Diego is super knowledgeable and clearly has a passion for history and the local culture. It was a real treat to hear and learn so much about guachimontones and the artisans in the local town. Followed by a delicious lunch by the beautiful lake. Would absolutely recommend, and will be thinking of Diego and his other tours next time I’m in Jalisco!

Itinerary
After a scenic 1-hour drive from your accommodation in Guadalajara, our journey begins with a visit to the circular pyramids of Guachimontones. Your guide will lead you through the archeological site, revealing fascinating facts about the architecture, agriculture, and spirituality of the Teuchitlan indigenous civilization that flourished in Western Mexico 2000 years ago. Dive further into their intriguing stories at the on-site museum.
Then, we’ll explore the nearby town of Teuchitlan and experience firsthand the quiet rhythm of an authentic Mexican small town. As we stroll, we’ll visit the main square, the local market, the river boardwalk, and a selection of family-owned shops, offering a closer look at regional products and everyday life. We’ll conclude our adventure at the region’s largest lake, La Vega Lagoon, where you can relax over lunch and drinks while taking in the stunning natural surroundings. The return drive to Guadalajara takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on traffic, bringing the total experience to about 6 hours.

This was our second tour with Diego after Chapala and Ajijic and I can’t recommend him enough! We chose this tour because it was the only one that allowed us to visit Guachimontones without having to go to Tequila. Diego provided the perfect amount of information, explaining everything in a clear way. His English is excellent because he lived in Canada and New Zealand, and he has an academic background in social sciences, so you can tell he is clearly passionate and super knowledgeable about history and archeology, which made the experience even more interesting. After visiting the pyramids, we explored the town of Teuchitlan and fell in love with it. It had such a peaceful atmosphere and Diego provided fascinating context that helped us understand both the history and the current situation of the community, including some challenging topics that many guides might shy away from. We visited the main square, a small local market and a cultural center that we would never have found on our own. We had a chance to interact with the locals and try artisanal bread in a local shop, which was particularly amazing! We ended the day with a delicious lunch and beers at a restaurant with beautiful views of a local lake. It was a perfect day! and having an entirely private tour was especially helpful because my elderly parents like to explore at their own pace. 10/10!
Diego was an amazing guide who took the time to educate us prior to arrival. The grounds are beautiful in July due to being a rainy season. The artifacts on display to show how life was lived and purpose. We also visited the small town of Teuchitlan and had a wonderful lunch by the water.
Diego was kind and knowledgeable and welcoming. He was extremely passionate about making our experience the best it could be!
Diego’s knowledge, presentation and personality made for a very interesting, fun and learned experience. We highly recommend his tours and will be re-connecting for future tours in / around Guadalajara ourselves.
Diego arrived to our hotel perfectly on time. The driver Gustavo drove safely and carefully, while Diego advised us of the history and details of the places we visited. The distillery and the agave fields were great to see, and learning the culture of the region was fantastic. Highly recommended.
If you are looking for an authentic, local's view of these 2 amazing places, look no further than Diego's tour. My wife and I started our day at 7:30 and would highly recommend that you do the same as we were able to beat the crowd at the Guachimontones and get a head start in Tequila, even on a Saturday. There were still people coming in as we were heading back to Guadalajara. We are always impressed as we explore new areas in Mexico and having Diego as our personal tour guide for the day was the perfect way to experience these amazing landmarks. Diego is very knowledgeable on the area and it is easy to see that he has a passion for history as well as folklore. The information he's equipped with is a perfect amount without feeling overloaded. He recommenced many good places to eat, drink, and shop, but ultimately left the decision up to us. There is lots to do in Tequila, so don't be shy if you have an idea of something specific you'd like to see. We were on the fence about trying to travel on our own to these sites and we would have been without 90% of the interesting information and history without Diego. Not to mention we would have not gotten the delicious local food. "When you see the abuelas in their aprons, that's how you know good food is coming," he said. If you are on the fence, you will not regret your day with Diego.
We really enjoyed our tour of both the Town of Tequilla and the Guachimontone Pyramids with Diego. He was extremely well versed on the history of both areas as well as where to eat along the way. The tour of the tequila factory was wonderful and his connections with the owners of the distillery made it an extra special experience.
We had an incredible day with Diego! He was professional, SO knowledgeable, personable, friendly and overall, just a wonderful person to spend the day with. We learned so much from him and got to see things we would have otherwise missed. He also gave fantastic recommendations for places to eat and drink. We would definitely book with him again!
This was our favorite tour! We took a total of four tours in Mexico - 2 in Jalisco and 2 in Yucatan, and this was by far the best. Diego was timely and great with communicating ahead of the trip. I appreciated that he had a driver so it felt very safe to talk and ask questions during the drive (whereas in other trips, the tour guide was also the driver). I liked that Diego provided enough information and background on the history of Guachimontones and Tequila, without hovering. He let us explore on our own but was always nearby for questions. We got to pick where we had lunch in Tequila, I didn't realize how much this mattered until we took a tour to Chapala where the guide dropped us off at a restaurant that was expensive, slow, and not worth the wait. Overall, I highly recommend this tour. It could not have been better! Thanks Diego for a great experience.
This full day trip was full of new experiences, underscored by the informed commentary of our wonderful guide. Our driver was excellent, and the day felt like a true luxury, just us exploring the pyramids and not just Tequila but the surrounding area. I felt like Diego listened to our interests and questions and planned the day around us, instead of fitting us to a reahearsed speech. I have had two tours with him and recommend him very highly. Well worth the money.
This tour was incredible! Diego has vast knowledge of the history of the area and tequila making process, making for a special blend of culture, history, and food. Diego times the tour so you can see the ruins before people arrive. Then we had the *best* carnitas tacos (seriously, I’ve had a lot) before heading to a tequila distillery for a tasting. He gave us a tour which was unlike other winery/distillery tours I’ve been on - we could get up close and really see how it’s done. Finally, we headed to Tequila for some walking cocktails and an authentic lunch in a market. I’ve been on a few similar tours in other countries and have a pretty high set of expectations; Diego exceeded them all. It was like touring around with a friend who knows everything but weaves cool facts into natural conversation. The only thing I regret is not booking more of Diego’s excursions. Next time I’m in GDL, you best believe I’ll be booking another tour with Diego!!
Very beautiful experience and full of knowledge. Diego did a wonderful job being our guide. Not only does he know the history but is passionate about it. This tour is a must and will recommend to anyone visiting the area.
I booked a private tour with Diego to visit Guachimontones, one distillery, and the town of Tequila Mexico. The entire trip was fantastic! It started off incredibly organized and easy. Diego texted me the day before the tour with all of the info I needed to know—pick up time, proper footwear, what to bring, etc. The day of the tour Diego and the driver met me outside my hotel on time (they were actually early!) and then we started the trip by stopping at a roadside shop to buy breakfast and sandwiches. Diego made sure I was okay with local food and when I said yes he really showed me some of the best Mexican food I’ve ever eaten. I height recommend going with Diego’s suggestions and avoiding the tourist restaurants. The food is amazing and incredibly fresh (I bought a pork sandwich at 7am and didn’t eat it until 7pm and it was still absolutely tasty—this is a huge shout out to the quality of the the food because it’s not common to be able to eat a sandwich 12hrs after it is made and have it be just as delicious as it was 12hrs earlier). Then it was on to Guachimontones. Diego made sure we arrived slightly before Guachimontones opened so we would be the first ones in—this made the trip magical. From the little hike up to the ruins where we were able to see beautiful birds with no other people around to exploring the ruins by ourselves—couldn’t have been happier about the early start! Diego also did an amazing job at telling me about the history and archeology of the ruins. Absolutely amazing! Next was a drive over to distillery. Diego specifically selected a distillery that allowed us to walk around by ourselves without a massive tour group. There was a nice tequila tasting, a bit of shopping, and then we headed out for a beautiful and scenic drive to the town of Tequila Mexico. The name of the distillery is Los Tres Tonos and I can’t thank Diego enough for choosing this place. Great tequila, great people, beautiful tour. Last but not least we visited Tequila Mexico. I wasn’t interested in shopping, more the history and the food. Diego geared this part of the tour perfectly for me. He brought me to one of his favorite taco stands. Best tacos I’ve ever eaten! My recommendation is to avoid the Jose Cuervo tourist restaurants and have Diego take you to his favorite taco stands! You will not regret it—and you can eat other meals in your hotel or fancy restaurants—so rely on Diego to take you to the freshest and tastiest stands he recommends and enjoy the culture and the food! All I can say is BOOK DIEGO FOR A PRIVAT TOUR!!!! I generally don’t enjoy tours but this was amazing! Great guy and great experience!
Diego was phenomenonal. He was super knowledgeable and conversational. Him and our driver were amazing at making sure we were taken care of as well as educating us on the area. Highly recommend. You will nit be disappointed.
Diego is incredibly personable and knowledgeable. He gave us an educational experience as well as a tour! Juan was a wonderful driver, too! Diego gave us context for the culture at Guachimontones to cultural events in other areas of the world that were more familiar to us so that we had good perspective on this incredible site. Between Guachimontones and the distillery, we learned much about Mexican history - who were the conquerors, for how long, and what cultural influences can still be seen today. He also gave us a brief political overview from the early 1900s to present day. We learned so much about agave - how it’s grown, processed, the many different uses, and the culture around it - and we toured and had a tasting at a beautiful family-owned distillery. The tour of the distillery was fascinating and the tasting was delicious! Tequila is a sipping beverage, we just didn’t know how to fully appreciate this before. The lunch and tour of the town of Tequila capped off our day perfectly. Diego talked to us about the ways that tourism and modern process methods are bumping up against the “old ways” and how this is creating some challenges for the people of the town. We highly recommend this tour and would take any other tour Diego offered if our vacation was only longer!
