Still the best rice and curry in unawatuna ♥️
Honestly the best meal i had in sri lanka! Im glad i did this on my last day because it wouldve raised my expectations of all my other meals too high! Sasangi and her brother (?) Were fantastic and great at providing all the information i needed and suggesting swaps for ingredients not available in the uk. They sent me home happy and full and armed with leftovers and all the recipes, including ones we didnt cook. I cant wait to try them at home!
It was a wonderful personal experience cooking with Wasantha’s family. The information provided at the markets was fantastic and we chose our own ingredients. I cooked with my son and can’t wait to try the recipes at home.
Great cooking class run by lovely family. I really enjoyed the Galle market visit - particularly the vegetable market which was so colourful and full of new (to me) fruit and veg. We also bought tuna from the Galle fish market direct from the fishermen. I leant a lot from Wasantha when we cooked the 5 curries (4 veg and tuna). It was a small group of 6 and it was nice to eat lunch together at the end. Highly recommend.
We had a great time cooking with Sasa. Our experience started off with a visit to the fish, fruit & vegetable markets in Galle with Sam. We were able to choose the vegetables to include in the curries. We then returned to the kitchen to help prepare several curries and Sasa explained all about the cooking processes and spices. We cooked: beetroot curry, tuna steak curry, cucumber curry, pumpkin curry and eggplant moju as well as rice and poppadoms. After preparing the dishes we enjoyed eating them for lunch alongside the others in the class. It was a fabulous experience which we would definitely recommend.

We had a delicious dinner at Wasantha's charming restaurant. The food was so flavorsome and fresh - highly recommend a meal there.
A brilliant start to our trip. Sam took us to the fish market to buy our tuna, then on to the fruit and vegetable market in Galle. His knowledge and stories were great. Then back to cook 5 amazing curry dishes with his daughter. A great teacher and brilliant cook. Lots of recipes to take home and a delicious meal. I would highly recommend this experience.
First an excellent market visit with Sam who explained everything and shared interesting stories. Then his daughter, Sas and family shared their detailed knowledge of how to make 5 curries. And then I ate! It was fantastic. They were very generous.
We had a wonderful time at this experience. Sam and his daughter were amazing guides. They took so much care in explaining all the different ingredients and processes. It was very hygienic and everyone handling food took the utmost care in ensuring everything was clean. And the food was delicious! Would highly recommend this experience.
Thoroughly enjoyed the trip to market and cooking class. Got to choose the vegetables.
We had an amazing 4 hours. First went with Sam ( Wasantha’s husband ) to the market to choose fish and vegetables where he explained what all the weird and wonderful vegetables were. Then came back and Wasantha told us about all the spices that we were going to cook with and the traditional methods used. We then proceeded to help cook everything and then had what we cooked for lunch . YUMM. A must do experience while. Thanks Wasantha and Sam
Enjoyed this cooking class complete with market shopping. Cooking was hands on, easy to follow + more than just Dahl. We cooked beetroot, okra, pumpkin, banana blossom, rice + tuna. The recipes were shared so no need to take notes. After cooking we got to eat our delicious cooking. If you enjoy cooking + learning new cuisines, then check this cooking class out!
Fantastic. Began with a tour of the local fish and veg markets to buy the ingredients with Sam, a great guide who speaks excellent English. Then the main event with Wasantha learning to cook a full Sri Lankan curry lunch. She is very experienced and a great teacher, which showed in the delicious meal which we then ate. Best meal we’ve had l in Sri Lanka!
My mother and I were lucky enough to have the cooking class with Wasantha alone at their lovely place. The whole experience was wonderful, from going to the fish and vegetable market with Sam and learning about local produce and history - to Wasantha’s patient and skilled cooking tips. We learned so much and the food was both the best and most beautiful meal we had in Sri Lanka! They are a good hearted and knowledgeable family and we are very grateful for the experience :) I am also vegetarian and Wasantha was so respectful and careful keeping the fish separate! Highly recommended for vegans and vegetarians as well! Thank you for having us! We will keep making the recipes back home in Norway :)
After a bumpy start with organisation regarding tuktuks we were delighted to find that we were the only clients that morning. We visited the fish market and vegetable market where Sasa explained all the different types of vegetables that could be used in cooking and their associated health benefits. We were asked to pick out four different vegetables to make curry with so we experimented with banana blossom, avocado, aubergine and green beans. Then onto the fish market where the variety was amazing and it was so cheap! Yellowfin tuna was selected as the main fish curry ingredient. Then back to Wasantha’s and a really interesting, hands-on cooking experience using all kinds of spices and methods of cooking. Then the two of us had the pleasure of eating the fruit of our labours which was a delight, very tasty but too much as we had four different vegetables curries and a tuna curry with rice. Sasa was an excellent host and teacher and her cooking skill was obvious. She also sent us her recipes via WhatsApp and I am looking forward to trying them at home. Overall, a really good experience. Thank you
Truly authentic Sri Lankan cooking experience, superb from shopping for the food we cooked in the market place to cooking outside with Wasantha . Learnt so much .
We had an amazing time today with Wasantha. We learned how to cook a variety of curries, how to make coconut milk, how to prepare locally grown vegetables in a traditional way and all about the different spices used in Sri Lankan cooking. We enjoyed everything we made for an enormous lunch, without doubt the best meal we have eaten since arriving in Sri Lanka. Wasantha shared all the recipes and we are looking forward to having a go at home. We highly recommend this experience.
What a wonderful experience beginning with a very informative trip to the Old Dutch market in Galle a short journey away. We chose our ingredients and then back to Wasantha’s. The preparation and dedication to first class cooking was incredible. It’s a real family affair and everything is freshly prepared and precise. The 4 curries (3 vegetable and 1 Tuna) were amazing and eating with our fingers added to the authenticity. Even if you don’t attend the cookery class then you really have to experience the restaurant. Hospitality and food of the highest order. Make this a must do, you won’t regret it.
We really enjoyed the whole of this experience. Arrived at 10 am and were taken by Tuk Tuk to the fish market in Galle. There we chose fish for one of our dishes before moving to the Dutch vegetable market where Sam showed us a fantastic selection and helped us choose which ones to take back to the kitchen with us. Back in the kitchen, Wasantha explained all about the different herbs and spices and showed us how to prepare rice, coconut milk and all the different curries from the ingredients that we’d chosen. They were all absolutely delicious. It was a fantastic experience and the taste and flavours were incredible. One of the best five hours we’ve spent. We would definitely recommend this experience.
We had an absolutely fantastic time at Wasantha’s cooking class yesterday. From the moment we arrived, we felt incredibly welcome by her family. Wasantha is warm, knowledgeable and clearly passionate about sharing traditional cooking techniques and local flavours. When we arrived, we were informed there was a power outage, but that didn’t lessen the experience at all. Everything was handled calmly and professionally, and the class continued smoothly. If anything, it added to the authenticity and made the afternoon even more memorable. The class was hands-on, well organised and very engaging. We learned so much about the ingredients, the spices and the cultural background behind each dish. Everything was explained clearly, and we were encouraged to get involved at every step, which made it both educational and fun. The food was absolutely delicious — fresh, flavourful and far better than we could have imagined making ourselves. We left full, happy and inspired to try the recipes again at home. Highly recommend this experience to anyone wanting a genuine, enjoyable and hands-on cooking class. Thank you, Wasantha and family, for such a memorable day!
We had a wonderful experience cooking with Wasantha. The visit to the market to select fruits and vegetables for preparation was really informative and fun (tuk tuk ride!). But the real treat was learning from Wasantha who has an inate sense of food and is a great teacher.
Thought to be 12 th highest rated course of this kind in Indian Ocean region. Easy to see why. She takes great pride in her approach and involves everyone. We were a small group of British American German and Malaysian who got on great. Walked away with 20 recipes ! Great fun.
Super experience with a ultra skilled and proffessional lady that cooks like a queen. Food was amazing. 👍🏻 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Very friendly family business Gives a thorough walk through of how to do the dishes You also get 27 recipes so you can make them at home Would really recommend
We enjoyed the experience of going to the market, choosing ingredients and then the class. Wasantha, her daughter and boyfriend were all super friendly and we got lots of recipes afterwards. The other people in the class were also lovely and we had a bit of a laugh. We could probably have done with being more hands on and the noisy fan made it quite difficult to hear at times.
Myself, my mum and Uncle went to Wasantha’s cooking class, the venue is lovely, Wasantha and her family are wonderful people. Going to the markets to choose our produce was such a great experience, the the cooking class with Wasantha and her many years of knowledge was just beyond our expectations, to say we enjoyed it, is an understatement, we will remember that experience forever. Thank you and your beautiful family Wasantha. Sam, Annie & Chris .
Excellent journey through the secrets of Sri Lanka’s food. First stop at fish market, then at fruit and vegetable market with explanations of all types of fish, fruit and vegetables. Then cooking our groceries with explanations of all spices and cooking tips. Each fish, vegetable and fruit needs a different blend of spices and Wasantha guides you through. We also made out own coconut milk!
An amazing experience from start to finish. The trip by tuk tuk to the market to buy the fresh ingredients was wonderful and we were treated to a thorough explanation of every vegetable at the market stall. We got to choose the vegetables for the curries. Back to the restaurant to learn how to cook them. Wasantha is a treasure and so happy to share her knowledge. All the explanations are clear and there’s some hands on opportunities to get involved with the cooking. And then you get to sit down and eat it all! Before you leave you are given lots of recipes sent electronically, all hand written. This is my favourite thing we’ve done in Sri Lanka so far and it’s so nice that it’s a family set up. Highly highly recommend. Book it, you won’t regret it
We started by tuktuk with a visit of the local market in Galle with Wasanthas daughter and son. In the second part Wasantha explained all the ingredients and cooking very detailed and guided us in various cooking tasks . In genereal you could really feel her love for the craft and there will be a recipe book coming soon from her. Great family and cooking class experience.
We had a very good experience .It was worth more than the price we paid.Wasantha explained all the recipes in detail, she gave us many cooking tips. She was very kind, humble and patient. Her son and daughter also took us to the vegetable market we had great fun shopping together.I would recommend people to visit them either to learn to cook the local cuisine or to eat at their restaurant.God Bless them.
Best place for traditional rice and curry ,,delicious food and delicious people!!small family restaurant the people are very kind and generous ,food is yummy 😋 best riesce and curry ever must try who visit unawatuna ,highly recommend!!
The cooking experience was fabulous. We were taken to Galle fish market and the Dutch vegetable market to choose our produce to cook with. Everything explained to us. Then Wasantha talked us through all the spices, showed us rice cooking and making coconut milk. We were involved with preparation and everyone had a role. It was a very immersive experience. We then ate all the curries we prepared! Pumpkin, pineapple, beetroot, aubergine and tuna curry. It was well worth the money. There were 8 in our group and it felt just right. The curries were fantastic. Thank you for a wonderful 5 hours!
Wasantha and her family were delightful. Very knowledgeable sharing lots of cooking tips. We visited the market and choose which veg/fruit we wanted to cook and then helped prepare and cook 5 very different delicious curry’s. The icing on the cake was eating the delicious food afterwards. Wasantha is very passionate about her cooking ensuring everyone in the group gets involved. If you can only choose 1 cooking class choose this one.. it’s fab you won’t be disappointed
Her generosity in sharing her extensive knowledge. Her interactions with all participants was very positive and friendly. The experience matched our expectations.
Cook with Wasantha was a really enjoyable activity for our family of four (2 adult sons). We are all keen cooks and tend to book a cookery course wherever we go. We like shopping for the key ingredients, and with Wasantha's father showing us round the vegetable market then the fresh fish stall it was a real education. The cooking session was pretty hands on, lots of prep work fir everyone and each one of us got to make one of the finished dishes for our group lunch at the end. We particularly liked that we worked with some slightly more obscure vegetables ( frilly beans, beet, local aubergine) yet still produced delicious food. This is very much a family affair - taken to the market and driven about by the dad, taught by the daughter and the son doing lots of the background work. They are all delightful people and I definitely recommend this activity if you like your food!
Had such a lovely day starting in the vegetable and fish market and then cooking the food we bought earlier in the day. The whole family was there and it was great experience. We will be recommending to others in the future!
I’m so happy to choose the cooking class with Wasantha, I learn so much about local ingredients and spices, their local cooking techniques. Wasantha taught me a lot the tips and tricks to Cook everything and I like how we cooked a lot of vegetables with their local vegetables and fruit or the substitute with other vegetables. It doesn’t matter you know or you don’t know how to cook with her class in the end you will able to cook because she teaches how to measure the seasoning and we can create very very tasty foods. I love how they use fruits as ingredients for cooking as well
Great morning visiting the markets, explanation of different vegetables and the markets history. Lovely to be able to choose which vegetables to use for the curries. Great cooking with Sasa, clear explanations and the food at the end was delicious. Really enjoyable morning.
Great time going to the markets for the fish and vegetables. Lots of interesting vegetables we'd not seen before. Hands on cooking was great and food was pretty impressive. Lovely jungle location.
We dive deep into the experience auf Sri Lanka Cooking, going to the market with Sam and have a lot of fun with the guys in the kitchen! Even when we are just the 2 of us❣️ They are so friendly and kind while showing us the easy way of cooking delicious Food with 💓.
Cooking class with Wasantha and produce market with her husband Sam was 10/10. Its the OG original in Unawatuna. Wasantha's curry recipes have been passed down through generations and you can taste it. Their family has survived and rebuilt through the Civil War, tsunami and hearing their stories... Spend a few hours cooking with Wasantha and her family, enjoy a spread of multiple vegetarian, chicken/fish curries, you won't regret or forget it!
I had a great time going to the markets, picking out produce, then making some authentic Sri Lankan curries. Would highly recommend this class if you're in the area.
Had a lovely relaxing morning learning how to cook a fish and vegetable curries. Lots of smiles, learned new stuff and realised that the massive fuss that I make over my own curry preparation is not needed.
We had a very good time in the cooking class. It was very interesting to hear abiut all the ayurvedic treatments with the vegetables at the market in Galle! We also appreciated that at the market we could choose the vegetables and fish we wanted to cook with. Further on we really enjoyed the cooking class it self. We just wished that we could actually get to cook more rather than just cutting.. But all in all it was a very nice experience and we learned a lot about the Sri Lankan cuisine. We also really liked that we recived a lot of recepies to recreate at home!
W really enjoyed this cooking experience, very well structured, from a very lady who has a wealth of experience in Sri Lanka cooking, how to use spices, and lots of useful practical tips on cooking. Highly recommend this cooking experience.
Started the day with a trip to the market with Sam to buy the vegetables we would need. We choose 4 different vegetable curries and chicken curry. Then back to get on with the cooking. Wasantha shared lots of her knowledge and tips about washing and cooking rice, preparing spices and how to get the best flavours. We cooked sweet pumkin, beetroot and okra curries; a potato and onion dish and a chicken curry. All of the ingredients and spices were very fresh, especially the homemade coconut milk. Once all of the cooking was done we sat down to a fabulous lunch. I would definitely recommend this experience
What an experience !!!! You start with a trip to the local market with her husband Sam, a real character who you feel like you've known for years who is so knowledgeable about the local area and community. After the market you go back to cook with Wathansa who is an amazing and passionate cook, she doesn't use recipes everything is cooked with years of knowledge and experience. You can tell she loves her job ! After cooking various dishes you get to eat them, there is a mountain of food, we choose to eat with our fingers following Sri Lankas tradition and to show our appreciation to Wathansa for cooking an amazing meal. You get loads of recipes to try to cook at home. Would highly recommend.
Wasantha is a phenomenal teacher who gave so much time and attention to teaching the traditional methods of cooking. 10/10 recommend
