Big Island: Fat Tire E-bike Tour Through Volcanoes National Park

Outstanding tour using e-bikes of Kīlauea. Started with tutorial of use of bikes and demonstration and practice until everybody on tour was comfortable (and we had people of different ages and abilities). Then made multiple stops with good explanation of the history and status of Kīlauea. Ended with a hike through a lava tube and return. Over 650 feet of climbing but was super easy since the great bikes provided did most of the work. A highlight of our time on the big island!

Nicole was a very good guide and patient with first time ebike riders. You will see a bit more than by car alone as you get to access a road closed to vehicles. Ensure you have rain gear and recommend you bring a change of clothes. Even with my rain jacket I was soaked. Highly recommend it was a blast despite the rain.

Nicole and Derek were very professional, knowledgeable, and personable. They did an excellent job in explaining the volcanoes, Laura and Fana, and operation of the bikes. The bikes are a wonderful experience and very fun to ride throughout the park. Would highly recommend this tour.

We so appreciated this tour company's ability to accommodate us as we had an unplanned event that made us late, and we were still able to catch up with the tour - a lifesaver as we really wanted to do this tour! Derek (tour guide) waited for us, got us caught up to the group, and together with other guide Bill, led us through an exceptional tour with great safety tips to make sure we could ride safety, excellent narration of the sites, and just general humaness that made us feel like we weren't 'just another tour group'! Nicole is an excellent guide. Her knowledge of the volcano and Hawaii's plants and animals is outstanding. We were given good e bike instructions and watched to make sure everyone was safely navigating the trip.

Great way to experience this volcanic region, esp. for the first time. Nicole was very knowledgeable, taking the time to explain the science, history and uniqueness of the area. But left us plenty of time to open the throttles on our comfortable ebikes!

I did this tour in July it was fantastic! So I recommend to four of my family members when we arrived it was pouring rain I get it it's Hilo. We proceed to the summit it was raining so hard you could not see the bike in front of you like dangerously poor visibility got to the summit and visibility was about 100 feet this tour could not deliver not even a partial view absolutely fog white out conditions the guide kept saying welcome to a rain forest, no it's a volcanic park this trip should of be canceled not a money grab. Put it to you this way if I booked a fishing trip and there was poor ocean conditions the skipper would cancel. Half way through the ride the guide asked if anyone felt in danger they could go back half of the group returned I believe this trip should have been cancelled due to poor visibility conditions not a money grab of 225.00 per person not to deliver anything the park had to offer. My first trip was fantastic it did rain a little but this trip we were riding in two inches of rain on the roadway. What should they do is offer another trip next time on the island free of charge or at least at a substantial discount.

First Derrick our tour guide was amazing. Gave us some great history, lead us to all the best viewing spots and a Jaunt through the rain forest. The e bikes were well maintained and super fun.

5 Star Day! The volcano erupted as we biked down into the crater park. The bikes were fun and easy to ride. Our tour guide, Derek, was very knowledgeable about history, anecdotes, nature, and stories of the island. This day was one of the top highlights of our trip!

Incredible experience on our ebike tour! The ebikes were the best I've ever used and we have done bike tours in a few countries! Derek was knowledgeable about the aina, fun and laid back, but still professional and attentive to all riders. I would recommend this tour to any tourist or local.

Absolutely FANTASTIC! We are 73 and 63 years old. We joined our family in their early 50’s. It was so much fun. We got to see an eruption, tour a small volcanic tunnel and get in LOTS of riding. It was the highlight of our trip!

Best way to see the park guide was very knowledgeable about the history better than driving around in the car for sure a little wind in your face

We had a great time! First time using e-bikes and Derek (our tour guide) made it easy to figure out! He loves the island and the national park and had a lot of knowledge about the trees, foliage and island history and made it a fun excursion! Riding through the rain forest was so cool! It was cloudy and rainy, but it cleared by the time he took us by Kīlauea so we got to see it. Highly recommend, definitely bring a rain jacket. Plan to pay an entry fee into the park, although if you are active military or a veteran, it is free.

This was a great experience! From the pickup at our ship we received lots of info about the area. Got fitted and briefed on the e-bikes and practiced a bit before we took off. This was a great way to travel around the park. Felt very safe and had great guides, I believe Tyler and Nicole were their names. Patient and informative. We were lucky enough to see the volcano spitting as it was expected to go at any minute. Highly recommend and now I want an e-bike!

My husband and I had a great E bike tour booked with Nathan today and he was amazing! We were lucky and it was just the two of us plus Nathan. Nathan made sure we saw everything we wanted and made it so much fun whilst giving us all the interesting facts. The E bikes made is so much fun!

Tylor, our first rate guide, was a wealth of information regarding all aspects of Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park! We loved his vast knowledge of this specific ecosystem - including Kilauea and Mona Loa - two of the world’s active and largest volcanoes, his personal unique insights and affable congeniality. Given it was our first e-bike tour experience (literally meaning our very first time on a e-bike!) there was some trepidation initially, but his step-by-step tutorial soon put to rest any concerns or worries we may have had. Of note, Tylor stressed a reassuring emphasis of safety and it being paramount given the sharing of the road with the multitude of park visitors. It was well worth the cost given the three hours covering a large expanse of the park you wouldn’t normally see if on your own. Derek was a wonderful guide. He is very knowledgeable about the park history and the surrounding landscapes where we stopped for fantastic views. This ebike tour is the best one of the 5 we have done across the US.

Be prepared to take lots of photos at stops! The learning curb is very forgiving for first time riders.

The e-bike tour of Volcanoes National Park was the highlight of our Big Island vacation. In just a few short hours we were able to explore the park and enjoy the volcano sites and the incredible landscape. Derek, our tour guide is excellent and has a lot of knowledge of the park and very patiently took photos of everyone in the group. We will treasure these pics forever. I highly recommend this tour.

EXCELLENT! Joe escorted us from ship to the park entertaining us along the way with island history and fun facts. His son and daughter-in-law were leaders for our particular group as there were two groups. Son & DIL were young (by our standards), patient, helpful, and approachable. We viewed the active volcano from three different vantage points. We were given time to shop in the Visitor's Center which was important to me as I wanted a medallion for my walking stick. Unfortunately for the son and DIL, my husband didn't bring cash for a tip when we completed tour. If Square had been available, we would definitely left a nice tip. This excursion is a definite recommendation for any of my family and friends. Great experience for my memory vault. Thank you "son and DIL" - which I could remember your names.

Derek was an awesome guide for our fat tire bike tour around Hawaii volcanoes national park. He was super friendly and funny, and very knowledgeable about the volcano and about Hawaiian culture. He shared many stories with us and even shared some of his own pictures of the erupting volcano since we had unfortunately missed it by a day. We visited multiple lookout spots including the devastation trail and we also went to the thurston lava tube. Derek also took photos for us at each stop!! The bikes were easy to ride and well kept. We would definitely recommend this tour to anyone who wants a little adventure!!

I’m giving 2 stars to this because of how nice the guide was when we arrived - awesome teaching of the e-bike and all around nice guy. BUT we never got to do the tour because the park was closed!! Which the tour company knew and after driving for 3 hours the park rangers would not even let us tour at all. We had texted/emailed/called the tour company and they had promised to let us know if we needed to cancel.

We were very impressed by the depth of the information and the clarity of the presentation. Nicole was a fantastic guide. I do recommend this tour.

What a great way to visit Kīlauea and the ever changing landscape of Volcanoes National Park. Bill and Derek were a blast and had us cruising around the park while learning new tidbits about the volcano, local flora and fauna, and park infrastructure. Bikes were in great condition and fun to ride. Loved it!

We had so much fun riding through the park on e-bikes. I was a little nervous at first, but quickly found myself comfortable and having fun. Our tour guide Bill was knowledgeable and generous with insights that made the scenery even more enjoyable. The ride took us along the park roads alongside other cars, but each leg was short enough to keep the excitement high. We experienced the full range of Big Island weather in a single morning—rain, sun, chilly temps, then heat—and it all added to the adventure. (Definitely bring a rain jacket, or grab one at the trailer when you arrive.) The drive from Kona is about 2.5 hours, which is a solid trek, but it was absolutely worth it. After spending so much time at the beach, this active, unplugged experience was the perfect way to break up the days and see a completely different side of the island.

A wonderful way to tour volcano national park! We have a lot of Brown the guides were super knowledgeable, friendly and took a lot of pictures. It kept us safe and you’re able to get into parks where walking and feasible would definitely recommend. It’s about a three hour tour mostly on bikes, but also places to take pictures and also areas you need to walk to such a great time !!

Fantastic tour! Great bikes to ride and amazing instruction and guidance from Tylor and Nicole who were full of information and genuinely seemed to love what they do. Bikes are easy to ride and very new and well maintained. No trail riding, all on NP roads which are smooth. Sights to see are good with plenty of photo ops along the way. Highly recommend this tour!

This was a fantastic way to see the Volcanos National Park! We were able to explore the park quickly and get to places that cars cannot reach in our three hour tour. The tour guides were very helpful and explaining the science and history behind the park! The bikes were easy to learn. I have never used an E bike before and did just fine. Going through the tour on the bike also provided insight to other things that we might wanna see on our own time and having the ability to see the best way to get there and work it into our schedule.

We had the BEST time with Nichole as our guide!! Don’t even think twice book this trip now because it’s the best way to see all the wonders of the volcano national Park. The detail about the plants and the lava lake and how and when things happened we’re absolutely fascinating to us and the bike ride was terrifically fun. We have a host of memories thanks to Nicole spending the day with us.

Best way to view a lava fountain is from a fat tire e-bike! No parking hassles, great instruction and guidance, and a really fun ride!

This is a must do for anyone who wants to cover a lot of ground at Volcanoes National Park and be active doing so. We had a fantastic three hour ride with Derek who took us to the many look outs not accessible to cars. The e bikes were easy to ride and made the sightseeing extremely enjoyable versus riding in a car and waiting for parking and sitting in park traffic. Derek was a wealth of information about the volcano and the park. We got to visit the Volcano House among many stops throughout the park including exploring the Thurston Lava Cave. This is a must do if you love an active vacation and want to see as much of the park in three hours. I highly recommend it.

This was an amazing bike tour that was timed perfectly with the episode 51 eruption. Nicole is a pro that got us through heavy park traffic due to the eruption and we were able to see the eruption from all the different angles. The bikes were comfortable and had plenty of power. I’d highly recommend booking this tour.

Derek was a great tour guide, took us to great places. Bikes were in great condition. Tour by bike is the way to go. No worries about parking and you get right to the areas you want to be without hassle.
