Did the private tour with my husband and it was great. I think the private tour provided more opportunities to ask lots of questions on how the past impacts the present and get a good first person perspective of how the youth of Vietnam (Gen Z) view society, religion, government, education, etc. versus older generations. No brainer if you’re new to Ha Noi or Vietnam and especially if you’re staying in the French quarter. We went in mid October and it was still so HOT at 95-100F real feel with humidity. Locals said it was unseasonably warm. Prepare accordingly.

The architecture of St Joseph Cathedral Hanoi is designed in the style of medieval Gothic Europe. The church and colonization are inseparable and the church has played an outsize role in Vietnam’s modern history. It is not only a regular place of worship activities of the Archdiocese of Hanoi, but St Joseph cathedral Hanoi is also a popular tourist destination in Hanoi, attracting a large number of tourists inside and outside to visit.
There is nothing better to learn about the history by trying the iconic "Ca phe sua da"- Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk in a hidden French villa. There are so many interesting stories to tell you.

The tower is a combination of European and Asian architecture – with gothic arches at its first two storeys combined with the hip roof of Vietnam architecture. During the French colonial period, on the top of the Turtle Tower, a version of the Statue of Liberty (1890-1896), was placed by the French. However, it was removed when the Tran Trong Kim regime gained control of the city in 1945. During the French rule, the local people would often hang Vietnam’s revolutionary flag from the tower in order to show their defiant spirit.

Tour guide Mina was excellent. Conveyed a tremendous amount of Vietnamese history. Beautiful walking area. Plus coffee and ice cream!
Mina can write a book on how much of Hanoi's history and stories she knows, especially those of the buildings and sights she took me to. I'm not a communicative person, but I felt comfortable and relaxed with her. The coffee and ice cream were all great. I even loved the part where she took me to a building with nice bathrooms mid-way. The architecture in the French quarter showcased itself beautifully. Overall a great experience. Highly recommend.
Great tour of the French quarter and surrounding areas covering some history, some architecture, some info about contemporary Hanoi life. We asked lots of questions and all were answered. If you’re a woman make sure to take something to cover your shoulders for the church.
Great introduction to Hanoi's French Quarter. Delicious coffee and ice cream as well as interesting stories about the city's history. Highly recommend.
A very good walking tour with Mina who had an excellent knowledge of the area and who was very friendly. I would suggest doing these kind of tours at the beginning of your trip. The only thing that I strongly disliked was this Australian family and their teenage son who kept on making rude comments about the French. Being French myself I find it quite unpleasant. I was there to learn and it did spoil my experience. I would have preferred not being with teenagers.
We had an amazing tour guide in Mina as she was knowledgeable and friendly. There were 6 of us and a great group. First up coffee in a quaint french built building with a lot of history then the church and Mina explained the history of the church and we had the opportunity to enter and walk around inside. Waling the streets of the French Quarter was enjoyable with the interesting stories Mina shared with us. We stopped for yummy ice cream and ended the tour feeling that this was one of the most enjoyable walking tours we have been on
Mina was amazing. Friendly - informative and professional. Our first stop was a coffee shop where she explained the history of Vietnam occupation succinctly and easily understood over coffee. Mina spike perfect english and was very helpful and answered all our questions. It was a great group size - with 3 Americans and lady from the middle east living in Thailand and my husband and I from Australia. I would highly recommend this tour.
Thea was full of knowledge and entertaining. We really enjoyed the tour and would recommend to anyone.
Our guide Thea was great and knowledgeable , would recommend to join. Thank you. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍☕️🍦
Mina is very friendly with English speaking which makes the whole experience really smooth. The meet up coffee place is a great spot with decent coffee and long history. She took good care of us while crossing every roads. We definitely have a deeper understanding about Vietnamese history, culture and local’s pov after the tour. Great guide that you shouldn’t miss!
A great tour. Mina is so friendly and knowledgeable. It was interesting to see a different part of Hanoi and hear about the history. Highly recommend 👌
I only had 1 day in Hanoi and this was the perfect tour to hit all the city's highlights, learn a little about the history and culture of Vietnam as well as get some tips about food, coffee and other things to see. Mina is friendly and energetic, her tour is well planned with lots of stops but at no point did I feel rushed. She even took photos which is so useful when you are solo travelling.
Thea was an amazing guide. She knew so much that I could have just sat in a coffee shop and talked for 2 hours and still got a lot out of this tour. We walked all around the French quarter and she explained so much about the culture and history. I highly recommend this Thea and this great tour
This is a unique tour full of interesting facts and tips about Hanoi’s French Quarter and its history. Beautiful tucked away cafes that we would never have discovered otherwise. Mina gave us so much information- and was a fantastic guide I would recommend to anyone coming to Hanoi - a real ‘must’
Pinky was a great tour guide! She was up for any questions, very enthousiastic and loved to tell more about Vietnam. Throughly enjoyed the tour!
Really interesting and well paced tour. Learnt lots and benefited from Mina’s obvious passion for her country and its history.
Great tour with Mina. Really enjoyed. Informative and fun. Some quirky facts thrown in too. Mina has a lovely manner and paced the tour just right. Would highly recommend.
Less than 24 hours beforehand my tour was changed to the 9:00 am and I was told there was no one to take me at 2:00. I made it work with my schedule. *This was a walking tour* around the French Quarter. For the most part, Mina was a good guide. However, I was a bit offended when she at one point asked if I knew the sacred animals of Buddhism other than the Dragon. I said the Phoenix and she said no - even though it *is* one of the four. She said she wanted to know the "next" one, which was the Unicorn. I didn't know there was a specific order to them and I felt like I'd been made to look foolish in front of the group. She never pointed out that I'd actually named one properly. I felt disheartened after being proud of myself for spending time in the country and learning about their culture, only to feel like it wasn't appreciated. After that I didn't try to interact with her questions any further. Otherwise the tour was good and Mina provided helpful information.
Great tour with Mina. She is very friendly and has a wide knowledge of Hanoi, its history and its architecture. This tour is a must if you are interested in the history of this fascinating city.
Mina’s tour was both fun and informative. She is high energy and incredibly knowledgeable. A really comprehensive overview of Hanoi’s French quarter with a dollop of Vietnamese coffee, culture & history. Highly recommend
Mina was a fantastic tour guide. Highly knowledgeable while also making the experience fun. She is detailed oriented and provided an excellent experience.
Had a great tour with Pinky, she was very knowledgeable, enthusiastic and took care to make sure the tour tailoir the tour as much as possible according to my interests. If you’d like to learn more about the history and stories behind the Hanoi French Quarter, as well as visit a truly unique coffee along the way - than this is the tour for you.
Thank you Mina for a wonderful tour of the French Quarters, sharing us striking buildings in back alleys and providing history and context to what we saw in Hanoi!
On our first morning in Hanoi (and in Vietnam), we enjoyed a terrific morning tour of the French Quarter with Mina. Our morning started in a quaint and historic café with delicious Vietnamese coffee (we chose egg coffee and a banana coffee). Over coffee, Mina began to share the history and culture of Hanoi and Vietnam. (Over the tour, we also enjoyed Vietnamese ice cream and a brief temple tea with Mina.) Our conversation and tour with Mina covered a great deal of ground, and she was terrific. We visited St. Joseph Cathedral, Hoan Kiem Lake, a community temple, and many streets and icons of the French Quarter. We discussed Vietnamese history – from the dynasties to difficult periods with French and American wars. Give a listen to Joan Baez “Where Are You Now, My Son?” for good context to one important stop. We would highly recommend this tour, Mina, and the One Trip with Local team for Hanoi tours!
Loved this tour!!! So personable and interesting. We got to see the French quarters through a locals eyes and taste the best coffee and ice cream in the city.
We had the great pleasure of being guided through the French Quarter in Hanoi by Kien Pham, and we cannot recommend him highly enough. It was just my wife and me on the tour, and Kien made the entire experience both personal and deeply engaging. Kien has a remarkable ability to bring history to life. His knowledge of Vietnam’s past—especially the French colonial period—was outstanding, and he presented it with clarity, passion, and nuance. He gave context to the architecture, culture, and political history of Hanoi in a way that was both accessible and thought-provoking. What made the tour truly special was how tailored and conversational it felt. Kien was attentive to our interests, answered all our questions in depth, and made sure we saw parts of the French Quarter that we might have otherwise overlooked. His English was excellent, and his storytelling skills made the history of Hanoi resonate on a personal level. If you are interested in learning more about Vietnam’s complex past while walking through one of Hanoi’s most charming districts, we highly recommend booking a tour with Kien Pham. It was one of the highlights of our trip.

Lovely stroll through the French quarter. Mina was very knowledgeable and friendly. Coffee and ice cream were great.
Great tour with Lily who took us to the local places and very informative about the area we had a great time
Thanks Mina, we had a great time! Thoroughly recommend a few meandering through hanoi, learning about some history and drinking great coffee
Dung (Zung) was an excellent host and well-read in Vietnam's history. The time spent was worthy and enjoyable while taking in the depth of Vietnam through the ages.
I am very glad we booked this tour. Mina was an excellent guide, charismatic and informative. The pace of the tour is great for admiring the area without getting too tired from all the walking. This is a great way to learn more about the city's history (and Vietnam as a whole) from a local, with a few goodies included.
Nice tour to learn about the history of the city and Vietnam. Our guide Mina was very nice and passionate, meet up was also smooth as they will contact you via WhatsApp the day before with more details, which was nice.
Hanoi's French Quarter is wonderful. A rich history, so well maintained. And our guide, Mina, did a fantastic job bringing it to life with her knowledge and energy. The lemon coffee and coconut coffee we got to enjoy were a lovely treat, and absolutely out of this world!
The coffee and ice cream were great and we got a nice tour of the French quarter of Hanoi. Our guide provided lots of good information about that area.
Fun and informative tour with Mina! We met Mina in front of the church and went to a nearby coffee shop to try Vietnamese coffee. Mina was very informative about the French Quarter and history of Hanoi. This is not your normal bus tour of Hanoi. We walked and talked.
It.was very nice the knowledge and the very good english of the guide. We have passed some places but we would have never gone in there.
A nice leisurely stroll around the French Quarter with our very knowledgeable guide, Mina. Lots of interesting stories and a must do while in Hanoi.
Mina was the best guide I've had in a long time. Knowledgeable and fun and organised and good to chat with all at once. Strongly recommend this tour.
Mina was a wonderful guide! I had a fantastic morning with her learning about Vietnam’s coffee culture, history and the architecture of the Old Quarter. I highly recommend this tour if you enjoy coffee and want to learn about the different influences that have shaped Vietnam's culture!
Mina is a cheerful and eloquent guide with great knowledge and good stories. Interesting and insightful. Recommend it!
Had a great tour with Mina. She was very knowledgeable, candid and did a great job of weaving a narrative about the architecture, political history and changes in Vietnam. Would highly recommend.
I really enjoyed my tour with Mina. Her English was fantastic and she shared her extensive knowledge of coffee and Vietnamese history with an infectious enthusiasm. My basic knowledge both was limited and I felt she gauged this well so as not to overwhelm us with too much detail. The tour was topped off with a lovely coffee and tasty ice cream! 10/10 recommend.
Our host Mina, was splendid in sharing the history of Vietnam while sprinkling her own personal stories. She’s fantastic as a guide, keeping us all engaged and recommending really yummy coffee and coconut milk ice cream. I tried the yogurt coffee for my sensitive tummy while my friends tried the coconut coffee and lime coffee!:) I would recommend this tour to anyone interested in having a fuller experience of Hanoi and how they are such resilient people.
This was a great first tour to do in Hanoi. We learned a lot and had great coffee along the way. Mina was a great guide and shared a lot of interesting facts with us. Would recommend this!
We started our tour with a delicious egg-coffee and Mina, our guide, gave us a lot of background information about the café and coffee bean cultivation in Vietnam. After this boost we were ready to explore the French Quarter on foot. Mina has many stories to tell with a good sense of humour and a cheerful manner. I learned about history, architecture and tried two Vietnamese specialities - I really appreciated the tour:)
The Coffee history & French quarter tour was amazing! Fast response on the booking side. Our tour guide (Mina) was very friendly and has a very good English. I and my friends had an impressive experience. Very recommended!!
Being with Dung and Quon, my two wonderful and knowledgeable guides. I'm a former French teacher and was interested in exploring French colonial influences past and present. I gained insights that I would not have otherwise discovered on my own. One thing I pointed out to them is how the Vietnamese write their numerals is in the French manner with 1s that look like 7s and 9s that look like the letter "g". Also 7s have the crossbar.
Great walking tour of the French quarter with interesting stories, great ice cream and the most amazing coffee. Thanks Mina
