Mei, our guide for the day was outstanding; he showed us all around the Hakone area and we got to know the public transportation well enough that we were able to negotiate it on our own the following day. Mei was very knowledgeable, friendly and we very much enjoyed spending the day with him. We covered a lot of ground, went on the rope way, and saw and learned a lot; overall we had a great day; it was one of the best days we had during our 3 week visit in Japan.

Lake Ashinoko (芦ノ湖, Ashinoko) was formed in the caldera of Mount Hakone after the volcano's last eruption 3000 years ago. Today, the lake with Mount Fuji in the background is the symbol of Hakone. The lake's shores are mostly undeveloped except for small towns in the east and north and a couple of lakeside resort hotels. The best views of the lake in combination with Mount Fuji can be enjoyed from Moto-Hakone (a few steps south from the sightseeing boat pier), from the Hakone Detached Palace Garden and from the sightseeing boats cruising the lake.
Hakone-jinja Shrine is a tranquil place of worship with a history stretching back more than 12 centuries. Its buildings have been destroyed by fire and rebuilt several times, yet the shrine and surrounding forest retain an atmosphere of both peace and mystery.
An active volcano that power the many nearaby hot spings. Famous for black boiled eggs.
The Hakone Museum of Art (箱根美術館, Hakone Bijutsukan), located in Gora, was founded by Okada Mokichi in 1952. Its sister museum, the MOA Museum of Art was later built in Atami City on the Izu Peninsula. The museum displays mainly Japanese ceramics from prehistoric times through the Edo Period (1600-1868). These include a number of large earthenware and ceramic vessels such as a haniwa burial statue classified as an Important Cultural Property. Admission 900 yen (700 yen with the Hakone Free Pass)
A field of Pampas grass that is most beautiful in the autumn.
The Hakone Ropeway (箱根ロ-プウエイ) is part of the Hakone Round Course, a popular way to visit Hakone. It connects Sounzan Station (at the terminus of the Hakone Tozan Cablecar) with Togendai Station (at the shore of Lake Ashinoko) and stops at Owakudani and Ubako stations on the way. The ropeway is fully covered by the Hakone Free Pass. The ropeway's gondolas depart every minute and fit around ten people each. Traveling the full length of the ropeway takes around 30 minutes. Along the journey, passengers can enjoy views of the active, sulfuric hot spring sources of the Owakudani Valley between Sounzan and Owakudani and of Lake Ashinoko and Mount Fuji between Owakudani and Togendai if visibility allows. A transfer of gondolas is necessary at Owakudani, but no transfer is needed at Ubako. Admission 1480 yen (one way), covered by the Hakone Free Pass
Choanji Temple (長安寺, Chōanji) is a temple of the Soto school of Zen Buddhism in the Sengokuhara area of Hakone. Established in 1356 in a quiet area at the base of a hill, the atmospheric temple has a small network of pleasant walking trails which wind through its wooded grounds and cemetery. What lends Choanji its particular charm, however, are the over two hundred statues of rakan (disciples of Buddha) scattered around the temple grounds. The statues began appearing in the 1980s and have been accruing ever since. Each statue has a unique face and shape, some contemplative and serious, others casual and humorous, and many show a modern edge in their artistic style and expressiveness compared to other collections of rakan statues. In autumn, the temple grounds are also one of Hakone's nicer spots to enjoy the autumn colors. The many color-changing trees here usually reach their peak color around mid November.
The Hakone Open-Air Museum is the first open-air art museum in Japan, built in Hakone with the aim of harmonizing nature and art. Art works are placed everywhere on the vast site of about 70,000 square meters, surrounded by beautiful trees, grass, and moutains. It can be enjoyed by a wide range of ages, from families with children to adults traveling alone.
The Hakone Botanical Garden of Wetlands (箱根湿生花園, Hakone Shisseikaen) is a botanical garden in the highlands of Fuji Hakone Izu National Park. The park was founded in 1976 as a place to preserve and exhibit over 1700 varieties of marsh and alpine plants native to Japan. The garden offers a network of boardwalk paths through different types of marshland where you can learn about the plants that populate the wetlands. Information signs are in English and Japanese. The garden is popular during June when its Nikko Kisuge (daylily) are in full bloom, however it is closed during the winter months. Admission 700 yen (600 yen with the Hakone Free Pass)
The Okada Museum of Art (岡田美術館, Okada Bijutsukan) is a privately-owned museum showcasing a wide collection of art pieces dating from antiquity to the modern era. Opened in 2013, the museum features a large array of East Asian ceramics, sculptures and paintings, all housed in a very spacious, modern facility surrounded by expansive grounds that feature a Japanese garden, a teahouse and a cafe with hot spring foot bath. The heart of the museum's collection lies in its huge collection of Chinese and Japanese ceramics and sculptures, which dominates the first two floors, including ancient Chinese bronzes, Tang and Ming porcelain, early Japanese pottery and more. The upper floors focus on Japanese art, with a variety of art forms and time periods represented. Most items on display are labeled with basic information in English, Chinese, Korean and Japanese. When entering, be aware that the museum's security measures are rather strict, requiring guests to store phones, cameras, bags and even stationary in free lockers at the front. Admission 2800 yen (museum and footbath; 200 yen off with the Hakone Free Pass) 300 yen (garden) 500 yen (footbath only)
The Hakone Glass no Mori (箱根ガラスの森) features Italian styled buildings housing a museum and shops. Outside is a large strolling garden surrounding a canal like pond. The garden has a number of large glass sculptures laid about it, as well as a cafe with an open terrace at one end where live canzoni (Italian ballads) performances are held. The Glass no Mori's Venetian Glass Museum houses a collection of over 100 pieces of Venetian glassware. It displays both modern and classical works in all forms including vases, goblets, lamps and sculptures. The Hakone Glass no Mori is run by the Ukai Group, an operator of themed high class restaurants, which also owns the Kawaguchiko Music Forest at Kawaguchiko in the Fuji Five Lakes region. Admission 1500 yen (1400 yen with the Hakone Free Pass)
The POLA group, a skin care and beauty products company, opened the POLA Museum of Art (ポーラ美術館, Pōla Bijutsukan) in 2002 in order to display the extensive private art collection of the company's late owner, Suzuki Tsuneshi. The museum was built amid a forest of 300 year old beech trees, and although constructed of concrete and glass, it is designed so as not to disrupt the natural environment that surrounds it. To achieve this, the majority of the building is located underground. The museum features modern and contemporary paintings, sculptures, ceramics and glassware by mostly Japanese and European artists. In addition to temporary exhibits, the museum displays rotating exhibits drawn from its permanent collection which include works by artists such as Cezanne, Monet, Picasso and Renoir. Admission 1800 yen (1600 yen with the Hakone Free Pass)
Gora Park (強羅公園, Gōra Kōen) is a western style landscape park located on the steep slope above Gora Station. It is a relaxing place to unwind and enjoy the scenery and views of Hakone. Gora Park is primarily a French styled landscape park featuring a large fountain and a rose garden. The park also has two greenhouses, one housing a tropical botanical garden while the other contains a flower garden. Additionally, there is a restaurant overlooking the main fountain, as well as the Hakuun-do Chaen teahouse. In the Crafthouse visitors can take part in craft activities such as glass blowing, glass etching, pottery and dried flower arrangement. Activities range in cost from 1000 to 5000 yen and take from 30 minutes to an hour to complete. Admission 550 yen (free with the Hakone Free Pass)
The Narukawa Museum of Art (成川美術館, Narukawa Bijutsukan) is a contemporary art museum dedicated to a style of painting known as nihonga. Literally meaning "Japanese-style painting", nihonga are paintings that adhere to traditional Japanese artistic conventions, techniques, tools and materials. The label was originally meant to simply distinguish the art from Western-style paintings, but artists have since expanded the scope of nihonga to also include Western techniques. Besides the art collection, the museum features an impressive panorama lounge and cafe with large windows overlooking Lake Ashinoko. On a clear day, it affords one of the best views of Mount Fuji, the lake and the floating torii gate of Hakone Shrine. Admission 1300 yen (1100 yen with Hakone Free Pass or online coupon)
Centuries old dollhouses from around the world can be seen in this quiant collection.
The Owakudani Nature Study Path is a special walking trail through an active volcanic area. It offers close-up views of Hakone’s geothermal activity. Advance reservation is required and the entrance fee is 800 yen.

We had a fantastic day! Ryosuke contacted is in advance to hear what we‘d like to See and do and matched his suggestions perfectly! We spend a lovely day exploring with the friendly, knowledgeable, and kind young man. We feel lucky to have him as our Guide!
Had an amazing day with Hiro. He gave us very comprehensive tour of Hakone. Did great explanation of history and explained a lot about culture of Japan. Very comprehensive.
It was a great overview of different sites in Hakone. Our guide Yumiko-san took us to a local restaurant for lunch that had really good authentic feel. The other sites also were not too touristy and was very relaxing. I love that we got to experience a tea ceremony in Gora Park one last time before leaving Japan. It was a long day but really maximized the sightseeing.
Great! He is very friendly. You can feel safe and just enyoj a beautiful nature
A big thank you to Hiro for making our tour so enjoyable He is a very pleasant and informative guide and we would highly recommend him if you are considering a tour in Hakone

Ryuta was an excellent guide who was very knowledgeable. An excellent tour if you have limited time in Hakone and can also be customised as per your requirements and interests. Would recommend to anyone staying in Hakone
Really great tour. Got to see the sights without the hassle of losing time and constantly getting lost. Our guide was wonderful
Mr Akey showed me an amazing time in Hakone. He planned out a very detailed itinerary based completely on my interests. The hot spring onsen was just what I needed to relax after long travel and a day of walking around the day before. I was hesitant to do the ropeway due to my fear of heights, but am so glad I went. The views were absolutely breathtaking, and I was lucky enough to have a clear enough day to get some incredible views of Mt Fuji. Highly recommend.
Our guide was Dragon (Ryuta-San), and he was absolutely wonderful! He is so knowledgeable and experienced. We had wet weather and he really took into consideration the weather and the most strategic ways to enjoy Hakone with the crowds and traffic. He came prepared with maps, brochures, current weather forecasts, and took the time to explain the history and culture of the places we visited. He also chose the best place for lunch. And we ate the black eggs from Owakudani at midnight to live long lives (🙏). We highly recommend Dragon as a tour guide. He is the best.! We look forward to visiting Japan again and hope to have Dragon as our tour guide again. Thank you, Dragon-San!
Great guide, Yoshi! He customized our day in Hakone and lunch was also great. Very experienced guide.
Our guide, Kappa-san, modified the typical Hakone tour to accommodate our interests, and is very helpful and knowledgeable. Since the day was very hot (95°F / 35°C) we favored activities that were more shaded or cool, including a walk on a cedar-lined section of the old Tokaido path.
We had a fantastic full-day tour of Hakone with our guide, Hiro—a kind and knowledgeable grandfather who kept us on track throughout a jam-packed day. He made sure we experienced the very best of Hakone, from stunning views to cultural highlights, all while keeping the pace smooth and enjoyable. But be prepared to walk a lot! Hiro was especially wonderful with kids—patient, friendly, and engaging, which made the day even more memorable for our family. Highly recommend Hiro to anyone looking to get the most out of their visit to Hakone!
We had a great day with Atsushi! He knew how to time the day perfectly and shared tons of knowledge along the way! He’s clearly a very educated man and his explanations drew our attention!
Fumiko was very organized and planned a great day that we had discussed ahead of time , but was flexible to accommodate changes the day of. She spoke great English and shared lots of Japanese history along the well. We would use her again to help us in the future.
Taka was very good at helping to navigate all the big queues and took us to some great places away from the crowds. It was lovey to not to have to worry as you knew that you would be taken care of. Our kids loved the open air museum and the glass engraving.
This was such an interesting tour ! We really wanted to see the volcano and do our guide Taka made sure to get us there. He took into consideration what we wanted and was so knowledgeable about all the places we went. He got us into all these cool places because he was the chairmen of the tour guide association. We had such a great time.
Hiro-San was a wonderful guide! He was very flexible and revised our plans many times to accommodate the bad weather and ensure we had a great experience. He helped us plan our departure the next day. He was very fun and shared great information.
Yoshi was a fabulous guide. I appreciate that he answered our may questions about culture and history and social norms. He also helped us get to a pharmacy and very kindly picked us up and dropped us off. Hakone was a treat with his expert guidance!

He works with you on your desired schedule and give good guidance on what to prepare for the trip. He is very knowledgeable of the Japanese history and culture, He brings you to interesting places and showed you the best of your visit. Mr Taka speaks excellent English. I highly recommended Mr. Takaoshiyama and Japan Guide Agency for guided tours in Japan
Trip was excellent. The guide was very helpful, explained everything very clearly. Took us to all the places as the itinerary was done. Reached on time to all the places. Yoshi was amazing guide.
Mori-san was a wonderful guide who made our last two days in Japan memorable. We hiked in Hakone and also visited local attractions. At each point Mori-san had prepared interesting explanations. We had some rainy weather to deal with but Mori-san always had a Plan B. We recommend him highly!
We had a great day with Sam touring the Hakone Open Air Museum, the Venetian Glass Museum, and Lake Ashi. It was overcast so we did not get to see Mt. Fuji but the sail on the lake was a lovely experience. Sam was tireless in making all the travel arrangements and guiding us around. We were able to enjoy each location without any time pressure or schedule. He was great company as we spent a lovely day in a beautiful area.
My family and I had the most amazing experience with Hide at our Hakone 8 hour private tour. The adventure began by taking the cable carts at Gora leading us to the gondola to see the beautiful greenery of Hakone mountains and then the contrast of the volcanic side. Prior to our departure at the gondola, my two daughters were able to send off postcards from one of the gift shops. Once we arrived at the volcanic side, Hide took us to taste the Hakone black eggs which supposedly give a person seven more years of life. We enjoyed this very much! After learning the chemistry of these volcanic eggs, we then headed towards Lake Aishi on the pirate boat. It was a beautiful day where we got to go up on the deck to see the scenic views of the lake and green backdrop. What we appreciated most with Hide is his attention for detail. He was very accommodating and flexible if we wanted to stop, slow the pace, and most importantly helped my mother in law get a table at a coffee shop while the rest of my family went on a small walk up to the temple. Additionally, he took us to the most delicious restaurant that served such good food and even experienced grating fresh wasabi. We ended the tour by tasting the best matcha shaved ice at the 400 year old tea house. The final tour ended with a peaceful cable cart train ride up while viewing the beautiful greenery of Hakone mountains. It felt as if we were part of nature. Heidi was so polite, friendly, and hospitable. A memory that will last forever. Thank you Hide!
Do not miss Hakone! An easy trip from Tokyo on the the high speed romance car will take you to this beautiful mountain escape where you can experience nature, amazing views, volcanos, temples and gardens away from the city. We had a wonderful day exploring the area with our excellent guide, Yoshi. We took the train from Tokyo the day before our tour and spent time on our own exploring the Hakone Outdoor Museum (do not miss this!) and enjoying the Onsen and dinner at our Ryokan. Yoshi picked us up the next morning with a plan for the perfect day for me and my two adult daughters. The tour took us to the area's popular spots and also a few unique spots that we would not have discovered on our own. We experienced a traditional tea ceremony, ate black eggs, sailed on the pirate ship on lake Ashi, took the ropeway, saw Mt. Fuju, learned about wood crafts, visited amazing gardens and so much more! Yoshi was very knowledgeable about Japan, its history and traditions. He kept the tour well paced and organized in such a way that we were able to see all the sites yet also enjoy some quiet moments, like lunch at a small, out of the way Sushi restaurant which was truly local and served the freshest fish and best sushi of our trip. I feel like we learned and understood so much more about Hakone and Japan by having Yoshi as our guide. He was thoughtful and kind and a great photographer as well. We communicated before the trip and he did a great job planning the perfect day for me and my daughters. I highly recommend you make the time to visit Hakone (stay at least one night) and book Yoshi as your guide for the day.
I would like to say that our guide RYUTA Arita was the reason for our rating of 5. He was very knowledgeable and informative about the points of interest and very pleasant. He customized our tour based on our points of interest and most importantly he made sure that we went to the best view points for Mount Fuji. We were fortunate for having a very clear day in July during the rainy season. Also due the very high temperatures 94 degrees he planned our trip to be in the shaded & coolest areas during the hottest times. I would definitely recommend this tour and especially if you could request RYUTA Arita as your guide. Aloha
Seky was an amazing guide for us. He did a fantastic job customizing and accommodating our group of 8. He went out of his way to make sure everything was timed and was accommodating to our restaurant request for lunch as well. We had a great time and would recommend Seky to anyone.
Take was an amazing tour guide. We saw the very best Hakone had to offer. He knew every awesome spot, and the best ways to get from place to place. He shared amazing history and stories about the area.
We had an all day tour to Hakone via train/gondola/bus/walking with private guide Michio. He was patient and flexible and took us exactly where we wanted to go (plus to and from our Tokyo hotel).
It was an amazing day, we really liked and enjoyed the whole day in Nara. The sake tasting in the end was definitively a high moment of the day.
Hiroe Murayama is the best tour guide, very patient and explains Everything to us. She took US only to the best spot and was very generous
Goro is the ideal place to start the roundtrip. Our excellent guide Tako made everything hassle free with minimal waiting period and excellent vistas
Hakone is beautiful and the tour helped us get to the best places and to some wonderful surprises, also with the addition of some historical information.
The guide was great his name was Mackie. He was super knowledgeable and was able to plan out the whole tour. We got to see so much it was great.
A beautiful area to explore and lots to see and do. Was helpful to have a guide to show us the highlights and help us navigate around as we didn’t have a lot of time. Managed to squeeze in everything we wanted to do with his help.
We enjoyed our tour with Hideaki (Hide) Nakayama very much. Despite the bad weather he was able to give us good impression of this wonderful region.
Masa-san was well prepared informative and a congenial tour guide. He adjusted the tour when confronted with an extremely rainy and cold day to include an art museum to let the weather clear up before proceeding. Great day in Hakone
Taka is on-point, prompt and will make your day perfectly suited for you. We had a day of laughter, incredible sights, delicious food at the top of the skyline in Hakone and a delicious mochi sweet inside a tea hut, 450 years old, Taka knew the 13 th master- in the lineage of this renowned family, and he came over to greet us. Such an honor. Taka you are the “Chairman” of Hakone and we are delighted to have spent the day with you.
Sho was the kindest, most patient, and best tour guide! He was wonderful to be with for the day and we had an incredible day/ packed itinerary! Thank you Sho!!!
Our guide Taka was very helpful, friendly and funny. We were allowed lots of toilet and snack stops and knew lots of information about the area and sights we saw.
Thank you 🙏 Taka for your wonderful guidance today in Hakone. The scenery was just so magical with all the snowfall and even though we had to make some detours due to the weather conditions, you made the tour a blast! You are an absolute treasure who is so informative & knowledgeable & have a warm personality. We learnt so much from you about history, art, culture & so much more. We will certainly be highly recommending you to all our friends who are planning on coming to Japan! We were so lucky to have you be our guide today.
Our Hakone private day tour was Amazing…Yoshi our tour guide was so knowledgeable! A must do! Having your private guide is worth it!!!
Perfect guide, Yoshi! With only one full day in Hakone we were so fortunate to have a licensed government tour guide as we were able to see so much! Amazing sites to see in Hakone! Thanks to Yoshi it was an Amazing day!
Yukie was a wonderful guide! She met us in Hakone at our ryokan and tailored our experience both to our interests, and to the time we had. She was thoughtful, helpful, and really informative. She guided us to a great place for lunch and helped us work through the local menu. It was a gift to have her guide us around the Hakone area. After the tour, she not only ensured we retrieved our bags and made our way back to catch our train, but escorted us to the station personally. I would not hesitate to recommend Yukie as your guide if you're ever in the area. Thank you so much Yukie for all your kindnesses and making our time in Hakone memorable.
Very knowledgeable guide in a beautiful mountain town. Hide added valuable context to our visit and was responsive to the kind of experience we wanted to have.
Overall, we had a pretty good tour with Kozee. The cable car, the ropeway and the boat on Lake Ashi were good. Unfortunately, the weather was not great and we did not get a single view of Mt. Fuji. The tori gate on Lake Ashi was nice, but the 30 min wait in line to take the picture was not enjoyable. Kozee was very nice, but his English was a bit difficult to understand and he ran pretty far ahead of us at times. Still, this tour is a great half-day way to see the key sights in Hakone (more interesting than the full day tour we took the next day).
Our tour guide Shuji, is excellent at what he does. Communicated extremely well in English, very organized and helpful, provided useful and interesting background about the History of Japan Extremely polite and courteous, a pleasure to spend time with. Highly recommend.
