About Activity
For eco-tourist lovers, The Curú Wildlife Refuge is considered one of the best places in Costa Rica to observe a wide variety of wildlife.
This tropical paradise, combines sustainable agriculture and forest management with the protection of five ecological habitats including, tropical dry forest, rivers, hidden beaches, mangrove swamps and marine ecosystems.
The refuge is located on Costa Rica’s southern Nicoya Peninsula, near Paquera Village and one of the reason for its high biodiversity is that Curú connects to the Biological Wildlife Corridor of the Nicoya Peninsula allowing animals to migrate the peninsula’s mountainous interiors through a heavily forested part with giant trees.
Curú means Guanacaste Tree in the native Chorotega tribe and it has a particular history, Schutt family purchased the land in 1933 and concerned about the human impact on nature, they for the “Protected Forest” status for the remaining forest and mangroves, stablishing as private Wild Life Reserve in 1983.
The Hacienda covers 1,496 hectares; 75% are protected forest (75%), 20% are for grazing and agriculture, and 5% contains the Curú National Wildlife Refuge being one of the smallest sanctuaries in Costa Rica.
Despite its small size, the area has been used as a sustainable development project with selective timber harvesting, agriculture, cattle grazing and animal conservation and sustainable activities.
After been picked up from Isla Chiquita, you will be travelling for approximately 30 minutes (boat and land transportation) to main entrance of the shelter and continue a ballast trail to the tickets booth.
The wildlife refuge has different trails and hiking difficulty ranges from tame to intense, the professional naturalistic guide will select the one as per your abilities and preferences. The most recommended trail has 2 km and will lead you mangroves and to the lookout point where you will be amazed with the panoramic views.
More than 232 bird species, 78 kinds of mammals, 87 types of reptiles, 25 amphibian species, and 500 different plants, inhabit in this area and along the 3 hours hike, the guide will be very attentive to show you the interactions between some of these species and the ecosystems.
Mangroves swamps is one of the preferred spots for animals. All five of Costa Rica’s mangrove species are represented in Curú and an immense number of small organisms live in the nutrient-rich mud of these swamps, which attract many species of fish and flocks of water birds to feed.
