Itinerary
Sierra Nevada, or Sulayr, Mountain of the Sun as it was called by the Muslims, rises up between the provinces of Granada and Almeria like a giant and compact massif with fifteen peaks of over 3,000 metres, including the Mulhacén (3,482 metres), the highest point on the Iberian Peninsula. After being collected from your accommodation in Granada, you will be driven to 2,500 meters above sea level to the top of the Sierra Nevada Road. From here you will head to the most beautiful glacier valley of Sierra Nevada, San Juan Valley. Here you will learn how the ice has been excavating the rocks throughout thousand of years. You will also encounter beautiful lakes, waterfalls, and shiny rocks, as well as wildlife such as mountain goats, eagles, birds migrating from Africa, and insects and plants that only exist here.

Jaime and his adorable dog, Kai were incredible guides. It was a beautiful day (9-4:30) exploring the Sierra Nevadas. I enjoyed meeting my fellow group members and learning more about the geology of the area. I know many people wonder if they can do the hike, I'd say if you regularly hike or do cardio, you'll be fine. If not, it might be slower and more challenging, but we did take a lot of breaks.
This hike has become a core memory to me to say the least. I saw that it said beginner friendly, but was very nervous because I did not bring hiking shoes nor trainers (I was in soft sneakers), and I’m practically a novice when it comes to hiking and I have exercise-induced asthma plus a fear of heights. Even thought about not going because I did not want to be a hindrance. But I am so glad I went. The descriptions are true. I received trekking poles (helps an insane amount), gloves, a warm sweater, a backpack, and Jamie (our guide) advised us to have at least 1L of water, which I’m so glad I got at the lounge because it was very much a necessity during the hike. Note: everything out of that man’s mouth is gold, he explained different kinds of geology for us too. What made this such a core memory was that I did it afraid, short of breath, and unprepared. And I met the kindest people on the hike who helped me along and always checked on me, including Jamie, who, when saw me struggling, brought me to the front of the group to make sure I was okay and wasn’t left behind, continually reassuring me. The way down is slippery and I slipped quite a bit, and he had me holding onto his shoulders to help me. When you reach the peak, it’s a beautifully transformative experience. I cried. Halfway through I was thinking I might not be able to do it. But the kindness of Jamie and his trusted doggo Kai, and of my fellow hikers helped me reach this view. It’s well worth the pain and struggle for the feeling of accomplishment when you reach the peak while doing it afraid and unsure. Ps: please wear at least trainers.
We really enjoyed the hike with Jaime! We felt very welcome and it just like hiking with friends. Kai the dog helped guide us and provided constant entertainment. Beautiful scenery and we were able to see many different species of animals and plants which Jaime explained to us. The hike was at a great pace and was adapted to the group. We were never rushed and were able to take our time and rest when needed. Pick up was in a central and convenient location. Definitely take lots of water and food/snacks. If you cannot, the tour begins with a stop at a place where you can buy some food and water. Hiking poles were provided. We had a great time and would definitely recommend or would go again!
Fun and as described! Good views on the Sierra Nevada and interesting facts from a knowledgeable guide and his lovely dog.
Great hike. I am 60 and have a dodgy knee so that combined with the altitude made this hike a little challenging for me. It’s subjective though - ten years ago it would have been easy. Views were amazing.
Jamie was a wonderful guide that took us on a wonderful trail off the beaten path so we really got to experience the beauty and solitude of the Sierra Nevada park. You can tell he loves the area and is very knowledgable about the flora, fauna and geologic history. And we absolutely loved his dog! We saw various bird species, and both male and female ibex. 100% recommend.
Very nice experience, good and helpful guide, but be aware, that it requieres some physical capabilities.
Very difficult for non-hikers so be warned but Jamie can provide everything you should need, you just need to ask ahead of time. That said, it was totally worth it and one of the coolest travel experiences I’ve ever done. 10/10
The hike with Jaime in the Sierra Nevada was pure joy — truly an unforgettable day! From the center of Granada, we reached Sierra Nevada in just about an hour in a comfortable minibus that took us to the starting point of our hike. The journey itself was already a pleasure: beautiful landscapes outside the window accompanied by calm rock ballads created a perfect atmosphere. Once we arrived, we had a short stop, and anyone who needed extra equipment was provided with a backpack, jacket, or a sun-protective hat. The weather was absolutely wonderful. The hike lasted around 4.5 hours at a relaxed pace with regular breaks, so everyone managed it comfortably. The trail itself is not technically difficult, although having a bit more fitness than the average office worker who never exercises is definitely helpful — or alternatively, being around 30 years old! Throughout the hike, Jaime shared fascinating information about the geology, fauna, and flora of the region, and he patiently answered all our questions. We were also accompanied by Kay, Jaime’s dog — an incredibly cheerful, energetic, and people-friendly companion. Friendly with absolutely everyone, Kay walked with us the entire way, happily rolling around in the snow and constantly inviting us to play by bringing sticks. The trail went both uphill and downhill, offering stunning valleys, waterfalls, breathtaking panoramas, and, above all, an overwhelming sense of peace and tranquility. This experience is absolutely worth recommending to anyone who loves nature and mountain adventures. Thank you, Jaime!
Jaimie and Kai were incredible guides. Jamie is a seasoned expert and was very patient with all hikers. His knowledge of the mountain, its vegetation and rock formation is incredible. We could not have asked for a better day.
I came to this 'hike' quite ill-prepared. I was wearing trainers and didn't take a jacket because I expected a nice little walk, a stop somewhere scenic for lunch and an easy descent. It was not like that at all but our guide Jaime and the group (Dan, Janet, Winston and Asako) were amazing. Jaime kitted me out with warm clothes and the group kept me going with their friendliness, warmth and encouragement. We saw an ice tunnel over the San Juan river, then hiked a waterfall, crossing snow and finally to the summit to see the view of Mulhacén. The weather was changeable and the terrain was rough but we did it and it was incredible. There were tiny flowers starting to bloom and lots of birds and insects and we were rewarded throughout the day with sightings of ibex. An absolutely wonderful day xx
Lovely experience with Jamie & Kai (his dog!) Would recommend to any traveler looking for an escape from the city for a bit!
I had a fantastic day out with Jaime, our tour leader. After seeing the Sierra Nevada from Granada, it was wonderful to be walking in the mountains themselves. Jaime was friendly and knowledgeable - a clear expert - making sure we had all the necessary equipment and information needed to have a really great time! Everything ran super smoothly, including the transfer to and from the city. The scenery was simply breathtaking - we had perfect snowy conditions, although I think this would be a brilliant adventure whatever the season & weather. I’d love to return one day to see the mountains in the Summer too & wouldn’t hesitate to book this trip again. Thank you so much, Jaime!
Overall a really nice and relaxed hike. The drive was only about 45min from Granada and on the drive you'll go through some beautiful villages. The views on the hike was spectacular: for my hike in March I was able to get quite a close view of the snow-capped mountains. The route took us through many mountains. Jaime was a great guide who looked after everyone taking regular breaks, making sure everyone stayed hydrated and checking everyone had suitable clothing. He was very confident with the path and knew the mountains well. Highly recommend for a lovely escape from the city!! For other guests I recommend coming prepared with food and go to bathroom before as once you meet in the morning there are no stops for bathroom or buying food. Bring waterproof shoes (though I managed it all ok with running shoes). Hiking poles and warm clothing (gloves, fleece jacket) were provided. Our hike was on dry, rocky ground but some streams cut through our path. I would recommend this only for people confident with hiking as some paths were quite narrow with steep drops, and the first hour or so is quite steep.
Beautiful and relaxed hike. It was nice to be in a small, friendly group with a good guide and cute dog Kai. Highly recommend this tour if you want to get away from busy Granada.
This was a wonderful hike! Jaime was a fantastic guide, very kind and knowledgeable. I had a wonderful time and highly recommend!
Our guide Jaime was kind and knowledgeable and it has been a pleasure to hike with him and his cute dog Kai!
Overall a great experience to hike the high Sierra Nevada Mountains. The views were exceptional, and the hike strenuous. Jaimie set a reasonable pace with a few longer rests in picturesque spots along the way. Lots of amazing photo opportunities.
Jamie & his dog Kia are very professional. Extremity comfortanle experience with a small group. Approx 6-8 hours (including travel). Wear hiking boots or runners with grip. Bring: Back pack, sun protection, long sleeves option in summer, 1.5-2L water + snacks / lunch. Uphill - moderate to good fitness required. Very quiet & undiscovered trail.
This tour was fantastic & made even better with the guide Jaime and his dog Kai. Jaime is very knowledgeable about these mountains giving some good history points as well as knowledge about local wildlife and plants. This is a full day activity, being picked up in the centre of Grenada at 9AM. You then take a 30-40 minute drive up into the mountain where there is a spot to grab a drink and some snacks. Total walking time for our group was around 6 hours (4 hour up and 2 hour down) Even in the height of summer, temperature is much cooler up the top, so much so, there was some ice at the top of the mountain still whilst the centre of Grenada was over 30 degrees Celsius! The climb does require some level of fitness as the way up does get steep. I would absolutely recommend & we will be going again in the future.
Our guide and his energetic dog were great company! This experience was outstanding. A nice contrast to enjoying the manmade wonders of Granada- to enjoy the natural wonders of the close by mountains. Worth the time and a very unique experience. The hike itself has some spurts of intensity but otherwise is fairly easy. Ps- You will find much cooler temps at 10,000 feet and it's a fantastic way to beat the heat of Granada.
Absolutely amazing trip. The guide was very calm and experienced and just took things in our pace. Very nice people and ofcourse invredible views along the way! I would definitely reccomend this if visiting Granada.
Do not miss the opportunity to take this hike with Jaime! The hike itself was incredible, and a refreshing break from the heat of Granada city and full of diverse landscapes, flora, and fauna. The hike itself was challenging but doable. Jaime shared his knowledge with us throughout the hike, which made the experience even more enjoyable. He was also an amazing and clearly experienced guide who ensured that everyone had plenty of water, the appropriate clothing, and equipment to handle the terrain. He paced everything perfectly to make sure we had plenty of breaks and time to take in the surroundings. Jaime is the best!
An energetic hike, which we’d never have done without Jaime. A terrific guide, he was always looking out for our safety at the same time as taking us to spectacular spots, and contextualising what we were experiencing with geological information. Highly recommended.
An exciting exploration in Sierra Nevada when the glacier had not completely melted. Our guide was attentive and took good care of us.
Lovely hike in the mountains. There was snow present. Luckily they loaned us hiking shoes and gloves. While it’s possible to do the hike in trainers, hiking boots are more ideal. The guide did a fantastic job and got me back to town in time to catch the train.
I had the best hike with Jamie. It was quite challenging on the way up, but that’s also a good excuse to stop and check out the views! Jamie was very informative about the area and his dog, Kai was an adorable addition. We had a variety of weather so be prepared for a change in temperatures and wear sun screen! I really enjoyed this hike and would definitely do it again in another season to see how the Sierra Nevada changes.
This was a very unique and special hike. Even though I wasn’t an advanced hiker the group and Jaime are very helpful and patient throughout. The peacefulness of the Sierra Nevadas is wonderful. Thank you for a day of trekking!
The tour with Jaime was amazing. He has a lot of knowledge about Sierra Nevada. The views were incredible! Jaime was so kind with us
Amazing experience! We were walking for 6 hours with beautiful views. The guide was talkative and so kind, always willing to answer our questions and tell us about the place, plants, animals...I would do it again and I truly recommend it!
Wow. This hike was more than I expected. Stunning views & nicely challenging with snow underfoot in parts. Jaime is a very experienced guide, with excellent navigational skills and shares a lot about the landscape & local geology. I was joined with a lovely group of travellers, and could see all thoroughly enjoyed the hike. Kai, the dog was an ball of energetic fun. The whole experience left my soul feeling fulfilled after
Really an amazing experience, I strongly recommend for everyone. It might be a little hard if you're not use to this type of trekking, but it's worth it !
We had a great time! This is a great way to get out of the busy city and enjoy the beautiful landscape. We drove about ~45 minutes up into the Sierra Nevada mountains, and then hiked through the afternoon. We left Granada at 9 am and got back around 4. The hike was moderately strenuous with some steep climbs at ~9000 feet. Poles, hats, and gloves were provided. The views were great, and we spotted mountain goats and vultures. We saw no other hikers the whole time, so it was very peaceful.
Jaime was a very knowledgeable tour guide and helped provide us with supplies that we needed. His dog, Kai, was an adorable addition to the trip.
Nevada Guides were excellent and we highly recommend. Jaime was a very knowledgeable and experienced guide. Booking was easy on Trip Advisor. Jaime kept us updated on changing weather conditions to ensure we had a safe and enjoyable hike. He was also well prepared with lots of extra gear (hiking poles, backpacks, warm clothing, rain gear) for those who needed it. He set a good pace for our group which was a mix of beginner and experienced hikers. He was knowledgeable of the climate, ecology and geological history of the Sierra Nevada. The hiking was fantastic with beautiful scenery. The hike starts at 2500m with another 500 m of elevation gain. Ensuring a good level of fitness to deal with altitude is important. For those nervous or fearful of heights there are some steep sections and exposure especially at the summit. The total hiking time was about five hours. The day started and ended at a local taberna (at the trailhead) for warm or cold drinks.
Very cool and unique experience. Such a nice change of place from the city and tours. Jaime was an amazing guide. The landscape is very harsh but beautiful. Glacial valley. Definitively need to be physically fit to do this tour as you start at 8K feet and hike to 10K feet--so air is thinner. You will want to have trail or hiking shoes as you are mostly on rock. Stopped to do a picnic along the way (pack a lunch, snacks and bring plenty of water). The mountain air was really nice. Can't recommend enough. Thank you Jaime.
Jaime (and Kai!) are truly expert guides who navigated us safely through these wild terrains in unexpectedly rainy and windy weather. I thought I was prepared with hiking boots, layers of clothes and rainproof jacket but the mountains had another idea and I was grateful for Jaime's extra pairs of gloves, beanie and rain ponchos. So I think overpreparedness for all types of weather is key. The ascent was tougher than expected because we were off the beaten paths and climbing steep slate hills but it was totally worth it at the top with spectacular views, and in hindsight more fun. I recommend hiking shoes with ankle support for this hike as it can get quite slippery on the loose rocks even without the rain. My parents in their late 60s are regular bushwalkers and they thoroughly enjoyed this tough hike. Highly recommended for those who have a good level of fitness and like a challenge.
Jaime was a wonderful guide, informative and kind to everyone. He’s clearly a very seasoned hiker / mountaineer, and has the best dog ever by his side with an equal breadth of capability. Even with that, he was able to support the entire group with a range of endurance and skills. The hike itself is no joke, however it is very doable if you have done some hiking with elevation. The terrain is at most minimally technical. Only thing that was a slight hiccup was my partner did not have adequate footwear packed, due to our impression there would be a range of appropriate hiking shoes available. There was only a size 43, too big, but manageable in this case. If you require footwear for rent reach out at least a few days in advance. Overall, fantastic time. Well worth the money. Jaime and Kai make a fantastic pair to guide and encourage people through this journey.
Picked up right on time by our bright and breezy guide Buitre. The hike was marvelous and the cool breezes a wonderful respite from the heat of the city. Magnificent views, cattle, sheep and mountain goats easily spotted with snow still visible on the upper slopes.. Buitre went at a very manageable pace for our group of 5. Singing and sharing insights on the way he made the day relaxing and fun! A 5 star day.....except for the following: 1. The company state that they hire out hiking boots for 3euro. However, they no longer provide this service. A good pair of strong sneakers will indeed suffice....mine were not so strong and lacked grip. I was hoping to hire boots and contacted the company 2 weeks before the trip to secure them, but my messages were ignored until it was too late and I was already in Spain. 2. The route is not difficult per se, but there are a couple of places where hiking poles are a definite advantage.😉 I was assured that poles would be available FOC for us all. Again, not the case. Buitre kindly lent me his own hiking poles whilst 2 of our group members had to make do with sticks found along the path. Not ideal, especially if you like the security and balance that poles afford. I would suggest poles be provided as standard procedure for all, and that the boot hire option be removed from the company information if the service is no longer provided. 🤷🏼♀️ Thank you Buitre for a lovely day!!
Jaime (along with his gorgeous dog Kai) was a fantastic guide! The hike was slightly challenging at points but well worth it for the views at the summit. 10/10 would highly recommend, thanks Jaime!
I went on the hike for my 30th birthday. I always like to go somewhere with nice landscape and have an opportunity to meet other travellers. The views were breathtaking, but what made the trip even better was Jaime our tour guide and his dog, Kai. Jaime gave excellent local information and is an experienced hiker. He also took photos for us. Thank you Jaime and Kai. I highly recommend this trip!
A great way to spend a day exploring the Sierra Nevada. I cannot recommend this tour highly enough. Jamie and his team were excellent taking us on a hike we would have never managed to find or conduct ourselves. His trusty adorable dog Kai was the perfect co-navigator and source of much entertainment. It's a moderate hike and there were different abilities in the group but Jamie ensured that the pace was right for everyone and no-one was left straggling behind. His knowledge of the local plant and wildlife coupled with the history of the Sierra Nevada was second to none.
A great contrast activity to our days in the city. The hike was not easy but we went at a pace that meant we could all keep up. Beautiful scenery, stunning mountains. Jaime is a great guide, really friendly and knowledgeable. Highly recommend
The hike up the Sierra Nevada was truly breathtaking! The guide, Jaime, was fantastic and made sure we were well prepared with walking poles, gloves, fleece etc. He is also a fantastic person, very friendly and willing to share his experience and expert knowledge of these incredible mountains. Don't be afraid to ask questions, he is happy to answer. I learnt so much from him. His dog Kye, is the star of the show! Ensure you bring sunglasses, hat, sun cream - it is not to be underestimated how exposed you are to the sun, and depending on the day, also the wind. Take some water and snacks for energy, at the return location, there is time for food and drinks if you want. Thank you Jaime!
Great hike with Jaime, his dog, and fellow travelers. It was steep and long but well worth the effort!
We had an increíble experience with Jaime showing us the most astonishing landscape in Sierra Nevada mountains. Just walk, breathe and smell the pure air was relaxing and refreshing from the routine life. GREAT in all senses.
Wonderful hikig experience. We really enjoyed the day. It is not difficult, the wiews are impressive and the guide is kind and helpful, he knows the area so well and is always willing to explain anything and adapt the pace to the different people there. His dog, Kai, is a essential part of the tour, always taking care of everyone, like the best shepherd!
Our hike with Jaime and Kai was amazing! Right from the pick up location, we knew we were in good hands. On the ride over, we were immersed in Granada history. Arriving at the starting location, Jaime provided all hikers with extra layers, which were necessary for our middle of April hike. The hike itself was a perfect pace for experienced yet out of season hikers. And the views made the experience well worth the climb. His knowledge and love for the mountains were beyond infectious. A must do for the outdoorsy tourist!
We really enjoyed our hike with Jamie and Kai. Jamie is an excellent guide answering question and point out flora, fauna, and geomorphic features on the mountain. Be prepared with lunch, snack, water, and a long day of physical exertion. The views were worth the climb (which was challenging at times)! We would definitely recommend this day trip!
