We had a very fun time during our tour with Kaz on October 17th. Due to mechanical issues with the Hakone Ropeway, we were not able to follow the day’s planned route/itinerary. Kaz made some thoughtful decisions to avoid wasting time and make the most of our day. This included visiting both the Pola Museum of Art and the Hakone Open Air Museum. We enjoyed an extensive collection of Impressionist paintings at the Pola Museum and the large variety of sculpture at the Open Air Museum, including numerous works by Picasso. In between the museum visits, we were also able to enjoy a trip across Lake Ashi. Many thanks to Kaz for making a memorable day.

Lake Ashinoko (芦ノ湖, Ashinoko) was formed in the caldera of Mount Hakone after the volcano's last eruption 3000 years ago. Today, the lake with Mount Fuji in the background is the symbol of Hakone. The lake's shores are mostly undeveloped except for small towns in the east and north and a couple of lakeside resort hotels. The best views of the lake in combination with Mount Fuji can be enjoyed from Moto-Hakone (a few steps south from the sightseeing boat pier), from the Hakone Detached Palace Garden and from the sightseeing boats cruising the lake.
Hakone-jinja Shrine is a tranquil place of worship with a history stretching back more than 12 centuries. Its buildings have been destroyed by fire and rebuilt several times, yet the shrine and surrounding forest retain an atmosphere of both peace and mystery.
The Hakone Ropeway (箱根ロ-プウエイ) is part of the Hakone Round Course, a popular way to visit Hakone. It connects Sounzan Station (at the terminus of the Hakone Tozan Cablecar) with Togendai Station (at the shore of Lake Ashinoko) and stops at Owakudani and Ubako stations on the way. The ropeway is fully covered by the Hakone Free Pass. The ropeway's gondolas depart every minute and fit around ten people each. Traveling the full length of the ropeway takes around 30 minutes. Along the journey, passengers can enjoy views of the active, sulfuric hot spring sources of the Owakudani Valley between Sounzan and Owakudani and of Lake Ashinoko and Mount Fuji between Owakudani and Togendai if visibility allows. A transfer of gondolas is necessary at Owakudani, but no transfer is needed at Ubako. Admission 1480 yen (one way), covered by the Hakone Free Pass
The Hakone Open-Air Museum is the first open-air art museum in Japan, built in Hakone with the aim of harmonizing nature and art. Art works are placed everywhere on the vast site of about 70,000 square meters, surrounded by beautiful trees, grass, and moutains. It can be enjoyed by a wide range of ages, from families with children to adults traveling alone.
Owaku-dani is an active volcano that powers the hot springs in the local area. Take the ropeway over the volcano to the observatory to learn about this important volcano and try one of the black boiled eggs said to bring long life!
The POLA group, a skin care and beauty products company, opened the POLA Museum of Art (ポーラ美術館, Pōla Bijutsukan) in 2002 in order to display the extensive private art collection of the company's late owner, Suzuki Tsuneshi. The museum was built amid a forest of 300 year old beech trees, and although constructed of concrete and glass, it is designed so as not to disrupt the natural environment that surrounds it. To achieve this, the majority of the building is located underground. The museum features modern and contemporary paintings, sculptures, ceramics and glassware by mostly Japanese and European artists. In addition to temporary exhibits, the museum displays rotating exhibits drawn from its permanent collection which include works by artists such as Cezanne, Monet, Picasso and Renoir.
The Okada Museum of Art (岡田美術館, Okada Bijutsukan) is a privately-owned museum showcasing a wide collection of art pieces dating from antiquity to the modern era. Opened in 2013, the museum features a large array of East Asian ceramics, sculptures and paintings, all housed in a very spacious, modern facility surrounded by expansive grounds that feature a Japanese garden, a teahouse and a cafe with hot spring foot bath. The upper floors focus on Japanese art, with a variety of art forms and time periods represented. Most items on display are labeled with basic information in English, Chinese, Korean and Japanese. When entering, be aware that the museum's security measures are rather strict, requiring guests to store phones, cameras, bags and even stationary in free lockers at the front.
A beautiful slope of Pampas grass that is most beautiful in the fall.
The Hakone Glass no Mori (箱根ガラスの森) features Italian styled buildings housing a museum and shops. Outside is a large strolling garden surrounding a canal like pond. The garden has a number of large glass sculptures laid about it, as well as a cafe with an open terrace at one end where live canzoni (Italian ballads) performances are held. The Glass no Mori's Venetian Glass Museum houses a collection of over 100 pieces of Venetian glassware. It displays both modern and classical works in all forms including vases, goblets, lamps and sculptures. The Hakone Glass no Mori is run by the Ukai Group, an operator of themed high class restaurants, which also owns the Kawaguchiko Music Forest at Kawaguchiko in the Fuji Five Lakes region.
The Hakone Museum of Art (箱根美術館, Hakone Bijutsukan), located in Gora, was founded by Okada Mokichi in 1952. Its sister museum, the MOA Museum of Art was later built in Atami City on the Izu Peninsula. The museum displays mainly Japanese ceramics from prehistoric times through the Edo Period (1600-1868). These include a number of large earthenware and ceramic vessels such as a haniwa burial statue classified as an Important Cultural Property.
Choanji Temple (長安寺, Chōanji) is a temple of the Soto school of Zen Buddhism in the Sengokuhara area of Hakone. Established in 1356 in a quiet area at the base of a hill, the atmospheric temple has a small network of pleasant walking trails which wind through its wooded grounds and cemetery. What lends Choanji its particular charm, however, are the over two hundred statues of rakan (disciples of Buddha) scattered around the temple grounds. The statues began appearing in the 1980s and have been accruing ever since. Each statue has a unique face and shape, some contemplative and serious, others casual and humorous, and many show a modern edge in their artistic style and expressiveness compared to other collections of rakan statues. In autumn, the temple grounds are also one of Hakone's nicer spots to enjoy the autumn colors. The many color-changing trees here usually reach their peak color around mid November.
The Hakone Botanical Garden of Wetlands (箱根湿生花園, Hakone Shisseikaen) is a botanical garden in the highlands of Fuji Hakone Izu National Park. The park was founded in 1976 as a place to preserve and exhibit over 1700 varieties of marsh and alpine plants native to Japan. The garden offers a network of boardwalk paths through different types of marshland where you can learn about the plants that populate the wetlands. Information signs are in English and Japanese. The garden is popular during June when its Nikko Kisuge (daylily) are in full bloom, however it is closed during the winter months.
Gora Park (強羅公園, Gōra Kōen) is a western style landscape park located on the steep slope above Gora Station. It is a relaxing place to unwind and enjoy the scenery and views of Hakone. Gora Park is primarily a French styled landscape park featuring a large fountain and a rose garden. The park also has two greenhouses, one housing a tropical botanical garden while the other contains a flower garden. Additionally, there is a restaurant overlooking the main fountain, as well as the Hakuun-do Chaen teahouse. In the Crafthouse visitors can take part in craft activities such as glass blowing, glass etching, pottery and dried flower arrangement. Activities range in cost from 1000 to 5000 yen and take from 30 minutes to an hour to complete.
A quaint museum that keeps a collection of dollhouses from around the world, some over 200 years old. The museum holds different doll house exhibits year-round, so be sure to check what will be available to see! A great place for lovers of miniatures.
The Narukawa Museum of Art (成川美術館, Narukawa Bijutsukan) is a contemporary art museum dedicated to a style of painting known as nihonga. Literally meaning "Japanese-style painting", nihonga are paintings that adhere to traditional Japanese artistic conventions, techniques, tools and materials. The label was originally meant to simply distinguish the art from Western-style paintings, but artists have since expanded the scope of nihonga to also include Western techniques. Besides the art collection, the museum features an impressive panorama lounge and cafe with large windows overlooking Lake Ashinoko. On a clear day, it affords one of the best views of Mount Fuji, the lake and the floating torii gate of Hakone Shrine.
The Owakudani Nature Study Path is a special walking trail through an active volcanic area. It offers close-up views of Hakone’s geothermal activity. Advance reservation is required and the entrance fee is 800 yen.

The highlight of the trip was the visit to the open air must. It was beautiful. All the rides were enjoyable and our guide was knowledgeable and considerate . I would definitely recommend this trip to everyone.
Yes I would recommend this trip highly. The tour guide knew a lot about art which I was interested in. The highlight for me was the Open Air Museum. I wish I had more time to see all the other museums in Hakone with our guide.
Masa-san ( Masatoshi Fujii) made our Hakone visit truly memorable. His expert knowledge and thoughtful explanations brought the Hakone area, the Open-Air Museum, and the beautiful Shinto shrine to life, giving us a deeper appreciation of Japan’s history, culture, and traditions—especially their connection to Hakone. We highly recommend Masa-san to anyone visiting the area. Lili & Sepi
We had an enjoyable day with our guide, Hiroki Morikawa (Hiro), even though the weather did not cooperate. Inclement weather shut down the cable car, ropeway, and pirate ship loop, so Hiro adjusted the plan to keep us indoors as much as possible, which was a good call. We visited the Okada Museum of Art, had a lovely lunch together, and then watched a fascinating demonstration of how Hakone's traditional yosegi puzzle boxes are made. Hiro guided us easily between stops by bus and the Hakone Tozan Railway. Despite our best efforts, we were pretty wet by the time we got back to our hotel! But given the circumstances no one could control, we had a good day, and Hiro made the most of it with his knowledge, flexibility, and good company. If you are visiting Hakone, we recommend requesting Hiroki Morikawa. We would happily book with him again.
Fummy was wonderful! Despite a rainy day, he showed us around all the top spots in Hakone and shared some history/culture along the way. He met us in the lobby of our hotel, making the meeting & end point very convenient. He also go some great photos of us at the Hakone Shrine. 10/10 recommend! Thank you Fummy! The Morrisons
Yumi was a wonderful guide. We had four sites/ activities scheduled in Hakone but needed to pivot due to windy, rainy weather that prevented us from taking a tour on Lake Ashi. However, there are so many things to do in Hakone that we still had a great time. These included the Hakone Shrine, The Hakone Open Air Museum, and the Ropeway. Yumi was very knowledgeable and fun to be with. We enjoyed her company so much and she made a lasting impression. We will miss her!
Had a wonderful personalized experience with Naho. She was very friendly and knowledgeable. I absolutely recommend booking with her!
Had a wonderful personalized experience with Naho. She was very knowledgeable and friendly. I’d highly recommend booking with her. If weather forecast is poor, I’d suggest reaching out prior to your tour date to ask if she can arrange to book a car/taxi service for the day. We did this for half the day due to a downpour and it worked out very well! (I paid taxi service directly).
A wonderful day in Hakone with an amazing guide! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ We had a fantastic day exploring Hakone with our lovely guide, Kate. She was incredibly kind, spoke excellent English, and made sure we had a wonderful experience from start to finish. Before the tour, we had discussed the places we wanted to visit, and Kate carefully planned the day around our wishes. Even though we fell a little behind schedule, she managed to make sure we experienced everything on our list! Kate was extremely knowledgeable about the area and Japanese culture and traditions. She shared so many interesting stories and insights along the way. She also knew all the little tips and tricks to make the most of our time, often helping us avoid long queues and making the entire day run smoothly. What we especially appreciated was how she made sure everyone in our group felt included and involved throughout the day. Kate even went above and beyond by arranging paper versions of our Hakone Freepasses in advance, as the ticket office had been closed when we arrived in Hakone. She knew that paper tickets would be the better option for us, and she was absolutely right! Our phones had very limited network coverage during the tour, so having the physical passes turned out to be a lifesaver. Kate truly cared about giving us the best possible experience. Her kindness, knowledge, thoughtful planning, and attention to detail made our day in Hakone both enjoyable and memorable. We couldn’t have asked for a better guide and would wholeheartedly recommend Kate to anyone visiting Hakone!
We had the MOST wonderful tour of Hakone with Ryoko! She was SO knowledgeable, warm, & flexible. Excellent in EVERY way!
An incredible experience that catered to each of our needs. Our guide Naho was in contact with us at all times, even before the tour, and was always willing to help us with anything. Honestly, 100% recommendable.
Our Guide Atsushi was fantastic ! So knowledgeable about the history of Japan and the sites we were going to see. l! He really capture the essence of this area and loved how he took us the “reverse” route so we would avoid the crowds. The day was absolutely perfect with walking , sight seeing, pirate ship ride, gondola ride (saw Mt Fuji ) , gardens, and then dropped us off at the Open Air Museum which is totally worth going to ! Highly recommend our tour guide to do this tour !
It was a very grateful and cultured experience. Thanks a lot to Shuji for the guide!
My guide was , Yumi. She had details of the place I wanted to go and what my main interests were. We visited the Tokyo National Museum in Ueno, a rich experience of Japanese history and culture. Yumi is knowledgeable, friendly and the perfect guide for me. I prefer to take time and immerse rather than rush and ‘tick off boxes’. I would recommend Yumi very highly.
What a fun and easy way to see so much of Hakone! My dad and I had the best time getting to learn from our guide about the areas culture and history. He was also incredibly witty which made it even more fun! This experience was especially worth it if you are trying to see a lot of places around Hakone in one day. Highly recommend!
Some great scenery and interesting cable car and Ropaway travel . If a tourist like us , Avoid weekends as a lot of locals also visit hakone over weekend .
Spent a fabulous day on the Hakone Golden Route with our guide, Leo. Visited the volcano, ate a black egg , traveled on the hakone ropeway, did the sightseeing cruise on the lake and visited the Hakone Shrine. We decided to save the open air Museum for the next day. Leo was an excellent guide with extensive knowledge of the area and very accommodating. Leo even helped me get a reservation at a Tokyo Restuarant two days from now that is in a high demand. Highly recommend.
It was great to have a private guide to show us around. He was lovely. We would have struggled to get around by ourselves.
Atsushi was an excellent guide. We had a wonderful tour around Hakone Park. He was very patient and adaptable with a good sense of humour. We really enjoyed his company.
We had a wonderful day with Leo who is very knowledgeable, thoughtful and extremely helpful. Thanks to his perfect knowledge of Hakone and its surroundings he took us to incredible places with no tourists, a truly great experience !
Yosh was great. Very knowledgeable, informative and flexible responding to the weather and what we wanted to do.
Hiro is obviously an experienced guide. He answered any question we asked. He was well organised in dealing with our preferences and was able to taylor our itinerary to our interests. Overall a very enjoyable day. Would definitely recommend.
We had an awesome tour of the Hakone area with Masa! Even though the weather prevented us from doing our planned hike, Masa seamlessly adapted the day and made sure we still had an incredible experience. He is exceptionally kind, helpful, and packed with interesting information about the area. We couldn’t have asked for a better guide and highly recommend booking with Masa to anyone visiting Japan and heading to Hakone!
Atsushi was an excellent guide and took us on a fully organised trip all around Hakone. He was very articulate and explained every place visited in much detail. Be ready to walk lots. It was a pleasure to meet him and hear about the area. Thank you.
Did not have the experience everyone else noted. Start at 9, dropped at our last stop at 12. Not a 6-8hr experience and not worth the money. We did 3 stops in 3 hrs, each stop rushed and I was told that the 3rd stop was the last of the day. I told our guide he can go if that’s the case. The possible itinerary is a posted on the listing far exceeds reality. We took the bus to the ropeway, ropeway to the lake, bus to the open air museum. We were supposed to stop by Hakone shrine/samurai path/town with the magic boxes, but immediately told to get on the bus as soon as we got off the boat. I could have organized this myself and came away with the same experience.
Fummy was a great tour guide! Very knowledgeable and made great use of the time we had
Atsushi was an absolutely phenomenal guide, and we had an incredible day. He was so accommodating and willing to change plans to suit our needs. We had the best time and really loved everything he planned for us to do. He’s also a great conversationalist!
This is the perfect tour to experience the best of Hakone. Our guide, Hiro, was incredibly communicative beforehand and made sure we were able to visit all the places on our list. It was especially nice to experience Hakone from a local's perspective and explore places we wouldn't have found on our own. We were also lucky enough to have incredible views of Mount Fuji throughout the day from several different vantage points. I would recommend this tour to anyone, and if you get Hiro as your guide, you're in for a treat. We had the best time with him and shared plenty of laughs.
I had learned a lot more about Hakone thanks to our tour guide Kate, she was very informative and considerate due to the typhoon we were hit with. She was also very encouraging and always offered to take photos of myself and my partner. I would recommend it to anyone who goes to Hakone
Niro was perfect for us. He was flexible for our first time in Hakone and the kids enjoyed it
Good experience. Different locations that were chosen to be less tourist oriented and more cultural. Our guide was helpful and knowledgeable.
Good and informative. We went to a few unique places and our guide was accommodating. Favorite was the temple as off the beaten path.
The Hakone area is absolutely beautiful and there is a lot to see so it was great to have an excellent guide (Hiro) who was knowledgeable and had a great sense of humour. Hiro was able to shepherd us around using public transit very effectively. Highlights included black eggs, superb view of Mt. Fuji, a short boat ride on Lake Ashinoko, and an incredible Azalea garden at Hotel de Yama.
This was one of the highlights of our trip to Japan. Shuji was an excellent guide and made the whole day very. fun and informative.
Shuji was an excellent tour guide!
Our guide, Hiro-san, did a wonderful job introducing us to the area of Hakone - leading us on a great tour of several requested destinations. We were lucky to see Mt. Fuji at the top of the ropeway, had a fun ride on a pirate ship on Lake Ashi, enjoyed a fantastic lunch at a local restaurant, and picked up some great souvenirs at a puzzle-box store which have wowed our family and friends. One of the great things that Hiro did throughout the day was to educate and amuse us with numerous pictures, stories, and lessons from his backpack. It felt like Hiro-san was part of our family that day and we can't imagine having tried to experience Hakone's great sites without him.
Very organized, easy to get around with guide using public transit (that was part of the fun)…beautiful sites to see
We loved our day with Yumi. She was so warm and friendly and very knowledgeable. She took us to the major attractions in Hakone efficiently and helped us avoid long lines. We took cable cars, a lovely boat ride and the bus.
Leo was a great tour guide. We got to do and see all of the major Hakone sites. It was a perfect day.
Hiro was absolutely amazing! Even though it wasn’t the best day to see Mt. Fuji, Hiro took us around the Hakone loop and showed us everything! He was very knowledgeable about japanese history and even gave us our own japanese language lesson at the soba noodle place he took us to. I cannot recommend Hiro and this tour enough!!
Unfortunately the weather restricted some of our options, but Leo adapted the tour and we had a fantastic time.
Excellent tour with brilliant guide. Thank you Shuji you were extremely helpful and informative.
It is once in a lifetime experience in all levels. Our Guide, Mr. Hiro made the tour unforgettable with his kind hospitality and by explaining every details. The view was spectacular and hard to explain. We love every minute. thank you Mr. Hiro
Leon was an exceptional tour guide! He made us feel welcomed and provided my family and I with an unforgettable experience! We got to see amount Fuji and had a great time. Highly recommend!
Leo is an incredible guide! He is attentive, professional, and kind. He did a wonderful job showing me the treasures of Hakone, and I will always be grateful for this experience.
Leo is great guide, easy to understand and knows the area and history well. Overall, we had a very fulfilling day and if afforded more time, would book another trip
In hindsight, we NEVER could have covered so much area with such rich experiences without booking a tour. Just navigating from Point A to Point B would have been a total frustration and we would have lost valuable time. Our favorites were walking along the Cedar Tree- lined old highway path, the open air sculpture museum, Ropeway cable car, and Hakone check-point. We were so fortunate that the weather and visibility cooperated and we got to see Mt Fuji! We did the pirate ship - and it was enjoyable to see the shoreline and shrines from the boat, but if I had to cut one thing out, it would be that experience. All the way our guide, Shuji, was informing and educating us in the history and meaning of our experiences. Shuji is very knowledgeable, accommodating and a great storyteller. Thanks to Shuji we had a most enjoyable stay in Hakone.
Hiro-san was a wonderful and thoughtful guide. Even though the weather was rainy and overcast, Hiro-san created a great itinerary that took into account our interests and his suggestions. We really enjoyed the 1:1 tour experience. It felt personalized and warm in a way that felt very special. We were able to get a unique glimpse into the Japanese culture, history, and language--as well as getting to know our guide. Thank you!
Fantastic, educational and informative tour of the Hakone region with Yoshi! He was very accommodating, knowledgeable and got us to each venue with precision and impeccable timing! 😁 highly recommend this service and Yoshi in particular!
