We had a fantastic time on our tour. We did the self guided bike tour. Kimo, our guide was really fun and interesting. He shared lots of historical information that made our visit more memorable. The views were spectacular. We got a really fun picture from our guide. Definitely recommend this tour.

Our guide, Kimo was super, knowledgeable & fun. He gave us interesting information about the area. We chose the guided bike tour with Kate & Cory as escorts to bike down the mountain. They kept us safe in an awesome setting. Along the way, they took unique photos of our experiences. The company is top-notch. We would highly recommend!
This was an odd trip. The views are amazing. The summit is beautiful. The bike trip down the mountain seems like it's outlived its novelty and bikers are not supposed to be there. For example, no longer are you able to start at the summit 11,000 ft but at 6,500 ft. Also, our tour operator wanted us to STOP at some random place down the mountain, regroup with everyone (even though we were all very spread out) and put the bikes back in the trailer and drive through an area, to appease a local neighborhood who don't like cyclists coming through. My wife and were first off and we never saw our van and driver the rest of the time down. We couldn't remember where to stop because our guide talked for an hour all the way to the top and we were never given a reminder before we set off. When we finished at the bike shop the driver still wasn't there and when he shows up, he has the nerve to say, "where were you!" Another couple who finished to right after us asked us privately, "did he scold you too?" Ridiculous. Also, my wife fell and injured herself on the trip - not the tour operator's fault, but we were helped more by the bike technician with first aid when we returned than our guide who said, "you're gonna need to stay around awhile to fill out an accident report. I’d recommend driving to the summit instead and hiking around, enjoying all the scenic overlooks on the way up and down.
We were told to be at Bike Maui at 9:30am for our tour. We arrived at 9:20 for the front desk woman to say “We have no tours booked today.” I showed her my booking confirmation and she said that our tour had been cancelled because they “had not met their minimum requirement” for people attending the tour. She told me that she called twice, left two voicemails, and sent a text but yet I received no communication at all. I did not get a cancellation email until 9:24am - 6 minutes before our tour was to begin. They obviously did not try to contact me at all. I highly doubt that not one text, call, or voicemail came through. They could have cancelled the tour and sent me the email but yet they didn’t cancel until 6 minutes before the tour. I was then informed that it would take up to 3 business days to get my refund. Not once did the woman apologize or try to explain anything. We wasted 4+ hours driving there and back to our hotel. Very disappointed and would not recommend to anyone.
We ended up changing to the guided tour, and we’re glad we did. If you have never done this, I recommend biking with a guide. The guide was able to help us safely navigate the roads and we had a great time!
The guided tour is much better. If you booked a self guided my recommendation is to switch to a guided bike tour
Fantastic ride. Absurd conformity with “no ride Kula.” Why in the world would there be a requirement not allowing bicycle riding on a public road? Dumb. Dumb. Dumb. Interrupting a ride that with all logic should actually start at the (10,000 feet) top, but starts outside the boundary of the national park is dumb. So starting at 6,500 feet elevation is silly. Stopping the ride at Kula to avoid offending the prima donna residents of Kula is even dumber. I love Maui. But the pretentiousness of residents is overwhelming.
We have a great time! Our guide Russell was organized, fun, informative, and provided us with all the safety and guidance needed. We even had some rain but it did not deter enjoying the ride down!
Was probably the best part of our trip. My daughters were nervous but in the end they both loved it.
Way exceeded expectations. The drive up to the top was very information and the driver way great! We felt totally safe and cared for on the way down. A great experience even for someone not super comfortable with biking.
We had a wonderful time biking down Haleakala. Kimo was our tour guide and he was extremely knowledgeable on the history and nature of the area. He took us up to the top where we got to take pictures at two overlooks (other companies only do one) and then we descended slightly in the bus to reach the starting point for the bike ride. The bikes were well maintained and even head gears to assist in the uphill peddling (very minimal). I would book again with them immediately and would absolutely recommend others to do the same.
Absolutely hated it . I'm just not doing it again terrible experience . Who wants to jump off a cliff on a bike from 7000 feet?? Do you not care of life ? I am not gonna do any activities that makes me sign a death waiver . No thanks not my thing . If others find it joyful sure go for it. Just not me. This whole Maui is terrible experience and I just wanna go back . I'm sick of it
Great service, good organization. Safety is obviously a priority. We had a lot of fun, and the downhill run was exhilarating. Too bad that local laws removed the middle portion of the ride, but Bike Maui did a great job of dealing with that situation.
Kimo is fantastic! Exceptional knowledge of Maui including plant and animal life. Provided great safety and ride instructions. However, it was disappointing to learn during the pre-ride instructions that the section through Kula is closed to riders. I would have benefitted from being informed ahead of time. Other than that, Kona bikes are great to ride and scenery is always wonderful.
Our family had a great time. The "Guided Sunrise Bike Tour by Cruiser Phil's" met and exceeded our expectations. Marlon, van driver up the volcano, was excellent. He provided authentic information about the history, landscape, plants, animals and current living conditions in Maui. Marlon has a great sense of humor. If available, i would request him. We got lucky, the sunrise was awesome the day after Thanksgiving. Drew was our "Tour Guide" on the bikes down the hill. He was hilarious, had a great attitude, understands his audience and his bike skills are off the chart. I am not a thrill seeker. Drew provided a safe environment for all levels on our decent down the volcano. Don't be afraid, the 2:30 am wake-up alarm was worth it at the end of the day. Once again, I highly recommend these guys. 810 Haiku Road Suite #120, Haiku, HI 96708 Ph: 808-575-9575
My wife and I had an amazing time doing the summit tour.. didn’t have to wake up too early and had a full day of fun. our drive Nic was awesome.. full of great stories and history .. the view and scenery was great but Nic was icing on the cake and made the adventure even better We have been to Maui several time and this was our 1st time doing this and will definitely do it again Bikes and equipment was great and staff was very accommodating This is must do ….
This activity exceeded all my expectations. It was tremendous. First you go up to the summit and view the crater, which is spectacular, not to mention the incredible views along the way. Then you ride down, as fast as you’d like (or not), not once, but twice, the top 8 miles or so. The part with the least traffic. Then after a pick up on the van, you resume the ride further down, and stop in little town of makawao for lunch if you’d like. Then finish the ride. The tour guide, Kimo, is the best! Super nice guy, funny as hell, as just as Knowledgeable about almost everything, like the trees, flowers, fruits, animals, history of Hawaii, you name it. Born and raised on the islands. Definite highlight of our time on Maui (and I live on Oahu). Highly recommend.
Fantastic day with Bike Maui. Kimo, our guide, was full of useful information and is a gem of a person. I'd recommend Bike Maui (particularly with Kimo) to anyone visiting the island. Thanks for a great experience!
This was a great experience. The bicycles were first rate. Included was a rain jacket in case of foul weather. The staff took us in a 10 person van to the top of Haleakala, with the driver, filling us in on the Flora, fauna, and history of Maui. We spent some time taking in the view of the island from the top of the crater, and looking into the caldera . Truly amazing. We were up above the clouds. We then took two runs midway down the mountain from the top, through the clouds. Because of local ordinances, we had to go back in the van, and get driven to the lower 1/3 of the mountain, then completing the bike trip down. We spent lunch at a small café in a town 2/3 the way down the mountain. Had a great coffee at Espresso Mafia. Not to be missed. The trip was a full day from 8-3. One of the best experiences we had on the islands.
Our family had a great experience on the self guided bike tour. Our guide was very informative about local history on the bus ride up the mountain. Gave plenty of directions for us to remember how to bike down on our own. The bikes were safe. You do have to go on the edge of the road and be very careful of traffic, but we felt safe the entire time. We did have to rely on Google maps on our phones a few times to double check the directions. Stopped for a good lunch on the way down the mountain. Definitely would recommend this for families with older children/young adults. Be prepared for all types of weather. It started off freezing cold, had some rain showers, and lots of sun, even getting a little sunburnt.
Combo bike and zip line package. Kimo was our driver/guide up the mountain and he was fantastic. Informative and funny.
The most fun thing we did on Maui. Dan, our guide to the summit, was a wealth of info and had a great sense of humor. So many interesting facts from geology to plant/animal life to myths and legends, he covered it all. I feel like I got a year of education in a couple hours. Everyone that assisted with bike/helmet selection was meticulous. Equipment was in great shape (especially the brakes!!) Safety and the route was stressed over and over so we were confident we would have a safe ride and not get lost. A fabulous experience and one I would love to repeat next time we travel to Maui.
Highly recommend. We did the 8am self paced tour. We started with an informative ride to the park. Lots of dad jokes. Spent little time in the park and our tour guide Daniel took a cool picture which made it look like we were skydiving. Outside the park we jumped on our bikes and started downhill. We were encouraged to take our time, enjoy the views and take lots of pictures. Several places to stop for food and you're given plenty of time. The entire staff was great. The bikes were well maintained and you are provided rain jackets, helmets and backpacks. Highly recommend.
As an avid biker, this experience was a must. My wife and two teenage boys did this together. We were not interested in the guided package, as we didn't want to get held up by novice riders. Kimo, as often referred to in reviews, is a treasure and his history of area and knowledge of plants, trees and fruits is unmatched. The "winning" references were likely a few too many, but fine. The full face masks were of good quality, but as someone who rides often, this is a very easy ride. Would strongly recommend this tour on the quality of the bikes alone. What I saw others riding, by other tours, were likely not safe. One looked like a 80s BMX bike ... all steel. My only tip is have a plan to stop a few times for photos and views. My boys were off and we were down in 65 minutes. My max speed was 33 MPH, but average was 18. It is really not that steep. We had to climb a total of 177 feet in 21 plus miles. Suggest stopping half way for lunch, but my boys blew past that spot, so we didnt.
Amazing experience! A must-do while in Maui!!! We enjoyed the tour (learning about Maui), visiting the volcano above the clouds, and most definitely the bike ride. We had an awesome time with our guide Dan. It made the entire experience so positive - hearing about the history and mythology of Maui. His tour gave us all an appreciation of the rich history and culture of the islands. The bike ride itself was incredible. This day was our favorite part of our entire trip. You'll remember this forever!
Great experience. We were enticed at riding a push bike down a volcano but loved the tour and crater experience just as much. Thanks guys for making at so special and keep up the god-awful dad jokes!
This tour with Kimo was one of the best things we did in Maui. The bike down was just incredible, so beautiful and peaceful and relaxing. My whole family just loved it. Kimo, our tour guide, made the tour just that much more enjoyable because he was absolutely hilarious the whole entire trip. He was also super knowledgable about everything from plants to history. He was so entertaining and had me cracking up the entire trip. This trip totally exceeded my expectations.
We loved our time up the mountain with Kimo. He gave an excellent tour. We were all #winning. I had zero expectations for learning things going up the mountain, but Kimo provided all the information. It was a great time and a great ride. THEN: we biked down!! I LOVED it. The bikes are excellent. Brakes work great. I never felt like I was going too fast or taking a turn without proper preparation. It was so great to see the views, hear the birds, appreciate the serenity from a bike. Freaking loved it. My husband was a little more timid. It IS a lot of turns in the lane where cars go, so maybe not as comfortable for some. But I love bikes. And I love scenery. And I love Kimo. So this tour was the best!
GREAT Bike ride! It is an early day, arriving at the bike shop at 3am so highly recommend going first full day in Maui when your body is not adjusted to the time change yet. Eddy "buddy" was an EXCELLENT tour guide on our bus ride up to the crater. He is very funny with a few bad dad jokes! This company is all about safety. If you listen to their instructions, ride those hand brakes slow and steady you will have a great, safe ride. The bikes are very nice and easy to ride. provided a helmet, very nice rain jacket, backpacks. It is windy coming down the mountain and sometimes a little rainy. We shed the rain coat about 30-40 min into the ride and carried our layered clothing we took off in our backpack. Take water bottle with you. I was comfortable at the top with 2 pr leggings, 2 dry wick shirts and a fleece so their suggestion of a sweatshirt and sweatpants over shorts and short sleeve shirt is valid. It was about 35 degrees at top. Hat and gloves were nice while watching the sunrise. The scenery is so beautiful on the ride. I wish we would have stopped and took a few more pictures but we were a family of 6 so we focused on riding down safely together. Eddy took a really fun picture of our family at a few of the scenic places. Eddy made this trip even more fun and youll want to tip him at the end!!! Eddy buddy wuvs you.............
This was a once in a lifetime experience!! Truly inspiring and amazing! I was SOO worried and anxious about it but SO glad I did it. If you are worried or scared be, don't be! Just do it! Bike Maui will make sure you are safe and taken care of the whole time. It is totally worth the early get up time and the cold at the top of the summit!! Which def make sure to bring clothes, hat, warm jacket and wear lots of layers! Also may want to buy the Seaband wristbands and wear those if you get sick with motion because ride up there is windy. I puked actually which I wasn't expecting. They had a puke bag though so all was good! Haha! The ride down is actually quite easy. Way better than expected and awesome views!
This trip was the highlight of our vacation! Kimo was absolutely awesome and set the mood for our trip! He’s funny and witty as can be, all while giving us a wealth of information on the way up to the summit. Definitely request him if you can. He took us to the summit for amazing photo ops. It was incredible being above the clouds!! Then we headed down to the start point we’re he set us out on our own. I was nervous at first, but directions were easy. I think self-guided is the way to go because you set your own pace. I got comfortable pretty quick. The rush going down was like nothing I’ve ever experienced. Even all the teens were smiling ear to ear and absolutely loved the trip!
The view from the summit was incredible. I would equate it with the feeling I got when viewing a full solar eclipse. It's truly unique and inspiring as the sun starts to light up the crater, with the clouds below. The bike ride down was also lots of fun! The tour guide, "Eddie Buddy", was terrific. He was a lot of fun and gave great insight into the island's history and culture. The instruction and preparation of the entire team was excellent. This is no "X Games", macho event. These folks take your safety very very seriously. We greatly enjoyed being able to go at our own pace. If that is your desire, I'd strongly recommend going SELF-GUIDED instead of guided. I would strongly suggest this tour for anyone visiting Maui! ps - if you book thru a 3rd party, just make sure you double check the actual start time of the event. Our third party tickets had the wrong time, although the Bike Maui official reminder email had the correct time (the start time changes during the year based on actual sunset time). pps - It was cold up there. Follow the directions and prepare for high wind and weather in the upper 30s/low 40's at the summit.
Had a great time, guide (Kimo) was funny and knowledgeable. The tour at the summit and pictures were great and the views...breathtaking. We really lucked out and had a warm day at the summit and clear skies on the way down. The bike ride down was an adrenaline rush, so very cool. I would do this tour again and highly recommend it. Mahalo
Great trip. Super easy to work with, tour guide was very knowledgeable and friendly, and the bike ride was great. Highly recommend.
This was a great experience. We enjoyed the ride up to the summit and hearing all about what was around us. We even enjoyed the corny jokes, haha. Biking down wasn’t scary and we enjoyed going at our own pace. We had beautiful weather and amazing views. I wouldn’t hesitate to do this again and hope to be able to in the future with my teens.
We did the unguided tour (intentionally, not because it was less expensive) because the corny tour guide untrue stories are simply annoying. We’ll go figure we had to go up the mountain for 2 hours (yes 2 hours before you even get on the bike), in a bus with a bunch of guided tour people asking annoying questions. The bike ride itself was fun but I wouldn’t recommend this experience. We left our hotel at 7 am and didn’t get back until after 3pm. Only an hour of that 8 hour experience was spent on a bike.
This was an awesome adventure! Our guide (I forgot his name) was full of interesting stories about Maui and it's history. He gave good, easy to remember instructions for the ride down. The bike ride down was a unique way to experience the beauty of Maui. I would definitely recommend using gloves. At one point my hands got so numb from the cold air that I wasn't really feeling that I was feathering my breaks. Clearly I was because I made it down safely, but it was a strange, uncomfortable sensation. So don't forget your gloves! Otherwise, get ready for an awesome ride!!
So much fun! The tour guide up the mountain (Dan) was funny and very informative. Ours was the self-guided tour and he gave us lots of landmarks (and an excellent map) on the way up so we easily found our way down, plus he was nearby in the van if we needed anything. The summit was beautiful. We didn’t go at sunrise but it was still amazing, not as cold and not as early! The ride down is exhilarating and a little scary but I’m 62 and in OK shape and was able to do it with no issues. The unbelievable views on the way down are not to be missed. My husband said this was his favorite activity on Maui. Do not hesitate to book with these guys, it was wonderful!
This trip was booked through Viator in early June. The driver was very professional and the ride was wonderful. The problem was that the trip was booked as a guided tour, which cost more that the self guided trip down the mountain. Because they were short staffed, they switched us to the self guided and told us we would receive the refund associated with lower priced self guided tour. Several calls and promises; no refund. Be careful!
We had an amazing time! While we wanted to do the sunrise ride; in theory….we also wanted to sleep a bit later since we were on vacation. Choosing the self guided morning ride was an absolutely perfect option for us! It was so much fun, we were able to go fast but at our own pace, and we loved being able to stop in a town for lunch and walking around. “Coach” was our driver and guide as we went up to the summit. He was so nice, told great stories, and made us feel safe before we went off on our own! Can’t recommend this higher!!! It will not disappoint- Especially for those who want to sleep a little later.
We had a awesome time on this tour. Our guide Kimo was great. He gave tons of info on the way up with lots of facts about the area. They use much better bikes and brakes than other companies. We stopped a couple of times on the way down once at a general store, then again at a bakery for a donut on a stick. When you get to the top Kimo takes pics of your party and one pic he takes, well let me say I have never had such a cool pic of my husband and I. The ride is not difficult at all just fun and incredible views. Thank Kimo and all the staff at the bike shop.
Our family LOVED this activity! We learned a ton about the area on our trip up the mountain. Our guide was great and made it a lot of fun. And the ride down was perfect - exhilarating but able to go at our own pace! This was a fun trip for an active family!
Our reservation experience was a little tricky as the nice man on the phone was VERY EASILY confused. However, when we showed up, the bikes looked GREAT and the staff was VERY organized. Surprise!! Furthermore, Our tour guide, “Coach” or Niko, was the BEST!!! He knew so much and about this beautiful land but best of all, his spirituality with the island was BEAUTIFUL. He practices oneness with the land, as the ALOHA expresses. TOTAL Respect for Mother Earth. Respect for Humankind. AMAZING morning! we are so glad we did the 8am and not the sunrise. The tour UP is best in the light so you can see what he pointed out on the way down and take pictures. We would do that again!
This was a fantastic experience! Our summit guide, Kimo, did a great job educating on all of the native Hawaiian trees and plants, history of the area and about the crater. Plus he’s hilarious! He told us about growing up on Maui, adventures he’s been on, it was a lot of fun! The bike ride down was ridiculously fun! The views are amazing, and screaming down a volcano on a bike is a must-do adventure!
We've done this tour twice now - once for sunrise, once with an 8:00 AM start. We HIGHLY recommend the 8:00 AM. With an amazing tour guide like Kimo, there is so much to see and history to learn as you go up to the mountain. When it's dark out and everyone is exhausted, the sunrise ride up the mountain seems like a necessary evil. When it's sunny out and the tour guide can share their lifelong knowledge and tidbits of the region as you go up, the ride to the top is absolutely joyous. Plus it is WAY, way less crowded. I'm not sure if it's possible to request a specific tour guide, but Kimo is AMAZING. He loves his job and is such a joy to spend the morning with. He goes out of his way to make sure you and your group having a top notch experience, get great pics, and leave with countless memories.
What a great experience! Our tour guide Kimo was incredibly thorough and friendly and full of life! His instructions and helpful hints along with his vast knowledge of and love for Maui was helpful and evident. The ride to the summit was educational and comfortable. The bike ride down was a blast! I highly recommend this experience.
An incredible experience if you don't mind heights (starts around 6500 ft). We chose this experience because it's cheaper. The ride up the mountain was in a comfortable bus with our driver, Dan. He gave lots of great info while we rode to the top, and he even threw in some corny Dad Jokes. He was very thorough with the explanation along the ride to let us know where we should turn as we took the self-guided route back down. Since we got to the top around 10:30, it wasn't freezing cold. Shorts and a t-shirt were fine for me. A long-sleeved tshirt may be better if you tend to be cold. The ride itself is very easy on the legs. You'll do very little pedaling. If you're a bit nervous, hold onto the brakes! Don't forget to stop and take pictures of the incredible views. My wife and I did a sunrise tour (guided) 20 years ago. Seeing the crater at sunrise is awesome, but it makes the experience twice as expensive. The bikes can't be ridden until you hit about 6500 feet anyway, so you're paying the extra money for a freezing cold sunrise and ride up to 10,000 feet. You can get into the state park on your own time for sunrise and only pay $30/car. YOU NEED TO MAKE RESERVATIONS IN ADVANCE TO GET IN FOR SUNRISE.
This was the absolute best excursion! Everything about this tour was outstanding! Our tour guide Kemo was so knowledgeable and kept us laughing the whole time we trekked up to the top. He went out of his way to capture some amazing photos of my family “floating” above the clouds and even treated our tour to this one of his home grown avocados as a healthy snack to fuel our bike ride down. The bikes provided by Bike Maui are absolutely superb and even my 270 lb husband had a comfortable ride the whole way down the volcano. If you are looking for the time of your life, look no further!
This was the first activity we did coming to Maui and it was sooo much fun! My boyfriend and I were debating whether to check-in our own road bikes to Maui but decided it may be too much of a hassle. Plus I am not sure if our rode bikes would be equipped for this fun ride. Bike Maui was an excellent alternative to still experience riding in Maui without all the hassle. Kimo was our driver up the summit and he was awesome! Shared a lot of info and funny stories on the climb up to Haleakala, while also making sure we knew what to do when riding down. We experienced cold weather up at the top of the volcano, to sunny, then got rained on once we were reaching Haiku! It was pretty wild experiencing all the different climates of Maui in this ride. If you love to ride already then this is definitely a must. Thanks to Kimo for also recommending his fave poke place :). It is now out fav poke place in Maui. Mahalo!
Let me just say, that the experience was amazing. We had the BEST tour guide, Kimo who is a local from Hawaii. He knows every single corner of the route up. Not only did he gave us the history of the places on the way up to the summit, but he included personal stories and anecdotes (which were HILARIOUS) and pointed out fruit trees along the route plus even gave us recommendations on places to go after the tour. Not only was the tour guide amazing, the bikes were very well maintained. For anyone wondering, the MTB used is a Kona Hakalea with hydraulic disc brakes and a 9 speed disc. The sturdiness of the light frame and the hardtail design, made it a breeze to maneuver on the way down which you really picked up speed. The hydraulic disc brakes were very powerful, giving you confidence in the bike as my fiance and myself comfortably reached upwards of 30mph. My only recommendation would be to pack a set of gloves, as the grip of the bike (at least the one I was using) was a bit worn out, so my hands got sore after a while. But again, I have to say... DO THIS! YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT! Also, go with Kimo as your tour guide, he will make your day with his jokes and good spirits!
