There were very few fish. There wasn’t much to see. Wouldn’t recommend. Lots of other adventures available that are more worth it.

William is a great guide. The snorkeling wasn't that clear but was still good. William showed us cool things both in the water and on the island. We had a fun time!
A very lovely time! We got good instructions and information about our trip! We stayed safe and it was glorious!
Excellent adventure to Captain Island. The unique experience on this tour is all the incredible seashells on the island and the tiny crabs . To start you will kayak through the surf and paddle about 15-20 minutes until you reach Captain Island. Once ashore your guide will set you up with your snorkel gear and off you go to see marine life. We stayed close to the rocks and along the island and saw some great fish our guide was excellent finding a spectacular blue starfish for my wife and family to behold. . Be careful when you first reach the island there are a lot of rocks just beneath the surface. Watch your steps easy to fall over. Great adventure relatively easy paddle to the island. Highlights are the seashells and crabs on the island.
William was absolutely wonderful. We would definitely do this to her again. The snorkeling was incredible and the national park.
The waves were 2-3 feet and it was an adventure paddling over the break to get off the beach. We got to the tiny island and realized we wouldn't be able to see anything snorkeling because the waves were kicking up too much sand. The waves were breaking pretty hard over the reef by the island so we waited around for a while to see if the waves would die down. They didn't, and getting back was an adventure and felt a little dangerous. We did capsize once getting back because of the waves, but it was near land and not a big deal. If we had known we wouldn't be able to snorkel I would have found something different to do with the 2.5 hours. I did this with my 11 year old son and it was definitely an adventure for us and a decent bit of exercise for me, but not at all what we were expecting. My son was super bored on the island, except for looking at the hermit crabs. I was worried about the waves when we took off, but I figured the island might be more sheltered and we could see some stuff, which turned out not to be the case. I wish the tour company had been more upfront that the waves meant it was unlikely we would be able to really snorkel, if they had we would have found something else to do, maybe just play on the beach in the waves. If our experience is any indication, if the waves are 2-3 feet or more, this is a wavy and vigorous kayak journey without snorkeling.
This was really fun! Our guide was very knowledgeable and fun. Island is very tiny but cool things to explore
The kayaking was fun but the snorkeling was not. Not sure if it was because of the weather but you couldn’t even see a foot in front of you. If you decide to go I would definitely recommend water shoes not that they really helpful on the very slippery rocks, when getting out on the island. But if you're a little squeamish about slimy feeling rocks it helps. Our guide slipped and fell hard, hopefully he was really ok ( as he said) and two people cut their hands on the rocks. It takes quite a while to get each person one at a time into the water ( we had 6 in our group). So by the time everyone was in we were more than ready to get out because you couldn’t see anything. The pineapple at the end was delicious and we did have some laughs!
Kayaking was ok but the "snorkeling" was highly over sold. We basically spent $100 each to paddle to an island and look for sea shells
We did a morning kayaking and snorkeling excursion with Native's Way, and it was amazing! We got to see cool sea creatures, including starfish, tropical fish, and more! The guides were very knowledgeable and made us feel very safe and welcomed!
It was an amazing experience, we learned, we enjoyed, we loved it! Our guide guy was super kind! Explain so many things! Even teach us how to use the kayak, and was super patient and we had so much fun
Nice guide and good kayaks, but not much to see around the island. Maybe bad luck that day? I don't think so given the amount of grass at the bottom of the water there. Anyway our masks were foggy all the time. So kayaking was OK but snorkeling wasn't.
We had a beautiful day kayaking and snorkeling. One disappointing thing that made things more difficult for both the kids and adults —you NEED water shoes (like Keenes) and we were not told that! The island is extremely rocky and painful without shoes on. Water shoes should be required in my opinion!! Also, the tour lasted 45 minutes longer than what it was advertised to be, and since it was so very hot that day, it was just too long in the sun.
Our guide was amazing! We learned a ton about the island and he pulled a puffer fish & spider starfishes for us to look at. Wasn’t the best snorkeling in the world but was definitely still worth it!!
Natives way kayaking and snorkeling with Dīvis: What a pleasant way to spend a morning and get a mild workout, too! Met at the beach to launch the 2-person sit-upon kayaks into the surf. Then a 20 minute paddle to tiny Captain’s Island in the bay. Landing on the rocky shore was tricky because it was slippery. Watch out! Snorkeling in the warm water of the cove was great. An abundance of fish, along with some starfish and one lovely Zebra Moray eel awaited us. Our guide, Dīvis, was delightful. The expedition lasted 2 1/2 hours.
Well worth the money, would highly recommend , great group of Captains, very funny and knowledgeable. Snorkeling and swimming with the sea life. BBQ and show entertaining.
The Kayaking and Snorkeling was great fun! Well worth the time and money. I think one shouldn't expect too much from the snorkeling part, there are no colorful corals or super special animals, but definitely some nice and interesting fish to see. Definitely wear something that protects your back while snorkeling, the water surface turns into a magnifying glass for the sun (rookie mistake, I know)
Guide was very forthcoming and helpful. The snorkelling was a little difficult due to the waves, but overall a very enjoyable experience in Tamarindo
My sister and I booked this trip to do some snorkeling and try kayaking for the first time. Our guide was lovely, giving us clear instruction and staying with us. He was a very competent swimmer and sought out a puffer fish for us to see. He did also find a little shark but it was a bit too far away from the island and the water was choppy so I decided not to follow him. This trip requires quite a bit of strength. Going out was hard but ok, coming back we were battling against the wind and it was really tough. We are generally quite fit. So just be mindful of your swimming and strength abilities. Would probably be easier on less windy days but apparently that level of wind is quite common.
The kayak trip out was gorgeous and easy! The waters can be a bit choppy but the island and snorkeling was still gorgeous! The tour guide was also wonderful!
We kayaked to an island, saw thousands of hermit crabs and huge shells, and then we snorkeled before kayaking back. We saw lots of fish, a sea star, and a lobster. We had a great guide and great time! Takes about 2 hours.
Great day on the island. Just a short kayak ride from the beach. Guide was fantastic - pointing out cool fish, star fish and more.
We have a family of four with two teens. Our tour guide was Joshua, who was outstanding! We had our own private tour with him, and took two double kayaks. He led us to kayak to the island, and then snorkeled in the water around the island with Joshua showing us various wildlife. We saw beautiful fish, see urchins, and starfish. We then walked around the island, which was beautiful and then kayaked back to Tamarindo. This trip was a lot of fun!
WOW! This will definitely replace your workout for the day! It was rather windy for the day which made it that much more difficult. However Joshua was fantastic! He encouraged us all the way out, guided us while snorkeling and walked us around the island. The wind picked up before heading back so Joshua put me in the double kayak with him, and together we towed my friend back to the beach. The snorkeling wasn't the best, but Joshua really made the experience worthwhile.
Probably not the best place to snorkel. The water is pretty choppy and therefore not very clear. We enjoyed just getting out and kayaking to the small island. The guides were friendly, but I wouldn't snorkel again at this location.
The kayaking trip was fun except the weather didn’t cooperate so it wasn’t safe to snorkel. It was fun exploring the island, tide pooling and watching all the hermit crabs. Our guide, Raynaldo, was fun and knowledgeable.
It was a great experience. The kayaks were in great condition and the team was awesome about helping us in and out of the water. There were a good variety of fish and a starfish to see while snorkeling. It was a lovely and more affordable way to spend the morning!
Rinaldo was our guide to this great snorkeling experience at Captain's Island. We kayaked out. It was fairly easy to get there. We have been snorkeling in Key West, Aruba and Maui, but saw fish here that we had not seen in any of those places. Rinaldo took time to prepare our goggles so that the viewing was crystal clear. We had plenty of underwater time to view the sealife. Really enjoyed it!
Beautiful snorkeling. Caught a few fish from shoreline. Rocks were slippery so advise caution when walking on them. Guides were helpful getting us to and from island, and assisted getting out of water.
My cousins and I had such a fun experience snorkeling at Captains island with our tour guide Joshua. He is fun, funny, and knowledgeable about the area. We saw a lot of different types, colors, and sizes of fish, as well as some other sea creatures which we got to interact with. We were well taken care of. The kayak trip to the island was also amazing- fun to kayak in the ocean versus other bodies of water. I highly recommend if you want to snorkel and potentially see a lot of wildlife.
We just kayaked to the small island offshore for snorkeling. Our guide Ronaldo taught us many things about the area and pointed out things we would have missed otherwise. Only 4 stars because the snorkeling there wasn’t great - choppy waters with cross-currents and not a ton of fish or reef or anything like that. But I grew up with world-class snorkeling so maybe I’m biased. I actually got out of the water and explored the island’s tide pools, looking at the millions of hermit crabs and different sea birds and that was more fun for me. The staff at the office and beach were very friendly and put our backpack in a locker and even loaned us a dry bag so we could take our phone and binoculars out to the island safely.
This is a simple tour. The guide met us at our hotel (Diria), we walked a couple hundred yards down the road to their place on the beach. They carried the kayaks down to the water and we paddled across the Captain's Island. The island is not much more than a rock outcropping, you can see it from anywhere on Tamarindo Beach, it's the island beyond the moored boats with a sandy looking beach. It was a windy day and the operator asked if wanted to wait until later in the day to see if it calmed down, we were ready to go so decided to give it a try. It was not a bad paddle across to the beach and the landing area is good. The guide walked us around the island pointing out wild life and view points on shore. I did not expect the snorkeling to be very good as it was quite windy and frankly it didn't look like much of a reef as we paddled over it. To my surprise, it was actually pretty good despite the rough water. A good reef with reasonably clear water and a good variety of fish. The guide found some unique fish, including spider starfish and a puffer fish. The paddle back was a bit difficult as it was pretty much straight into the wind. The guide hooked up a tow rope between the kayaks to help keep us on track. The kayaks are very stable even in fairly rough waters. It took a while, maybe 30 minutes, to get back to shore but it was a good workout. Total time was just over 2 hours. I would do this one again, it would even better under better weather conditions.
