Itinerary
We'll journey through Tonala's heart, experiencing the vibrant market, historic parish, and lively main square, gaining a glimpse into the authentic lifestyle of a traditional working-class neighborhood. Then, we'll visit city hall to gain insights into Tonala's historical significance and learn about the indigenous cultures that have shaped its identity. Finally, we’ll visit the workshop and house of the Bernabe family to admire one of the most refined ceramic techniques in the world: barro petatillo.
We'll wander along an enchanting pedestrian-only avenue lined with magnificent 19th-century mansions now transformed into stylish boutiques, art galleries, museums, and inviting restaurants. We'll have the opportunity to admire the works of renowned local artists, including Sergio Bustamente, Agustín Parra, and Rodo Padilla, at their respective art galleries. We'll conclude our day with a sumptuous lunch at the breathtaking Casa Luna, a restaurant adorned with Tlaquepaque's finest crafts and hailed as one of Mexico's most beautiful. Alternatively, we can experience the local food scene by having lunch at the municipal market, where we can savor traditional dishes prepared by local vendors. Since this is a private tour, we can tailor the experience to your interests, whether that’s food, architecture, art, history, or a combination of everything. At any point, we can pause for coffee, craft beer, tequila or mezcal cocktails, or grab a bite from street stands.

My husband and I enjoyed our private tour with Diego. We stopped for an authentic breakfast in Tonala before touring the city and stopping at the Bernabé Family shop. The most amazing handmade, hand painted ceramics I have ever seen. Absolutely beautiful! Next, we went to Tlaquepaque where we toured the city and stopped for a traditional drink and snack and did a little shopping. Diego did a great job at explaining some of the important aspects and history of each town. Overall, a very enjoyable experience.
Diego is an amazing tour guide with a wealth of knowledge on the history of Tonala and Tlaquepaque. Throughout the tour, Diego provides key facts and summaries of history that add to the experience of getting to know the daily life of each region. Diego also makes time to introduce you to some local dishes and treats.
Diego met us right at our hotel and handled all the logistics seamlessly. Our first stop was Tonala, where we were able to explore the local community in a way that felt authentic and unhurried. Diego shared great insights into the town’s history and the local artisan culture. One of the highlights was visiting Bernabé Ceramics—truly one of the most impressive artist workshops I've ever seen. From there, we continued on to Tlaquepaque, where Diego curated a perfect balance of art and culture. We explored beautiful galleries and shops, had a fantastic lunch at one of the most stunning restaurants in the area (Casa Luna). What really stood out was how thoughtful and adaptable Diego was throughout the day—he paid attention to what we enjoyed and adjusted the experience in real time to make it even better. Highly recommend this tour for anyone looking for a more personalized, immersive experience of the region.
Diego was fantastic! He was so knowledgeable and friendly. We loved the entire experience from the vehicle to the area we toured to the restaurant we had our lunch. Would recommend to our friends and family.
It’s a great experience to see the Mexican cultura and heritage. Diego was simply amazing. His knowledge due to his toursim and history studies takes this tour to another level.
Diego is a knowledgeable and enthusiastic guide, you can tell he loves his work and the cities/people he introduces you too. I appreciated Diego modifying this tour so i could spend the most of our time in Tonala. I was suprised and excited to visit Talleres Bernabe. The Bernabe Family are world class artisans. I had the best tacos at Felipes as well. Fantastic experience!
Diego was a knowledgeable and patient guide for our Tonala and Tlaquepaque tour. Visited the renowned Tonala pottery workshop of a respected artisan family with generations of tradition. In Tlaquepaque, impressed by the gallery showcasing Sergio Bustamante’s work. Diego’s food recommendations were great. Highly recommend!
We booked a Tlaquepaque and Tonala tour with Diego as he has a lot of really good reviews and he absolutely deserves all of them! He’s very knowledgeable, super accommodating and super nice guy, and very passionate about his work. The tour is personal and customized, and he fulfilled all special requests we had. Highly recommended!
I thoroughly enjoy the tour with Diego, not only he showed his great knowledge, insights and professionalism, but also his passion towards his hometown. We had great conversation throughout the tour with topic varies from the Mexican politics, social issues and local cultures. Diego’s flexible on handling the tour, for instance, the Bernabe Workshop was not open on that day, Diego was quick to suggest alternate activities or attractions to open my eyes and deepen my understanding towards the local communities and neighborhoods. In addition, Diego’s recommendations on the food places were legit. The street foods and local shops suggested by Diego provide the warm, fresh and reasonable-priced foods which you won’t find in tourist-trap areas. Last but not least, we took the metro to go back to the centro area where Diego accompanied me to Hospicio Cabañas even though it’s not part of the tour package. In conclusion, if you ever happen to be in Guadalajara, choose Diego and you won’t regret it. P/S: Diego is also a good photographer who helps travelers to take tons of great photos.
After reading reviews about this excursion, we decided to book this with Diego Hannon and we could not have been more pleased. He knows so much about the people and customs of this area He was very attentive to our needs and we enjoyed spending the day with him. We had a great lunch and saw so many local artisans which is what we like to do in new places. If you are in Guadalajara you must do this. You will not regret it.
Diego is a highly knowledgeable guide and this was a great tour. The only thing we would change is to spend a bit more time exploring Tonalá and less time at the artisan workshop. We later returned to further explore Tonalá on our own. Overall this is definitely a worthwhile excursion.
We were in Guadalajara for a few days and booked several tours. Two of our tours were with Diego Hannon. Diego has studied Mexican history extensively and is still in school expanding his knowledge. Diego is a top notch tour guide. He met us at our Airbnb and we began our tour. First stop of the day was in Tonala, and Diego recommended a delicious restaurant as our first stop. Tonala is known for their world renowned pottery. We visited the Jose Bernabe studio and we were given given a private tour and demonstration by one of the Bernabe brothers. We also met an indigenous herbalist with extensive knowledge of medicinal plants. Our tour proceeded to Tlaquepaque, a beautiful city with lots of unique shops...Overall, our day was memorable and we would highly recommend this tour. We also recommend Diego Hannon as a tour guide.
Diego was the best ,from the moment i made my reservation he reached out to me , to let me know he was going to be my guide, he went above and beyond. My children and i had an awsome tour, Highly satisfied with his service
We had a fantastic day on our private tour of Tonalá and Tlaquepaque with Diego, who was really a top-notch guide. Besides being especially accommodating and a super nice guy, he’s very well educated and has a deep knowledge of the entire area, including local history, as well as the history of Mexico and the world. We really appreciated this knowledge and enjoyed talking with him and learning all sorts of interesting details. We were able to experience a variety of places that we would not have known about without our tour with Diego. Some of the artists and artwork he exposed us to were unique and unparalleled. Our tour was in Spanish, but because Diego has lived or spent time in the U.S., Canada and New Zealand, his English language skills are excellent. I really can’t offer any higher recommendation.
Diego offers a full service tour of two very charming, but different towns within the city limits of Guadalajara. Knowledgeable about the history of the area, but also with connection to high-end microbreweries and hole in the wall taco joints, he makes sure there’s something for everyone. The tour is personal and customized to your preferences, highly worthwhile!
Diego was extremely knowledgeable. Went above and beyond to ensure my wife and I had a great time. It’s very evident he is passionate about what he does. He know the towns, community, and people like the back of his hand. He not only gave us a great tour but also shared with us his great knowledge of the area.
Diego was very knowledgeable and kind. This tour was so fun and learning about the towns from a local perspective was great. I would highly recommend this tour or any of the other tours that Diego offers as he really knows his stuff and will give you recommendations as well!
I was traveling to Guadalajara alone for vacation. I researched a number of tour guides and experiences. Based on the reviews, I settled on Diego Cannon. As soon as I made the reservation, he reached out and thank me for purchasing tour. When I arrived in Guadalajara, my bags were lost. Diego went out of his way to help me get the essential toiletry items I needed while my bags were being found and delivered to the hotel. As for the tour itself, Diego was extremely nice and knowledgeable. He made the trip very lovely and went above and beyond to make my time in Guadalajara enjoyable and fascinating. Diego had connections in the towns of Tlaquepaque and Tonala, where I met famous artisans who explained and then demonstrated their craft. I highly recommend Diego Hannon for any person or family traveling to Guadalajara. He is one of the best
Everything about this day was fantastic! Especially enjoyed meeting the Bernabé brothers and learning about their process. So much to see and appreciate in both towns!
Diego’s knowledge regarding the indigenous people of the Guadalajara region and how it has changed due to world influences was amazing.
Awesome experience provided by Diego’s knowledge and contacts. If it wasn’t for him, we probably would of never heard of Galería Bernabé (José Bernabé C. e Hijos). He not only took us there but also got us a private tour of their workshop hosted by one of the owners . We ate some food with flavors like no other thanks to him. I’m not much for words but I know I will recommend Diego to friends, family and coworkers. We would of not seen all those places in such a short time on our own. We would of been lost. Thanks Diego.
I had an amazing time with Diego on this tour of Tonalá and Tlaquepaque - it was a fascinating look at two of Guadalajara's most interesting neighborhoods. We visited historical sites, markets, and galleries featuring beautiful artwork and crafts. Diego is great company 1-1 and super knowledgeable - I recommend the tour very highly. Excellent food along the way!
Diego was so knowledgeable and friendly (with great stories)! He accommodated our requests and was enthusiastic about the area’s history as well as its current events. Our group had a great time with him and truly recommend this tour!
Diego was a fabulous tour guide whose passionate about preserving the culture heritage of Mexico. His tour emphasizes Mexican artisans both known and unknown. Prepare to be amazed.
Diego brought Tlaquepaque and Tonala to life for us. He was so knowledgeable about the history and the food. It’s obvious how much he loves both places. The ceramic shop tour and seeing the Bernabe family painting their gorgeous ceramics was an added bonus. We highly recommend this tour. Diego was one of our favorite tour guides ever. A great blend of facts and fun!!!
The trip was filled with culture and history. It made it even more enjoyable how passionate and knowledgeable he was. You could feel the pride he felt. Just awesome
From start to finish, my parents and I thoroughly enjoyed the Tonala and Tlaquepaque tour with Diego. I booked the tour for Easter Sunday. Diego had reached out to me soon after making my reservation to inform me that there was a chance that the pottery workshop may be closed. We appreciated the transparency and even though it was closed, there was plenty to see in Tonala. We got to shop a bit in the market (the tianguis is open on Sundays) and checkout the churches. Next we went to Tlaquepaque and again got there at just the right time. We were able to take a picture with the sign of Tlaquepaque with no wait. We highly recommend starting your tour at 9am in order to avoid crowds and the afternoon heat. We also got to visit galleries that had we walked through the boulevard by ourselves, we wouldn’t have thought to enter. My parents were happy to see the artwork and especially the ones from Agustin Parra who Diego informed us, had made chairs for three popes. Diego taught us a lot about the culture and history throughout our walks. We wouldn’t have had nearly the same experience had we walked through the market by ourselves. Truly, all three of us highly recommend Diego. He has a wealth of knowledge and is very personable. Our visit to Tonala and Tlaquepaque wouldn’t have been the same without him.
Diego is an excellent tour guide and this was a fantastic way to get a taste of both Tonala and Tlaquepaque. We visited markets, tasted food, saw amazing ceramics in galleries, studios and museums, shopped for high quality locally made items and learned a lot about both communities. Highly recommend Diego and this tour.
It was an eye opening experience and gave me a real insight to the culture in Tlaquepaque and Tonalá.
I’m very lucky to find this unique shopping and art tour in Guadalajara. Diego is very knowledgeable about the history of the town and and art. The town of Tanola is a shopping paradise. You can find accessories, house decorations with a variety of materials and delicious local foods for a very low price. He also introduced me to a local pottery workhouse where I saw the workshop in use. This was really priceless experience for me. I enjoyed the live Mariachi music at lunch in Tlaquepaque and enjoyed the many art galleries as well. Diego truly made my day visiting Guadalajara. I highly recommend this tour. I guarantee that you will have great time with Diego.
We had this tour with Diego and from the start he was extremely friendly, very knowledgeable about everything he showed us and an excellent guide. He was very aware of my mom who has trouble walking, all at our own pace and completely happy with the service. Fully recommended if you have the opportunity, it is completely worth it.
The experience of knowing the ceramic workshop of the Barnabas family was incredible, we really enjoyed knowing up close the process of creating these crafts. Tlaquepaque was also a destination we loved, we enjoyed the whole tour. Without a doubt the experience would not have been the same without Diego, a passionate guide to the history and culture of Guadalajara who was attentive at all times to us and answered all the questions we had. We hope to come back in the future and meet some other things that remained pending in Guadalajara.
Una jornada interesante y cálida. Mucho aprendizaje y disfrute de Tonalá y Tlaquepaque. Diego te hace sentir cómoda y segura.
