Volcano Day: Horseback, Zipline, Waterslide, Hotsprings & Culture

We had an amazing family day exploring the volcano area with Hiking Guanacaste! This was definitely one of the highlights of our Costa Rica vacation because there was so much variety throughout the day. We went from ziplining and horseback riding to the water slide, Pozo, and finally relaxing in the hot springs with a mud bath. What we loved most was that every activity felt different. The ziplining was exciting, the horseback ride gave us a completely different way to experience the scenery, and the water slide was so much fun for the whole family. After all the activities, getting to relax in the hot springs and enjoy the mud bath was the perfect way to finish the day. Our guide, Ian, was fantastic. He was friendly, helpful, and made sure everyone was comfortable throughout the day. He did a great job keeping everything organized while still making the experience feel relaxed and fun. He was also very knowledgeable about the area and happy to answer all of our questions. This was one of those days where we felt like we got to experience several different sides of Costa Rica instead of just doing one activity and heading back to the hotel. If you’re staying in Guanacaste and looking for a full day of adventure, nature, and relaxation, we definitely recommend this experience. Ian made the day even better, and our family left with some amazing memories from Costa Rica!

This tour had it ALL! Hiking around a volcano, relaxing in a lazy river, swimming (& cliff jumping if you want & we did!) in the MOST beautiful spot, a delicious local lunch, and the BEST tour guide and driver, Jose and Rafael!! Jose was friendly, knowledgeable, and easy to talk to. My family and I would highly recommend this tour! Pura vida!!

We had a great experience on the Rincón de la Vieja Volcano Hike & Crystal-Blue Swimming Adventure. Our driver, Rafa, and guide, Hernon were both great. Super friendly, very informative, and happy to talk and provide local insight. Our party consisted of two adults, a 14 year old, and a 9 year old. This excursion was just right for our family and not too much for our youngest. We loved the tubing and cliff jumping. Our guide didn't intend to get wet, but was a great sport and had a great attitude when he did in fact end up in the water. We ended up doing the water portion first, then the hike, which seemed backwards, but also, doing it in that order helped ensure that neither location was busy while we were there which made for an uncrowded and pleasant experience. Our driver and guide were both super knowledgable, great conversationalists, and hospitable. We enjoyed our lunch as well. There was plenty of cold water available after our personal water bottles were emptied. The excursion and the guides were a highlight of our trip. We'd do it again and would enjoy doing future excursions with Rafa and Hernon!

My husband and I, in our late 60s, had a very good experience on this Rincon de la Vieja Volcano hike and river swimming. Diego, our guide, picked us up at our hotel (Andaz Papagayo) and we drove in his car about 2 hours to the volcano rim hike. The 2.5 mile hike was fairly easy, though with some slippery rocks I was glad to be wearing hiking boots. Sneakers also would be fine. On the hike we saw boiling cauldrons of mud, lots of tree species, and a few animals (lizards, wild turkeys, birds). Bring water. After the hike, we had a pleasant lunch at a family run restaurant. Following, Diego took us to a river known for its blue-green waters. We changed into bathing suits and leisurely floated down the river in tubes, lovely after the hot hike. Diego was courteous and informative about the countryside. His English, though a bit limited, was much better than our Spanish and we communicated well with a Spanglish combo. All in all a good day.

Such a great time with Jose. He was attentive to our needs and brought us to the best spots. We wanted to have a challenging hike (we did over 8 miles!) to a waterfall, lunch and then to relax in hot springs. He made it all happen with a great attitude. He was fun, friendly and informative. His communication was great and he arrived on time. We did not lack anything. I would recommend him to all my friends and family.

Never happened. Didn’t pick us up, day ruined. They don’t answer phone calls or customer chat. Don’t book with them. Viator couldn’t even reach them. A complete waste of a vacation day.

If you can request your guides ask for Ian and Rafa they were amazing! Both made our trip of us 4 fun and informative. We took our time hiking and they were great showing us plants and wildlife we would have missed on our own! Swimming was great as well!

I did this hike in August this year and it was an excellent experience from start to finish. It’s a great activity to do either with a group or solo, as I felt very safe at all times. The organization is top-notch: from the comfortable and punctual bus ride, to the meal stops and the changing areas (set up like dressing rooms), everything is thoughtfully arranged so you can just focus on enjoying the experience. On top of that, the value for money is unbeatable. For a very affordable price, you get a complete, well-guided experience with logistics that truly exceed expectations. Absolutely worth it, and I would definitely do it again!

I can't help recommending this experience. The volcano trail is challenging but offers spectacular views and connects you fully to nature. And the end... the ultimate reward! Excellent guide, Jose, very helpful and attentive to the needs of the group, as well as the driver. Magnificent Old Man's Corner! The pool Los Coyotes was very nice but a little dirty :( Lunch could have been tastier but it wasn't bad.
