We stayed at SantaRena Hotel in Las Catalinas, and for the price, it offers excellent value. The amenities are very good, and the beach access is amazing. The hotel has a very laid-back atmosphere, is beautifully designed, and the rooms are well soundproofed, which really matters when you want a good night’s sleep. We didn’t get the best view since our room was on the ground floor, but honestly, we didn’t mind it. An ocean-view room would have been nice, so maybe next time. There are many great restaurants within walking distance, and the rooftop pool has an incredible view, making it the perfect place to relax. The staff throughout the property were amazing. A special thank you to Mario, who welcomed us when we arrived and whom we ran into several times during our stay. He was always friendly, helpful, and a great host. I highly recommend Santa Rena Hotel. There are so many things to do in Las Catalinas, whether you want to relax or stay active. We will definitely be back!

Highly recommend Santarena Hotel at Las Catalinas. We enjoyed everything about our visit, their rooms are spacious and elegantly decorated. The staff was friendly, welcoming and polite. The hotel restaurant food and drinks were excellent. Everything is in walking distance and there are plenty of places to grab a bit to eat, coffee or plan activities. The community concierge provides a variety of activities which they arrange for you.
Las Catalinas is an artificial beach resort modeled to look like a Mediterranean villa with none of the charm and devoid of Costa Rican culture. It is a tourist trap with the emphasis on ‘Trap’. There are no competing enterprises within an hour of the area and the entire town works off a price collusion model. While the beach is nice it offers no more than other beaches in Costa Rica. I highly recommend you look to other locations before booking a stay in this hotel/resort.
Absolutely amazing! Santarena Hotel, and the surrounding Las Catalinas area, was a restorative and luxury experience. The rooms are beautiful! The high ceilings, premium linens, incredible views dropped into relaxation right from the start. The ocean view rooms are absolutely worth the upgrade - the view is stunning! ' There are many restaurants within walking distance. This is a small community, not just a hotel and you can feel the sense of connectedness from the start. The beach and sunsets will take your breath away. The Center of Joy (wellness center) is so special. The massage rooms are lined with Himalayan salt walls, and there is a sound room dedicated to sound healing. The staff are incredibly generous, kind, and helpful. A must stay!
As someone who regularly stays at high-end properties, I chose Santarena expecting a refined, seamless experience aligned with the standards of boutique luxury hospitality. The hotel itself is beautiful. The architecture, the neutral palette, and the rooftop atmosphere are all aesthetically pleasing and very “Instagram-worthy.” The location in Las Catalinas is charming and walkable. From a design perspective, it absolutely delivers. However, the experience did not match the visual promise. When I booked, I specifically informed the concierge that I planned to take photos with my professional camera during my stay. Nothing was mentioned about restrictions. Today, while calmly walking around the property taking photos, I was followed by a security guard who informed me that professional cameras were not allowed. Meanwhile, guests around me were freely taking photos with their phones. The inconsistency was uncomfortable. Being followed and stopped felt unnecessary and, frankly, embarrassing. When I brought this to the hotel’s attention, I was told that cameras are not allowed — yet there are no visible signs stating this policy, and no one communicated it to me prior to arrival, despite my transparency about my plans. Clear communication upfront would have avoided the situation entirely. Additionally, the air conditioning in my room did not function properly. I called to request assistance, but no one came to address the issue. For a property positioned at this level, basic comfort and timely service should be non-negotiable. In summary: • Beautiful design and location. • Disappointing communication regarding photography policies. • Uncomfortable interaction with security. • AC issue not resolved despite requesting help. Luxury is not only about aesthetics — it is about service, clarity, and how guests are made to feel. Unfortunately, this stay did not meet the standards I am accustomed to.
