Surf Lesson In Tamarindo: Private And Group

The instructor was nice but I was really disappointed with the overall experience. There is not any sort of actual building - just a tent on the beach. There were no towels to use (even though our reservation said they were provided) and there was not a safe place to leave our belongings while we were in the water. We were told to just leave them under the tent, but many different people were coming and going and nobody was really looking out for them. The entire setup seemed very unprofessional and, for the cost, I would book next time with one of the businesses on the beach with lockers, towels, nicer boards, etc

Before I even took a lesson with Johnny, I watched him surf—and he’s just as impressive as an instructor as he is in the water. I'd recommend him to anyone who is serious about learning. I started with zero experience and ended up take 12–13 private lessons with him. By the end, I was catching waves on my own—and I credit that largely to his teaching approach. In fact, a couple of people ended up hiring him after seeing the progress I was making with him, which says a lot. Johnny will make you work—very Belichick-style—but in the best way. He knew exactly when and how to push me. By the end of the first week, he had me out on bigger waves at Playa Grande. It felt like a big jump, but it helped me progress and it's also cool to try out different waves. Unlike many instructors out there, he doesn’t train you with “beginner-only” techniques you’ll have to unlearn later. He teaches the proper form and pop-up from the start. He also doesn't put students on the supersized boards just to get you standing. Instead, he uses boards that allow you to feel the wave more and understand timing and positioning. It’s a slightly harder learning curve at first, but it is more fun and you progress faster. (Don't worry, your first board is still plenty big.) He downsized my board twice over the 12-13 days. In the water, he’s constantly paying attention and encouraging everyone around him. He’s patient, genuinely invested, and knows when to push and when to hold back. At one point, he told me to take a day off. I was on fire when I came back. Tip: cheaper to book on the beach in person and there is a discount for booking multiple lessons.

Can’t say enough good things about these guys. We did surfing lessons with them 2 days on our trip. Surfing with Andric and Jonathan was just awesome! They are super patient, and they are a great teachers. Jonathan was absolutely fantastic with our youngest child and he had a great time and was probably surfing better than the rest of us. These guys were also very helpful and helping us identify other activities during our stay in Tamarindo. We booked a fishing charter on Andric’s recommendation and had a blast and caught several sailfish! If you are going to Tamarindo and you were interested in surf lessons or various other activities, give these guys your business. You will be very happy that you did.

We had the best time with Blue Wave Surf tours in Tamarindo. We had a two hour private lesson with Johnny and Edgar and it was just the highlight of our trip. We were able to get up and ride the waves right away with their expertise. Very friendly, helpful and supportive, lovely gentlemen. We will most definitely book again when we return. At the end of the lesson we had a massage co-ordinated on the beach and it was just the best ending to a great morning. Highly recommend.

Amazing experience with Andric. Awesome instructor. We signed up for a semi private lesson but ended up having a full private lesson because no one else showed up. My girlfriend had no prior experience with any kind of water sports and Andric gave her the confidence and the tips to be fully standing and surfing by the end of the lesson. Great conversation, advice and in my opinion under priced for what he offers. Great lesson would 100% use again if we came back.

Blue wave surf was awesome. My daughter and I have had many surf lessons around the world, and Jonathon (aka Jonnie) is by far the best. Technically superior, and super friendly, and had us up on thee board surfing Was so good.

I did this lesson by myself, never having surfed before and it was amazing. The instructor was so helpful and patient. He ensured I was safe and having fun the whole time. Would recommend!

Gustavo is an amazing instructor! Makes you feel very confident and comfortable when learning how to surf for the first time. Would recommend! Bring a towel and some sunscreen, shirts are provided.

Jonathan my coach/hermano was great teacher and attentive, it wasn’t my first time surfing but I definitely got better, would recommend!

Our kids - twin 12 yr olds and a 10 yr old - had a great time learning to surf. Edgar and Jonathan were patient and enthusiastic instructors. The fresh coconut at the end of the lesson was a delicious surprise. The experience was so good we are trying to carve out some time during our remaining time here to go again before we leave.

Edgar and John were incredible! They were funny and super helpful even when I didn’t follow their instructions and fell over lol. Was able to surf multiple waves as a first timer. Andric hurt his ankle so he wasn’t able to assist but he was still on the sidelines cheering us on. The real coconuts at the end were definitely a highlight. This was the best part of our trip!

This was one of my favorite experiences in Costa Rica. I never surfed before and my guide made it easy to learn. So much fun!

Great experience with blue whale surf!! Location was easy to find and it was such a productive 2 hours! Edwin was a great surf instructor. Was my 3rd time surfing and I got up multiple times. I would recommend!

Andric was the perfect teacher - super knowledgeable and encouraging. He made the entire lesson so much fun. I was a little nervous being an uncoordinated, out of shape, middle aged gal, but he made it easy. He’s very chill and patient. He got me up on the board right away and I had a blast. I HIGHLY recommend booking with these guys! They’re patient, fun, and make the whole experience enjoyable. I had never surfed before, but thanks to their guidance I was standing up on almost every wave. My husband and I booked a private lesson and enjoyed every second. We would have booked another lesson if our schedule had allowed it!

So so so AWESOME. Me and my wife booked a surf lesson through Andric. We were riding waves in less then 30 minutes in! We had Edwin as our teacher and he was really patient while hyping us up when we did good. Such good vibes with them!

As an intermediate long boarder, it's been a while since I surfing every day, the coach took me to the right side of the beach where the waves are more suitable for experienced surfer, and told me every time when to paddle and which wave is better to catch, and should I turn left or right, which is the things I really needed. Overall, it's a really nice surfing lesson, but it would be better if they could provide the photos(like have someone took photos for us, cause the photographer on the beach couldn't take photos of me because I am too far from the centre of the beach....😭😭🥺)

We had a great time! We opted for private lessons so there was an instructor for each of us. They taught us the basics and got us in the water right away. They are so patient and very professional.

Excellent surf lessons for our teen sons.. they had 3 lessons with Jonathan.. he took them from being beginners to standing up in no time.. by day 3 they had progressed on to shorter boards and catching lots of waves.. Jonathan was friendly, fun and an excellent teacher. Andric who runs the surf school was also very friendly and let me sit on their sun loungers to watch the lessons.. and looked after our stuff so I could swim in the ocean and take photos! Boys were given a coconut to drink at the end of each lesson. Totally recommend this company.. thank you Blue Wave surf!

These guys were awesome. Went with a family of four and everyone was able to get up and surf within the first 30 minutes. We had a six-year-old, a nine-year-old plus mom and dad. They were great with the kids, and very patient with the whole group. Highly recommend!

Awesome surf instructor! Waves were perfect. Apparently this beach is known for consistently easy waves. Lots of fun!

I booked this for my 20 year old daughter and she had a great time. She has surfed 5-6 times over the years so not too experienced but the waves were just right. She loved the lesson being 1-2-1 and the water being so warm so that no wetsuit was needed. The surfing people were really friendly and offered me a lounger to sit and watch and I could leave the bags safely with them and go and take videos and photos of her. They very kindly gave both of us a coconut too. Highly recommended.

My 11 yr old son and I had a lesson with Jonathan. Jonathan is a great instructor. We got off to a slow start, but Jonathan was patient with us and we eventually caught a bunch of waves. My son appreciated the coach tips that Jonathan gave to him to help him stay up on his board. I was finally able to catch a decent wave on my own with assistance! We got some cold freshing fruit drinks after our lesson which was a great end to our lesson!! Would highly recommend Jonathan. My son and I learned a lot from Jonathan.

5 star outfit. Personal attention and great instruction. Have tried surfing a few times before but Johnny was the first to help me catch my first waves. Took the lesson with my daughter and she had success too. They are located right on the beach which was also nice. Thanks!

Johanne was the best instructor, my son and I both were able to stand on the board and make a go of surfing. The ocean was incredible - we opted for the massage after and wow!!! Worth it!! Thank you so much, highly recommend!!!

It was absolutely amazing! I never thought I would be able to surf but Andre and Pablo were great. They explained everything clearly, made sure I understood what to do and Pablo and I went to the water. I was able to ride the wave during my first class! What a rush! I ended up having three lessons with Pablo - the last one was the best! Sunset and catamarans behind me and I was riding the waves to the shore❤️🤙 Amazing!

What an amazing experience! Andric and his crew were absolutely incredible! Our family of 4, really were treated to a fabulous morning of surfing. This was our first day of surfing, we had great instructors and we hope to be back sometime to do this again. The crew definitely went above and beyond to make this a very memorable experience. So much fun! First, I have to say that I booked the wrong date by accident and immediately messaged the company to ask to change the date. Even though it was less than 24 hours away, the guys were super accommodating and understanding. We had no problem finding them on the beach and they got my husband and 13 year old daughter all set up and did a dry land instruction. It must have been good, because my daughter got up and rode a wave in on her very first try! After the surfing was done, my husband got a refreshing coconut water and my daughter got a strawberry smoothie. Overall, both said it was an excellent experience!!

Johnny and Andric were fantastic teachers! My family had never tried surfing before and we had a great time learning from them. They were calm and clear with instructions.

Had a great experience! My instructor Edwin was great. I was a bit nervous but he was very nice and patient. I Stood up on the board on my third try and kept going for 2 hours. By the end of the lesson I felt confident and pleased with myself for trying something new and actually learned how to surf, thanks to Edwin! Great value and so much fun. I think this is the best place to learn. Everyone from the crew was welcoming and very nice. Would definitely recommend!

Andric and his crew are fantastic! We are here on our sons Make a Wish trip and took a surf lesson that turned out to be the highlight of our trip. My son loved it (we all did :)) and out surfed us all while our instructor encouraged and stayed with him in the water until he was surfed out! We had an absolutely incredible time with Johnny and Paulo. I’m a 45 year old mom with 7 and 9 year old boys. They had us standing up on the boards within the first 5 minutes of getting in the water. They were super encouraging and helpful. The boys were smiling from ear to ear. Would definitely recommend Andric’s team for anyone wanting to learn to surf. And our lesson ended with fresh coconut water in coconuts.

We had an absolutely wonderful time, the whole team was incredible. Our group was all relatively novice, with some having minimal surfing experience and others none at all, and we all left feeling much more comfortable on a board. Everyone got up without trouble, and all the instructors made it easy and fun to do so. We'd highly recommend! Also you get a free drink at the end, can't complain

My best friend and I booked these surf lessons for our girls trip to Tamarindo, and it was one of the highlights of our trip! We had two young men helping us with our lesson and they were both amazing! They were knowledgeable and incredibly supportive. I was really struggling to figure out how to get up but the instructor was genuinely so kind and helpful. You could tell he wanted to see me succeed and when I was finally able to stand up on a wave, I turned around to see him cheering! The young men who run this surf business are truly the best and I would recommend this experience to anyone!

Decided last minute try surf lessons on my last full day in CR. A quick google pulled up this business on trip advisor and all the reviews talked about how positive, kind and patient the instructor was. I immediately booked a lesson and I’m so glad I did. Andric was patient and kind while he instructed me, both on shore and in the water. He made sure I felt confident in each step before my first attempt. Andric has a very comforting and easy energy that allowed me to step out of my comfort zone and really try without fear of looking silly. He laughed WITH me when I fell and celebrated when I finally costed all the way in. I ended up asking to book an extra hour because I was having so much fun. Next time I’m in CR, this will be my first stop.

We had such an incredible time learning how to surf with Andric! My 10 year old son and I decided last minute to book a surf lesson and found Andric on Trip Advisor with excellent reviews. They are accurate. He was very patient and thorough with the instructions before taking us on the water. Through the entire lesson he was great at ensuring we were on the right waves at the right time so we had the best chance of riding one. My son was up on his 2nd try and never looked back… surfed for 2 hours! I was also successful though not quite as good as my son. The whole experience was perfect! Highly recommend Andric for anyone looking to experience this magical sport.

We were a group of 5, and we all had little or zero surfing experience. Andric gave clear step by step instructions on land first with lots of feedback and ensured everyone was ready before going in the water. In the water we were split into two groups and received individual attention. We were all able to stand up during the lesson. Very happy with the experience. Would recommend.

Andric is that dude!!! My private lesson was dope and he had me standing up riding waves almost right away. I appreciated the time he took working on form and technique on the beach to make the most of the time in the water. He even offered to let me come back to borrow the boogie board he had with his gear which I appreciated. There’s so much value in this experience and one of my favorite memories from my trip!

The instructor was awesome and was able to adjust to my needs as a beginner but not a complete beginner.

Highly recommend! Two hours of surfing, mostly in the water, with constant feedback for improvement! I stood up 95% of the time and I don’t think I would have been able to without the emphasis on practice on land and the support given in the water!

I had a really hard time navigating getting there from where I was coming from and was terribly late. Andric still accommodated me. I traveled alone and I felt very safe. He lets you progress at your own pace. He also made some local recommendations for me to explore and I enjoyed myself.
