Itinerary
Here we begin our tour and discuss how high society guests of the Carnegie family would have arrived on the Island.
Seated in the shade, we discuss the first several hundred years of this islands' inhabitants, from the Native Americans and Spanish to British and Americans, and we visualize the now-demolished four-story mansion that the family of Revolutionary War hero Nathanael Greene built here.
We visit this scenic marsh front cemetery where Greene family members as well as Revolutionary War General "Light-Horse Harry" Lee were buried. Learn why this famous American was buried here far from his home and family.
We wander the vast servants' quarters where up to 100 servants lived and catered to the Carnegie family. We enter the historic laundry facilities, admire ancient live oak trees, and even marvel at centuries-old olive trees planted by the Greene family over 200 years ago!
We end with the grand finale of the massive ruins of the Carnegie mansion, built in the late 1800s. We learn about this mega-rich family, how they ended up on Cumberland, and how they lived and played here, not just at the mansion but also at the spectacular nearby Pool House, which you may view and even enter.

Peter was a wonderful guide. He was very informative and kind. He shared a lot of very interesting history with us.
Deb was our guide on this very rainy day She came over on the ferry with us and chatted with us the entire time So we learned some before we even arrived on the island Thankfully, there was no thunder and lightning close enough to want us to cancel the trip We walked around with Deb in our rain gear all day and she was a wealth of information We did not see a whole lot of Wildlife because of the rain however, we learned a lot about the island and the families that had there We saw a number of horses and noticed how skinny they looked While we waited for the ferry, the rain let up a little bit, and we saw some manatees at the shoreline Walking through the Maritime Forest, even in the rain, was very very magical For those of you looking to learn and have an adventure we highly recommend this tour
I'm so glad I booked the walking tour. The guide gave us a lot of information about the families who lived there and their history. She also told us about the name and how it got the name.
It was extremely informative with a thorough review of the history of Cumberland Island. There was opportunity to ask questions at all times and they were completely answered. It was very hot so we stopped for water breaks and sat at picnic tables from time to time during the wonderfully detailed narrative. Our guide was so friendly and knowledgeable, very considerate and charming. We greatly enjoyed the tour and the time we spent with her.
A remote discovery. Interesting how the Carnegies lived back then. Bring water, snacks and bug spray. The staff was a little over bearing. Similar to Hall monitors in grade school. During a brief orientaton on the island, the Forest ranger yelled directly at us only 2 bikes in the bunch, dont ride on the trails. Got it. At the Dungeon ruins a park ranger van came behind us so i moved out of the way to not get run over and he said "dont ride in the grass" I replied I moved over for you to pass. speeding trucks on the main 1 way road was a little dangerous. Outside of the Employees, It was a great visit.
Unbelievable tour of the entire Cumberland Island with detailed information by a very good guide named Jona. The island "road" is bumpy but you get to experience the entire island, seeing it's nature at its best including the various wild animals on the island.
Guide Deb was informative and personable. We all agreed to continue the tour despite heavy rain and had a great time! We will be back!
Our tour guide, Ben English, was an excellent guide. He was knowledgeable, very pleasant and he gave us a great understanding of the island- along with some interesting stories that we you can’t find in a book! Great tour and we thank you. We highly recommend! Catherine & Richard McCrary
We absolutely loved our Cumberland Island walking tour in the rain. ⛈️ 🤣 David is an incredible tour guide. His knowledge and presentation are beautifully done without lots of joking. Our group of 4 enjoyed the tour very much.
Jamie is extremely knowledgeable about the history about the area. We could tell she really likes what she does. We had a great time.
Great walking tour that will tell you the history of the island along with the history of the structures on the island. Very informative! Deb, our guide, did a great job. We saw many of the horses on the island and a foal while we were there. April was the perfect time for a tour. We had a great, cool breeze while on the island. The ferry boat is air conditioned inside if you need cooling off after!
Very Enjoyable! Our guide was knowledgeable and fun! Well worth the time to learn about Cumberland Island.
A great tour, I never knew there was so much history to Cumberland Island from the colonial era to the gilded age. Deb knew so much and guided us great on a hot day.
Excellent tour! Sonia our guide was superb- friendly, knowledgable and efficient. This is the experience you want from a tour guide and tour company. We highly recommend Molly’s!
Sonya was fantastic, amazing, knowledgeable, informative and a few more. Had a great time
We just did the 2 hour walking tour of Cumberland Island with Molly's Tours. We learned so much and our guide made it easy and enjoyable to do so. Our guide kept us right on schedule without feeling rushed. I would highly recommend this tour if you want just a taste of Cumberland and only have a few hours.
Deb did a great job of sharing the story of Cumberland island as she took us around the Dungeness ruins and surrounding area of the southern part of the island. She was able to answer questions and was entertaining.
Debbie was fantastic! Well worth the time to get an overview of the island's history.
Megan was a very pleasant and though still learning all the details of the very complicated history of Cumberland a well informed guide. She stopped n the shade when needed and had recommendations for local attractions
Our tour of Cumberland Island was amazing! Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable, taking us through the fascinating history of the island and the Carnegies. It was a wonderful way to see the island and an unforgettable day!
So glad we did the walking tour with our EXCELLENT guide, David. The island and its history is facinating. David, as a guide, had the perfect balance of having a depth of historical knowledge /passion for sharing history, but delivering it in an easy going, relatable way. Highly recommend the tour.
This two hour walking tour provided some great information about the history of Cumberland Island and its inhabitant over the years. I loved how they included information about native populations prior to European settlement as well as some information about the ecology of the island including the wild horses. They even offered some great recommendations for dinner in St. Mary’s.
We did the Dungeness Walking Tour. Sonia was our guide and she was so knowledgeable about the history of the island! We had visited Cumberland island previously but learned a lot more on this trip by doing the tour! We highly recommend it!
The history provided by our guide was fascinating and brought all of the pieces of the puzzle together. He clearly has a passion for it. I would highly recommend a walking tour rather than just milling about on your own.
Megan did a fantastic job of sharing the local history of Cumberland Island and the walking tour was well paced.
Our tour guide, Sonya was fantastic! She was very friendly and extremely knowledgeable about the history of the island and those who have lived there. I would definitely recommend this tour. Oh and seeing the wild horses awesome.
Sonya was an AMAZING tour guide! She made the various periods of history come alive. She was a wealth of knowledge and information. Would highly recommend this tour and tour guide! Appreciated all the information on the website (ferry links, National park links, etc.). Also appreciated getting to talk with Molly to help us figure out tour dates and options. Look forward to trying out other tours in the future with Molly's Old South Tours!
Marry was a great storyteller! She brought history to life to make our tour engaging! She also pointed out things that were unique to the day so we could learn about everything we were experiencing like see a submarine!
We had a wonderful time. The guide was very helpful, pleasant, and knowledgeable. He discussed the history of the island as well as many of the plants and animals. He gladly answered any questions we had.
Informative history of people who inhabited Cumberland Island. We walked about 3 miles over about 2hrs. Beautiful scenery and well worth it if you want to know about the history of Cumberland.
We had a very nice tour with David from Molly's Old South tours. He met us at the ferry and introduced himself before we boarded. He was very interesting in his discussions about the buildings that were on the property and the history of the property going all the way back to the Spaniards in the 1500s. He was well versed in the Carnegie family history as well. It was an interesting and informative tour.
Deb was our tour guild and she was wonderful! She used to be a ranger and a science teacher. Beautiful island that you could spend 5-6 hrs on if you wanted to see both the historical sites and the beach area. Highly recommend taking this tour!!!
Had an amazing time learning about Cumberland Island's history on the walking tour. Highly recommend - especially before the bugs get too bad!
This was my second tour with Molly’s, Ben our guide did an excellent job! He was knowledgeable and engaging and interacted well with our group. I’d highly recommend this walking tour of Cumberland!
Debbie our guide was very knowledgeable and informative and made our visit more meaningful. Highly recommend this tour.
A wonderful informative and fun adventure - our guide Deb did an amazing job and her historical knowledge of the island was impressive
That was fantastic and I really recommend this to everyone , was an unique experience. We became familiar to the history of the comberland Island.
We had a great walking tour of Cumberland Island. Deb was our tour guide and she was terrific. Very knowledgable and entertaining. We loved the tour and learned so much about a place that is pretty removed from the mainland. Highly recommend Molly's Tours and highly recommend Deb.
Debra provided fun and interesting facts regarding the historical significance of Cumberland Island. I highly recommend Molly Old South Tours.............
David wss very informative with a pleasant personality. As the other group of 4 did not show up, my husband and I had a private tour. It was a beautiful day on Cumberland Island. We saw lots of horses and learned a great deal about the island and the families who lived there. I would recommend this tour to anyone wanting to learn more about this special island.
Walk is easy, smooth and level throughout the island. Mr. English. Shared a range of fascinating information about the islands history and the Carnegie family residence. I intend to go back and rent a bike.
This tour was a great and easy way to visit Cumberland Island and learn of its history. The walk was easy and the vistas beautiful,
Debbie our guide was so knowledgeable. Every question someone asked she gave a more than question, she gave a full description. I would recommend this tour for any age.
Our guide was very knowledgeable, however we found it difficult to hear her because she had a strained, scratchy voice which she said was due to the pollen. She continued to talk as we walked so it was difficult to hear much of what she was saying. Would have been more helpful if we walked to a point of interest then stopped to hear what she had to say.
David was our guide. He was super knowledgeable and full of interesting stories about Cumberland's people and places. (We were with a cycling group, although not riding that day.) I daresay it was one of the best guided tours I have experienced. The island is truly beautiful!
David was our tour guide. I am very knowledgeable about Cumberland Island's human and natural history. David was accurate and entertaining. He has thoroughly researched many aspects of Cumberland. I highly recommend Molly's Old South Tours and David as a guide
Fantastic tour! Deb was our tour guide and she was great! She's so knowledgeable and passionate about this beautiful island. The history of this island is amazing! We highly recommend this tour!
We took this tour on December 30th, 2024. Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable. We were a bit disappointed that the tour ended 40 minutes early at the cemetery. He did offer to answer any questions on the way back to the ferry terminal. We felt he could have talked about some of the other structures around the Dungeness Ruins. He also didn’t ask for ticket confirmation which was a bit odd if someone wanted to tagalong. For the money and your cut short by almost half the time, I’d recommend doing the audio tour the NPS offers on your phone.
What a fun time! The weather was absolutely awful when we got on the ferry. We were super unsure if we made the right decision. As we got off the ferry our tour guide Debbie was there waiting for us. She was so delightful and packed our brains with so much knowledge about the island and the people who lived there. Lots of fun and interesting tidbits to make it more relatable. We really enjoyed our time and it was all due to our wonderful Debbie! We both echoed that we wouldn't have had a good time just wandering the island without the tour. Thanks again!
