One of the very best places to view a sunset on Maui is atop the 10,000 ft. summit of Haleakala and our sensational Sunset Tour is the perfect way to enjoy the view! This exhilarating tour begins with a guided vehicle tour of the Upcountry area as well as Haleakala National Park. Our Certified Interpretive Guides will share with our guests the unique Culture and History of Maui and specifically the Upcountry area during the tour. Once inside Haleakala National Park, our interpretive guides will explore subjects such as the distinct geology and ecology of the surrounding area. Other topics of discussion include Traditional Ocean Navigation and Hawaiian Mythology. Once the sun goes down, our guests will be treated to one of the best places on earth for viewing the nighttime sky.

They should have canceled from the get-go. We literally paid a ton of money to see nothing. The driver picked us up and he was late. Even though they asked us to be there early and we were there, and we sat and waited. It was fog and rain the entire time. Even the weather forecast stated it was not good and we for sure thought it would be canceled, but it was not and because it was so expensive and couldn’t cancel we ended up going on the trip. Although the driver was very nice and knowledgeable. He just was over the top. He talked too much! As for the dinner, it was lukewarm, and we sat in the van eating it. It was very mediocre. We realize that they need to make money and that these tours probably go well for the most part however, when all of us spent as much money as we did, it was so disappointing. All of the passengers on the van were disappointed and we were just ready to cut our losses and wanted to get back to our ship but the driver talked and talked and talked, and he didn’t get any clues from the whole group that we were tired and we wanted to just get back to our ship so we could do something fun and instead we just sat in the van basically for six hours doing nothing. I would never recommend this trip because you’ll end up in the situation if the weather is bad! We realize that they couldn’t do anything with the weather, but as I said this trip should have been canceled!! I would say look for a different provider for this experience…
Sunset tour gets back little late but great experience. The views and scenery amazing throughout . Enough stops for restroom and food/snacks. Our tour guide Mike was extremely knowledgeable of history of Hawaii especially Maui and the volcano.
See all the beautiful colors without getting up at 2 AM! Michael was a wonderful guide who was truly passionate about Haleakala National Park. The views on the way up are spectacular and not driving allowed us all the ability to enjoy them. The sunset was amazing but what we most enjoyed was seeing the stars. Breathtaking! It was nice having a choice from a menu for dinner. Also, there were plenty of bathroom spots. Getting a chance to talk to the Menehune was fun.
The tour was canceled the day before and I did not receive any messages. Horrible experience .This company is not reliable , not recommendef
It is breathtaking and it will get cold once the sun goes down. Mike did an absolute amazing job!!! He was knowledgeable, friendly, and very prepared. We went back and forth on going ourselves or with a tour, and I am glad we went with the tour. I highly recommend this tour.
The sunset at Haleakalā was absolutely stunning and well worth seeing. Unfortunately, the tour itself was disappointing. Our guide was a genuinely nice person and clearly passionate about sharing information, but there was simply far too much talking. I don’t mind learning about the history and culture, in fact, I enjoy it, but there was almost no quiet time to take in the scenery or enjoy the drive. The commentary felt constant, and the delivery wasn’t particularly engaging, making the ride feel much longer than it needed to. The tour also included more stops than expected, which pushed us well past the scheduled return time. We were supposed to be back at our resort by 10:00 p.m. but didn’t arrive until after 11:00 p.m., leaving everyone exhausted. The included dinner was another letdown. Rather than enjoying a sit-down meal, we were given a takeout container to eat on the bus, which felt underwhelming considering the cost of the tour. If you’re considering this tour, know that the scenery is incredible, but be prepared for a very long day, a guide who provides nearly nonstop commentary, and a fairly basic dinner. I’d recommend looking for a tour that offers a more relaxed pace and allows guests more time to simply enjoy the experience.
If you can choose a driver Michael Reed is the one to choose. He made the excursion great. The told us Hawaiian history, cultural facts, jokes and he added his personal touch like keeping our dinner warm until we ate, after he served us hot coco. He was mindful of the 7 hour tour and made timely bathroom breaks. On the way down Michael stopped on the side of the road to “thank the Menehune”. I’ll leave it at that as I don’t want to spoil the surprise. Of course the sunset was beautiful and after he showed us stars and constellations. A great tour.
Our tour guide Michael was very knowledgeable about Hawaiian culture and made sure we had a wonderful time throughout the tour. Dinner was delicious (verry generous portions) and hot chocolate or tea after sunset was a welcomed treat to warm up. The sunset was breathtaking and staying to do a little stargazing was incredible. The bus was clean and comfortable. Thank you for allowing us to join your Ohana for the tour. For future visitors: definitely make sure you bring multiple layers. The wind is brisk and temperatures drop quickly at the summit.
This is a once in a lifetime experience that combines history, ecology, and stars. Our tour guide, Michael was well versed in everything, with plenty experience dealing with a disparate group of people. He kept us interested and informed by starting many stories and coming back to them to complete at different points. There were few questions asked because he covered everything. The sunset encounter was so fascinating because the light changed rapidly and was over before we knew it. But what came next after most other people left the park was so memorable. One by one, the stars blinked open. Michael was ready to direct our attention to the constellations, adding facts about what they meant for ancient people. He supplied hot chocolate or tea to keep us warm. I would recommend this trip to older kids and adults.
The best tour I have been on thus far! Would book with Mike, our tour guide, again. Very intimate setting, Mike was so nice and very knowledgeable. I love how we were picked up at our hotel, dinner was provided, even hot cocoa or hot tea! Worth every penny!
Exciting tour to Haleakala! Amazing views and such an incredible sunset. Michael is the best!! Very informative and we learned about the history of Hawaii, the plants, and the wildlife on the island. Food was excellent with lots of choices. Michael truly cares about his guests, refers to us as his ohana, and makes the tour a fun experience for all! We even saw amazing stars after the stunning sunset. This tour is highly recommended, a must do when in Maui!
Sunset on Haleakala is the best! Tour guide, Michael, was awesome. Great info and lots of fun extras!
Michael has tailored this experience down to the last detail. From the moment of pickup, he related information about Hawai’i and Maui. History, geology, botany - he knew it all. Dinner was delicious and the added treat of hot chocolate after being outside in the cold was most welcome. Stargazing after sunset was gorgeous and having time to do so is an excellent end to the time up the mountain. Highly recommend!!! We will probably do it again next time!
We had originally signed up for a sunset dinner tour with different tour group who never showed up. However, this turned out to be a blessing as we had such an amazing experience with Bike Maui / Haleakala Ecotours. We were in a group of 8 and Michael was our tour guide and van driver. He did a fabulous job in providing us such interesting historical information and about Hawaii in general. He also made sure we got an extraordinary stargazing experience. When the weather changed at the top of Haleakala he stopped at 7,000 feet. The weather was still bad, so he stopped at 5,000 feet and — what a show of stars!! He also provided us with hot chocolate or tea after the chilly sunset. Michael definitely earned a 5 PLUS stars! We would highly recommend this tour.
Michael our guide was super knowledgeable and friendly. He knew and shared so much about the national park, Hawaiian history and about the native fauna and flora. Very entertaining and informative tour. We had a lovely sunset and saw the night sky, highly recommended.
I took the tour with Hawaiian tours ! And our tour guy was very kind and knowledgable about the Island and culture, story telling from generation to generation. He allowed us to enjoy the sunset from beginning to end 😍🙏❤️👏👏👏
The tour guide was friendly and entertaining. The food was good. Great sunset. Very windy and cold, a jacket with hood is recommended. Enjoyed the tour a lot.
Our tour guide Mike did an incredible job. While expertly navigating the road up the 10,000 foot mountain, Michael entertained us with his vast knowledge and warm sense of humor. We stopped at a wonderful bistro along the way. My lunch which was included in the price of the tour was the most delicious crabcake sandwich that I’ve ever had. I enjoyed eating it while gazing out at a fluffy layer of clouds and the sun glistening off the Pacific Ocean and the Maui coastline. Mike helped us get our cameras ready for a spectacular sunset. The highlight for me was the stargazing where I had to look closely to find the constellations in an amongst the thousands of stars.
Very disappointing we didn’t get to see the sunset or the stars. Michael was an awesome tour guide & tried very hard to make the best of it but weather did not permit food was great pricey excursion only to be disappointed
It was an amazing tour with some of the most breathtaking views that left you emotional. Sunset , star gazing and a great tour guide named Mike. Thank u for the experience and memory.
Amazing tour! The guide was friendly and knowledgeable, the scenery was breathtaking, and the entire experience was unforgettable. Bring warm clothing is SUPER COLD!!!!!
We had such a fun time learning about the history of Hawaii from our guide, dinner was DELICIOUS. We were unsure if we would get to see the sunset, because of clouds, but at the very last minute everything cleared up. We are used to the cold Midwest, so we brought sweaters and blankets, but could have used something heavier (and water resistant). The hot chocolate was so nice. And the sunset was something you just knew was special and not something you would get to see often. If you are reading this, DO THE TOUR!!!
Mike, the tour guide was an excellent guide. He was well-versed and had outstanding knowledge of the history . He was very professional helpful, and made the trip worthwhile. Dress in layers because as you reach the summit, it will be very cold and windy. Although the day we chose was cloudy, it did not ruin the trip. We managed to get beautiful photos of the sunset and the stars. The dinner was very good, fresh and tasty. It was bought at a local restaurant on the road up. You had options. We chose the chicken sandwich which was huge. The bread and vegetables were very fresh. It is definitely an excursion worth your time
Michael was fantastic!! The best way to see Haleakala and sunset and stars after... it was our 10 year wedding anniversary and Michael made it special. Thank you
Unfortunately, could not do this trip because of the wildfire the national park was closed but the tour company was excellent in keeping us informed about the situation and flexible in even rescheduling it. We were not lucky enough to do this trip but will definitely do this in future
Mike was wonderful he has soo much knowledge about Hawaii and he was so sweet he made it exciting hearing the hawaiian legend stories. He kept us alert, and aware of everything he's a great tour guide and story teller. Food/Dinner was very good as well enjoyed also the star gazing...never any dull moments. Thanks Mike and Mahalo!😉😊
This tour was more than I could ask for. Everyone always does a sunrise tour, but sunset is the one. Mike is very knowledgeable, considerate and very passionate about Hawaiian culture. He takes good care of all his guests and goes above and beyond. Dinner is honestly very good and better than I thought would be. Views are breathtakingly beautiful, you won’t regret this tour.
My wife (27 weeks pregnant) and I booked this tour for our trip last week. The day before the trip, my wife started to get worried about being at altitude with the baby, so I called the tour operator and inquired about cancelling for a refund. Admittedly, this was within 24 hours of the tour start time, so we were not officially eligible for a refund, but I was asking for an exception and hoped they would be understanding of the situation. I left the call with the tour company under the impression they would issue a refund, but to do so, I needed to go through Viator to request the refund. After calling Viator, they sent a cancellation request to the tour operator as expected. However when I called the tour operator the next day to see what that status of the refund was, they told me they said no such thing about approving a refund, as we were not within the cancellation window. The tour operator was very animated (bordering angry) on the phone with my wife, and at this point my wife and I had already skipped the tour. After a number of back and forths with both the tour company and Viator, we're basically out of our money and have no tour to show for it. I wish I would have known we were going to get shafted, because I might have been able to convince my wife to take the tour despite the altitude (with a lot of effort), but based on the promising phone call with the tour operator, I didn't think it was necessary.
We had bill as our tour guide he was excellent. Very knowledgeable and funny. Would recommend to anyone visiting Maui.
