It could rain as it did, regardless the driver the meal and the experience were great We did get a mountain experience and the intermittent views were worth it. Sadly no sun would do it again

The driver was excellent. Very knowledgeable. The weather wasn't very good but not his fault. Got to see the crater but no sunset. I'd do it again on next trip.
excellent tour guide, remarkable man. Great stories, learned a lot of history, very patient. wonderful experience!
Our tour bus was an hour late without communication or explanation. When it arrived, the door of the bus wouldn't open, and the driver had to get out and force it open. Between the muffled sound system and the monotone voice of the tour operator we couldn't understand what was being said. When we finally arrived to the national park, an hour late, we had to wait more than 30 minutes in line to enter since there was no lane for tours and also, with a storm coming the Park told us we had to leave early so we ended up eating our disappointing food on the bus full of people.. With all that being said, mother nature came through and the sunset was beautiful. But the tour itself was nowhere near worth the $500 we paid.
First of all, they were over an hour late to pick us up. Second the ride up was painful. The driver was also our guide. His voice was muffled over a poor sound system and screaming toddler in the front seat. I gave up hearing anything he had to say. At the park entrance we had to wait in line for 30 minutes due to only one park attendant. Finally reached the top 10 minutes before the sun went down. We hurriedly ate our sandwiches on the bus and then they asked us to leave as they were evacuating the mountain due to the storm. The sunset was beautiful but I would not recommend this company especially for the price. Some things like the storm was not their fault but poor coordination of pickup and also booking a toddler on a night tour plus poor idea of “dinner” was.
It's a nice experience to have. The sunset was beautiful but the sun went down so fast. It could have been better but that's out of anyone's control except God. We still enjoyed the tour and met people from different places. Just an FYI, don't set your expectations so high so you won't be disappointed.
The tour itself was fantastic! The driver/guide was an excellent driver and was extremely skillful navigating the switchbacks, hairpin turns, lack of guardrails in some spots with multi-thousand foot drop-offs The views were spectacular and we saw one of the most memorable sunsets at 10,000 feet. Dinner was a box-dinner with a nice salad and a delicious cold-cut sandwich. If there was anything that wasn't exceptional, it would be that the bus was a half-hour later in picking us up than it was scheduled. By itself that wasn't a problem except that there was no text, call, or other message to inform us that the delay was caused by construction and that it was ok. The other issue was price. It was pricey, but the deep knowledge shared by "Uncle Mitch", our driver/guide was extensive and captivating, for the entire six hours. That, the natural beauty, and the surreal experience of watching the sun set on the tops of the clouds as we looked down at them from 10K feet made all problems coalesce into nothing that couldn't be handled. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that enriches your soul. A must-see when in Hawaii.
Such a beautiful evening. One minute your so disappointed because its cloudy and raining but then as soon as the sun begins to set the most amazing sun set. Being so high and seeing the cloud base below you was a truly magical experience especially for my kiddo, she was almost lost for words. I am so glad I did not do the drive myself. Our driver was informative, fun, and we felt safe with his careful driving up and down the volcano. I see myself as a very respectful tourist and I have to say I am sick to death of picking up rubbish, trash left behind by tourists who just don’t care. My daughter and I have filled two trash bags of rubbish during our trip to Hawaii on beaches, nature reserves, in the sea, and top of this amazing Volcano. It really is not difficult to take your trash to bin.
It was amazing our driver preston was the best!
Had a terrific time up there, Preston did a terrific job giving us great information about all different kinds of stars , planets , the history of Hawaii, etc. It is also very affordable, it was a nice surprise when I saw the initial admission fee :) A beautiful atmosphere with the group and had the best time, it truly is worth waking up at 1:30 am :)))
The sunset was beautiful and the tour guide was friendly overall it was a nice experience. Make sure to wear warm clothes
We took a tour thru Polynesian Adventure to see the sunset at Haleakala. We chose not to have a car on this trip so we did everything thru tour companies. Our bus was late picking us up but when I called, they gave me an update. We met another tour bus at a shopping area to switch drivers/meet other passengers. The shopping area was nice and I wish we were able to spend more time there. The driver was friendly and informative. You can take a lot of good pictures on the way from the bus. We stopped at one of the main signs for a photo op. Bring warmer clothes to put on when you get there as the temp drops. I read that it’s colder for sunrise compared to sunset. I recommend sunset for that reason and for more picture taking as the ride up to summit would be in the dark if you go for sunrise, and you are getting up really early. Also, warm clothes take up room in your suitcase. Dinner was included in the price (sandwich or salad). The driver also had warm drinks once we got there and cookies. The dinner is passed out once you get to the top of the summit – you are supposed to eat on the bus as food is not permitted in the park. I think it would have been nice if we had a different stop to eat at. Once you get to the summit you have limited time and eating felt rushed. You can go to the very top (another .5 miles by walking 2 different path choices). We chose not to do that due to feeling rushed and the altitude change can cause breathing issues. We took many great pictures without walking to the top – this was one of my favorite excursions of the trip. For the folks that drive, parking is limited and you could be turned away. Also, you will have a long drive down in the dark. It was nice having a tour driver worry about this drive. I would recommend this tour group. My main suggestions for improvement is to allow more time at the top of the summit and have a different stop to eat dinner.
Saved the best for last. This is our last excursions before heading home. Sale was an awesome tour guide. I want to come back with friends and do the tour again with him!! He was enriched with so much history which mad the trip even more memorable.
We waited over one hour for the sunset. We could have gotten there 30 minutes before sunset and spent more time at the first stop which looked very nice. Additionally, previous bus tours I’ve taken had a guide that wasn’t also the driver. I question the safety of the driver giving the tour when he should give full attention to driving. Also, the driver/guide was very nice but his English was often difficult to understand.
Our drivers were friendly and knowledgeable. It was cloudy when we got up but the clouds broke just as we were leaving so we got a nice sunset shot.
Unfortunately cloud cover so couldn’t see anything of interest no crater, sunset or anything else of interest
Our tour guide(Al Pacino) is great. He’s very knowledgeable. We have enough time to eat our dinner and enjoy the sunset. The sunset is awesome!
Great tour. Good sandwiches. The driver was knowledgeable and a good driver. If you get car sick, take precautions
The actual sunset and views were AMAZING! I would caution anyone taking this tour that it's not just a simple bus ride as you're led to believe. You get picked up at your hotel and driven part way then have to transfer to another bus. We ended up having to wait 40 minutes and the driver didn't explain so most of is stayed on the bus when we could've explored the plantation we stopped at. When we got to the top of the mountain they gave us our pre-ordered meals. We had ordered one of our sandwiches to be a certain way due to allergy issues. When we picked up the food the driver, who had the list, handed us our 5 meals. The special meal was inaccurate so that person was unable to eat it only to find out later that the driver didn't pay attention to the list. There HAD been a meal made appropriately but apparently given to someone else! Then on the way back we had to, AGAIN, transfer busses!! This driver asked if our meal had been appropriate.. If this driver was aware, why wasn't the driver who actually handed out the food!! There was a disabled person on the trip and switching on and off busses was incredibly difficult for them.
Eight hours of my life I will never get back. We get picked up from our hotel only to spend an hour on the bus searching for other guests at other hotels or locations, going to a strip mall two times to no avail. This is before getting to the transfer location for the actual tour bus. Then the drive up the mountain with the insipid driver, who knew the weather would be bad. Get to the top , no visibility. So we get our dinner which is a box with a sandwich and salad, which we are expected to eat on our laps. No bottled water, only warm tea, which the driver said was hot when he out it in board over four hours ago. Then we trek back down the mountain only to be delivered to the wrong transfer site! Adding another hour to our time on the bus. Five hundred dollars spent for a miserable day and a lousy box “dinner”. This tour is a travesty, with no redeeming quality. I would rather have stayed at my hotel in the sun than waste a whole day on a bus. “
Wonderful experience. Alfredo Al Pacino our bus driver very k firmed and very engaging!
Good morning, I would be very remiss not to reach out to Polynesian Adventures to describe the experience my group and I experienced yesterday during our Haleakalā Sunset Tour. We arrived at our pick up point early, at 1:15 and were promptly picked up by your shuttle driver. After he asked one of our male passengers when his baby was due (the gentleman has just lost 30 pounds and is proud of it) we drove in circles to pick up three more passengers over the next hour. Two we picked up at our hotel. We stopped and waited at Safeway twice, for no evident reason. We then went to the transfer point where we joined five other passengers. Looking at the top of the mountain/volcano I asked our driver what the chances of things clearing up there were. He was vague and urged me to climb aboard. The driver was very knowledgeable and we learned much about the island. Once we reached the summit, about 90 minutes before sunset, we perhaps saw sunshine no more than five minutes over the next 90 minutes. As well as the driver and your company know the island, I am sure you knew this would be the case. The driver even spoke with the park ranger half way up who told him it was pretty “soupy “ up there. As we sat with little to do over the 90 minutes, we were finally served dry sandwiches and salad and expected to eat them on our laps , juggling everything. The only thing offered to drink was lukewarm instant coffee, tea or hot chocolate. “It was hot when I put it in there” we were told. That was four hours ago! This isn’t your first rodeo! So then we made it safely down the mountain to the pickup point, only it was not the correct pickup point. Nobody told our driver the point had changed and we had to drive 30 minutes out of our way to rendezvous with our driver. And, to make it even more ridiculous, you ended up with three vehicles to transport us when you only needed two. Great communication! So, to sum it up, we lost eight hours of our vacation for no views (I understand that is Mother Nature), nothing to drink for eight hours, an insult by our driver, and all this only cost us $250+ per person. Obviously, I am not happy, nor was anyone in my group nor any other riders.
Our guide was knowledgeable, the bus was comfortable, and the view was UNREAL! 11/10 experience!
DO NOT BOOK THE HALEAKALA MAUI SUNSET TOUR OR ANY TOUR WITH POLYNESIAN ADVENTURE. What a disorganized tour group. We received 2 confirmations with instructions and pick-up times only to be left waiting in the hot Maui sun for 45 minutes. When calling to inquire where the driver was, call went to Oahu who had to call the group in Maui and I was disconnected several times. Then we were told the driver would be there in an HOUR! So I asked about 2 hours being knocked off our tour (which cost $500.00+ for two of us) and was told we “might” make the sunset. We said we were not interested and asked for a refund. Then we received a voice message as we were walking back to our villa saying they would have an Uber driver pick us up. Not another tour guide but someone without any knowledge bring us to the top. We have a car and could drive ourselves or we could order an Uber on our own for much less than this tour cost. We thought we were getting a tour guide to talk about the sights we were seeing, and for both of us to relax and enjoy the sights. What a disappointment this has been. I can honestly say this is the only bad experience I have had using Trip Advisor/Viator and I have used them a lot both domestic and international. I was unable to give a ZERO rating. It was not worthy of even 1 star.
Amazing, Preston is very knowable if the whole tour. Recommend going with him
Polynesian adventure called me at 1:15 for a 1:25 departure and said there was a engine problem with vehicle said 30 minute delay So we waited for over an hour still no pick up. No updates no nothing called them and stated we were not waiting any longer Canceled and they refunded my trip but not my wasted time and disappointment
So unfortunately, let’s start off with the fact that the bus that was supposed to pick us up never did originally. We had to drive 45 minutes to 2 different locations to get picked up. The logistics was not good. They are not set up to pick up but yet offer a pick up on the original advertisement. Dispatch was friendly, but seems like communication was bad . I must admit, though to their credit they did give us a 50% discount and apologize for the inconvenience.. This experience is extremely weather dependent. It was drizzling and raining at the top of the mountain so we encountered a lot of fog. Overall, it is worth it. I just feel like it would’ve been a better experience if the weather was better. I’m still glad I made the adventure despite all of the bumps in the road.
This tour is worth it! The sunset was beautiful and worth the long drive. It was so cool to be above the clouds!
40 degrees and windy at the top; long drive. Worth the time for the great view and the stories along the way.
Preston did an amazing job of explaining the history of not just Haleakala, but of the entire island. Great personality and very personable. We should have brought an extra layer at the viewing spot because it was cold and very windy.
Haleakala Sunset Tour with "Al". Great driver, full of fun info 😄 Crazy, twisty road winding through the clouds. Prep for cold weather 🌡️
We had some issues on this excursion, with a confusing double pick-up process (some of our group were picked up by another driver, and transferred to the primary bus at a rendevous location), but at that location, the new bus broke down, and we had to wait on repairs and, finally, a new bus. It was frustrating and communication was confusing. In the end, we got a working bus and our driver got us to the top of Haleakala in time for the sunset. Unfortunately, our night at the top of crater was overcast to the point where we could not see the sunset or the crater itself. Visibility was probably 20 feet. Of course the vendor can't control the weather, so we made the best of it and got some cool pics in the wind and clouds. Our driver, Mitchell, was friendly and determined to help us make the most of the experience. So the trip wasn't what we expected, but we would still recommend the experience!
Our sunset tour to Haleakalā with Polynesian Adventure was absolutely breathtaking! The journey was smooth and well-organized, and our guide (Uncle Mitch) was incredibly knowledgeable, sharing fascinating stories and history about Maui and the volcano along the way. Watching the sun dip below the clouds from the summit was an unforgettable experience—peaceful, majestic, and truly magical. Everything from the comfortable transportation to the thoughtful timing and attention to detail made the evening exceptional. Highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Maui—it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience you won’t want to miss!
The driver was very informative which made the trip interesting on a rainy day. The dinner was good but the sunset was amazing!
The views were stunning! Our driver, Wendell, was gracious and knowledgeable. He was a fantastic ambassador of the Aloha way. The food portions were huge and so good!
Very knowledgeable driver / guide. He was very friendly and professional. Food was excellent. Thank you for the experience.
I had the most magical time! I definitely recommend this tour to anyone who wants to see magical views! Thank you, thank you, Windell, for the best tour ever. He is very knowledgeable about Maui and the entire history behind (the house of the sun). Great hospitality. Will definitely be booking this again next time I'm here in Maui. MAHALO!
He loves what he does. And the trip is incredible! 100% is worth it. I’m not much of a sight seer and more of active person, but I really enjoy this.
Had no idea what to expect - day was overcast, kind of discouraging if you were expecting to see a sunset - man was I wrong! As it turns out it’s the clouds that make the sunset. As you go up the mountain you eventually go through and rise above the clouds. As sun sets you see lots of colors - like the clouds are burning. Drive is tricky coming down at night - it’s chilly - Mitchell was our driver/guide added lots of local color and an expert driver - felt safe.
This was one of the most amazing experiences in my life. In fact, I have never been above the clouds to see sunset. I didn’t even know that was the thing. It was an unbelievable view.
Excellent tour guide. Great stories shared, very interesting. The sunrise was beautiful. Be sure to take warm clothing!!!! It is freezing.
Very professional. Well planned and educational. Guide is very knowledgeable and awesome high quality food/drinks. Worth the price.
Absolutely amazing !!!!! Our tour guide Gabriel was really awesome. Great views!! Good food! Good service! Loved it!!
Tour guide Gabriel was patient, humorous, and just an overall excellent tour guide. Would definitely recommend. Gave great recs on spots in the area too. Provided food was also awesome. 10:10 would recommend
I learned a lot about the history of Hawaii and I usually get carsick in rides like this but it was very smooth and a nice ride.
Beautiful, tour guide was great! Very good driver. Shared a lot of knowledge that enriched the experience. He was very kind.
The view and sunset was unbelievable. The driver was a delight telling fascinating stories on the way about his time in Hawaii and was considerate stopping at Safeway so could have snacks for our journey.
Ordinary food mostly from Deli section of the supermarket. Cold food with no taste. They take 4 hrs to complete 1.5 hrs trip to the top due to multiple stops on the way. Shuttle does not go the summit, get ready for 0.3 miles hike to the crater. The return trip is more cumbersome as we need to change the shuttle in the mid way.
Overpriced for what is advertised Dinner is sandwich to go from the local restaurant The driver had an attitude from the beginning He should not work in hospitality with such a temper Also needed to change a bus at the end of the trip It would be much cheaper and better experience just to drive there by rental car
5 STARS!!! We were picked up from our condo right on time and transferred to a larger, clean, and comfortable 24-seater bus. Our driver/tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable—I learned so much on this trip! The service was excellent. Dinner was a boxed meal with four choices (Asian salad, turkey, veggie, or mahi-mahi sandwich), followed by coffee, tea, or hot cocoa with cookies for dessert on the way back. Tip: Dress in layers—it gets chilly! Wear comfy shoes if you plan to hike up, and make sure your camera is ready. The views were AMAZING. A great experience all around!
