This is a private one on one lesson where you will get the maximum attention with your own personal instructor. Once arriving at the beach, you will be sized up for gear with a foam top surfboard, reef walker surf shoes to protect your feet and a SPF surf shirt to protect against sun burn and surf rash. After getting outfitted with gear a hands on demonstartion will take place covering all the fundamentals of surfing, including proper technique and etiquette, the pop up method and a detailed on shore and in water safety briefing. All lessons are 2 hours total. Complimentary drinking waters will be available after each lesson.

Our kids had the best experience with our instructor max. They are ages 9, 11, and 13. He gave great instructions prior to surfing and was very knowledgeable about what to help them with in the water to that they could be successful surfing. I felt very confident of his supervision of them in the waves. They had a BLAST. We look forward to them continuing their surfing fun with max next time we are in the island.
We had a great experience with our surf lesson. It was only 3 people in our group with 2 instructors. Isaac was our instructor and took the time to really make us very comfortable. He was very encouraging! I would definitely book again next time we come to Hawaii and request Isaac again!

Max and Thomas were Amazing ! My boys had the best time . They learned a lot, and can’t wait to go out again. On a side note, I was bummed by the amount of pictures that were taken. I think only 5 . So that was very disappointing. We’ve done this in Maui and they took at least 25. Which I purchased. So a missed financial opportunity on their part. But the guys were Great!. The lesson was great! I’d definitely recommend them 🤙🏽
We've surfed with Ohana on many occasions now and have always had a great experience. From taking out our littles to the whole fam, they've always done a great job making it a great experience. This last time Cobie took out our 9 and 12 year old and they had such a blast. Cobie was patient, encouraging, made it fun for the kids, and helped them catch a ton of waves. My son was so confident after Cobie's help he was trying to catch waves by himself on the way in. Kaleo, the owner, is also an incredible instructor. He's also very responsive and accommodating. The instructors helped create some great memories. My boys enjoyed their lesson. The instructors were informative regarding surfing and local places to visit. The location was a safe place to learn how to surf. This location allows you to be in proximity of the surfer lesson and a spot for other members of your group to take advantage of snorkeling. Win win for a group who may have different interests.

Koa ,Brady and Andre were awesome at helping our family how to surf. They were punctual, professional and fun. They also sent me good clear instructions on how to get there and find them. We were the first group out on the water and got lots of practice time. My son liked it so much that he signed up for a second session the following morning. Highly recommend this company.
A great first-time surfing experience! As someone in their early 30s trying surfing for the first time, I expected the lesson to be challenging—but Kai made the whole experience approachable and fun. He was patient, encouraging, and really guided me through the basics so I could get a feel for surfing. The only minor issue was with logistics: I didn’t receive a heads-up beforehand from the surf company and had a bit of trouble finding the exact location. A quick message in advance would make it perfect. Highly recommend for beginners!
An exceptional private surf lesson experience with cool dudes and the best vibes. I have had the pleasure of paddling out under the guide of Kaleo and Koa on different occasions. Been coming to and loving this beach since my keiki days and these dudes are genuine locals with great energy who will give you a magical no-pressure beginners experience on a board. Pro tip: let the reef breathe and experience Kahalu’u on a surfboard instead! You won’t be disappointed. Even if you just paddle out on a clear day you’ll feel like you’re surfing an aquarium and those reef rides are real fun and zippy. Mahalo my dudes! Amazing lesson. I did a group lesson on a recent trip to kona. The instructor was great! The location had great waves but wasn't to challenging. I felt very safe the whole time, the instructor was very clear and friendly. He was obviously knowledgeable. If you want to learn how to surf i would highly recommend these guys. The instructor got me up and I road 6 to 10 waves over my 2 hour lesson.
I’ve been born twice: once thirty years ago in a hospital at the hands of a surgeon, and again two days ago in the Pacific Ocean at the hands of Kaleo. One was medical, the other was magical.
My daughter had a great experience with the private surf lesson in Kona with Ohana Surf. Her instructor Max was amazing. She learned what she needed to on land, then with his help timing the waves, she got up every time after the first wipeout :-). Was a perfect amount of time (not too little, not too much) and was her favorite activity of the whole week on the Big Island. Thank you Max, from your friends in North Carolina!
We took lessons two days in a raw as we had such a wonderful time. Max and Koa are fantastic instructors. We felt very safe and could catch waves many times. The ocean is so clear and waves are calm, perfect for the beginners. These instructors are remarkable young individuals. We could learn a lot about the island and people here on top of surfing skills. We will definitely come back!

I had a great time! This was my first time ever getting on a surfboard. I wasn’t sure I could do it but my instructor Bradley was amazing. He was a great teacher, with good instruction. It was so much fun! The instructions were great and I stood up.on the board on my first wave, then I was able to consistently surf the waves after 30 min of instructions and the lesson was a blast.
I’ve now taken 3 private lessons with Max & I have nothing but glowing things to say. No doubt that Ohana is a great surf company as Kaleo has helped me with modifications to my reservations with ease. That said, Max has the secret sauce when it comes to teaching. He’s got a good head on his shoulders, really focusing on making sure not to over complicate your surfing experience. I was able to get up by day 1 but I experienced the joy of riding a wave today, which speaks to his incredible ability to be a guide. I’ve got the surf bug and it’s definitely because of all of Max’s help — the cherry on top is what a great & funny person he is apart from being an instructor. If you’re on the fence with other companies, choose this place & ask for Max! What a gem. Mahalo
I booked two group lessons this week and both classes and the booking process were perfect. I highly recommend asking for Max as an instructor. He is calm, sociable and makes you feel at ease at all times.
Did quite a bit of research before booking a lesson. A lot of people had a lot of good things to say about Ohana surf lessons, and they seemed like a smaller company as compared to some of the others, so I decided to schedule a lesson with them. I was able to schedule a lesson through their website, and they followed up very quickly with a text message confirming everything and providing very detailed directions to the beach where the lesson would take place. Beach was only 10 minutes from where we were staying in the waterfront area of Kona. Max was our instructor. Super chill and laid back dude. He did a really good job explaining everything and getting us through some dry runs on the beach. Once we hit the water, his enthusiasm was pretty infectious. We were able to get up on our first waves, and Max was cheering us on the entire time. We were probably “catching waves” within the first half hour or so, and spent the rest of the time in the water. It was awesome. Max was awesome. Communication with the company was spot on. If you’re looking for a good company for surf lessons, I highly recommend Ohana Surf Lessons!

Alex and Koa were great instructors. We did the private surf lessons (kids 12 and 14) and the instructors were so great and patient. My kids loved every minute. The company was great about communicating about a change in location when the waves weren’t big enough at the original Spot. Great experience and definitely a memory to last a lifetime.
This was hands down my daughter’s most favorite part of her trip to Hawaii. The instructor was friendly, and made her feel safe and comfortable the water. We will definitely be back again next summer.
Daughter and friend , both teenagers and beginner surfers had a great time. The instructor was super patient and worked his butt off to get them on waves the entire time. The girls were able to stand up by the 2nd wave of the session. Overall, it was a great time for the girls and definitely a highlight of their trip to the Big Island.

These guys work hard! Water was rough the day we went. The instructors helped to tow us around. They give everything you need; board, rashguard, water shoes, water. You just got to come ready to work out!
My 10 year old granddaughter wanted to learn how to surf. Our expectations were exceeded! She was careful to listen to all of Max's directions in the practice on the surf board while on land. She was able catch several waves, with a helpful push. She was also able to stand up on the surf board by herself and thoroughly enjoyed her lesson with Max. Thank you for the excellent instruction and a great memory for her. My only regret is that I didn't bring a better camera for distance photos.
Was wanting to catch some waves before taking the late flight out of Kona and Kaleo came in clutch. He was very helpful in setting me up with a lesson just the night before, and let me know how the tide was the morning of surfing. Such a chill and encouraging dude. The morning of, got a quick ground lesson and then my instructor, Brad, and I went out for a 2 hr private lesson. Shoutout to Brad. Had a great time with you man. My son (13) and I (41) really wanted to do surfing on our last day at the Big Island, and Ohana Surf Lessons made it happen! They helped me book a last minute semi-private session via text messaging and a phone call. Their spot was easy to find and they provided a rash guard, footwear, and of course a beginner board. Brandon was an awesome instructor and gave us the basics on land before jumping into the water. He did a great job telling us which waves to catch and when to paddle. He also gave us helpful pushes to make it easier for us to surf! I loved the "surf talk" between everyone while we were waiting for the right waves to come in. I would highly recommend Ohana surf lessons!
