The show was good, and interesting, the audience awful. Phones and videos should be banned. Its hard enough to see over tall people but when people put their cameras up you cant see anything. I had a small space to see through 2 heads and we were in row G and when I asked the man in front to put it down he was rude. I ended up watching musicians. If you can get first 3 rows go. People talked all the way through which was annoying. And the queuing up wasnt organised and when you could go in people rushed forward even though we had allocated seats. It almost caused me to be pushed over.

It was my very first water puppet show. Live singers and live instruments. It was done in Vietnamese language but i didn’t have any issues understanding. I could see female singers but not male singers. I am not sure it was intentional or not. The show was approximately 50 minutes long. Great price! I i thought there is only one water puppet show so I went to wrong address. Please check the location because there are so many water puppet theaters.
Good showcase of traditional art
Great show. Was all in Vietnamese but you have an option to purchase an audio version in your language for 50k VND. We didn’t do that and it was still easy to follow the story line of the show. Very funny and the amazing skills of the puppeteers make the show well worth the small ticket cost .
This is definitely an interesting experience. We booked VIP and were in the second row. We also rented the translators so we could hear the folk stories. I would recommend.
Lovely show depicting Vietnamese culture and history, worth seeing. But book early if you have limited time in hanoi as tickets sell fast.
totally unexpected. Whimsical, charming, unlike anything I've ever seen! Tickets sell out the day before so plan your time to see the show you want. Only about an hour long.
I booked the tickets for this show prior to my trip to Hanoi. I was excited to see this show. I purchased the VIP tickets for the front row because I wanted to see the puppets up close, be enveloped by the accompanying orchestra, and truly enjoy the experience. I arrived 30 minutes in advance. It wasnt until 10 minutes before the show started, when the theatre finally started scanning tickets to let people in, that they informed me that Trip Advisor had overbooked the show and we would not be given the VIP seats we paid for. Instead of being front row for this amazing show of a decade long practice, we were seated 15 rows back, 3-4 rows from the back of the theatre. Instead of an immersive experience seeing the puppets up close, with even the joyous splash as the dragons thrashed around the pool, we were squinting in our seats with a wall of 20-30 cell phones raising up covering our view as the people in front of us recorded the play. While the Puppet Show itself was wonderful and entertaining (what little of it I was able to watch), the experience was miserable and severely cut down on my ability to enjoy the experience. On top of that I reached out to get a refund and was ignored by the Tripadvisor Vendors. I suspect this is a regularly occurring practice to book the theatre full. Advice: find a better way to see the show besides this page.
Fun time for friends or family. The theater is easily walking distance from any spot in the old quarter and the show was great fun, especially when you know the history
Lovely, unique experience. The water puppets were fun, but for me the musicians made the show. I would go again just for the musical artistry! Some confusion between the crowds trying to enter and exit - we stood in the toilet line for a while, thinking it was for the theatre! Stay left as you enter, and go up the stairs. We’d purchased our tickets in advance, which was a big help. Paid a few dollars more for the ‘best’ seats, and worth every dong. Seats are comfortable enough, but a little tight for 6 footers.
Amazing show—definitely worth visiting! It’s important, though, to learn a bit about it beforehand. When I first attended, I couldn’t understand much because I basically an original Arabic speaker. Later, after doing some research on ChatGPT, I discovered that the show tells the history of Vietnam, which turned out to be fascinating and deeply captivating. The performance traces life from the beginning of time and is traditionally held during the rice harvest season. It’s truly a remarkable experience—especially for visitors from other parts of the world. For me, it’s an absolute must-see!
Very talented puppeteers and very delightful to watch. Forty minutes was just the right length. For us it was a perfect rainy day activity
Thanks so much PAVAN, NEHESH, SOHAM, MAKRAND for such amazing and wonderful services you do offer it's really my pleasure meeting and seeing that all my expectations are meet thanks really for wonderful services at the kitchen ihope with this it will be astory for me to tell what the kind of services HYATT offers
Review Thang Lang Just watched the performance tonight, it was great! 50 minutes flew by and I was sorry it wasn’t longer. Not sure why there are reviews saying the show is boring or made them fall asleep. The key is NOT to get the audio guide. The performance is a series of mini stories, not a long play. Outside the upstairs auditorium there are flyers in a few languages, listing out the story names. Grab one on the way in, that’s enough to know roughly what is going on. During the performance, focus on the ‘live’ singing in Vietnamese by the lovely ladies, and the beauty of the ‘live’ musical instruments. Sound system is very good. There is a wonderful call-and-answer format where the ladies speak directly with the puppets in conversations, or act as commentators on what is happening. Listen to the nuances and expressions in their voices! The show is whimsical, kitschy and fun. Let yourself enjoy it with a child’s eyes and don’t be too cynical or critical. I know it may be tough, cos some of the puppets clearly need a new coat of paint. ———— I booked with Agoda and a poster at Ticket Office says you can only exchange all online vouchers for the tickets 5 min before the show. Someone will come and distribute it. To the consumer that feels very risky because you don’t know if that person will be a no-show or you’ll get missed out. We stood around holding our voucher printout in front of our chest LOL. The guy came maybe 15 minutes before the show and approached us. IF YOU BOOK WITH KLOOK they have a designated counter where you can exchange your vouchers for the tics when you want to. If I had known I would rather do this, for peace of mind. I paid for VIP tickets and got seats in the 3rd row. Note though that even for front VIP seats, those at the extreme ends will have some blocked view due to the orchestra. Which I don’t think is fair to charge the same price for. Crowd isn’t too crazy because the auditorium is not big. Leg room is tight though, so do be on time to go in with the others, or you’ll have an embarrassing time trying to squeeze past them to get to your seats. Everyone will have to stand up to let you pass. Show starts exactly on time. I would actually suggest that the theatre troupe sell a set of printed stills from their show. The scenes and colours are so wonderful but don’t come out well when taken with our phones. It’ll sell well and earn extra income for the troupe, the audience can also watch in peace without being distracted by trying to capture those pretty moments.
The show was entertaining even I could not understand the singing. It was in Vietnamese. I enjoyed seeing it. It’s a family friendly event.
Lovely afternoon, kept the kids entertained and engaged. We all enjoyed the show! It was not too long and very well organised
Lovely theatre Excellent music Great cast Amusing puppetry A lovely traditional experience Would recommend language headsets though
A fantastic experience! The performers were excellent. We had a great time. Recommend getting skip the line tickets as the queues looked long but we went straight in. Also recommend paying for the audio guide.
Overall a good experience. Ticket was waiting for me at the entrance of the theater. The show was pretty interesting, truth be told, this is not really my thing but I have heard good things about it. The show was engaging enough. The skill of the puppeteers is pretty amazing. A couple of slightly negative things. The doors don't open until 15 minutes prior to the show, when the show started they were still seating people which was a little annoying. The music was good, but some of it was not live and pre-recorded. I recommend booking your seats early to get good seats, i've heard people complain that they were watching the show through people with phones out taking pictures and videos. It's only about 55 minutes, so it doesn't take up much of your time.
The show was fine but there should be a no photography allowed during the performance. Unless you're seated at the front row, all you can see are the screens on peoples' hand held devices taking pictures or filming obscuring the view. Little regards for anyone else seated behind.
It's a bit weird. Artistically very clever, and I'm sure the singers and musicians were excellent, but we couldn't tell because we don't understand Vietnamese music. It's quite short ... about 50 mins so even if it doesn't float your boat it doesn't take too much time. Room was quite cold. But if you want to see puppets swimming and dancing, and dragons chasing a squid in water, this is the place for you.
A perfect local cultural show! Definitely a must see if travelling to Vietnam. Something we have never experienced before
A booked A reserve and the view was obstructed, not impressed. The show itself was okay, went for an hour which was a reasonable time. Stories were fairly easy to follow.
The show was so amazing, i love it, the puppets were so good, i buy them for souvenir. Next time i go to vietnam i will comeback here, lovely
a wonderful time in vietnam, i love the show so much, the audio guide was helpful, the ticket supplier are very nice, great experience
The show was so exciting, the service was wonderful, i will comeback Vietnam next time with my husband, i love Vietnam a lot
This is a fantastic attraction and a must see in Hanoi.Suggest that you book in advance to skip the line.the show lasts about 55 minutes and the theater is really comfortable.very informative and very enjoyable.
Not really worth it - the vendor simply means it’s more expensive. Just queue on the evening you wish to go for a ticket - there are multiple shows per day so you can most likely secure a spot
Amazing service, they helped me a lot, the show was very interesting, meaningful. The supplier was so tactful, i love Vietnam
Good service, staff very friendly. I love it so much. I took my tickets so easy, no need to wait. You should book online from here to get best seats
Beware!!! Scam. Nearly didn’t get in as they were waiting to get our tickets. Joke of a company, wouldn’t book if you can avoid. Think it’s all a bit of a scam. Arrived 20 mins early and it didn’t help at all. Luckily got in with good seats as we complained and someone in the door helped us. You pay way more for terrible service. Would be better to get from the booth if able but it does sell out. Joke of a company - avoid if you can. Bought off booking.com
I’m not sure what they meant by “skip the line” because we absolutely did wait for ages in a line, it was chaos to get our tickets before the event. The show itself was ok but was hampered by people in the audience talking on their phones, taking photos with the flash on and moving around constantly. We left after about 20 minutes. At least it was cheap.
You don't actually skip any queue, missed the show as a result Very disappointed with this, you literally have to lineup to get your ticket. Joined the line 30 mins before the show and was still queuing as the show started. Total disorganised mess.
Unique, entertaining & cultural. . Helped you understand the Vietnamese history & early lifestyle. Booking was easy, efficient
Everything was organised well. We were treated at the entranced, skipped the huge line to the ticket office and had good seats in row D Thank you
It's a quaint art form but it feels like something to attract tourists because it's unique, but we didn't really get much out of it. Honestly there are so many other things to see in Hanoi that I would skip this unless you have the money and time to burn.
The show was not as good as I have seen before! The music was good! The seats were in a great position to see the total performance, but puppet performances could have been better!
A fantastic show that almost blows your mind. A must see! You don’t need to understand Vietnamese to enjoy this show and the skills by performers and musicians are second to none.
Great puppet show, something very different. It was a welcome break from the hot weather. Well worth it and at a reasonable price
Amazing look at Vietnamese culture and folktails. Interesting puppets. Backed up by traditional Vietnamese instruments. However for the full experience I suggest you get the ear piece to explain the scenes if you are non Vietnamese speaking.
There was no line skipping. Easier and cheaper to buy your tickets at the show if you are wandering past earlier Show was very good but I’d advise anyone to buy direct instead
Not recommended, because IT IS NOT Vip experience. You pay 3 times the price and get nothing extra. Go and book directly at the theatre. Its a waste of money
This was a great excursion, it was far better than I thought it was going to be. We went for VIP tickets, we were sat in the third row with a great view. It was fascinating watching the puppets, it was quite funny at times. The live music and singing was lovely to hear. This was a 50 minute show, I would recommend the experience.
The show was amazing and in-time. It included traditional daily activities in rural area of Vietnam. Also it included the legend story of Hanoi tower or Lake of the Returned Sword and other beautiful scenes. Our kids enjoyed very much and it was unique art show only seen in Vietnam I think.
So glad we booked this sbiw. It was amazing. What skilled puppeteers they are and very entertaining. We didn't have the English audio which was fine but perhaps would have made it even more enjoyable we had.
We very much enjoyed the water puppet performance. We recommend getting the translation device. It makes the stories more understandable. The puppet masters are very talented and the musicians are wonderful as well.
Even though I had no idea what was being said it was amazing! The puppeteers are incredibly talented! The puppets are very well done. The musicians were amazing. The women singing had amazing voices! Totally worth the money!
The show was very well done. The puppets are charming, the special effects are surprising and the music was incredible. The show itself was funny and entertaining. A great place to witness a traditional Vietnamese artform.
Cute show. What the performers can do with just poles behind a screen was really impressive. The show is in Vietnamese so it might be best to pay the little extra to get the translation headphones
We were really glad we went to this show. There were about 17 little vignettes, explained by the English language audio earphone we rented. It wasn’t expensive and was worth it to understand what we were seeing. The puppeteers waded out for bow at the end. Worth seeing!
