It was awsome! Every single person was super nice first time surfing and I could stand up on my second wave! Shan was an amazing employee/instructer/ best friend he cheered me on and gave me a high five every time I caught a wave. If anyone is reading this it is so much better than what I’m saying it is!
Took my first surfing lesson here and immediately came back for a longer period to follow more lessons. The instructors are very professional, patient and supportive, and gave me a lot of confidence. The lessons are not only fun, but the overall atmosphere is great too. Everyone is very friendly and makes sure you have the best time. I felt at home right away. Before I came to Ride a Wave Surf School in Weligama, I’d had a few bad days surfing and was starting to lose confidence. Shan really helped me out — he made everything fun again while also giving me great technical advice that genuinely improved my surfing. The best surfboard rental on the southern coast – well equipped, with all boards new and in great condition. You can tell they really take care of them. This place is not just a rental, but also a proper surf school. I took lessons with Shan, and he’s an excellent teacher. We lived in Sri Lanka for three months and rented here exclusively the whole time. We'll definitely come back to surf with Shan again.

Highly recommended! We had four surf lessons with SHAN. It was truly amazing. He is an excellent instructor. You learn and gain experience. He is the god of surfing!! For real! He takes the time to address each mistake individually. In our fourth lesson, we mastered surfing hard boards and executing precise turns. It was wonderful. SHAN was a funny guy and open-minded. We had a blast!

DONT RENT A BOARD! SCAMMERS! Pre damaged boards that they try and scam you on. They threaten to call the police. If they do just say go ahead they get all sheepish.

Great place to rent a board from, the guys are all super friendly and all want to make sure you have the best time possible so the vibe is always good! Also good prices on longboards, cheaper than most other places for great boards!! Highly recommend renting from ride a wave, and I'm sure their lessons are great too. I rented different boards for 3 weeks and never had any issues. The service is great, the boards are great and they make you check every board before to avoid any kind of conflicts about damages. I can highly recommend and would always choose them again!

Great surf school – from the very first steps to improving your technique. Hasa is an amazing instructor who spreads enthusiasm and teaches really well. Unfortunately, a back injury kept me from taking more lessons, but it’s a good reason to come back.
Brilliant 4 days surfing with Ride a Wave - the instructors were super friendly, calm and fun! There was no hard sell from them, just a very polite and happy atmosphere. My boys are aged 10,11 and 13 - they went from large foam boards to hard boards in just a matter of days! We forgot our shoes and hat on the beach on the last day and they even drove to our villa to drop the stuff off - what customer service!
The teachers taught us very well and very specifically. Thanks to their teaching, we were able to enjoy surfing within an hour! Surfing was my bucket list and I was able to achieve it.

First time surfing. I had two lessons, if I were here for longer I would have done it every day! So much fun, even falling off. I had Shan as my instructor, he was kind, professional, patient and on my second lesson I stood up and managed to surf. The waves are kind to beginners and water shallow with soft sand under, no rocks or stones. I’m so pleased my first surfing experience was in Sri Lanka and recommend anyone to come here to enjoy the good people, the good food and the good vibes on Weligama beach

I took lessons with Shan, he was recommended from my surf instructor I had in India. What an amazing experience. Shan is really nice, patient and he made me go from foamy to hard top board. I would only recommend but going to Ride a wave. The owner is an angel and so are the other instructors.

There’s real guidance, personalized advice, and amazing support from the coach. In just three sessions, I was already able to paddle up, all while feeling safe and confident. They place strong emphasis on safety, which really helps you feel comfortable in the water, even when you’re far out. Also, be ready for their sense of humor, they can be pretty sarcastic at times! Don’t be surprised if they make fun of you a little, it’s always good-natured and part of the fun. They’re super friendly and genuinely want you to improve. Highly recommended!
Ride a Wave helped me find my love for surfing! This is truly the place to go for beginners or if you are looking to have some fun waves. What an amazing experience! Finally I found a great teacher in Sri Lanka that managed to fix my mistakes in order for me to catch waves easily with a better technical understanding. Ride a Wave Surf School are my number 1 choice for surfing in Weligama, I started with no confidence & no experience, & after 5 lessons have left wanting to come back & practice more surfing! Shan was great at explaining what we needed to be aware of, how to be safe in the water, what to fix on our positions when we were practicing & letting us practice on the board multiple times until we were confident getting on the water. If you’re a beginner or an intermediate surfer I would suggest you check them out, I really enjoyed my lessons with the team & felt looked after the entire time!

So far, my experiences in Sri Lanka have been overwhelmingly positive, and the people have always been welcoming. Unfortunately, today was the first time that wasn’t the case. At the “Ride a Wave Surf School,” I felt treated with condescension. While their English was poor (with the exception of one individual), communication was challenging on both ends, and it was clear that they were not making much of an effort to ensure I understood or felt comfortable. The young staff member, probably around 15-17 years old, made it obvious that he didn’t take me seriously. He seemed to think of me as an inexperienced surfer who wasn’t worth his attention. His lack of motivation was evident, and he made jokes about me to his colleagues in his language. And yes, I could understand enough to get the gist of it. The reason I didn’t seek out another provider was simply because we were looking for a shaded spot, which is available there for a fee, and we didn’t feel like searching further. Let me remind you—you're here to earn money from us. Our payments are what sustain your business, your livelihood. That’s no way to treat customers or the people who are helping keep your business running. The young man still has a lot to learn about respect and professionalism. I’m giving an additional star because the older gentleman at the counter was polite, despite the language barrier, and the one instructor I saw appeared to have potential. My advice: If that young man behaves this way with other customers, it would be best to call him out on it. He needs to understand the impact of his actions, and you can then move on to find a better experience elsewhere.
