A truly wonderful hotel! It has a beautiful traditional atmosphere and provides top-notch service. Everything was impeccably clean and very well maintained. It was honestly one of the best hotel experiences I’ve ever had. I highly, highly recommend this hotel! We especially enjoyed the traditional Japanese breakfast. It was absolutely delicious and, honestly, the best kaiseki meal I’ve ever had. Everything was beautifully prepared and tasted amazing. A truly unforgettable stay!

Great hotel with respect for its old history. Room was fantastic and spacy. Shower in room with water from the onsens. Breakfast is fixed with limited options. Would have been good with more options. Staff was friendly and very serviceminded, and very polite. We would stay here again.
This can only be summarised as a disappointing and somewhat absurd experience (which I wish was funny but it wasn’t). Our best guess after staying a few days is that this is where wealthy Japanese go to cosplay something they believe is a European experience. As a European, it is mildly disturbing and not at all relaxing. Before arrival, we were told to get off the bus at what later proved to be two stops earlier than necessary and they would send a shuttle. We called and were met by staff who did not speak a word English and had to walk up with the luggage. This was mildly annoying as I was pregnant with severe back pain but probably more so for my husband who had to carry it all. Upon arriving, we realised this lack of language proficiency was a theme for all staff. However, they are absurdly subservient at the same time, meaning you get absolutely no service of any substance but rather a lot of complete and utter confusion along with unnecessary pleases, sorrys and thank yous. Instead of getting help, you end up giving up because it’s deeply uncomfortable asking for anything at all. For someone who enjoys feeling their own privileges and holding power, this is potentially a happy place though. It is all very new money, no class and visual style over substance. First of all, it might be practical to know that in June, there is no comfortable place to sit or stay outside to ie. read a book. None whatsoever. The outside pool area is only open for about a month, mid-July to mid-August. You are left with a few hard park benches in the beautiful gardens. There are not many other places to be outside close to the hotel. We ended up going to the open-air museum by taxi and sit there to read. It seems you are meant to spend leisure time posing for social media in the lobby. Inside. On a beautiful summer day. The food has great reviews both here and on Japanese Tabélog. After a visit to their Cascade restaurant and Lounge dining area, we are mystified as to why and severely disappointed. Our dinner at Cascade was downright bad-tasting. This is supposed to be "Western-style" aka. French. I’m truly happy for them no Frenchman has set foot there yet, as the kitchen staff probably wouldn’t live to tell the tale. Ref. pregnancy, we had an alcohol-free evening. The meal nevertheless kicked off with a serving of a bottle of Perrier water as if it was champagne, which would have been hilarious if it wasn’t for the fact that an actual server is forced to complete this charade. I also got half a glass of juice, which was funny. We got rapeseed-oily salad, sad and dry fries, a tomato soup based on ready-made tomato powder, and a Caesar salad that was just about half-decent (not a Caesar salad though, but never mind the details), as well as croquettes with tartar sauce that was also way too oily and with no tartness to offset it. We gave up and ended the meal early. To top it off, this was so ridiculously overpriced that it is offensive. The irony: I have paid less for Michelin-starred meals in Paris. One should probably also know that you have to wait in line for 15-30 minutes to access breakfast. We never bothered and after the evening meal, I was thankful. Our light lunch in the Lounge was perfectly average, with French toast and Club sandwich (again, not a Club sandwich, but meh to finer points). Again, inappropriately overpriced. Be aware that you can easily go down to their bakery, Picot, and buy the full pastry menu for a fraction of the price and eat take-out in the gardens. The bakery is quite good! The onsen is also lovely, but do not expect the view they are advertising: it is blocked by screens. In total, it felt like a relief to leave.
Nice historical hotel with much to explore on a rainy day. Some may consider it old but we found it to be charming. Very friendly and helpful foreign staff. Could not say the same about the cold, unwelcoming Japanese staff who scowled at our sumimasens and walked away after muttering a response. Never have I ever encountered such rude service in Japan (or anywhere really). I almost took it personally but after reading the reviews, it seems like that’s the norm. Unfortunate as this hotel is wonderful otherwise. I would never visit again if it were not for the foreign hotel staff.
My experience at the Fujiya was serene and peaceful. The Mountain backdrop was visually pleasing. I booked a message and used the hotel onsen everyday. The Japanese restaurant, Kikka-So offered authentic and very well prepared Japanese cuisine. The rooms were comfortable and roomy. All the hotel staff were friendly and helpful. I absolutely enjoyed walks in the hotel gardens only reserved for guests. It is located near a hiking trail and shops.
