokes were on point. I highly recommend winter layers, it was 25 degrees when we arrived around 5a and windy- You will be outside waiting/watching- yes, they provide wind suits but good layers are vital! The sunrise was breathtaking, totally worth the early morning wake up call! After the sunrise we went for a few more pictures with Dan before he passed us off to Dru for the bike portion. Dru was so fun, brought a great energy and had a stellar wingman that made us feel so safe! Everyone on staff listened to our concerns with care, provided us with the best safety instructions, and created a fantastic experience for our family!
This was an amazing tour! The view of the sunrise from the top of Haleakala was other-worldly and beautiful, and the trip down the mountain was non-stop breath taking views! The guides really made the trip special. Dan kept us informed and amused as he drove us up the mountain with information about the history and unique biology of the area. He really gave us a deeper appreciation of the mountain and the community. Russell led the bike ride down the hill and his experience and love of biking and Maui were contagious. We were in very good hands and were able to thoroughly enjoy our trip down the mountain. I can't recommend this tour enough! A wonderful experience!
We took the guided tour and our guide made us all feel safe and we had a great time down the mountain. Sunrise at the top was a special experience we will cherish. Fun, thrilling, spiritual and safe.
We had an excellent experience! After seeing a beautiful sunrise, we were guided down the volcano by Drew and Anthony. The bikes and helmets were in great condition and easy to ride. Drew provided tips along on the way to prepare you for the road conditions upcoming and Anthony drove the trail vehicle which allowed us to bike confidently knowing another vehicle wasn’t coming up behind us. Drew was fun and informational and Anthony kept a careful watchful eye on the group. I highly recommend doing the guided ride especially for someone like myself who was a little anxious at the start.
It was a great tour! Everyone was so nice and patient. Tour was beautiful. Didn't get to see a sunrise due to weather but tour can't control Mother Nature.
If you are debating whether to wake up in the middle of the night for this, just do it. Our 2026 sunrise tour with Bike Maui was a highlight of our trip. The Sunrise: Bike Maui picked us up, from our hotel, at 3:00 AM and drove us to their Haiku bike shop where we picked up the bikes, helmets, wind jackets and pants. Our guide, Dan, was fantastic—funny, full of jokes, and deeply knowledgeable about the island's history. He drove us up to the 10,023-foot summit while we tried to stay awake. If you get car sick, you will definitely want to take something to help you ahead of the drive up the mountain. Watching the sun break over the sea of clouds from the crater rim is surreal, however, we did not get to see the sunrise on this trip due to cloud coverage. We have seen it before, so we do know how beautiful it can be. Pro tip: It was 30°F at the top with very intense wind. Dress in several layers; they provided wind jackets and pants, but you’ll want your own base layers and gloves. The Bike Ride: After sunrise, they drove us back down to the 6,500-foot mark (the park entrance) to start the ride. This is where we met our bike guide, Russell. Russell was amazing and has been a guide for 30 years, so he knows what he is doing. Russell was very attentive during the ride making sure everyone was following the rules and feeling comfortable on their bikes. The Terrain: You descend through the "Fabulous 29" switchbacks. It’s almost entirely downhill coasting—you barely have to pedal, just manage your brakes. • Safety: We felt very secure. The Kona bikes were in top shape with excellent hydraulic disc brakes, and our guides followed in a support van to keep traffic at a distance. • Scenery: You pass through eucalyptus forests and ranch lands with amazing ocean views. We stopped halfway in the town of Makawao for coffee and breakfast. What to Bring: What to bring: • Layers: Beanie, gloves, several layers of tops, warm pants and warm socks are a must for the summit. • Backpack: To stash the layers you shed as it gets warmer during the descent.
Beware! More dangerous than you think or they tell you as you are bicycling with traffic going both ways and likely that on occasion you might cross into other lane or oncoming traffic may cross into your lane on some of the turns. This happens to someone in our group and was hit by on oncoming tour bus. No incident report was filed and instead rest of group felt rushed to catch up to another group. Luckily after an ER visit wiith up to a 5k insurance deductible, nothing was broken or an internal bleeding found. The expression of feeling like you got hit by a bus is exactly what happens in this instance. We were never given the other tour bus’s information as only the bus that was following us had a conversation with the other driver. We had to start after the national park on the way down as several deaths caused the bike tour to start at about 6500 elevation. We also had to hop back on the bus for several miles as other reported deaths during due to other accidents and deaths. No need for a guide as they rush you out from top of mountain as soon as sun rises and would check with national park on their sponsored hiking tours instead. Hope this doesn’t happen to another family and hope they shut down ride entirely l. In fact, locals and hospital call the ride the Maui Deathkill. BEWARE!!!!
Our tour guides were Cory, Kate and Anthony! Absolutely 5 stars to them all! Every moment of the experience was elevated higher because of these three awesome people. They made everything so informative, safe, and enjoyable! They were so considerate of all the group and super helpful! I would highly recommend this company!
The bus driver had zero knowledge of the island and was a very poor communicator. This is not a bike ride down Haleakala, you barely get on a bike at all, as soon as you get on you are getting off again and back on the bus. The description needs to be a lot more clear, if you are looking for a bike ride this isn’t it, if you are looking to spend a fortune for a bus to drive you up to see a sunrise then this is for you.
awesome experience! you ride the bus to the top of the mountain. you leave at 4:00 a.m. dress warm! bring a backpack to shed your warm clothes, if you don't I guess you can just throw them in the van but it gets warmer as you work your way down the mountain. it is in the thirties at the top of the crater for the sunrise experience. very cold. views and pictures are breathtaking! you go down to 6500 ft to start biking down the volcano. Dru was our guide. he is very funny and very entertaining. he made the trip that much more fun! you ride the first 7 Mi downhill through switchbacks picking up plenty of speed but it never feels unsafe. the section in the middle you ride in the van because the locals don't want the cyclist riding through it. then you get back out and ride the final 7 miles back to the beginning. you stop halfway in a little town to buy souvenirs and eat breakfast. Dru is loaded with fun facts and plenty of bad dad jokes! we had an absolute blast during the entire experience. all equipment was safe and excellent quality. you will enjoy it, praise God. have fun! take good care of Dru, tip. well, he's an excellent guide!
This was a wonderful experience. The ride up Haleakala to see the sunrise was well worth it. Dan, our driver and tour guide, was extremely knowledgeable about the Hawaiian culture, the flora, and the fauna.the Kate and Anthony, our bike tour guide and support driver, took excellent care of us as we biked down the volcano and through the communities leading back to the drop-off point. I would definitely do this tour again.
Great opportunity to see the sunrise, understand the native plants and peoples and experience a great ride down the volcano. Hat tip to Dan, Dru and Steve for a great day that was a lot of fun.
Kimo was an amazing bus tour guide! The self guided bike ride was fantastic as well. Kimo truly made the trip unforgettable aside from the incredible sunrise views. Thanks for the pics and the laughs Kimo!
The entire experience, from the drive up the volcano to the entire bike trip was incredible. It's basically two activities in one trip. You start with the sunrise on top of the volcano and then ride bikes down the entire way back with awesome guides. If you're getting scared away by the early roll call, don't let that stop you -- it's a fantastic trip.
I’m finishing this review at the end of our trip, which included a snorkel trip to Lanai, surf lessons, and parasailing as well. We thought our teens wouldn’t enjoy the up early for sunrise, but they agree this was their top excursion. Highly recommend! The tour guides set you up for safety, success, and some really fun photo stops too! Would repeat this tour.
Bike tour was fantastic. Sunrise was unbelievable and the guides (Corey and Russell) were super helpful and knowledgable. Highly recommend.
Amazing views, learned a lot about Maui from our guide, Dru, who was a fantastic, funny, knowledgeable, and helpful guide. Would definitely recommend him and this experience.
Best adventure experience ever. Our instructor was informative and helped us feel at ease. It was my favorite experience.
Great time! The crew did a really good job making us all feel comfortable. It’s an early day so you’ll want to go to bed around 8 the night before and not have much plans the next day because you’ll need a nap after but well worth it. The sunrise was incredible. The little town we stopped in for breakfast was just delightful. If I did it again I might do the self guided still though this company just to try to go a little faster but if it’s your first time you probably want to do the guided. Good stuff!
Unbelievable views! Well worth it! Scary bike ride but they went through everything very thoroughly to help us feel safe and not rushed.
Best day start to finish! This crew is wonderful, funny and super knowledgable! From our bus ride with Dan up to the top to cruising down the volcano with Drew and Steve it was an adrenaline rush and a day I’ll never forget. Tip: Just be sure to get right to a Viewing point asap at top of volcano as you are sharing space with tons of people who bus or drive up there.
We really enjoyed the stargazing on the way up to the crater. It was amazing to see sunrise on the top of the crater. The bike ride down was slower than we would have liked, but that’s natural with a large group of people. Corey drove us up and had a lot of good insights.
So fun biking down the mountain and Anthony ensured everyone was safe since you are on the same road as vehicular traffic
As described! The team was super friendly and knowledgeable. Everything went perfectly. We had a great experience and would recommend and use Bike Maui again.
The views of sunrise from the top of the volcano were spectacular. Our driver, Javier, told us a lot about the area and the history of Hawaii on the way up. Drew was a wonderful and patient guide during the bike ride. The entire experience was a lot of fun, and we would recommend to anyone who enjoys thrilling bike rides!
Really cool experience. Wear sweats, bring gloves and hat. Play with your phone to know what to do in low light if you want to photo/film the sunrise. Guides are fun - both in the van on the way up and on the bike ride down. We felt safe on the guided trip down with a lead guide and a van following behind. Bring money for breakfast at the bottom.
The 2am alarm is well worth the sunrise at the top of Haleakala. The driver, Dave, was funny and told great stories. He got us there in one piece! Then we took the bus to the bike site and had a quick safety session, gig our bikes, and headed down the rest of the volcano. Riding down was so amazing. We were not rushed. Our guide, Dru, was also knowledgeable, funny, and very patient. I highly recommend this tour!
Guides were awesome. Biking was safe and amazing. Schedule was perfect. Wind and low temps at top of mountain were rougher and colder than expected. Bring at least three layers and gloves!
This was hands down one of the most unprofessional experiences I’ve ever had while traveling. We booked the Haleakalā Sunrise Tour and were promised a pickup at 2:45 AM. We were waiting on time at the exact pickup location—and no one ever showed up. We waited in the dark for over 50 minutes, tried calling every contact number provided, and got absolutely no response. No call, no text, no email. Nothing. Just silence. It’s completely unacceptable for a tour company—especially one charging premium prices—to leave guests stranded in the middle of the night with zero communication. This wasn’t just disappointing, it was borderline negligent. We woke up at 1AM for what was supposed to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience—and instead we were ignored and abandoned. If you value your time, money, or basic respect as a customer, look elsewhere. I expect a full refund, an apology, and frankly, a better standard of professionalism than what we experienced. Shameful.
What an experience! We rode up the volcano to experience the majestic sunrise, sitting on top of the clouds. We then went to get our bikes and met our guide Drew. His dad jokes the whole time were hilarious. The views were splendid. Drew taught us a lot of history of the island and volcano. He also showed us the best place to eat at lunch. 10/10
Sunrise was amazing . Very early obviously for pick up. The safety measures are important but this is new level regarding how to ride safely . I think reading the group can be assessed by ability of bikers and reminders at every bike stop how to space and be safe is a bit much. BE SURE TO PACK SNACKS AND WATER. it’s a long time with before you eat. Less talking and more biking would be more fun and what we expected . Lots of information on bus ride up the mountain and too much down when biking ; much of which was repetitive .
We had a sunrise tour with a bike ride down the volcano. Our pickup time was scheduled for 1:45am we were waiting from 1:30am. No one came to pick us up at 1:45am. No one came at 2am. No one came at 3am. After over 10 calls during that time with no answer. I finally get a hold of the driver who said I wasn’t on the list. The following morning I called again spoke to multiple people who stated they would look into what happened. No one called me back. Now it’s the following day. I sent multiple emails and asked to speak to the manager/owner Louis. Again another full day and nothing. They took over $1000 from me and I have nothing to show for it and now they are giving me the run around when Im just trying to get my money back.
First and foremost dress in layers! It’s colder than expected. Second this was a well run adventure. Russel was our bike guide and he was excellent. My daughter was a bit anxious and he did a great job teaching and making her a better bicyclist. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves! Great pictures and memories.
We had a beautiful sunrise and ride down with our tour leader Russell. He was very knowledgeable, funny and encouraging. Our family had a blast.
It was so much fun and the tour guides were fantastic (so knowledgeable and hilarious)! It was definitely memorable.
Great experience overall. The sunrise was a bust (a very cloudy day) so that part was extremely disappointing but out of their control. The bike ride was magnificent! Dru was an awesome guide. Highly recommended!!
