Itinerary
We start here with an introduction to the history of Ghent and the role the city played as a trading hub in medieval times. We also introduce you to the 3 towers of the Ghent skyline, which are best visible from this spot.
At the Graslei, the beating heart of the historical city centre, we show you which buildings were involved in the trading activities when this area functioned as the city’s port.
Here we explain why a specific aspect of the Design Museum very much symbolises the stubborn and rebellious mindset of the Gentenaars!
With a view of the medieval covered Great Butchers’ Hall across the water, we tell you some darker facts about this majestic building.
Unlike most castles, the medieval Castle of the Counts is located right the middle of the city and and is very well preserved. We will tell you all about its impressive past!
The square in front of the castle is both known as the square of death as well as the square of life. You’ll find out why!
The House of Alijn was a hospital and is the only remaining ‘god house’ in Ghent. We will tell you the unfortunate story of how it became a hospital.
This illustrious square has played a prominent role in Ghent’s history, as well as the man whose statue is located in the middle. Our guide will share its fascinating history with you!
As a way to keep our monumental buildings from being sprayed by graffiti, the city has designated a specific area for street artists to go wild. We’ll walk you through it!
To understand why our city hall looks a little bit ‘confused’, our guide will explain the most significant conflict in the history of Ghent.
Our cathedral has a rich history and houses many art treasures, most notably the world-famous Ghent Altarpiece by the brothers Van Eyck. We’ll share some of this history with you.
The Belfry is the people’s tower and reflects the stubbornness, power and independence of the city. As the former prison, its façade also tells the story of a bizarre legend that our guide will share with you.
This gem from the early 12th century looks out over Korenmarkt and has St Nicholas, the protector of merchants and sailors, as its patron saint. The façade of this building shows us the legend of its patron saint: the perfect way to end this legendary tour!

This was a lovely walking tour of Ghent that provided an overview of the culture and history. Our tour guide, Liedewei, was very personable. She provided some interesting information as we traveled throughout the city. The tour included several stops where Liedewei described in detail what we were seeing and its historical significance in Ghent.
Manon was fantastic! Such a lively and entertaining tour.

Had a wonderful private tour by Sébastien. The tour was filled with stories of Gent's history both new and old. Could tell he really knew his city. Was a great way to see the city as just our family. Was also able to ask for recommendations on things to eat/drink and see for the rest of our stay. Very happy with our private tour of the city.
Kenny was very knowledgeable and took the time to share every detail! He provided us with recommendations and tips for after our tour as well. We did a private tour with our 3 year old. We recommend doing the tour in the morning as we did as it is not very busy and we were able to cover a lot. Highly recommend this tour and your guide!
Hans was excellent and very informative! This was a favorite from my husband and me. Thank you for sharing your beautiful city with us!

very interesting, good tour to get the lay of the land and bearings before walking around Ghent - east, enjoyable tour for all :) guide was friendly and knowledgeable, lovely experience
Hans was very friendly and definitely knew Ghent! His love for his home city was obvious. He was a fun story teller. He took us under a bridge and he had a reference map drawn out in chalk! Then we walked and he had props and pictures to enhance the stories he was telling. Nice job Hans. C& L
Terrific in every way, informative and entertaining
Hans was a walking encyclopedia of knowledge of Ghent through the ages, and a local retiree.
A lovely couple of hours with a retired local who went back to school and had wonderful historical information. Ghent is a lovely city and the history certainly made the weekend all the more memorable. It was a private tour, so just the 3 of us.
Amazing tour guide, very funny and knowledgable
Manon gave our family an absolutely wonderful private tour last weekend in the beautiful city of Gent. She is incredibly knowledgeable and shared interesting local insights that really brought the tour to life. What we appreciated most was how attentive she was to our preferences (we booked a private tour with the family) —she tailored the experience perfectly to our timing, made a nice stop at a coffee place we asked for but also told us about other cities in Belgium that we were also visiting in our trip. We would highly recommend Manon to anyone looking for a personal, enthusiastic and engaging tour!
Our family had a lovely walking tour with Kenny, who was very knowledgeable about the city and who was also very patient with our younger family members. In addition to an introduction to Ghent history, he also gave us tips on additional historical sites to visit as well as upcoming festivals and noteworthy cafés. My grandson was also intrigued by some of the darker tidbits that were shared. Our visit was short, but thanks to his enthusiasm and knowledge of the city. I'm eager to return to Ghent to see more.
Very informative and well laid out program. Saw sites that most people do not see on tours. The guide was exceptionally experienced and very knowledgeable. Well worth the money.
This is a wonderful way to quickly absorb the history (some of the history) of this old, great city.
A private tour with a local guide. We really enjoyed Hans and we learned alot about the history of Ghent! The local landmarks became real for us!
Axel, our guide, was excellent. He was extremely informative, knowledgeable, and amusing. He walked at our pace and made sure we were comfortable at all times.
Kenny was fabulous. We absolutely loved our private tour. Kenny had all of the insight and answered all of our questions. His passion for his city and country was contagious. I highly recommend a tour with Kenny.
Get to know Ghent! Easy walking tour of main historical center but done by sharing interesting and memorable stories. Guide was absolutely lovely!
Great experience high recommend! Extremely informative, fun and friendly!
A great walk around the town. Much history with a truly great guide. Very recommended.
Did the 10AM tour. Marianne was a great guide! Really throughout with the explanations and extremely friendly ! Definately coming back for the night tour.
Very nice tour, Kaisa is a very experimented and social guide, knows a lot. Great tour, not too long and overall a great experience.
Amazing tour. Kenny was incredible and we had a lot of fun and ended our trip knowing a lot more about Gent and the culture.
We were lucky to have a private tour with Kenny who expertly took us on a walking tour, pointing all that we should see and do.
Entertaining and great historical context. In two hours we saw all the significant landmarks and understood the main historical events snd why the city looks like it does.
Sophie was a great guide, tour was amazing! Full of history and interesting moments from Ghent to share. Truly recommend
We did a tour with Mariane, who is very passionate, engaging and knowledgeable about Ghent. She told us many interesting stories and gave us tips what to explore further. Highly recommended!
Sophia was friendly, knowledgable and natural. Enjoyed the private aspect of this tour as we could openly discuss and ask more questions, and weren’t held up by others
The price was high for the tour we received. It was supposed to be 2 hours and it lasted approximately 1.5hours. The guide was a nice guy, but he didn’t seem to have an in depth knowledge beyond what he was scripted. He was more interested in sharing food and drink locations, than the history of Ghent. We did try one of the liquors and the Flemish Stew, but not at the locations he recommended. As a group of 4 on a private tour, we expected more information, not so much of an overview. There were no real “hidden gems” or in depth understanding of Ghent during the Medieval time period. Very generic. There were a lot of buildings and sites that we did not experience. It seems like it was not part of his knowledge base. The walking pace was good, therefore we could have seen or learned more about Ghent and its vast history and culture. I would not recommend this tour for the price. We definitely overpaid, comparing this to many walking tours we have done in Europe and Asia.
Our guide Camila was a delightful young g woman who shared many interesting tidbits of local history. Very enjoyable!
We only had the day to see beautiful Ghent and our wonderful tour guide Hans made the most of it for us. Highly recommend!
Such a fascinating and enjoyable tour, thank you so very much for sharing your knowledge and making our time fun and relaxing.
Excellent pace of walk through the town pointing out interesting facts & things to see on buildings you would have otherwise missed, Kenny is a nice guy
