Historic Savannah Walking Tour

We really enjoyed our tour! The guide, Paul, was enthusiastic and very knowledgeable about Savannah’s history. We had been on tours with a few other companies and felt that this one was the best- more info that connected multiple eras in Savannah. We highly recommend this company!

Would give 10 stars if I could, and not just because of the ratings inflation that has seemingly to 5 star averages for so much of the competition. James was one of the most knowledgeable and engaging guides I’ve ever had. To wit: I found out about this tour because I was wandering Savannah solo the day prior, overheard what sounded like great energy, and approached the group to get his info! Booked for the very next day and it exceeded my expectations! I will say: this tour is for you if you like to go deep, have a decently long attention span, and find it charming when other people are passionate about a subject. If you would rather move from topic to topic quickly, cover a lot of ground, want ghost stories, there are tons of other options in town!

This was an in-depth history told through Savannah's squares, presented with great enthusiasm. The City truly came alive, and we got to see many important and beautiful buildings. The only negative (and this is small) is that at some so the stops, our presenter began to speak before everyone had arrived. Otherwise, very highly reciommended.

This was a great tour. James did an amazing job bringing history to life with detail about the Revolutionary and Civil Wars as well as the history of how Savannah came to be what it is today! Highly recommended!

He shared so many interesting facts about the city, its history, and its architecture, and he was able to answer all of our questions. He was very knowledgeable, personable, and professional, making the tour both informative and enjoyable. I highly recommend this walking tour. It was absolutely worth the money!

We had a wonderful walking tour with James. My husband and I were the only ones on the tour that day, so James was able to hone in on what our interests were. We told him we had just read the book "Demon of Unrest" about the start of the Civil War, so he focused on the history of that time. But we also learned about the early settlers and what happened after the Civil War.

A great historical walking tour. Our guide Sara was really excellent. She told us facts and stories for the full 2-hour tour, and was engaging and interesting the whole time. And she was witty too. If you’re in Savannah and have a few hours to walk around the historic district and learn about the city’s interesting history, I strongly recommend this tour. An A+!!!

Guide is passionate & well-versed in the area’s history since the city’s founding. While it was hot, it was not intolerable and many of the squares are shady. There is some uneven pavement so care is needed. A good value for your time we thought!

This was a truly outstanding tour. The tour guide connected the buildings and geography with a sweep of history of this amazing city. It was interesting and held our attention firmly for the two hours. The guy did a great job asking for questions and then answering them expertly. He was smart enough to park us in the shade on this hot Jorge day. We loved it and would take another tour with this individual anytime.

Unbelievably please with Savannah True History Tours. Brandon was the best tour guide I've had in Savannah. My wife and I have visited the city together numerous times and we always book 2-3 tours while we are there and Savannah History Tours was head and shoulders above the rest. We took the Revolutionary War tour on our final day in the city and my only regret is that we did not go at the beginning of the trip. We would have booked the Civil War tour as well. It's worth mentioning that Brandon began his career as a Park Ranger and it was apparent in our experience with him. Knowledgeable, eloquent, and grounded in truth. There was no speculation and Brandon adapted the tour easily to our questions and interests. We will be booking with him again on our next visit.

The guide was great. She told very entertaining fact based stories. The pacing was nice. We covered a lot of ground and weren’t too tired at the end.

We took the 2 hour Savannah history tour and it was excellent. The tour website describes the tour well. It's not surprising that this company has won a number of awards as Savannah's best tour. Don't skimp and just take the 1 hour tour. There is so much to cover even the 2 hour tour left you wanting for more. This is the perfect introductory tour for your visit to Savannah. Savannah is a city of squares each with its own contribution to the history of Savannah. We truly felt the history of the Savannah and what makes the city unique.

As a true history buff, Brandon delived his tour with enthusiasm showing his love of Savannah's history. What a supurb tour. Excelllent range of fact-based information and smaller groups. We would highly recommend! In fact, we enjoyed two of these tours with the Savannah True History tours. By far, the best! Definitely book and enjoy!

James was awesome! He is very knowledgeable and well prepared with photos/maps throughout the tour. The walk was easy and covered wide range of topics that other tours did not. I don’t know much about American history but still found myself deeply interested all the time. Highly recommended!

James did a wonderful job of telling the history of Savannah and mixing it with personal stories of the people - making it so much more interesting than a school lecture session. His enthusiasm for history definitely showed through and made the tour one of the most enjoyable that I have ever taken!

This was a great way to spend two hours and get a terrific overview of the history of Savannah. Our guide James was engaging and thoroughly knowledgeable and we really appreciated the chronological approach to Savannah's past as we passed from square to square. You will come away from this tour with an appreciation of the tenacity of the founders such as James Ogelthorpe and his unique partnership with Chief Tomochichi, the resourcefulness of Mayor Dr. Richard Arnold who saved the city from Sherman's destructive march as well as modern figures such as Jim Williams featured in the best seller Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. James welcomes questions and has a clear mastery of the subject matter which lets him deliver it in a compelling way.

We enjoyed the Historic Savannah Walking Tour led by our guide, James. It was a two hour journey around historic squares with a stop at Colonial Park Cemetery. The information was voluminous and fast paced. At times it seemed like too much information, but we appreciated the wealth of knowledge and animated delivery by James. Be prepared to walk, listen intently and learn significant historic information in a well organized timeline of this picturesque city.

You’ll receive an enormous amount of information in a beautiful setting, so much so you’ll want to review your history when you return home. There is light walking involved with several areas offering seating in the squares. We had an amazing tour guide, Brandon. There was no question he could not answer, so enthusiastic about the subject matter.

Our guide Brandon was incredible — the way he told the story of the city had me completely locked in. We covered the square parks, the layout, the real history, and how it all connects. It wasn't just facts; it was immersive storytelling. Savannah has this eerie-beautiful energy with a magical mist, and this tour deepened my connection to it. I felt so drawn to the city and the geography made sense. Do this tour early in your trip — it will change how you experience the rest of Savannah. Highly recommend.

We have taken many history walking tours in many cities, and this has been the best so far. The tour operator/owner was very engaging and very well-informed. We appreciated his commitment to historical accuracy. It was obvious he did a tremendous amount of studying of the history of Savannah. I especially appreciated the pacing of the tour, which featured a good mix of walking and stopping at locations with seating. After the tour, we felt well-equipped to go back to visit sites highlighted during the tour. It was the best experience we had during our three days in Savannah.

Make sure you have something to drink and good shoes. My guide was super friendly and knowledgeable. Loved her.

Two thumbs way up! The walking tour was engaging, well paced and full of interesting history! Our guide spoke loudly, stopped in the shade with occasional opportunities to sit and was very entertaining. We all enjoyed!

A knowledgeable guide who provided very detailed and lengthy descriptions of the origin of Savannah, through several of the city squares. More lecture than walking and lacked cultural, religious history or mention of enslavement which was disappointing.

This was an exceptionally interesting history walk. It actually was different from one that we took in 2013 – different guides emphasize different aspects of Savannah’s history. It was just so informative and the group was small so we could ask questions of the prof who led it.

The Historic Savannah Walking Tour is an excellent introduction to the city's rich heritage and historical significance. Lots of info and great storytelling packed into two hours! Be aware that the tour ends about 3/4 of a mile from where it starts. Tour company operator was pleasant to deal with.

I can’t imagine a history (walking) tour being better. Brandon was a walking encyclopedia (wikipedia?) with a wry sense of humor. We were on our feet for 80% of the two hours, yet the time flew by. Absolutely the best history tour in Savannah. The guide delivers the "true" history of Savannah in a fun and interesting style. Brandon is a knowledgeable historian and gifted story teller. I highly recommend if you want to learn Savannah's history, and have a good time.
