Our countryside tour of Hanoi was such a refreshing getaway! Riding through rice fields in a vintage army jeep, smelling the rice in the air, and seeing local plantations and daily life made for such a memorable experience. We loved visiting the lotus farm and drinking fresh tea grown right there. You could really taste the lotus flower and the green leaves were so fresh they were still moist! Our guide, Tran, was energetic and genuinely excited to share her knowledge. But the highlight was definitely the lunch at the end. It was bountiful, delicious, and lovingly prepared by the sweetest Vietnamese grandma. It felt like receiving a warm hug! 10/10

Itinerary
Option 1: Co Loa Ancient Citadel village
Venturing into the hidden back alleys of Hanoi’s outskirts, we immerse ourselves in the authentic side of the city that tourists rarely get to see. This is a chance to experience the real Hanoi, away from the beaten path and typical tourist attractions. We get a glimpse into the everyday lives of local people, witnessing the rural villages, farmers toiling in the fields, and the presence of livestock. The stark contrast to city life is truly eye-opening.
Our main destination for the day is the Co Loa ancient citadel. This historic site dates back to 280 BC and offers a captivating insight into Vietnamese culture, history, and mythology through its well-preserved architecture. In addition, we delve deep into the traditional way of life in rural Hanoi, with activities such as wet rice farming, exploring local markets, and witnessing the production of handicrafts. Co Loa village is like a living museum, encapsulating the essence of Vietnamese culture and daily life.
We conclude our incredible day with a home-hosted meal, lovingly prepared by a local family. Here, we indulge in authentic Vietnamese cuisine, forging a meaningful connection with the local culture.
Option 2: Bat Trang Ceramic Village:
Our destination is the famous Bat Trang ceramic village, which is the largest village of its kind in Vietnam and has a long history that dates back thousands of years. Get ready to be amazed by the immersion in ancient art and heritage, navigating the tiny ancient alleyways, and delving into the Vietnamese culture’s deep-rooted history. Learn about the current daily life of the village’s handicrafts industry by taking part in a ceramic class with the local craft-man.
At the end or the beginning of the tour, depending on the morning or afternoon schedule, you’ll enjoy an authentic, organic, and healthy Hanoi food with drinks. Join us on a journey to experience Hanoi’s countryside’s real-life by taking our Hanoi Countryside Jeep Tour and immerse yourself in the local daily life.

This experience was amazing, a highlight of our honeymoon! My husband and I were so looked after by May. He was so friendly, chatty, and fun to spend time with. We wish we got so spend more time with him! Getting out of Hanoi and seeing the countryside was so much fun, and the home cooked meal we had was such a treat, the owners were so lovely and generous. Would highly recommend this experience to anyone who wants to get out of the centre of Hanoi and see the beauty of Hanoi’s countryside!
Amazing experience would highly recommend for a great local experience. Our guide Oggy and driver Tiger made for such a fun informative day out. Lovely food with a local family too! Would recommend to anyone visiting Hanoi!
Great experience. We even met and entered the home of a resident of the pottery village and experienced a traditional Vietnamese home and local hospitality. You don't get that in any tour. Our tour guide Jenna has deep ties with the community. I recommend this tour.
Great tour would recommend to all
We had a great time on tour with Tuna. Was great to learn about the countryside and the food was delicious at the end. Great morning out!
Taken to a hidden gem in the heart of Hanoi We would have missed that Wonderful experience if it hadn't been for Hanoi back street tours Thankyou so much
Lots of fun. Guide was very friendly and informative.
Great way to spend our last day in Hanoi. Our family had a great time doing the Ceramic village tour with Tuna.
We had the best day with Tuna and the driver Te in the ceramics village outside Hanoi. He was very informative, friendly and very knowledgeable.
Our guide tuna was the best we had one of our best experiences in vietnam, highly recommend. Our driver was also great and super nice.
Tuna and snow were full of interesting facts, smiles and jokes. It was a really great way to spend an afternoon out of the hustle in Hanoi.
Tuna was our guide today and all I can say is wow! He was truly the most attentive and informative guide I’ve ever had in Vietnam and so incredibly helpful with our toddler. Everyone needs to take this tour and see rural Hanoi. It truly shows you the country side and gorgeous scenery. The food was honestly 5 star and I would recommend Tuna and this tour to everyone including people with toddlers!
We had an enjoyable and interesting day out with John. It was good to see agriculture up close and visit Bat Trang ceramic village. Lunch was excellent!
We had a lovely morning with John as our guide. Hanoi traffic was insane as usual but negotiated expertly by our driver. Visited farming area, so close to the city with a completely different vibe. Had a go at making our own ceramic pot, with different levels of success! Lunch at a quirky restaurant tasting the various street foods of Hanoi. Delicious. A great morning.
The guide was really sweet and nice to us! We really loved the tour on this day. We had a beautiful day and tried really good food at hidden gem, the places, train street was amazing, so thankful for the experience.
Doggie and Mr Ten were great. Very knowledge with Oggie having great English. The Lunch at Grandma's house was amazing. A real highlight of our trip so far. Great to get out into the countryside to see rice fields and food growing right on the boundaries of Hanoi. No hard sell visit at the end either
The whole family loved this tour. Very informative with expert local knowledge. Restaurant was also great
We had the most amazing day, filled with delicious food, lots of culture, great fun, hands on experiences and our highlight was a beautiful local couple who welcomed us into their home and shared a glimpse into their lives. This was all Thankyou to vivutravel and especially our guide Jenna and our driver Cung, who made our day extra special. Such great, friendly and knowledgeable people, we are truly grateful to you both.
We were very priviledged to be the first to try the newest tour option from Hanoi Backstreet Tours - Long Coc - (bringing Vietnamese Roosters to the World 😁). Tommy, Maria and their team have been VERY busy creating something incredibly special in the heart of the tea growing region approximately 2 hours from Hanoi. We had the most memorable day that included a delicious lunch and a sneak peak at the amazing lodge and chalets being built from recycled materials - nearly complete and ready for overnight visitors. Night time would be absolutely stunning here I promise you! After lunch we were taken by motorbike around the area to view the tea and rice fields, enjoying a cold drink at the highest point to take in the mind blowing views. We finished with a visit to a small local tea producer to see how they dry, process and package the tea. Soon the option to overnight at the lodge will be available which we would 100% recommend - it truly is a magical spot in the midst of the real Vietnamese countryside and has to be seen to be believed! If you are looking for a truly unique and special tour away from the crowds while you are in Hanoi, this is it. You will be guaranteed to take away incredible memories from this beautiful region. Heartfelt thanks to Tommy, Maria, Summer, Vincent and all the Hanoi Backstreet Tours team for our amazing day as VIPs of the bosses! We loved and appreciated every minute 😍
Summer was very patient with oldies. We made a pottery mug. We love every minute of the tour and tasted the fish ice cream. Uncle Tan was such a nice driver and felt very safe all day.
My wife and I had a wonderful tour with “ John” this morning. Being low season we ended up being the only couple on this tour. We did the early morning tour and it was incredible to find such a farming and village feel atmosphere so close to the hustle and bustle of the Old Quarter, Na Noi. It was a very relaxed but informative tour which we loved. Loved being able to talk to John about any subject and also to enjoy a laugh together One tip, it you sensibly do the morning tour in Summer, have a very light breakfast as we had lunch at 10.30 ish and it was a plentiful lunch indeed. Great atmosphere travelling in the old jeep and feeling so close ( literally) to the locals on their motorbikes😂 Thank you John for looking after us.
We had a great time on our tour with Doanh and getting to try to make our own clay piece in Bat Trang!
Tour is as described...the jeep (and driver) are a neat way to experience Hanoi (on the way out of town) and the countryside around it. Kai was a fantastic guide who we enjoyed chatting with...the family who served us our delicious lunch were all very friendly and welcoming (super smart kids!). Wonderful experience!
Mason and Mah were AMAZING tour guides. We had the best time exploring Hanoi. We recommend to everybody.
Mason and Mah were amazing! Really enjoyed getting to explore the city with locals. They were the best!
The tour was great and the tour guide - Mason was greater!
A great trip to escape Hanoi. John was an excellent guide, great English and very informative. It was fun to be in the jeep and travel through the countryside and try our hand at ceramics when we visited a local village. Highly recommend.
I had a fantastic tour of Hanoi with Louis! He was incredibly knowledgeable about history, temples, and landmarks, and made the whole experience enjoyable and engaging. He was friendly, professional, and very enthusiastic about sharing his city's story.
Johnny and Six were great. 👍 Had a nice afternoon learning about farm life and then pottery. Pottery was fun for family
Baki & Quang were great company, curious, informative, chill and looked after us very well. They organised an authentic meal made by local a family who we enjoyed talking to. As a special treat we even watched part of the match where the Socceroos beat Turkey with grandma (who cooked the lunch). Fun day.
An informative cultural experience by John. We loved his passion for his country and history which he shared with us throughout the experience. John is what makes the experience so much fun. This visit to a community garden isn’t really a farm experience considering we live in New Zealand but we loved the visit to the Temple (remember to cover your shoulders). The cafe was extra special and we would just do the trip to visit this place again.
Very good experience to get a taste of everything if Vietnam especially if Hanoi is your first spot. Danny and Tuna helped us navigate the village!
Was very fun, Tuna was very informative and passionate about this tour. Our driver Danny was very safe and got us to our destinations safely. Couldn’t recommend Tuna and Danny enough!
Tuna was very knowledgeable and knew all the good spots to show us! Overall very good day! Danny was our driver and did very well also
Tuna was very kind and very informative. The ceramic factory and workshop was very fun. The lunch was amazing and very good food! Danny was a great driver as well.
Had an exceptional experience with San May on the “A Glimpse Off the Beaten Path” Sapa Jeep Tour. She was engaging, caring, knowledgeable, and made every moment feel authentic and special. From breathtaking mountain views and hidden village relics to local farms and cultural immersion, the journey was unforgettable. Ending the day with a traditional herbal bath deep in the mountains was the perfect touch. If you truly want to experience the heart and soul of Sapa beyond the tourist trail, I highly recommend this tour and guide.
It was great to get outside of the city center and see a different side of Hanoi. Bee was a great guide - she is very nice and shared a lot of stories and interesting things about Vietnamese culture. It felt like talking with a friend. Driving in the jeep is an exciting experience too, but not for the faint hearted.
Our guide, Louis, was very funny, knowledgeable, and patient with us throughout the city tour. He loved his city and was so helpful to us at the post office at the end of the tour… fantastic, Louis!!
This trip was worth every penny. I certainly wouldn't have had such an amazing experience if I had participated in all the activities myself. Hotel pick-up, driver, tour guide – every aspect went smoothly. Louis was very knowledgeable and answered all my questions. Suc was an excellent driver. Hanoi traffic was very congested, but he handled it very professionally.
Had a fantastic jeep tour with Johnny and Mr C exploring the different areas of Hanoi including the instagram known Hanoi Street train, finishing with a delicious lunch at the Hidden Gem Cafe. Thanks Johnny and Mr C for an amazing morning! Highly recommend the jeep tour!
Thank you Johnny and Mr C for a fantastic day out. Johnny was very knowledgeable and we all enjoyed his stories. Mr C did a great job navigating us safely through the streets of Hanoi. Thank you. Highly recommended
Johnny is a fantastic guide, very knowledgeable proving alot of information on the Vietnamese history and culture. The food and coffee stops in the tour was delicious. Our driver Mr C navigating the streets of Hanoi like a pro.
We had the best tour hosted by Bee and Six (our driver). We knew we wanted to head out of the city and we did, visiting the ceramic village and trying our hand at pottery. Bee gave us insights into Vietnamese culture, family and way of life. We loved cruising around Hanoi in a jeep - great way to feel amongst it. Would recommend without a doubt.
We had a great time as a family and saw/experienced great places! Thanks to Tuna for this great trip!
A great trip around town with a lovely trip to the Ceramic village and the nearby rural fields. We thoroughly recommend Bee as a fun and very informative guide.
Tuna and Mr T the driver were excellent, we had such a great morning together learning the history and experiencing the culture. Lunch was a yummy bonus we would highly recommend this tour company and Tuna.
Tuna was very good and fun and informative. Lucky great driver and on the spot
