Cacomixtle actually took me on two tours, both in english. Both the walking tour of the town, and the hike to the petroglyphs on top of Cerro del Sombrero, were outstanding. Juan Carlos was my guide for both, and he was very knowledgeable, arrived on time, shared a lot of extras about the flora, fauna, natural terrain, and history of this beautiful town, and adjusted the tour as necessary to accommodate unexpected events. A good friend of mine had a similarly wonderful experience two years ago, when Susanna was her guide. Highly recommend booking a guided tour with Cacomixtle!

Susana, her partner Antonio, and Antonio’s niece from Juarez picked me up on time at El Pípila, and Susana drove us safely to Santa Rosa de Lima, narrating a bit along the way regarding tunnels, hacienda remains, and sections of the Camino Real which we passed. We stopped and bought atole. Early in the hike, we passed a small store where a guy was working outside on a large steaming kettle of ate over a small fire. Ate is a reduced fruit candy, in this case made from a local fruit called tejocote. I’m an independent traveler who can manage a purchase of atole or ate, but I might not have stopped for the ate and really appreciated their explanation of what we were trying (particularly for the ate). Susana and I traded mostly common names in Spanish and English for various birds, plants, and mammals (although we didn’t see any mammals). They explained the small scale charcoal production which occurs in the area, and explained the land ownership and that hiking on private land is generally legal in Mexico without permission. We completed a loop of about five miles to the Perlilla reservoir and back to Santa Rosa, getting great views of oak forests, canyons, and lower foothills at a few places. I got a good sense of the landscape and learned a lot during the 5 hours of the tour. I would do this again if given the opportunity. We spoke Spanish almost entirely, which I am an early intermediate speaker of, but I still learned a lot. If you are a Spanish speaker, I’m sure you will enjoy the tour even more.
I can't use enough superlatives to describe my experience with Susana on a solo hike to the Sierra Santa Rosa. From start to finish, Susana was sharing with me her great knowledge about the region, the Sierra, the flora and fauna, the history, and anything else that came up. Her English is perfect, though I chose to speak Spanish with her. The pueblo de Santa Rosa is beautiful and charming, and even the drive there and back felt like part of the adventure. The hike was not difficult but varied, and we enjoyed sitting on the rocks at the top with snacks, enjoying the spectacular view. Beyond her knowledge and professionalism, however, Susana is a kind, interesting, and overall amazing person with whom it is an honor and delight to get to spend time. At our meeting point in Guanajuato another American woman who was going to ride in the car with us to do a bike tour with another guide got locked out of her airbnb. Both guides went above and beyond to help her get in contact with her airbnb host. Then, after our tour was over, and Susana texted me a link to a place she had recommended, I let her know I had gotten locked into my airbnb room, and she offered to send over a friend to help me and continued to check in on me after it was resolved. This was definitely one of the high points of my time in Guanajuato, and I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to get out of the city and have a different experience in the Sierra.
I highly recommend "Hiking with Antonio" as a way to see some of the countryside outside of Guanajuato City. Antonia is fluent in Spanish and English. His career was spent in the local silver mining business. He's an excellent driver on the curvy roads :-) And, he's a superb guide on the hiking trails. He both offered information, and was glad to answer any questions, I posed about the area's history, culture, customs, flora and fauna. You won't regret spending part of a day with Antonio to explore outside of the city!!
Antonio was terrific. Super knowledgeable and always willing to answer questions. And Susana is an excellent resource for all things tourist related in Guanajuato and the region. I highly recommend them.
I did both hikes and they were equally terrific. Susana and Antonio are so knowledgeable about the flora and fauna of the area. As well Antonio gave me a great overview of the mining history that fueled the wealth of Guanajuato for many years. Highly recommended if you're looking for exercise and great information about this beautiful part of Mexico.
Antonio picked my dad and I up from our hotel and drove us through the fantastic tunnel network running through the city. He was a font of knowledge about Guanajuato, so that even before we had reached the Bufa hills we had learned a great deal. Our guide was very patient and conversational with us, telling us a great deal about the city's mining history, mummies, local plants and animals and sports teams, mesoamerican history and geological undergirdings, all while the area's scenery opened up as we ascended. This is a strenuous hike so good shoes and a walking stick are advised, especially for those worried about their knees.
Lovely walk with Susanah, informative and tailored hiking level! Private guided tour & stopped at a cute bakery on the way down
I have done the La Bufa hike twice with Cacomixtle – once with Antonio and most recently with Susana. This is a great hike of easy-to-moderate difficulty that I would highly recommend for anyone who enjoys the outdoors, and Susana and her team are great guides to show you the way and provide whatever background on the area, or Guanajuato generally, that you want. The “reward” at the end of the hike – a beautiful panoramic view of Guanajuato – is very special. Cacomixtle does such a great job tailoring the tour to whatever may interest you.
I had a great tour with Susana in the Santa Rosa area -- I learnt so much about Guanajuato city and the hike we did I learnt all about the flora and fauna of the area. After the hike she was kind enough to extend the time and take me to a restaurant and ordered local delicacies that I would have otherwise never tried. It was a really lovely and memorable day and anyone that chooses to do this tour would also find it this way. I really really recommend this tour!!
I thought it was a group tour, but it turned out to be a private tour. the guide Antonio didn't take me to Santa Rosa, but instead took a short drive to La Bufa south east of Guanajuato, which is the big cross on top of the mountain as advertised. It was an adventurous hike taking 2 hours up & down, not for beginners and the unfit though. One feels acomplished having reached the cross and you have the entire Guanajuato under your feet. I really appreciate Antonio who is very experienced and I will be back.
We had a wonderful and inspiring time with Susana. The walk was beautiful and very peaceful. Susana is such a treasure trove of knowledge and way better than our guide books. We also stoped off at the amazing ceramics shop and bought some items there . Highly recommend this tour.
My friend and I visited Guanajuato for a 5-day Encaustic Art Workshop. We decided to extend our stay to explore this gorgeous town for a few more days. One of those days we arranged to do an easy 5-km hike with Susana in the Sierras de Santa Rosa. It was wonderful to see a different side of Guanajuato, literally from the mountains. Susana and her father are both from Guanajuato, and their love and knowledge of the area shows. Susana is quite knowledgeable about the local flora, which was fortunate as my friend loves to compare plants from where we live on her travels. In addition, a lovely local man from Santa Rosa de Lima joined us for part of our hike as he wanted to chat with us about his travels in the USA. Susana modified our hike so we could spend more time talking w/Jesus, which was a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the people and land in this area. After the hike, my Apple Watch clocked in at 4.3 miles, which was perfect for us! Thank you so much, Susana, for an awesome morning.
I brought two English speaking friends on this hike with Susana in the cerros. We all had a wonderful time. Susana knows all the plants and animals, and tells about the people and the land. It was a very relaxing hike in a beautiful place. Thank you Susana!
I was spending a few days in Guanajuato and I realized how great this place was not only for urban/historical sightseeing, but also for hiking and adventures in the wild. So I contacted Cacomixtle to hire a local guide (consider that hiking trails in Mexico are usually not marked, so you'd better not go out and explore by yourself), and take me on a hiking tour to the highlands overlooking Guanajuato. They promptly replied to my request and the day after I was off for a scenic hike to Cerro de La Bufa with my guide, Don Antonio, who not only is an experienced mountain guide, but also knows a lot about the history, nature, and traditions of Guanajuato. The steep, about 5 km long hike we did took us to the Cueva de San Ignacio de Loyola, which every year on July 31st hosts a huge celebration dedicated to Saint Ignatius (the founder of the Jesuits, who played a key role in the history of the town) an reached its highest point in a panoramic spot situated nearly 400 m above the town, from which I had a breathtaking view of the surrounding valleys, as well as of some stunning rock formations like El Pastor and La Bufa. Thanks to Don Antonio I also learned a lot about the vegetation, as well as about the local traditions and the mining industry, which has traditionally played a key role in the history of Guanajuato (Don Antonio himself has a background in mining engineering). I highly recommend this tour to anybody who enjoys hiking and would like to combine the cultural experience in Guanajuato with some adventure in the wild. Cacomixtle is a great operator, Susanne (who manages it) always replied within few minutes to all my enquiries, and Don Antonio is a great, reliable and empathic guide, it felt very safe hiking with him and by the end of the hike it was like talking to a friend I had known for years. I don't know if I will have the opportunity to hit Guanajuato again in the future (it's the town I loved the most in my 3-week tour around Mexico), but in that case I would definitely contact Cacomixtle again to go and explore some more trails in the beautiful nature surrounding Guanajuato. Thank you so much guys for being amazing! I'll never forget the experience I had with you!
Antonio picked us up in his SUV in the city of Guanajuato, and we were off for one of the most pleasant days of our trip. We drove up to the town of Santa Rosa to being our hike. We walked through the streets of this quaint town to the trailhead. The well maintained trail goes through a beautiful oak forest. Along the way Antonio pointed out different plants and the history of the area. We spoke in Spanish, but he also speaks English. The trail went to a spectacular vista point of the valley. We were two women traveling and we always felt safe on the trip. Walking through the country side and the conversations we had with Antonio gave us a more complete experience of Guanajuato. I highly recommend this tour.
We are very glad we experienced Guanajuato outside of the historic center. Susana picked us up from our hotel and we began our excursion to Santa Rosa. The weather did not cooperate as it began to rain. We stopped for a hot chocolate to warm up in Santa Rosa de Lima. All the way Susana pointed out landmarks and historic accounts. We decided to seek the Sun and she picked an alternate hike closer to town in el serró de La Buffa. This was about a 1.5 mile hike that ended at a cave. Along the way Susan pointed out different tree and cacti species and a few fauna that crossed out path. Overall this was a great hiking experience. We highly recommend hiking with Susana.
This was such a fun and beautiful hike with Don Antonio! We started at 9am with chilly weather and fog and continued our way walking through the streets of the charming pueblo of Santa Rosa de Lima until we reached the forest. Then, we followed paths filled with rocks, wet leaves, wild flowers and mature oak trees offering shade from above. Once up top, we reached a clearing and made our way to a beautiful mirador, or lookout point, where we were blessed to have the fog break and sun started shining. Don Antonio was very kind, knowledgeable, and joyful. He offered us fresh fruit and locally grown peanuts as a snack and we even got to see him use his childhood slingshot to throw a few rocks in the field. It was a very memorable experience overall and I highly recommend it. Overall, it was about 3 hours, but just 5km (3 miles) in distance at an easy pace enjoying the views and Don Antonio’s wisdom along the way. The beauty of Guanajuato clearly extends outside the city limits.
Susana was an excellent guide. I had a great day with her. She was very knowledgeable and lots of fun! She even got me a gift for my birthday! :)
Susana is a great guide, very knowledgeable and she was fun to be with. When we come back we will definitely use her as a guide again.
Although I was extremely disappointed that my initial TripAdvisor tour was cancelled with late notice, Carolina (an amazing front desk associate at the Hotel Indigo) quickly connected me with tour leader, Susana, knowing that I was looking for more physical activity. Don't get me wrong, Guanajuato is gorgeous; however, if you only see Zona Centro, then you are missing out on a lot of additional beauty this area has to offer. Susana is clearly in great physical condition from hiking so it was good that I had someone to lead a quick pace ! More importantly, Susana shared with me additional history of the area and I was able to practice my Spanish. (Susana was so patient with me because I really need conversation outside of an app like Duolingo). I will note here that Susana also took me on a hike to Cerro de La Bufa, which was a bit more vigorous -- and very exhilarating! I learned about some of the special feast days in the area as well that involve some of the hiking sites "La Cruz" (cross) and "La Cueva" (cave). I will run out of space here soon, but getting out into the rural areas allowed us to connect with local people going about their daily lives. My favorite experience was meeting a young girl with a cage of bunnies and finding out some of the "back story" on her family's life there. Had it not been for Susana, these types of experiences wouldn't have happened. If you are a bit more independent, I encourage you to contact Susana and have her customize hikes for you as she did for me. Such great memories !!
Susana is a great guide, patient, confident, trustworthy. She loves the area and knows it well. Her plans are custom made and she is open to suggestions. We were asked to take masks and to keep distance. She was very respectful with the protocol for the new normality. When it started to rain (I didn't expect that) they lent me a jacket. I had a great experience with her.
The walk was incredible, it was through a protected natural area, you can't imagine that there is such a beautiful and well-kept place just a few minutes from Guanajuato, our guide Susana is super friendly and explains everything very well, plus she was very punctual and He gave us excellent food and drink recommendations, it was definitely a great experience highly recommended.
Incredible experience, Susana our guide, super attentive I highly recommend it A beautiful place, a quiet tour that was enjoyed with the opportunity to see some birds and flora of the region and eat some wild tejocotes
Susanna and her team were very friendly and good guides. The views were stunning. Communication from the beginning was very good. The hike wasn't that difficult but the 360 views are worth it! I give my full recommendation without reservation
They gave us excellent Service, the people were very friendly and accompanied us all the way, plus the place was amazing and we felt very taken care of.
