Our tour guide was not only knowledgeable about the lesser known history, but she was a hoot to talk to . She was wonderfully passionate about the history/subjects and did an excellent job of relating it back to today. Took about 2hrs. Able to sit on benches about half the time. Discussion and questions were encouraged. I highly recommend this tour to get some knowledge you might not find on the history channel or in the museum.

Itinerary
In Franklin Square we will discuss how Haiti volunteered during the American Revolution, clandestine schools that operated in Savannah that taught literacy to black students while such an education was outlawed, the First African Baptist Church which houses the oldest African Baptist congregation in the country, and its role in the Underground Railroad.
Passing through City Market, we will see Club One, the home performance venue of Lady Chablis, a Savannah LGBTQ icon. We will also see the building that was home to one of the most active markets for the selling of humans as property, which was immediately converted into a freedman's school after emancipation by some of the very people who were sold as property inside.
We will stop in front of Telfair Academy and discuss Mary Telfair, a woman who defied the expectations placed on her by gender roles at the time and began the legacy of preservation in Savannah.
Here we will discuss the impacts of two key native figures in Savannah history: Tomochichi, chief and founder of the native Yamacraw tribe, and Coosaponakeesa (AKA Mary Musgrove) a Creek woman. Both were as instrumental in the shaping of Savannah as Oglethorpe who is considered the founder.
Here we will discuss Juliette Gordon Low, the founder of the girl Scouts, as well as other unconventional female family members, and how they impacted the roles women would play in the future, and will also touch on Julliette's hearing loss.
Here we will briefly discuss the original site of the Savannah Catholic Church, founded by the Haitian community discussed earlier. We we also discuss Susie King Taylor, a self-freed woman who served as a nurse and teacher during the Civil War, published a memoir, and opened a school for black children just off of Chippewa Square.
Here we will stop in front of the Green-Meldrim house and discuss Field Order 15, as issued by General Sherman but formed and negotiated by a group of 20 black pastors and community leaders led by Garrison Frazier, how it was the birth of practical reparation efforts, and why it implementation was prevented.
Here we will discuss Jim Williams, famous from Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, but a prominent Savannah gay man who also began Savannah's entire restoration movement. We will also see the monument of Count Casimir Pulaski, and discuss his impact on the Revolution and the recent discovery that he was likely an intersex person.

My family, with teenage kids, deeply appreciated this diverse city history tour. Our guide Sargon is supremely well versed in multiple aspects of Savannah's history. We learned things that we would not hear anywhere else. No question went unanswered.
Absolutely incredible tour!!! Sargon is a wealth of knowledge about Savannahs history and was able to easily pivot depending on the question we had at the moment, which we had many. Sargon also delivers the information in a very fun and story like manner so it wasn't just dry and boring information, along with giving as much detail about historical events and places as you could want. Having read about and listened to some of the other tours/tour guides this is a must do tour if you want something interesting, entertaining, and different from the information that you could probably just read in the footnote of a history book! When we make it back to Savannah we'll definitely take this tour again!
Is there a way to leave more stars?! This was such an amazing tour that excided my expectations. It was so refreshing to hear the sides of history that get overlooked and minimize in the name of status quo. Sargon was so insightful and knowledgeable of not just the stories but the whole of each person's life and the grater historical context. There is no greater experience than being shown Savannah by someone who genuinely loves learning and sharing history!
This was an excellent tour. Sargon was a very knowledgeable and enthusiastic guide who told us about a host of historical figures from Savannah history who did some remarkable things you wouldn't normally hear about. Their lives and stories were both important and colorful. This tour is as engaging and different as Savannah, itself. I'd recommend it to anybody. When planning your day and/or parking your car build in an extra 15 minutes because the tour ends about half a mile from where it starts.
Great tour! The tour guide clearly has a passion for history and loves to share the stories. We found ourselves listening to every word because of her enthusiasm and angle of the underrepresented party. We would gladly take another tour she offered!
Excellent tour by Sargon. It’s great to see someone who is so passionate and knowledgeable at work. The stories were presented in an objective way and brought to light the stories of people who may have otherwise been overlooked. Highly recommend this tour
Really had a great time on this tour. Sargon the tour guide, was excellent. She knew so much of the lesser known heroes of Savannah's history. You can tell she loves what she does and wants to tell others about it. The walking tour took us through beautiful areas of the city with very nice stops along the tour. Highly recommend if you want to know about Savannah.
Our tour guide Sargon was so full of great information and stories. We spent 2 hours walking the city and hearing all the knowledge. We easily could have gone on longer with all that was going on
This was a fantastic tour. Sargon was a wonderful guide and was so good at bringing the historical people and places to life. I learned so much history I didn't know about before. Highly recommend for anyone visiting Savannah!
Sargon was super friendly and knowledgeable about Savannah. Despite the downpour, Sargon completed the tour and answered all the questions that we had. Great experience and would highly recommend it for anyone who is a interested to learn more about the lesson-known parts of the city’s history. Thank you Sargon!
This tour was incredible. As an aficionado of lesser-told history, Sargon's guided explanations were insightful and informative. They did an excellent job providing as much context to the stories, while also keeping the information entertaining and concise. There is so much I learned on this tour that I would love to share, but if you are considering this tour you are much better off having them tell you instead!
Sargon was an amazing tour guide. I love doing walking tours of cities, but to find one that really gives you a different view of that history is rare. Sargon did a wonderful job of weaving together the tales of the underrepresented that made Savannah what it is.
“S” was a terrific docent. Not only was she full of knowledge that helped us appreciate so many forgotten people who contributed to Savannahs history but she was pleasant as well. Her Rising Voices Tour rates the highest with us.
We all enjoyed Sargon’s nonstop storytelling about the fascinating characters in Savannah’s colorful history.
Awesome experience and guide! Just awesome information and perspective! I recommend it for anyone and everyone.
This was a really interesting tour given by a guide with a truly incredible amount of knowledge. They were so well informed, the tour was very engaging and as a bonus, they always stopped at a bench so folks who needed a rest could sit. A really great experience.
What a fantastic tour! I think everyone should go on this while visiting Savannah! Our tour guide, Sargon, was friendly, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic. Highly recommend!
The tour is informational, dynamic, applicable to the present, it should be required of all visiting Savannah. In cannot relay how fantastic the tour’s content is. If you get Sargon as you are guide it would be amazing; the way information is provided and applied to the contexts of the past and present leaves you with a thirst of knowledge. I strongly recommend to anyone who wishes to have a greater understanding of otherness.
Think you know Savannah? Think again! This tour opened our eyes and made us aware of history that we had literally walked right past in prior days. This will round out your knowledge base of Savannah. Highly recommended!
Sargon is an absolutely wonderful guide! Her knowledge is vast! She had so many tidbits of information that other tours visiting the same places did not know!
Sargon is wonderful...her depth of knowledge is incredible. She provided us with interesting historical stories of lesser known but high impact people who contributed to Savannah's place in history. Highly recommend this tour for individuals that want greater insight into the influence of underrepresented people & the significant roles that they played in creating the present day Savannah.
Loved Sargon's storytelling ability- she really drew you in. Even my 8 and 10 year old kids loved hearing the history of these incredible, sometimes overlooked, visionaries who helped make Savannah and the US what it is today. We choose the Rising Voices over a traditional history of Sav tour bc figured always can get the "mainstream" history everywhere else.
Sargon was the best tour guide we had ever had in Savannah...and I have done a *lot* of walking tours! They brought so much of Savannah's complex and rich past to life with insights, drawing connections across centuries, and highlighted the stories of the personalities that put Savannah on the map and made it such a vibrant and unique place in the Southeast. If you ever wanted something more meaningful experience than the retiree-friendly, gloss-over-the-Confederate-parts trolley tours, you will not regret having Sargon take you on a walk through history, particularly Black history and history of LGBT+ communities in Savannah. It will make Savannah that much more of a richer, colorful place to explore more and understand our American history a little bit better. Bravo to Sargon for their ability to keep us--a couple--and a busy family with young and old--both entertained simultaneously for over 90 minutes. This is the best tour we took for our entire long weekend in Savannah. Don't miss out!
Sargon is an amazing storyteller and has researched the history of Savannah with great care. Their tour was the first one we took to get to know te city, and it was the best of anything else we experienced later during our trip. If you want a tour of this beautiful city but not what the other commercial tours offer - this one is the one for you! My girlfriend and I enjoyed it immensely.
Loved hearing these stories that are not told often or enough. I love history and have taken many other tours in Savannah (city tours, house tours, boat tours, museum tours) and this was my favorite. Excellent tour!
I took the tour while visiting Savannah with my mom and we were the only guests that booked for this morning. It truly allowed Sargon, who was an amazing tour guide, to transform the tour to a more intimate and personalized experience. Their ability as a storyteller is fun and hilarious while being incredibly informative about the histories of those who aren't well known to the public though they have helped shape Savannah. Some of the stories that were told in this tour wouldn't have been as engaging and interesting if it weren't for them. If you like to partake on a unique history walking tour, I highly recommend this one!
Sargon was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. I was completely sucked into their ability to share so much history with engaging storytelling. They were able to bring to life the many people who are responsible for making savannah what it is today. I highly recommend this tour and will be looking for any others that they do for the next time I return.
Sargon was the ultimate tour guide. She was knowledgeable, answered all questions, was considerate and really enjoying her job! We learned a lot about the history of Savannah in much better detail than a bus tour we took a couple of years ago. Sargon walked at our pace and found benches for us (older folks). We could not have been happier!
This was a great fresh perspective on Savannah history. Our guide was knowledgeable, friendly, and engaging.
My favorite part was Saigon's, the guide, voluminous historical knowledge. She described Savannah and its famous inhabitants so knowledgeably and she could answer any questions posed by my history-obsessed husband. Also, her narrative was highly enjoyable, particularly the bombshell ending of a forensic solution to a centuries old mystery.
Great enthusiasm and knowledge. So glad to hear so many stories beyond the typical tour. I would highly recommend this tour.
Our guide was spectacular! She was a seasoned guide who knew so many facts about the squares and sights. I even noticed other people who weren’t in the tour group craning their heads to listen in to her informative speeches. She was also easy to hear despite there being several loud motorists nearby. The subject material of this tour is unlike any of the other tours. Thank you for a great experience and sharing the history of underrepresented, untold heroes!
The tour was fascinating and a highlight of my trip to Savannah. I would highly recommend it for anyone looking for different historical contributions than those that are always read about in history books.
Our tour guide Sargon was so knowledgeable and an absolute delight to walk through the city with. While we knew this was a tour meant to highlight underrepresented voices of Savannah, and we definitely learned about historical figures that don’t often get a plaque, their tour really went into a lot of depth and detail so it covered almost all of Savannah’s history. My husband and I learned more on this tour than on any other more generalized tour we took on our trip. Sargon is an excellent story-teller and time really flew by. Cannot recommend it more highly. If you only go on one walking tour, this should be it!
By far the best and most informative walking tour I've ever taken. Our tour guide, Sargon, was highly knowledgeable, engaging, and just plain fun to talk to. They covered so much history that is ignored or glossed over by the other tours. Aside from the history, they also had great suggestions for things to do and places to see in Savannah and the surrounding area. Highly, highly recommend this tour and tour guide.
Excellent tour, so much history about the founding era of our country and some of the historical figures and locations. Loved the tour. Soren was great!
Terrific walking tour! We so enjoyed all we learned while walking with Sargon. Sargon provided great insight into Savannah’s historical figures. Very worthwhile and a great way to learn about the sites of Savannah. Highly recommend!
Sargon was awesome and SO knowledgeable! If you’re looking for a tour which doesn’t just hit the standard points of interest, book this tour. It does require a lot of walking but was worth the money spent. Enjoyed the entire tour but especially liked the history on Lady Chablis. Had never heard her. Great job Sargon!!
This was a fabulous tour. You explore the history of Savannah that is underrepresented. Understanding the often hidden history of Savannah helped make our trip more meaningful. Sargon was informative, charismatic, kind, and knowledgeable. I could not recommend this tour enough!
My favorite part of the tour was learning about underrepresented voices in history and listening to a fabulous storytelling. Sargon was great! Book this tour right away. Thank you.
Tour guide was great! We learned a lot of interesting facts! Lots of information we wouldn’t have known from just walking around on our own. Wonderful insight into the history of Savannah. Thanks
I have not written reviews of late, but Sargon, our guide was SO great I just have to do so! Not only did Sargon know history and architecture and art and botany - all above and beyond, but also the history of slaves and slavery, too. Savannah is not big on signage about slavery, and Sargon filled in a lot of the blanks. Sargon also shared the lives of amazing women who transformed their communities, rich and poor alike. The history of the LGBTQ community and their influence in Savannah was also shared by this delightful, wise and entertaining born storyteller. Wonderful!!
This was an excellent tour. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable about Savannah’s history and their enthusiasm was evident throughout the tour. I would highly recommend!
I am so glad that I took this tour. My tour guide was very knowledgeable and entertaining. This was one of the highlights during my first visit to Savannah. A refreshing gem of Savannah history!
Don't leave Savannah until you have done this tour. The trolley tours or other walking tours will give you the stories you expect, but this tour provided us with the context needed for a full understanding of Savannah's history. Great for all ages, and the guide is very willing to accommodate different needs by finding shade and seating at each stop. My 10 year old loved it and decided to do some additional research afterwards. We learned so much.
Easily one of the best activities we did in Savannah! So refreshing and uplifting to hear about these unsung heroes. The guide was fantastic—such a dynamic storyteller. I wish there was a tour like this in every city!
We are traveling this summer with our two kids and we’re looking for something different than the normal stories about the South. We were not disappointed. Our guide was so knowledgeable about the less mainstream stories of Savannah, highlighting the contributions made by those who were indigenous to the area, enslaved by those who came to settle the area and women who dared to step outside of the norms of their time. Definitely worth the two hour walk - would highly recommend to anyone looking for more than what you learned in history books.
I appreciated going on a tour that wasn’t all about explaining what straight white men did. There’s are so many stories of BIPOC and women and queer heroes. I ended up getting the tour guide all to myself. It’s nice they don’t cancel the tours for a minimum number of customers. She knew so much about history, preservation, and even botany. It was 2 hours and we visited quite a few squares and stopped in front of several historic homes, ending up near Forsyth Park. You’ll need to walk back to your vehicle so perhaps park in between the beginning and ending squares.
Sargon is such a knowledgeable, passionate, and dedicated guide who shared the stories of extraordinary, complicated, and underrepresented people who were influential in Savannah’s history and ultimately helped shape the city’s present. Her enthusiasm for her adopted hometown inspires those of us visiting Savannah to dig deeper into its stories and return to learn more. Highly recommend!!!
