Itinerary
We start here with an introduction to the history of Ghent and the role the city played as a trading hub in medieval times. We also introduce you to the 3 towers of the Ghent skyline, which are best visible from this spot.
We’ll tell you the gruesome story of why the beautiful cathedral is also known as the ‘Devil’s Tower’.
We take you to the heart of the bustling medieval harbour of Ghent, back when the city was an economic powerhouse in Europe, to tell you about the lucrative trading activities.
On this bridge overlooking the giant Butchers’ Hall, we tell you the legend about the execution of a father and son and the miraculous event that saved them.
Built by Count Baldwin in the 9th century to protect the inhabitants from the Viking raids, it was around this impressive fortification that the city started to develop. Our guide will share its fascinating history with you.
Next, we take you to what once was a gigantic palace called the Prince’s Court. Today we need some imagination to envision it, but our guide will bring its history to life!
Here, we will show you the only remaining tower of the 14 km long defence wall that was built around Ghent in the Middle Ages.
We take you to the Bridge of Imperial Delights, which is flanked by 4 sculptures which depict legendary scenes of the life of Charles V. Our guide will explain you some of them.
On this stop, we’ll tell you about the troublesome history of the Religious Wars and the effect the Calvinist rule has had on the history of the city.
To finish the tour, we take you to the picturesque medieval quarter of the Patershol or ‘Monk’s hole’ to tell you about the social impact of the Industrial Revolution and the role it played in the revival of the city’s economy!

We really liked this tour! It was so much fun, entertaining, and genuinely interesting. Kenny was an amazing guide – funny, knowledgeable, and great at keeping us engaged throughout the whole experience. The tour lasts around two hours and is full of fascinating stories and interesting facts about Ghent. A little tip: dress warmly, especially in the evening, as it can get quite cold. Also, bring some cash, as the guide is paid through tips at the end of the tour. We can 100% recommend this experience. If you’re visiting Ghent, don’t miss it! Definitely worth it!
What a great way to spend an evening. Our guide, Kenny, was a great host, taking around the bits of Ghent that you don't normally see, and telling us tales of Witches, torture, and the humiliation and execution of the Burghers of Ghent. As usual, most of the victims were innocent, which makes it more horrifying. Just be aware that you will be walking outside for about an hour and a half, and the Guides are paid only with tips, so bring some cash. Highly recommended.
Loved the tour and it was well planned. Thanks to Manon!
Very interesting evening tour in Gent with our guide Kenny who found the perfect balance between comedy, horror, and fascinating details in his stories. He managed to keep us engaged every single moment of the tour. I highly recommend it. Don't forget to tip because the expensive is definitely worth it.
Having been in Ghent for a day and a half, this added another layer to the experience, took us off the beaten track and gave us places to come back to the day after. Eddy maintained interest throughout and his gentle humour prompted numerous laughs, very local and very knowledgeable. A great way to spend 2 hours and now feel I know more about the rise, fall and subsequent resurrection of Ghents fortunes. Many thanks Eddy!
Kenny was fantastic. Really interesting to learn more about the history of the city from a local. A fun tour with lots of great photo opportunities.
Excellent tour. Manon was extremely informative & enthusiastic - particularly when talking about the torture methods!! Great fun & highly recommended.

Our tour guide Kenny made such a memorable experience for our tour. He was knowledgeable and friendly and so so funny. It’s very obvious how much he cares about his city and I couldn’t recommend him any more. We learned so much more than we expected and had so much fun. We love you Kenny!
Kenny was excellent tour guide he was super funny and very enthusiastic. Very interesting tour, he explained a lot about the city you would not typically think about while walking around Ghent.
The tour guide was very knowledgeable. She had a big personality and was fun to listen to. Lots of great stories.
I was not expecting much for a free tour but this ranks up there with one of the best. Two hours of stories, tales, atmosphere and sights. Our guide Kenny was incredible, too! He was so passionate about Ghent, and really knew his stuff. Totally a professional and multi-lingual as well. We felt super comfortable and taken care of. There was no cost to the tour, just a tip for the guide and he was well worth it.
Kenny war ein toller Tourguide.
Leo was a great tour guide and gave a comprehensive picture of medieval Gent. We loved it! Plus getting to see the city at night is its own kind of beauty
Guide Kenny was informative, friendly and engaging. Including non tourist places of Ghent within the remit of the local history, making the tour more interesting. Easy walking but due to cobbles, recommend sturdy and comfortable footwear. Most enjoyable evening and highly recommend this tour and especially our guide. Thank you
Kenny is the best. Great tour.
Kenny was funny, welcoming, and informative. His love of Ghent and joy in sharing the dramatic, chilling stories with us was infectious. Would recommend!
Kenny was our guide and he had a charming style of telling the stories, combining grotesque historical stories with well placed humor to ease the tension.
Kenny took us around the city and showed us so many awesome spots! The tour was just the right amount of time, entertainment and history mixed with humor! 10/10 must do in the evening!
You will learn interesting things about medieval times in Ghent and the buildings you may have passed without a thought.
We had such a great time on the night tour of Ghent with Monon! She was super positive, friendly, and fun, and really made the whole experience special. The tour was interesting, relaxed, and full of great stories. We absolutely loved it and would definitely recommend both the tour and Monon! She’s awesome! ⭐️
The guide had plenty of good stories to tell and a great sense of humor to go along with it. It was a two hour tour with several stops. It rained quite a bit, but honestly that gave a more authentic Ireland experience 😅
Kenny was awesome! Passionate and as a regular tour taker top 3 I have taken! Must go!
Fun and interesting tour. Kenny was fantastic! A different sort of tour than the usual stuff. Highly recommend
10 out of 10. Best walking tour I ever had!

Kenny was great tour guide , nice informative tour
Great! Very informative! Now I know the city better!
It was a nice small tour and our guide, Kenny, was great. It was beautiful to see the city at night, to see some of the places we saw earlier in a different way, and to go to places we wouldn’t have gone to otherwise.
Kenny's tour was one of the highlights of our trip to the city. We were exhausted after a long day of travel, and I was worried two hours would be taxing on us, but Kenny kept things entertaining and lively. He is a true gem. We leaned far more of the city's history than we could have gotten from a book or YouTube video, and saw sites we never would have found on our own.
Kenny is amazing! It’s such a nice tour!
Liedewij was a wonderful guide and the tour was super engaging, informative and just generally fascinating. Highly recommended but perhaps not for younger children or the faint of heart as the some of the stories are quite gruesome - as the title of the tour suggests!
Amazing experience, the guide was super interesting, charming and funny. It was a pleasure to know “the dark side” of Gent. For sure a good tour to do, very different from the usual and boring ones. Thanks to Kenny for the fantastic tour, I will suggest it to all of my friends!
Learned a lot about the overall history of Ghent. Definitely included some dark details including torture techniques. Manon did a great job. It’s beautiful walking around Ghent at night! Thank you!
Really good tour, good knowledge, entertaining.
As a history buff it was unparalleled for entertainment. Kept it lively and really well done. Kenny is a star.
Excellent walking tour in and around the historic center of Ghent. Goulishly entertaining, and filled with historic facts. Tour guide Kenny was friendly, professional, and very well informed. FYI - this is a free walking tour and participants are free to tip at their discretion.
Kenny was great and fun with very detailed information
Hannah was awesome. Great tour with a lot of knowledge and humor. Perfect amount of touring without getting bored or walking too long.
Kenny was magic, working that forshadowing well, you wont regret coming!
Stunning views of the Illuminated city, witty presentation of the somewhat eery chapters of the history of Gent and a friendly guide who was eager to answer every question. Highly recommendable! Don‘t hesitate to give a tip after this tour free of charge.
Kenny was a fantastic host throughout our 2 hour tour. Time did go pretty quick, as he told many entertaining tales and gave us many photo opportunities along the way. Thank you for a very interesting and enthusiastic tour Kenny!
Fun tour around Gent! Also the storytelling was nice
First of all, thank you for allowing us to book within only two hours til tour time! Excellent meet up, greeting and overview of the tour. Good humor, pace, and group participation throughout. It was a perfect answer to ‘well here we are, now what?’
I was solo, but the group was about 10 people, everybody showed real interest and was listening to our tourguide Kenny, he was hilarious. He told everything with a lot of humor. The tour was very interesting, also because it was already dark, gives the tour just a little more. I surely would recommend this tour and especially with a guide like Kenny.
It was great to learn about the dark side history of Ghent and what made the character of their people. Manon is an excellent story teller and her added humor made the experience more enjoyable for everyone.
Kenny was one of the very best guides I’ve had in all of Europe. He was smart, funny, told captivating tales. I was very impressed with his ability to keep the group moving and entertained.
