Really great way to see upcountry Maui. You could make a half or more day out of the trip, or be done in around 90 minutes.
We expected a nice, long scenic bike ride. What we got was a van ride with a fun guide and a few miles of coasting downhill on a mountain bike. Do not expect a workout or an adventurous ride. It's just a photo stop on mountain bikes with an optional coffee break in between two quick bike rides.
Very fun. Loved Kimo our guide. Had so much local knowledge. The town of Makawao was really fun and quaint. Recommend to anyone who is very comfy on a bike.
This is NOT meant to be a “gentle ” ride up the coast. We received everything we had hoped for and got more.
We had such a great time on the mountain. The views were spectacular, simply breathtaking. Our driver, Tim, was a wealth of knowledge and had a great sense of humor. He made the van trip up the volcano very entertaining! I would definitely recommend!
Great trip with great guides. Pickup and drop off from hotel was key. Equipment was top notch. Made the most of a rainy day.
Drivers can be crazy. Beware. I actually was involved in a collision with two cars. Because I was told how to apply brakes while depending, I was able to only receive minor injuries. I am blessed the tour encouraged us to watch the video they provide
The organizer canceled the trip via text but failed to cancel via the app. I noyified him but he told me it was up to Viator to refund the money. Thankfully, I was refunded by Viator after giving them the update. The ride was scheduled on 7/13 but the trail was closed on 7/11-15, according to the messeage. Therefore, the event should NOT have been scheduled.
Great guided tour. Dan was our driver/ guide and he was superb. He provided the right amount of information, and I enjoyed his "dad' jokes. The bike ride requires one to focus, as it is downhill and it is easy to quickly pick up speed, however, it is quite manageable. I would definitely do it again and again. I also enjoyed the initial visit to the top of the volcano.
An amazing and thrilling experience. I was scared to death but did it with no problems! All people with the organization were pleasant and helpful. Everything ran smoothly. I highly recommend it.
Starting in the clouds overlooking the ocean and valley below, you glide around turns through open cattle ranching along the rolling hills of the volcano. Ending in the oceanside town of Haiku.
Our guide was very knowledgeable and informative about the volcano, the myths that surround it, and the views on the bike ride were breathtaking. Thoroughly enjoyed the ride.
It was fun to ride down the volcano. Beautiful views and was not too difficult. It is unfortunate but understandable that we had to be picked up part way through and dropped off again as they closed a section to bike riders. It was still worth the trip. We would highly recommend it.
Essentially the slow drive up the mountain was 3 hours. Our guide was nice but slow and very chatty (which was a bit awkward0. The actual bike riding was probably an hour or less. The ride from Makawao to the store was the best part. The volcano was nice too but probably could have been quicker. They didn't explain the gears very well. All in all it was not worth the money given the limited bike riding.
What a fun day!! Our guide Dan was funny, informative, professional. The bikes were like brand new. Offered us all the gear we would need. Thank you for a wonderful day. We stopped had lunch, also did some shopping. Returned the bikes around 3:00.
It was really bad. It should not be allowed. The road is very sloppy and there is no bike lane. You bike with cars on the road which is not shown in the pictures here. The weather was very bad, Raining with 18mph wind and they still allowed it. We still went on with it because of fear of missing out #FOMO. My wife fell on her left knee due to the wind within 2 minutes of starting the ride. And that was the end of it for us!! She had a fracture and had to undergo surgery. No one should do this! Only if you are skilled enough biker to bike up the mountain, you should bike down.
This is a must do! Beautiful sunrise with views of the volcanos on the Big Island. Great tour guides! Funny and very knowledgeable about all things Maui! Dan was great… definitely recommend to is excursion!
What a unique experience… great stories and fantastic views! We had a wonderful time on the bike ride… just enough adventure!
If you like to bike for recreation... you'll love this ride. 6 miles, 2000 foot elevation drop, 15 switchbacks... TWICE! The bikes are great very solid and have great brakes! Kimo was our driver guide and shared many stories and experiences (some true some not) and was worth the price of the trip alone. We were lucky the weather was spectacular and the views were endless. Mahalo Bike Maui
Amazing experience with Tim and the crew, They were very friendly and knowledgeable about not only the bikes but the history and culture of the area. The high speed downhill experience down the crater is out of this world. I would highly recommend this tour as everything went perfectly. Visit Maui! It’s not all destroyed by the fires.
Because of local rule changes the actual bike riding is only two 15 minute repeat loops. Tim did a nice job with tour to cover short ride but this was bike ride!! Also driver left first, instead of trailing bikers, one rider crashed with bloody injuries and had to ride down to van/trailer to get first aid???
Had such an enjoyable day, The bike ride is one thing, but the experience of the local knowledge of Kimo,, our driver and guide, including the local floral, local history, tours of the area, etc., is hard to beat. We were in a small group and great people to bike the mountain with. We all had the best time and we would do it again and highly recommend this adventure to all.
Kimo (Joachim - Joe-a-kim) is the Best Tour Guide! He was entertaining and funny all the way to Haleakala. He knows everybody and has insights on all the cool spots where things grow along the way. Kimo is definitely WINNING as a guide! Prior to the trip I was worried as I haven't ridden a bike in many years, but it was a breeze. The scenery was breathtaking and the ride thrilling! We were blessed with the perfect weather. Kimo is fun and takes some awesome pics of his riders. Can't go wrong with Kimo and Bike Maui/Haleakala Eco Tours. I would do this again in a heartbeat - hope to do this with the kids some day. We met some really nice people who were also on our bike ride tour. And when you go to Makawao - I recommend O'hana Island Grinds for lunch - lovely people and the food was great! Mahalo!
Great experience. Because of some local restrictions through the middle part of the tour, we got to do the most exciting part twice, which in my opinion, makes it even better than before.
Kimi was a great tour guide, very knowledgeable! The top part of the ride is exhilarating, super fun.
This excursion came highly recommended by friends and we’re so happy we did it! Kimo was a great tour guide up and down the mountain - very knowledgeable, personable, and had lots of stories to tell :) Amazing views and cool activity to partake in. Definitely check out the local towns - so much to see and do ❤️
Had a great time on this express tour! Riding down the first part of Haleakala twice was very enjoyable and mostly downhill. We loved the views and our tour guide who dropped us off was great. We stopped in Makaweo for lunch and coffee before heading back to the bike shop and it was very enjoyable. Lots of great little shops too.
Wonderful experience! Second time doing this ride, a section of the ride has been taken out so that was a little disappointing but no fault of theirs. Would highly recommend!
We had a great time on this bike ride and sunrise tour. Our guide was very charming and lively despite the early 3:00 AM start time. Right now one of the sections of the bike path is closed, but to make up for it we biked down the mountain twice. The company did email us about this change ahead of time. Definitely a one of a kind experience to see the sunrise and then explore by bike. Definitely worth stopping in Makawao to get some treats and look around!
The experience is very weather dependent. Unfortunately we went on a day where it was light rain the entire time and very foggy so you couldn’t see more than 20’ ahead of you. The company lost a section of the ride so you do the switchbacks twice. What was annoying was the fact that if you didn’t have to ride it twice, you still had to WAIT for multiple trips/vans, load back up, and head back to the top of the switchback to ride again. Since it was raining on us, my wife and I opted to not ride for a second time down the switch back but still had to go back up to the top and ride the van down. We had a terribly slow couple in our group which made our wait to even longer. Feels like half of our time was spent waiting on someone/something. The workers clam that the weather changes every 5 minutes on the mountain but it was pretty dang consistent for the 4 hours that we spent on it. What would have been nice is if the company would have warned of the bad weather and offered a different day to ride if preferred. Also would be nice to have an option if you didn’t want to ride the switchbacks 2 times instead of having to wait. Also note that this ride isn’t actually in the National Park, it is right outside of the entrance. Only reason I gave this a 3 star is because the people were very nice and tried their best to make our experience a positive one. I’m sure it would have been if we had nicer weather.
Recommend— I’m not sure the tour guide is necessary. We did it solo and still had a tiny group feel and knew where to go. It’s an easy route
It is disappointing that half of this ride was eliminated by the local access restriction. It has definitely been spoiled.
Amazing views!! This is a fun and excellent adventure! Simply thrilling with an amazing staff to help guide you along the way!
Recently a city ordinance was passed to prevent people from biking a ~11 mile section of road. I was not informed of this when I booked the tour. It took about an hour in the van to get to the dropoff point. We biked the first 6.8 miles in 16 minutes and it was fabulous; fast, fun and good views. But then we had to stop by the eucalyptus trees and wait for 30 mins for everyone to catch up even though we were on a self-guided tour. We then road in the van for 15 mins to the next point where our bikes were unloaded. The next bikable section was through an area with a fair amount of traffic and little to no shoulder. This section included the “most dangerous curves in Maui” according to the bike shop. So in total on this trip we biked for 38 minutes and spent 142+ minutes either waiting around or riding in the van. We biked just over 12 miles. I would NOT recommend this bike trip to anyone. It was a complete waste of $500.
Guide was great and equipment was adequate. I have done this trip before and then we could go all the way top to bottom. Unfortunately government and neighborhood pressures have made the trip less interesting and fun
Unfortunately the young woman at the front desk left a bad first impression. When we entered the shop she was talking on her cell phone in an obvious personal conversation which went on for an additional 5 minutes before even acknowledging her customers (we were the only ones in the shop and only feet from the front desk.). The trip has also been modified as of February 1, 2023 so that a large portion of the middle of the ride has been converted to a bike shuttle in a van due to recent ordinances by local governments prohibiting bike tours on their streets. This is unfortunate because it eliminates such a large part of the ride (after the exciting Haleakala park section) yet costs the self-guided tour operators to provide staff & van service. Because of these factors I can’t recommend this ride at the current price (but understand it is costing the operators even more.)
The staff were very nice but the ride nothing like website promised. We missed nine miles of the ride due to new city ordinance not allowing us to ride through Kulua. Half of the ride was removed. We were not offered any discount for this inconvenience.
The guide on the bus was great, the upper views were wonderful but the middle piece missing was a huge disappointment and the time through town after check in was in eventful, just like riding through town with traffic and nothing really to see.
We had a great time. Great tour guide. We would do this again. The bikes were in good condition and everyone was very helpful.
This was such an exhilarating experience! We had to get up very early to meet in Haiku, but Ray made it so much fun that it was well worth it. While we did not get to see the sun rise due to clouds, we did get to hear the locals chant which was beautiful to hear. Then we packed up to head to the entry of the national park. From there we rode our bikes almost all of the way back to Haiku in the sun, mild wind, and lots of rain for the last 25 minutes. The scenery of the valley below was so peaceful. We enjoyed our stop in Makawao at Espresso Mafia coffee. Everyone enjoyed their drinks there. The locals are so friendly that we stayed awhile and talked with a very sweet couple who live nearby.
Not as advertised. We had to reload onto bus for 9 miles (40%) of the ride. Had to make constant “safety” stops. This was not a self guided tour at all. Completely disappointed.
The guides, Dan and Tim were great. They made the drive up to the top very enjoyable. Self guided trip down the mountain was exciting. Had lunch in Mackawao. Will recommend to friends.
We took the morning tour with Kimo -- he was great and told stories about the region the entire way up the volcano. The tour gives spectacular views, recommendations for places to visit, and they provide all the equipment (including jackets and backpacks if you want them). Bike Maui does a great job and the tour with Kimo is *HONK*, winning!
Very good weather. On our drive up to the start of the ride, Kimo, our driver, provided a lot of local info on that portion of the Island as well as some of his personal stories. Having bikes with disk brakes is a must!
Tour guide was awesome, equipment was good quality and good condition. They even offer jackets, pants and backpacks (no extra cost) if you don’t come dressed for the cooler temps at the higher elevations. The views - especially the top portion where we started the ride - were beautiful. My only hesitation in giving a full five stars is that there is no separation between bike traffic and the cars on the road. This is not the fault of the tour company, it’s just how the route is. The entire ride is either on a narrow shoulder along the highway or in a few places where there is no shoulder, you have to share the lane with cars, and the cars have no room to pass when there is oncoming traffic. Road speeds are posted at 20-30 mph and well signed to alert drivers to the presence of bicyclists, but still if you aren’t used to riding so close to traffic, you might find this a ride a little nerve wracking. If you are a confident biker you will enjoy the trip very much. Keep in mind there are no bathrooms once you leave the meeting place, and also realize that you aren’t going to get a lot of exercise as this ride is 95% downhill.
The comedy act on the ride up was entertaining and informative. Great job! Unfortunately, the clouds rolled in, obstructing the view.
Dan made the drive up great. Very fun & knowledgeable guy. This was a great ride with my 15 year old son.
Excellent driver, Nokum, and tour guide, Tim. Loved the non-pressure of a self-guided trip. Received great instructions of how to get back to bike shop. Weather was beautiful! Had not been on a bike for at least 5 years and was surprisingly comfortable getting back on saddle.
The bike ride down was shorter than I thought it would be but thrilling nonetheless. The ride up was seemingly the treasure of it with our guide Nico - this man is a treasure to Hawaii and an awesome person for this world. Loved the adventure - adored the trip up with Nico!
