Great ride, best of the big brand bicycles, knowledge of the area. Joe is in the business for over 15 years and all expectations where easily exceeded. English speaking made it very informative about the surrounding nature that was realy astonishing beautiful. All senses were served and I felt sorry the day went by that fast. Certainly not the last time to go with Joe. Just go there, you won't be disappointed. Thanks Joe, see you soon some time 🚲👍

You'll travel with a small group no larger than 15 participants, meaning that you can enjoy a safer and more personalized service with your guide. Anyone with a moderate fitness level who can ride a bicycle may enjoy this full-day excursion; a support vehicle follows. On arrival, snap on your helmet and climb on your mountain bike for a ride through green rice fields, following hillside paths belonging to a limestone mountain. You'll pedal about 1.3 miles (2 km) uphill, then roughly the same distance downhill, before heading up a single dirt road through 11 miles (18 km) of rock gardens and trails. Afterward, stop at an eatery where lunch will be served. Following lunch, you'll meet up with the minibus for the drive back to Hanoi with drop-off at your hotel.

We did 3 days mountain bike with Joe, that was great ride , delicious foods and very good bike with Cannondale full suspension . Hard climb , interesting single track, if you looking real mountain bike should do with him
My first (definitely not my last) trip with Joe --- A+ guide, excellent English, encouraged my fellow rider and I take things at our own pace, customized our journey as we requested. Took us to beautiful trails that would have been impossible to find otherwise. Great trip! Highly recommend! - Nick, Michigan
Ok so no tigers or cougars but our guides nickname was Tiger and he was good fun! We couldn't pronounce our drivers name so called him "Cougar" who we trusted implicitly as he weaved the minivan around the chaos of Vietnam traffic. We had a really remote experience in the hill tribes in the Sapa region. The accommodation was really good and the food was good - noodles isn't my ideal start to a big day out so Tiger was very flexible and took us to another local eatery who made Vietnamese style pancakes which pretty much was a large round pancake shaped noodle- very clever cos it worked for my headspace. He then took us to the best coffee shop and there are many!! The coffee in Vietnam is sooo goood - rich, dark and choclatey.
With only a 7 day window to organise our first trip to Vietnam for my 18yo son and I, Joe at Marco Polo travel was able to help us arrange a magnificent riding experience through the mountains of the Da and Red rivers, west of Hanoi. Thankyou very much to Hieu and Mr Goh, our wonderful and knowledgeable guide and support van driver (a retired engineer enjoying being out in the countryside!). They were always making sure we had what we needed and worked tirelessly to ensure our happiness and complete satisfaction. We had a great ride with just the right amount of time on the bikes allowing us to experience the wonderful local cultures. Visiting the Bai Dinh temples and Pagoda was off our original schedule but was one of the highlights that Hieu added to our trip on "the run" . These temples are set 1klm in length up the hillside, with 500+ Buddha statues a "must see" and largely off the tourist map. The MTB bikes were fantastic too: Cannondale Scalpals with XTR groupset and Rock Shox adjustable suspension. I will be back and I couldn't recommend Joe and his company highly enough to arrange the next tour! (If you are trying to decide to ride from saigon or hanoi, the North enjoys the spectacular limestone foothills and jungle mountains which provide wonderful views and is generally cooler. The van was right behind us (or in the vicinity when we were offroad) if we needed more water, gels or simply a "lift" or a "sticky bidon". We were met in each village by welcoming families, often with fellow "bike riders" joining us with beaming smiles and greetings of "hello").
We were introduced to the hotel one day tours around Hanoi and finally chose one day biking. What we are most worried about is the traffic in Hanoi, it's very bad. Mixed traffic and dangerous. We were very fortunate to be guided navigation and safety to us. We have so many places to visit in Hanoi for 1 day, enjoy a variety of Vietnam's dishes. We like the most is to be eaten PHO and beer in the old quarter. Thanks for the company and guide named Tom.
We love the trip to Hoa Binh. It was a really beautiful and peaceful province. Biking helped us to better observe the daily life of the people there. Hope to visit Hoa Binh again someday. Thanks a lot Vietnambiking tour.
We had a great bike tour from Hanoi. The website has recommended trips. I emailed our own wishes and they customized a trip for us. Countryside morning tour was great. Tour guide were so friendly and knowledgeable, the guide spoke great English. We stopped to visit homes of local people and learned about their lives and their trades. It was great to get off the beaten track and learn about the Vietnamese people. The tour guides were fantastic. This is HIGHLY recommended
We did a 7 day trip from Hanoi up into the then mountains and valleys of Northern Vietnam on the 100cc bikes. Each hour, of each day, became more beautiful and jaw dropping. I would think to myself, "How can this get more beautiful?" then within the next hour we would drive into another magical landscape. The people and families we met and stayed with were just as amazing. It would be hard to describe all of my adventures with Joe, but in a few words: lakes, mountains, rice wine, national parks, drinking rice wine in national parks until one blacks out, waterfalls, jumping off waterfalls, sleeping beside waterfalls. What an amazing trip!
We went to Hanoi and had the motor bike tour booked with Marco Polo Travel. I didn't expect that I was going on a tour that was going to be the 12 days of any holiday in vietnam. It was a different world, the scenery, food, people, traditions, culture was all amazing and I believe the only fault was the end of the trip. The Guide is a great guy, shows you stuff that normal guides don't, he was very patient with us, we were all learner drivers and understood what we were capable of.
During our holiday in Hanoi we booked a biking tour with Marco Polo Travel. We chose to do the countryside biking tour. It was a really nice and interesting tour. Our tour guide was very kind and informative, and we finished the tour with a meal in a local family's home. The food and company were top notch. Highly recommended!
We booked three days tour to mai chau mountain which was a ride for about three hours from hanoi by bus. It is very good road for biking, nice view, fresh air,.... The guide told us a loth about the culture and history. He was very very friendly and good informations to us and also best price too for us. I recommend this travel agency to you all who want to traveling in Hanoi, here they can help you.
We joined the 5 days Moc Chau Mountain Biking tour, with grade stated as "Challenger", because that was what we wanted. However, the actual km done on each day were not as stated in the itinerary: day 1 - stated 67km (actual 31km), day 2 stated 80km (actual 40km), day 3 stated 65km (actual 55km), day 4 stated 55km (actual 31km), day 5 stated 30km (actual 8km). The trails - Great sceneries, mostly grade 1, 2 or 3. Suitable for those who like to have a "different" biking experience. Downhill - most tracks were groomed by motocycles . It was a little bit challenging but mostly doable. Uphill - had a few short sharp hike-a-bike sections, but mostly all doable. Except on day 1 some places were too muddy to ride on due to heavy rain the days before. The services – All good, except the guide did not have much communication. Eg: when we rode to each junction, we have to wait for the guide to tell us which direction to go. When we came to a stop, we have no idea if it was a water stop, a transit, or end of the ride. When we arrived to the Thai village on day 4, no one tell us where our accommodation and luggage located. We were only told to bring a day's clothing but no mentioned about bringing towel or insect repellent. The "towels" offered to us were 2 Used-hand-towels (!). No information about that extra scenery in the village but luckily we found it out ourselves. Accommodations: mostly ok, except the last day at the Thai village, though “interesting”, but the bed and the blankets provided might be the cause of our rashers the next day. Meals provided were abundance. Taste as you expect from small villages. Mostly edible. I can understand that the route be changed/shorten due to weather. However this was not the case for us. For our 5 days, although the weather was hot but great for biking. Even if the weather was not right, I believe as a trip organizer, they should have an alternate plan/track. No one would be happy to spend few thousand bucks and over 20hrs of flight (to and from) to come to a place to have just a few short and not-so-challenging mtb rides. [Luckily we had another 2 weeks cycling trip before this short trip so to make our vacation “worthwhile”].
We had a nice day biking through the mostly beautiful but hardly spectacular countryside/suburbs outside of Hanoi and a tasty meal in a pretty village. But the day did not merit the huge price we paid -- $125 USD per person for a total of $250 for 7 hours (including driving and lunch). This is far more expensive than other tours in Hanoi. We decided to shell out the money because of the stellar reviews here on Tripadvisor. But it didn't live up to expectations. First of all, what was advertised as a full day tour was really just 2-3 hours of biking followed by lunch ($2 for beer not included). It also wasn't really a tour -- our tour guide, while friendly, did not attempt to provide us with any insight into the areas we were seeing. His main function was to lead the way. All in all, a fun day, but probably not worth the money.
My husband and I have just spent three days mountain biking around Mai Chau with Joe Nguyen from Marco Polo travel and supported by his driver Loi. We spent two nights with a home stay family in the village and yes there was a/c in the room. From the pick up in Hanoi to our drop off at the airport our every need was taken care of and we enjoyed fabulous local customs, food and beer. The riding was beautiful and exactly what we had hoped for which in our case was lots of km and some challenges but this can be varied to suit your ability. We took our own pedals cleats, shoes and helmets and were provided with Cannondale soft tails in very good condition. My only suggestion would be to be prepared during hot months as we were riding in temps from 38 to 41 Celsius and join in with local kids for a swim in the river late afternoon.
First of all, we didnt't book a tour with them. We were on our bicycles on our way up the hill to Mai Chau, when a minibus stopped and handed us cold refreshments, which we desperately needed. The guy was very friendly and told us, that we were almost at the top. Later that day in Mai Chau we had trouble with the bicycles and called up this company, so that they might help us. It turned out to be exactly that guy who handed us the drinks. He drove to our hotel and gave us advice and even offered to take us back to Hanoi for free to fix the bike - incredible friendliness and service! I figure a tour with this guy is fun!
We just returned from our Vietnam trip and one of the highlights was a bike tour with Joe. We drove 1-1/2 hour outside of Hanoi to began our trip. We rode bikes out through the farm land and small villages. It was an awesome experience and we were able to see things that you would not be able to see on a tour. We rode around cows laying in the road, chickens running around, temples and were in locations that had not seen Caucasians. We had lunch at a 300 year old private residence which was very amazing. Joe and his staff were very accommodating and took very good care of us. We were definitely out of shape, but they stopped often for water and snack breaks. I would highly recommend taking a tour with Joe because it will be a fantastic experience.
We did the early morning around the lakes tour with Hiu on our second day in Hanoi and had a blast! Hiu arrived promptly at our hotel with bikes and took us for a leisurely ride around Hoan Kiem Lake before busting out onto more serious roads and over the Long Bien Bridge and back. He kept our time on the main road to a relative minimum, but it was enough to really make us feel like a part of the Hanoi traffic madness! The main part of the ride was around Tay Ho (West Lake), which was generally more peaceful. Hiu stopped often to tell us what we were seeing (but not too often, and always safely) and did a good job of directing us while riding. He showed us around Tran Quoc pagoda at the the end of the tour before taking us to a fantastic local pho restaurant for breakfast. All of this - about four hours all up - for only $29 per person, which we thought was a great deal. This was definitely a highlight of our time in Hanoi!
If you are a lover of adventure and mountain bikes, then this is very recommended. The tour provided by Joe was totally awesome. They provided three totally different rides for the three days that kept me blown away. They really showcased the beauty of Maichau.Joe were knowledgable and were great! He knew the area so well and managed the various levels of riders really well. I'm not a good mountain bike rider but was traveling with some. The trails were amazing and the area was BEAUTIFUL! Joe shared their culinary prowess with all for the evening meals in home stay of hill tribe villages. The home stay and eating area area made for extremely flexible evenings for post ride relaxation. The beer provided was enjoyed by all. I think, this is perfect for your vacation.
I had a great experience with Joe in Marco Polo- Hanoi bike tours. A long tour with a wonderful view on the right and left, Joe had planned and took us to difficult and challenging tracks in the hills that we have never made before. Tracks that we think is too difficult for us conquered. I tried several times and always fell as he passed it, but eventually Joe gave me advice and tricks to get through the track until successfully. Really fun and unforgettable. Because Joe, I can learn new techniques of riding MTB. Joe and Marcopolo Travel has given me valuable experience, Very helpful and friendly staff. Bikes are in great condition. It all makes me very grateful for this great tour. Maybe I would be very regret if yesterday I did not try this bike tour. After all that I feel and get, I Will definitely cycling with them again when back in Hanoi.
Some time ago, I had the opportunity to visit Vietnam and took my son was 14 years old. My son is very fond of MTB and I wanted to give him a gift of a MTB exciting adventure on the mountains north Vietnam. Previously we have found Marcopolo Travel on the Internet, they will help me for this. We made arrangements 3 days tour with them. The next morning, Joe and crew, showed up at 8 am, right on time with a brand new MTB Cannonade. ow our destination is to Macau. We take 3-4 hours, we were very happy Because along the way we treated with a wonderful view of the village. The end of the first day we had home stay in MaiChau with Thai minority village. The second day we ride in single track belong Ma river. I not look tired on my son's face, but he was very happy event and crutches Joe always ask about travel plans tomorrow morning. The second day we ride in single track belong Ma river. Perhaps the track that is too difficult for a MTB is not advanced, but Joe always helped us to get through it perfectly. Finally we finish to this fun bike tour, my son said that he wanted to do it again, but I said not for now Because we have to go back to our country. We back to Hanoi with a boat trip, very interesting and fun tour travel package that marcopolo travel given to us. I think everyone would want to try again and again to this. And if you've never tried it, please visit hanoi and do not forget to go by marcopolo travel because they are best for vietnam cycling tour. They are all professionals, dedicated, kind, funny and with passion for what they do. Thank you, I am very happy especially my son.
While many people prefer the morning to vietnam cycling, our family would like to try a new atmosphere with cycling at night. Previously we have prepared ourselves to sleep at the hotel shortly after we arrived in hanoi in the morning. Despite some concerns about biking at night in the city, my daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed our cycling tour in Hanoi with Marco Polo travel. Cycling at night is a new experience for us, really great. We are not want a quick to end this tour because our goal is to feel suana vietnam at night with cycling. Evening winds that blow adds to atmosphere in this tour is more fun because we do not feel the heat as if cycling in the morning or afternoon. We especially loved seeing the rice field , in the Cassava noodles drying before packaging for export - beautiful process and sight! and temples lit up at night without the crowds, and the wonderful small markets sans tourists. Vietnam turned out at night is very beautiful !!! Although we would like to enjoy a bike tour until the morning but we had to put an end to this wonderful experience we feel tired after cycling for 2.5 hours. I then took Joe and his team for dinner at a stall located in a side street hanoi. We enjoyed a delicious traditional cuisine vietnam voraciously. Truly a unique the night tour which very enjoyable. I'm looking forward to do more cycling tour with Marco Polo travel . Hopefully next year we can come back again for other exciting experience.
Since my husband and I enjoy cycling and have a long road bike ride we are training to do in the US this summer, we decided we would like to get a long ride in for training while on a short trip to Hanoi. Joe was very responsive and tried his best to meet our desires for some sights and to be on a road bike. In hindsight, I would have used a hybrid or mountain bike on our 90 km ride because there was a fair amount of bad road and some unpaved sections which were very jarring on a road bike, but Joe had just tried to give us all we had wanted and we switched from a less interesting highway ride at the last minute. He was very flexible and he and his cohorts were patient when my back started bugging me in the second half and I need to stop and stretch often. I loved seeing the villages and countryside and taking a local ferry across the Red River. I would just suggest picking the ride you want and going with his suggestion of what kind of bike is best for that ride. Great guy and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Joe at all.
Previously I often hear news about vietnam cycling. And I think it's definitely just a regular bike and nothing great with it.It turns out all wrong, because after I got the chance for a trip to Vietnam with my friend, so we could try vietnam cycling.Having tried it I just feel that vietnam cycling is really great and deserves to be recommended to anyone looking to vacation to vietnam. Honestly I say that Joe's team always provide an excellent service. We had a lovely week with them. The selection of mountain bike trail is perfect. They have from beginners / easy / difficult / advance to Expert only. North west Vietnam mountain trail is one of our favorite and we can ride it everyday.the tour is short but makes you want more of it when you're done. I would also like to be Able to do this trail everyday. Maybe you can ride whenever and wherever, but Vietnam cycling is different and I am sure that you will be happy and love it. Please try it! Surely you will agree with me. Once again, thanks to Joe's Team
My husband and I love physical outdoor activities, so during our trip in Vietnam a year ago, we decided to go on a guided bike tour with Marco Polo Adventure Cycling. We had chosen the Sa Pa Mountain Bike tour and had a phenomenal experience. The itinerary was well scheduled and organized. We had gone off-roading and saw the Hoang Lien Son Mountain Range, where the views were absolutely amazing. We also cycled up to the Tram Ton Pass... probably my most favourite part of the trip. It really felt like I was in a postcard! The scenery was gorgeous and beautiful. My husband's favourite part of the trip was when we passed through various rice fields and banana plantations in the small villages of Red Hmong and Kho Mu. Although we had two hard climbs during that time (couldn't forget them since they were a real challenge), we still had a fantastic adventure. Overall, my husband and I had a fabulous trip and would highly, HIGHLY recommend this biking tour guide company to anybody. We have to thank Joe and his team who went riding with us for this memorable experience.
I will share a bit of my experience when I was in hanoi, Vietnam. actually, I came to hanoi because the duties of the office and not to travel. And because of my work in hanoi, eventually led me to a great experience from vietnam cycling. Initially my friend invited me to join a bike tour organized by the Marco Polo Travel. Previously I did not even think to try mountain biking, but after I finish this cycling tour was very enjoyable and exciting. This is my first adventure in nature and mountains with cycling. The ride was long but it will all be paid the satisfaction due to besides cycling, we are offered a very beautiful natural scenery and still original. I'm sure even before you feel free to try, but after completing this cycling tour then you will surely be satisfied and happy. Don't forget to keep your beautiful moments with a camera or video, make your friends become jealous with the experience and enjoyment that you get. Finally, there are no words other than fun and exciting. Thank you Joe, I'm sure many people would be grateful to you after trying this great bike tour.
Maybe biking in Vietnam is one of the best choices I've ever done in my vacation. Two days of cycling tours in Vietnam has made me get the satisfaction that I never felt before. By cycling, we feel closer with the nature. Experience that will never be forgotten, especially when cycling through challenging mountain track. Enjoy the fresh air in the morning while cycling is the best idea of this cycling tour. Thank you Joe, you have successfully created a great cycling adventure for us.
We saw the great reviews on tripadvisor and decided to book a half day biking tour to combine a bit of sightseeing with activity. We got picked up by our guide and brought to the outskirts of the central Hanoi. Here our mountain bikes (giants with a schratch or five and gears that shifts whenever you hit a bump) and not so clean water bottles where awaiting us. We went up along the red river for 20 km over the bridge and back on the other side resulting in a trip that we could have done ourselves. Guide was friendly but not very informative.. Save yourselves the 100 $, rent a bike, buy a map and go on adventure..
This was one of the most fantastic trips I have ever done and I have biked in many places in the world. We started with a couple of nights in Hanoi and than did a nine day bike trip through absolutely beautiful places. We had wonderful food good lodging and great biking. We also had a great guide and driver which I am so grateful for because some of the riding did get a little long and hard with lots of mountains, we always had the option to sag. I never thought I would have to use that option but I can say on several days I was very happy for it. Joe was great, everything went smoothly we had a wonderful time before and after in Hanoi and a nice restful trip to Halong Bay at the end. Joe even arranged an overnight train from Sapa back to Hanoi where we slept like babies. We road Trek road bikes fairly new provided by Joe which fit us well and preformed well. I will most surely consider another trip to some other wonderful place in Vietnam through Marco Polo Travel
Signed up with Marco Polo Travel Adventure for a 10 day challenging "Trails of Tonkin Alpes Mountain Bike" tour in February 2012. It was the best mountain biking tour we have done so far, and we have done quite a few (Nothern Thailand, New Zealand, Bali). The terrain and biking was tough (as advertised on the website), accomodations in the mountains spartan, but rewards enormous: navigating the single track and jeep trails in the mountains of Vietnam's northernmost province, visiting Hmong minority villages, chatting up locals working in the fields, playing a game of chinese chess with a local master in a tea shop. Never saw another tourist for the duration of the trip. The trip was organized on a high professional level: the guide was enthusiastic, ready to cater to our wishes, with a good command of English language. Quality of mountain bikes we rented was outstanding (brand new double suspension Cannondale). Bikes were cleaned every night and tuned up every morning. Transportation was smooth and safe. Marco Polo Travel Adventure Company is a small scale outfit and they take care of you well. Unlike some other large scale operators they provide personal service and genuinely seem to care that you have a great time. And you get all of that at 30-40% discount compared to other agencies that offer similar itinerary. Overall highly recommended.
We did a day tour out of Hanoi, that was essentially a private tour. Joe normally does mountain biking around Sapa and extended trips down the Ho Chi Minh trail. The bikes were top of the range Canondale MTB's with full suspension and were almost brand new. When our 12 year old son saw these being unloaded his eyes were popping and we knew we were on a winner. Joe was a great guide, moving at our pace and taking regular breaks for drinks. The minibus was always close by with an icebox full of drinks and snacks. This was a great day out in the villages about 60 km from Hanoi. The riding was easy (but pretty hot) over flat trails and quiet roads. We stopped in one village and were mobbed by primary school chidren who seemed excited to see us, or we were the best laugh of the day. Joe runs a really professional outfit and we felt comfortable and confident with him the whole day.
My husband and I experienced this tour in May 2012. It took us from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City mainly along the inland Ho Chi Minh Trail. Usually, these tours are organised for larger groups, but although there weren't other customers, the company agreed to do it just for the two of us. Basically, we had to cycle from one village or city to another on quite long stages (more than 100 km). We weren't up to this, however, since the heat of May made it quite difficult to cycle past noon. So we tok the bikes in the morning and finished each day's trip in the comfortable air-con van. The company provided us with a van and its driver, (plus an English-speaking guide for the first Northern half of the trip to help us communicate with local people; down South, English and French are commonly spoken). Thus we had continuous assistance, since the van was always in a range of 10 km from us: the driver would indicate us the right way at crossroads, fill up our water bottles with complimentary mineral water, prepare refreshments every 90mn with fresh and dried fruit and wet towels. They also looked after the maintenance of the bikes - which were very good machines, by the way.On top of this, smiles and encouraging words, and extreme kindness. Our route took us through areas which are not commonly visited by tourists; indeed, we met very few Westerners before Hue. Instead, we encountered many local people: farmers back from their fields, women spreading rice on the roadside to make it dry, schoolchildren, young and old people on motorbikes. All very local and so friendly! The landscapes were stunning too; very different from one day to the next, with the greenest rice paddies in the world, complete with workers in conical hats and their buffaloes; colorful villages; steep mountains; pristine beaches; beautiful pagodas and imperial palaces; delightful old towns and impressive new cities. We were accommodated at local hotels. The first ones in the northern part of the trip, were basic but very comfortable places, with large rooms and ensuite bathrooms and air-conditioning. From Phong Nha on, and in Hanoi, all our hotels were 3- and 4-star places, on a par with what tourists expect to find in any city, anywhere in the world. Food in Vietnam is just incredible: available anywhere, and especially enjoyable in those little street-side joints; cooked on the spot, you can be sure it's fresh; and the choice is endless. Vietnamese cuisine is very healthy, using little fats and sugars; just what we needed to be well fueled but not too full for our biking days. On top of this, it is utterly inexpensive. All the people who looked after us were very reliable: never late, always able to communicate using a third person if they could not speak french or English; very helpful without being intrusive. Just perfect. Our tour included a junk excursion in Halong Bay and a flight from Nha Trang to Saigon. Everything wad perfectly organised by Mr Joe in Hanoi, who was always available for help or information, and who made sure to keep in touch with us to check if everything was fine. Well, everything WAS fine, so much so that we want to go to Vietnam again in February 2013, to complete another cycling trip in a different region. Maybe the Mekong Delta, or further on, to Thailand. We can't wait to discover the itineraries Mr Joe will send us. My husband and I often choose to travel by bike: we experienced this in California, New Zealand and Tasmania and we can compare the services provided by the companies who sold us those tours. We have always been very pleased with what we got, but I must say this tour in Vietnam has exceeded all our expectations. It is really the best cycling tour we've had so far?So, I warmly recommend anyone who likes cycling, even moderately so, to try one of the many tours offered by Marco Polo Company. Cycling is a great way to discover a country at a tranquil pace, allowing one to interact more closely with local people. You'll find a very professional organisation, a very wide range of options, and unbeatable prices.
