Writing Our Honest Review of the Dolphin Cruise – A Very Disappointing Experience Unfortunately, our experience on the Dolphin Cruise fell well below our expectations. While there were a few positives, the overall impression was that the priority was to get as many people as possible onto the boat, rather than ensuring guests had an enjoyable, comfortable and well-organised experience. Transfers and Arrival The transfer to the boat was comfortable enough, considering it was a two-to-three-hour journey with a scheduled stop along the way. However, due to the number of people on the minibus and my wife and I being the last passengers collected, there were no two seats available together. As a result, I had to sit at the front next to the driver while my wife sat at the back. On arrival, before leaving the minibus, we were handed a ticket and wristband. Once we boarded the boat, we were met by a hostess who offered no greeting and simply stared at us while waiting for our tickets. I appreciate that there may be a language barrier, but a smile, some eye contact or a simple gesture of welcome would have made a difference. We were then told to follow her to our table. She pointed it out and walked away, leaving us to settle in without any further assistance. What made this particularly disappointing was that the cruise description and itinerary stated that guests would be greeted with a welcome drink. No drinks or refreshments were offered whatsoever, despite us having just completed a lengthy journey. Lack of Welcome and Safety Briefing On our table was an A4 sheet explaining the itinerary, including meal times and departure times for the various excursions. The information also mentioned that the crew would provide a welcome and explain the safety procedures. Unfortunately, no such introduction or safety briefing took place. For an organised excursion carrying large numbers of passengers, I would have expected a more professional welcome and a clear explanation of the safety arrangements. The Buffet – A Complete Shambles At 11:45 am, we were invited to the buffet to begin lunch. This was, without doubt, the worst part of our experience. The food itself looked lovely, and there appeared to be plenty of it. Unfortunately, the organisation of the buffet was absolutely dreadful. It felt as though the cruise operator's main priority was to fill the boat to maximum capacity, with little consideration given to how so many people would be served comfortably and efficiently. My wife and I, along with other British guests, initially tried to form an orderly queue and wait patiently for our turn. However, it quickly became chaotic, with people pushing in, forcing their way forward and grabbing the food they wanted. I even witnessed two people arguing over the last crab, despite more food continuing to be brought out. To be fair, there was no shortage of food, and the cruise operator cannot be held responsible for every individual's behaviour. However, it can certainly take responsibility for the sheer number of people being directed to the buffet at the same time and the lack of organisation. Eventually, we gave up and ate what little we could get to, hoping the crowds would ease. Unfortunately, by the time that might have happened, we were due to leave for our next excursion. We had paid for a cruise that included lunch, yet we were left feeling hungry and disappointed before the day had properly got going. The Excursions The excursion to the caves was interesting, and we were fortunate to have a genuinely lovely guide who clearly took pride in his work. He was helpful, informative and appeared to care about the experience he was providing. He was one of the genuine positives of the day. However, even this excursion was made difficult by the sheer number of people. The kayaking or bamboo boat trip was another disappointment. Whether this was due to time restrictions or the way the itinerary was organised, we had barely boarded our bamboo boat before it was time to get off again. We had chosen the bamboo boat in the hope of getting closer to the monkeys, but the sheer mass of boats and kayaks on the water made this impossible. It was incredibly disappointing, particularly when this was one of the experiences we had been looking forward to. The beach stop was equally underwhelming. It was absolutely packed with people, and there was virtually nowhere to sit and relax. Instead of enjoying a peaceful beach visit, we found ourselves surrounded by crowds. On our return, there was an opportunity involving snakes. However, after our experience at the buffet and having eaten so little, we were already thoroughly disappointed and decided not to participate. Final Thoughts I honestly struggle to believe that our experience is entirely consistent with the overwhelmingly positive reviews we have seen on TripAdvisor. I find it difficult to believe that we are the only people who have encountered these problems. Our overall impression was that the Dolphin Cruise operates as a cash-generating business, with the emphasis on getting as many people as possible onto the boat and moving them through the various activities, rather than delivering a well-organised and enjoyable experience. The food was plentiful, the cave guide was excellent, and the transfer itself was comfortable. However, these positives were overshadowed by the lack of a proper welcome, the absence of the promised refreshments and safety briefing, the chaotic buffet, the rushed boat trip and the overcrowded beach. Ultimately, we paid for what we expected to be an enjoyable day out, but instead spent much of it dealing with crowds, disorganisation and disappointment. I would not repeat this experience, nor would I recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxed and well-managed excursion. In particular, if you are claustrophobic or uncomfortable in large, tightly packed crowds, I would strongly advise you to think carefully before booking. Sadly, this was a very disappointing experience, and one we would not choose to repeat.

The cruise was great, had a really fun experience. Our guide Mr We was fun and really explained things to us patiently. The duration of the excursion is perfect, although we could have avoided the stop at the bamboo and silk factory. The food options- are great if you are a meat lover but for vegetarians or those who prefer chicken, you will starve. Maybe that bit should be taken care of since people are paying a lot, and a lot of it must be for food. The atmosphere was nice, crowds could have been lesser for a more fun experience.

We had an absolutely wonderful experience aboard the Dolphin Halong Cruise today. Every aspect—staff, service, excursions, and cuisine—was truly five-star. It’s a stunning, newly built vessel and an essential experience for anyone visiting Halong Bay.

It was truly wonderful to create such special memories and capture beautiful photos with my whole family. They even praised me for choosing so well! If I ever have the opportunity to cruise again, I’d unquestionably choose Dolphin once more—I felt completely at ease and thoroughly enjoyed every moment.

The cruise is pretty, well equipped and staff is helpful ! There is a bar lounge with sofas to relax or a pool with tables and long chairs to be in the centre of action. Visiting the Suprise Cave with a guide from the main boat was fun and interesting.
