Playa Grande Surf Lessons On A Secluded Beach

I have been surfing about 5 times in the last 15 years. Each time I get a beginner's class as a refresher. I have had classes in Bali and Hawaii and I can say hands down this was the best instructor and class I've ever taken. The class was with Johel and with his guidance I was up on the surf board on the first try and catching my own waves by the end of the 2 hour class. Johel was very kind and patient throughout. I highly recommend taking classes with mojo surfing!

We had the absolute best time! Our instructor was amazing and had all of us up and riding multiple waves. One person in our group didn’t want to surf, and they made sure she was comfortable with a nice chair in the shade so she could still enjoy the experience with us. And you HAVE to try the banana bread—it might honestly be the best you’ll ever have! Such a fun experience from start to finish. Highly recommend booking with Mojo Surf!

We were blown away by how quickly us 4 novice surfers (never ever surfed) stood up on our surf boards. We had an amazing time learning to surf. Joelle and Tim explained each step so well. Out of the two week holiday our daughter's favourite activity was surfing with Mojo surf Adventures. Tim took so many amazing photos will can show as evidence and keep sake memories of our experience. I would 100 percent recommend booking with Mojo Surf at Playa Grande.

This was a fantastic experience for our family. The instructors were patient, kind and wanted all of us to succeed and we did. We caught waves, enjoyed the sun, surf and company of the entire Mojo team. They took photos and even shared delicious banana bread. Our kids are 12 & 14 and loved their lesson and want to go back tomorrow and it was so great we may just do that. Instructors were out in the water with the kids and even showed off a few of their surfing tricks.

Had a wonderful time as a family of five. Even those that were nervous had a great time and felt safe. Price was more than fair as we had a longer experience than some other other companies. We traveled from Tamarindo and are glad we were able to experience a quieter setting. There were on a few families and wonderful instructors. The owners went above and beyond for us. They supplied water, pineapple and homemade banana bread (which was safe for our food allergy). We love meeting people and trying new things - this was a great time!

We first did surf lessons with Mojo back in Nov 2023 and loved it so much, we decided to do it again with them this past week. Tim and his team are awesome! The instructors are very patient and encouraging. The beach at Playa Grande is beautiful and the waves perfect for both beginners and more experienced surfers. They provided us with rash guards, fresh pineapple, homemade banana bread and water. This time we were staying about 90 min away up on the Papagayo Peninsula - Tim made arrangements for a driver to pick us up for the journey to Playa Grande. The driver, Jonathon was great - he waited for us to do our lesson, then took us to Tamarindo for a few hours where we could grab lunch and do some shopping before driving us back to our hotel. Highly Recommend! Amazing way to spend the day in Costa Rica!

Expert lessons with fine tuning. Whole family had a blast. Tim and company are so friendly and supportive. We caught wave after wave after wave. No crowd. You won't find a better outfit than this.

Highly, highly recommend Mojo Surf Adventures! Easy to book, so friendly and accommodating, and even got this old lady up on a board! Tim greeted us on the beach and immediately made us all feel at ease. Honestly, it was a terrific experience start to finish.

We had the most amazing time on this surfing experience. It was our first time and all five of us were able to get up on the board! All of the instructors were kind, patient, and they made our day so fun. After 45 minutes, we stopped for a break with cold water, fresh pineapple, and the best homemade banana bread we have ever had. We even got photos to help us remember the day forever. Would definitely recommend mojo for your next surfing adventure!

Overall positive experience--good instructors, easy to book, on time, reasonable pricing. My kids really enjoyed themselves. That said, one issue--and source of frustration--is that the owner made a big deal of the fact that pictures are included and in fact he spent most of the time taking pictures rather than assisting the instructors (and due to the large group size, they definitely could have used some help). Yet despite numerous efforts to contact him for the pictures, I have yet to receive a single reply. At this point I assume I'll never receive the photos and my kids are really disappointed about that. While of course the photos are secondary to the surf lessons themselves, its unprofessional to promise them but not deliver on that promise (and to ignore my messages altogether)--plus its perplexing why he would spend the whole time taking pictures he doesn't intend to distribute.

We had such a wonderful experience with Mojo! Communication was excellent, ease of location/parking, and great equipment. Our instructor Dego was great at teaching, guiding and helping us. The beach is clean, beautiful and warm. We had never surfed before and were able to really gain the full experience and check of a once and a life time bucket list adventure.

Our family of 4 beginners took a lesson together. Tim was really great with his communication, including changing our time to ensure we had more favorable waves for us beginners! He also had good overall Costa Rica information. And the homemade banana bread was a perfect treat for our break! Daigo was an excellent instructor- very patient and encouraging. He accommodated us just where we were, and we all got up at least once (even this middle aged mom)! Thanks for a great trip!

Our family really enjoyed the morning surfing with Mojo Surf Adventures. The guides were always with us and there was never a moment that I was worried for our safety. The owners were there to give us tips and knowledge of the area, and provided treats and water during our break. Tim was very attentive with his communication and updating us on changes with time due to surfing conditions. Thank you and we recommend this to anyone who wants to try surfing!

Surfing was awesome! Tim was a very knowledgable coach and so was Johul. They helped make the experience so much fun and they really want you to do well. There is pineapple and banana bread too which is a plus.

Great place to lean surfing! My friend and I decided to try surfing for the first time while visiting and Tim and his crew were great! After a quick demo and lesson we jumped right into the water and were up on our boards in no time. Our instructor was encouraging and quick to show us how to improve so we could stand on the boards longer. As some other reviews mentioned Playa Grande is a much better area to lean how to surf, far few crowds compared to Tamarindo which made the experience a lot more enjoyable. Tim and his crew always made sure we were safe and having an awesome time! Highly recommend to anyone coming to Costa Rica

We had a fun and successful surf lesson with Tim and Joelle. Almost all of us were able to get up during our first few tries. They were very patient and helpful in us getting the most out of our time. The banana bread, pineapple and ice water was also a nice treat halfway through!

We had a blast surfing with Tim and Joel! They picked us up and we had great conversation on the way to the beach. We had awesome instruction, caught some waves and enjoyed more great conversation on the way back to our place. This was a great addition to our Costa Rica experience. We will be back!!!

I normally SUP and have always wanted to surf a real wave in Costa Rica. Tim and his coach team were awesome. I got up several times! They took a bunch of photos I can’t wait to see -(A bit wider of a board and making sure they are not slick would be our only ask. ) absolutely loved it! Tim and the local instructors were fabulous, they spent the time to dry land train our 3 girls then spent the next 2 hours in the water with them. What a great experience

We went as a large group and 2 group sessions with Tim and his team. Every team member was very friendly and attentive most important gave the very clear and directly instruction to a lots of first time surfers. And snack was the high light of the day! Pineapple was super delicious! Our kids had a great time! The beach was stunning!

The boys had an amazing time. Tim and Joelle were fantastic and got the boys up in no time it’s truly an experience they will never forget.

Had a great time with Mojo surf adventures. These guys are top notch. My 14 year old daughter and I who were brand new to surfing were able to learn. The beach was very secluded and it felt like we had it to ourselves. The waves were not big so it was perfect for us newbies but if you were looking for bigger waves they were right down the shore. Tim the owner set everything up he was super easy to deal with provided the boards and rash guards along with a mid lesson snack, His wife’s banana bread is amazing!! Dalgo our instructor was super patient, knowledgeable and had us surfing in no time. If you’re looking to learn how to surf this is it!!!

I needed a refresher and my wife was a beginner. Tim and Johel were great! Safety first, followed by some fun chill vibes with a fresh-cut pineapple and homemade banana-bread break between sessions. Got some great photos as well. Wished we had started our vacation with them as they had loads of good advice re: local geography and food etc.

We had the absolute best time surfing with Tim and his team through Mojo Surf Adventures. We are a family of 4 (adults mid 40s and two sons 10+12). 3/4 of us had done lessons before. The lessons were superb. Everyone got up. Tim and his wife were exceptional hosts with great snacks to keep us going. Would 100% recommend this activity. It was a highlight of our trip and the pictures provided afterwards will help us keep the memory alive!

Very fun! Tim and his surf instructors were fun and helpful. It was my first time surfing and they helped me get up successfully. My girlfriend had surfed before and said this was the best class she’s done. The waves were big enough to consistently catch a surf but not too big that a beginner didn’t stand a chance. I think everyone in our class of 9 got up. The break in between sessions was nice to catch your breath and enjoy some pineapple and homemade banana bread. Afterwards we wished we could surf every day and discussed scheduling another session, but ran out of time in our trip. Next time we visit Costa Rica! Would recommend!

Tim, MJ and their instructors provided fun and SUCCESSFUL surf lessons on the beautiful beach of Playa Grande. Complete with a yummy snack break of fresh pineapple and homemade banana bread. They are a lovely couple who exude Pura Vida. It was a fun family excursion. Look no further!

Tim and MJ provided transportation and from my hotel. The safety lesson on the beach was smart and useful. Group sizes were small enough to give time to catch my breath before getting another turn. Dago gave good instructions as did adjacent teachers. They were good with the kids in my group as well as with me. MJ and Tim took photos from the shoreline. We had fresh pineapple and delicious homemade banana bread MJ makes herself during our break and Dago climbed a coconut tree and tore them open with his bare hands for the group to try before we returned to the ocean to practice again. I will sleep great tonight and be a little sore tomorrow.

I had a private lesson with Joel. He was patient and very helpful as I learned how to surf. MJ’s banana bread was great too. Highly recommend this activity for anyone remotely interested in learning how to surf. Lovely and easy to find location.

Owners, Tim and MJ, are excellent at what they do and they have a five star rating for a good reason. All of the instructors were super. William incredibly patient and was an exceptional teacher. We share already planning our next lesson with mojo. I can’t say enough good things about our experience.

This is the team to go to if you want a good experience! My wife was having some trouble getting past the break and getting hit by some of the waves and Tim the owner jumped right in next to his instructors to help assuage her fears and she had an amazing experience. The waves were perfect for us. The price was also very reasonable

Highly recommend Mojo Surf, their instructors were very patient and accommodating for our group as we had never surfed before. Their surf location on Playa Grande is a much quieter beach which is perfect for beginners. Water and delicious snacks were provided halfway through the lesson. If you want to have a ton of fun don’t hesitate to book with Mojo!

This was my 3rd lesson ever (first in Costa Rica) and the first time I was able to get up more than a few times. The instructors care and are eager to help you with the technique but also care that you have a blast out there! The fresh pineapple and banana bread were also a nice treat. The place to surf is away from the busy crowds. I can't recommend this group enough. I hope to be back one day :)
