Itinerary
In the middle of the Old Quarter, Bach Ma Temple is one of the oldest and holiest temples in the city, which was originally founded in the 9th century. The translation of Bach Ma is White Horse and this refers to a story behind the construction of the Temple. King Ly Thai To had been struggling to build the temple as its walls kept collapsing. It is said that a white horse delineated the best area to build the temple with its hooves to help the king in constructing the temple. Entering the temple through some ancient wooden doors after which you will be able to see the beautifully decorated interior and a red-lacquered funeral palanquin. Inside the temple, you will find a statue of the white horse, a shrine to Confucius, and a Phoenix Altar for offerings to the four seasons. Bach Ma Temple is still actively used by worshippers who come here to burn incense and pray.
Being an unique architecture everlasting with ups and downs of Hanoi capital, Long Bien Bridge has become one of the symbols of the city. The bridge is not only a traffic construction but also a living historical relic. Undergoing French and American wars, Long Bien Bridge has witnessed many historic moments. Long Bien Bridge was constructed from 1989 to 1902 during French occupation of the country. Not many people know that, with the length of over 2km, Long Bien bridge used to be the second longest bridge in the world, just after Brooklyn Bridge from American. Interestingly, Long Bien Bridge is the only bridge in Hanoi which allows tourists to take a walk along the train track, taste some desserts or buy fresh vegetable or fish from the vendors on the bridge. What is more, visitors coming to Hanoi said that Long Bien Bridge is the best place to look at the sunset and taking some nice photos.
Dong Xuan market was founded in 1889 by the French and named after its location. At that time, the market was a favorable trading place, especially after the French built Long Bien bridge. You might not know, every ancient street in Hanoi was named after their original business, which were then being removed to Dong Xuan market under the French domination. That is the reason why all of the names are started with the word Hang (means Product) and the word following is what they are selling: Hang Ca sells Fish (Ca means Fish) etc.
Explore the highlights and hidden gems of Hanoi’s Old Quarter on this private guided walking tour. Highlights include a visit to the Bach Ma Temple, one of the oldest in Hanoi, the historic Long Bien Bridge, the bustling Dong Xuan Market, and more. Along the way, learn about Hanoi’s history, culture, and food from your local guide.

Fantastic experience with Jasmine as our guide. We were the only two on our tour and we felt we this was the absolute best experience. We learnt so many new things about the Vietnamese culture that we otherwise wouldn't have.
Had a great morning with Thien. He gave us some brief history of Vietnam and different places around Hanoi. It was great having a chat with him and getting his perspective on things. Great time.
Guide was great - Angelina. We explored the authentic part of old quarter and learnt history of the city
A great experience wandering the streets of Old Town with a friendly and knowledgeable tour guide. Highly recommend this tour especially for your first visit to Hanoi.
Great tour, got to see a learn from a true local. Our guide was very knowledgeable and took great care of us.
Kien was an excellent guide! His personal knowledge of Vietnam history and culture mixed well with his time living in USA and Ireland. English was excellent so he understood question right off. We started tour with a beautiful view of the city from a rooftop lounge, then inside for cold iced coffee and history lesson (sitting in the air conditioning!). We walked to a few interesting places including a tiny alley to see how some live in Hanoi. Kien described culture of "shop roads" and "fake paper" -- things that you wouldn't know just by walking the old Quarter. Highest rating for this walking tour and Kien as our guide!!
We had such an interesting and enjoyable tour with Angelina. It was our first day in Hanoi and it gave us a great starting point for understanding the city and history. The tour was a combination of information, history, conversation and trying some local food along the way. Angelina was a wonderful guide, very open, knowledgeable and fun! So interesting to see some places we wouldn’t have gone on our own.
Learned a lot of Vietnamese history which I didn’t know. Our guide Minji was charming and very informative.
We had a trip with Dung. She took us around the city and told us plenty about Hanoi. She shown us several interesting things and we loved it. I can highly recommend this tour and Dung especially.
Dung was a great guide. Her English was excellent, and she was very friendly and open. I felt I had the opportunity to learn more about how people reallly live, as well as some history/orientation. My only disappointment was that the sites and markets were closed for the 6pm tour, which was NOT clarified for me. Had I known, I probably would have done a different tour. Still, I enjoyed the chat and opportunity to see the city at night with a local. Plus, Dung bought me a treat of delish donuts! I bet the earlier tours are super.
What a fantastic way to get to know the old quarter (where we were staying) and to touch up on some of the local history from a Vietnamese perspective. Our guide, Yen was incredibly knowledgeable and generous sharing her experience knowledge. Her insights into Vietnamese culture and the local area helped to really set the tone for our stay. I will definitely recommend this tour to friends and family.
Mina was a fantastic host and extremely knowledgeable about both Vietnam’s general history and the specifics of Hanoi. The itinerary gave us a good pace with time for drink breaks (essential in a warm climate) and very nice points of interest. You can tell it’s well thought out and gives some great insight into the local life and what makes the Old Quarter unique. It has the right amount of mystery, intrigue and education with charming personal touches like the donut lady. Mina’s knowledge of the family business’s history, tenants, historical occupation etc of each spot were extra special. We loved it and would recommend to friends!
I think I was unlucky. It was the guide's final trip and he really just wasn't interested. Expect other guides will be better.
Great way to see and learn about the old quarter of Hanoi. My guide was friendly, informative and fun. I highly recommend this trip (and Yen Dung as your guide).
Kien Pham met us at the meeting point on time. He took us around the old quarter as per the itinerary and explained to us everything in great detail. His grasp of English, knowledge of history and sense of humor was excellent. We were offered complimentary refreshments during breaks throughout the tour. Overall an excellent experience.
My sons and really enjoyed our afternoon walking tour with Mina. We saw and experienced things that you would never find without a guide. She was very informative and friendly. This was recommended to us by a tour guide we met in Ho Chi Minh City. Would highly recommend this tour.
It’s our first time going to Vietnam and we can only explore Hanoi due to the limited time we have. So my sister booked us a walking tour in the One Trip by Local website. The tour company made sure we understood where to meet our guide, photos and all and our guide was Mina contacted us the day before the tour to confirm everything. So communication was great! We met Mina and we already know the vibes was going to be great just by meeting her, I think it helped that we’re somewhat in the same age group. She was more than punctual, we got there early and she was already there! We started off the tour with the view of the city on the rooftop of a hotel and got some amazing coffee afterwards and we learned and discussed Vietnam’s history. Mina’s storytelling was clear, you can see she’s so passionate about her country and history. But what really stood out for us was the honesty she presented, learning about the horrors Vietnam has suffered at the hands of colonizers and invaders. After having the eye-opening history lesson with our coffee, we headed to explore the city. She brought us to different places, from historical buildings to narrow alleyways! Giving us the background and history of each place and how it functions now in the present. And she offered to take our photos multiple times as well. She may not be everyone’s cup of tea but she certainly was ours! To hear it from a local’s point of view is both educational and fascinating. We learned so much from the short time we had with her!
Mina was an amazing guide. Her English is excellent and she has a deep understanding of Vietnam's history and current affairs. She listened carefully to my interests and organized the perfect day. Her knowledge of the area really paid off. I highly recommend Mina. It was a great way to start my Hanoi adventure!
Our tour of the Old Quarter with our local guide Lana went way beyond what we expected. The two hours passed so quickly, with lots of variety of experience. We started out sampling local egg coffee at a fascinating coffee house at 11 Hang Gai- what a hidden oasis! Then we explored some of the Old Quarter streets, gaining lots of local tips from Lana. We sampled local food, toured the beautiful traditional house at 87 Ma May and just as our energy was flagging, Lana organised a Xich Lo tour back to our meeting place. This was a very well structured and informative tour, with a knowledgeable and enthusiastic guide- great value and very entertaining.
Great insight on Vietnam and Hanoi past and present. Nice and professional service from Quam. I really liked all the stops we made some I did not expect and was a nice surprise. I hesitated a lot before booking it and I'm glad I did.
This is a must do tour. Cong was a great host with a small group of four on the tour. His enthusiasm and local knowledge really allowed us to relax and visit parts of the city that you would never normally know about. 100% recommended.
Cong was an excellent guide, he shared his knowledge of The old quarters which would have been hard to do on our own as this area is a maze of narrow streets and alleys, would highly recommend this tour as a quick insight to this area.
This tour was way beyond what we had expected. The history, the personal stories, the sights, the smells, the tastes, the contrasts - all combined to make it an incredible experience. Many thanks to Quang for a chance to taste the best banh mi in town.
Can’t say enough about our wonderful evening with Niki as our guide through Hanoi old quarter! In 3 hours we stopped at 7 wonderful “street food” spots and learned and tasted and bantered with the locals. It was our second trip to Hanoi and we experienced so many things we hadn’t done before. Niki’s great enthusiasm and knowledge of her country made for a great evening.
Quang was a great guide! Very knowledgeable about the hidden parts or Hanoi we experienced. Great humour and shed some light on aspects of the life of people who live in Hanoi’s old quarter. Thanks Quang!
Cong took my son and I around the Old Quarter. He was very knowledgeable and answered all our questions. It was a great way to learn about the history and prepared us for exploring the area on our own. Highly recommend.
Wow! If you want to find out about the real Hanoi, its history, culture and people, this is the walking tour to do. You’ll get to see how the people of Hanoi lived in the time of the French, during the communist rule and now. Vu is a magnificent tour guide with above average English, very knowledgeable and very likeable. Try some Vietnamese snacks, have a 360 degree view of Hanoi and a cooling drink. Don’t miss it!
Tour guide Vu very good in English, very knowledgeable, great trip if you like to know more about Hanoi’s history, culture and traditions
We had a fantastic tour with Vu! He had very impressive knowledge about Vietnam and particularly the Old Quarter in Hanoi, and took us to a variety of hidden spots we would have otherwise not been aware of. The tour was very engaging and definitely a must for your stay in Hanoi!
We did a lovely old town Ha Noi walking tour. Great way to learn about some of the history and traditions of Ha Noi. It was especially hot the day we took the tour and we appreciated starting in a hotel on the rooftop to learn about the history of Vietnam and the city. Our guide was great at understanding what we knew so far and tailoring to us. Walking around old town, learning about the streets and the temples, visiting the market, was fascinating. We loved learning and trying egg coffee and donuts too! Ha Noi is a little chaotic but this tour made the best of a/c and non a/c outdoor spaces. We felt like we learned so much and very much enjoyed!
Excellent tour. Our guide Vu was very knowledgeable about the history of Vietnam and the city of Hanoi. Showed us many interesting places and spoke great English.
This was a great tour! I learned so much about Vietnam and Hanoi. Vu took me down alley-ways that I never would have seen on my own and taught me how and why people came to live there. I highly recommend this tour and Vu as a tour guide. His English was excellent and he could answer all my questions. I’m so happy I took this tour.
Dip was my tour guide his knowledge was impressive. Truly he has passion for Hanoi. Really nice tour
Cong was just the best! He showed us some of the best of Hanoi while explaining it's history and background. He was very patient and answered all of our question properly. Cong has a really good English level, helping a lot on the experience.
Huyen was our guide for the tour through the old quarter. She guided us to interesting locations like a hidden temple and old local houses, and offered us insights about local culture and food. It was an excellent experience for me to hear about these details from Huyen.
I love making free tours and i made lot of a round the world and this One made by Huyen was one of the best I had in my life and we will never forget it. She took as through very alternative places that we would never go if it was not for her. She showed us local houses, special markets, secret temples, the best vietnamit cafe and hidden and awesome places and more. She also teaches us a lot about vietnamist culture, habits and their history. She has an enormous and positive energy. She shines! We learn and laugh during the whole tour. It’s really really interesting. We had a great moment and she makes us love hanoi. Now we know a lot of it and we always will have hanoi in our hearts thanks to huyen. We really recommend it Tito
Huyen was a wonderful, friendly tour guide! She showed us the real culture available in Hanoi and answered our many questions along the way! She was so kind and chatty and we felt like we got a real feel for authentic Hanoi culture! Would definitely recommend this tour! Thanks so much Huyen!
Quong was very helpful and knowledgeable. He helped me find a place to eat, withdraw money and most importantly taught me how to cross the busy streets. He’s a gem of a person and very passionate about what he does. Couldn’t recommend him more. We became good friends!
Tom is a perfect tour guide! Can converse in english really well, friendly and awesome recommendation!
Amazing tour in Hanoi! Dive into the history of Vietnam and into its culture for ≈3hours. You will be able to see the life of the locals and taste the local food. I really recommend :)
We got to know the “real” old quarter thanks to Quang. He is very knowledgeable and always happy to answer any question you may have. I would recommend him as your guide if you ever want to explore Hanoi.
Excellent tour of Hanoi, with a great guide in Quang! Would fully recommend! Gave a great overview of Hanoi as a city, how locals live, as well as stops for local treats such as egg coffee and Banh Mi.
We had an amazing tour with Quang! We had an easily identifiable meetup location and walked around the city for several hours. We saw some things we would have never seen on our own such as small alleys and authentic Vietnamese homes. Highly recommend this over wandering aimlessly around Hanoi!
We had a great tour today with Zel. Together we had so much fun. She told us a lot of hanoi and the history of her country. Also we had a great lunch together at 'bang mi 25'. Please book a tour with this lovely girl. Zel you did a great job!! Thank you so much!
We had an excellent tour with One Trip in Ho Chi Minh City so we thought we would try their Hanoi walking tour. Mina picked us up from our hotel in the Old Quarter; her English was good and she answered all our questions. However, we only visited 4 places: St Joseph’s Cathedral, Hao Lo prison, Hoàng Kiem lake and the Ngoi Nha Di San heritage house. Nothing wrong with that - they were all interesting places to go - but the advertised itinerary included 6 places only two of which were listed above. Also, we did not get the snacks and paid for our own coffee. I think it was a mistake to go to the prison since there was a lot to see and information to read - it’s really a half day visit in its own right. This, probably, was why we felt rushed. Mina had another tour after ours and was in a hurry. This was a private tour but it wasn’t relaxed and not really worth the premium we paid for it.
Had a brilliant morning with the lovely Mina walking around the old quarter, including a visit to the Hanoi Hilton prison. She was a very knowledgable and it was so helpful having her help us get our bearings on our first day in the city. She also directed us to some amazing local food, including the best coffee at the end of the tour. Definitely recommended!
Excellent tour, guided by the amazing Mina, very nice sweet and funny. We met Mina at 9am and we were just the 2 of us. Starting from st Joseph we went to the prison then the heritage .
We had a great time trying new foods and exploring Hanoi old Quarter. Steve was a great tour guide very knowledgeable and extremely friendly I can not say enough good things about Steve and One trip! Also I should probably add A Thank you to Sonny from YouTube (The Best Food Review Show Ever) for recommendation!
We were met by Steve right on time. He not only gave us an informative and delicious food tour but some history of old quarter as well. We are vegetarian and he was able to accommodate us with our specific needs. Steve greeted us with delicious "donuts" as well, perfect start for the tour! Jenny
