Santana Combo Expedition (Jeep & Levada Walk) - Shared Tour

It was a great drive across the islands seeing the impressive internal mountain range with dramatic clouds. This contrasted with the rest of the trip around some beautiful coastline and even a small Levada walk. The trip was finished with a short tour/tasting session at a Rum factory. Our driver Eddie was great and knew the roads/off roads well with an impressive knowledge of the island. I would recommend this trip to get a ‘taste’ of the island.

Well paced, enjoyable day exploring the north side of the island. Our guide was very knowledgeable and had an impressive range of languages (moving between Portuguese, English and German seamlessly throughout our trip to keep everyone included). Off roading in the jeep was fun and exhilarating but always felt very safe!

Excellent trip unlike a lot of jeep trips we were 1 jeep. Leonardo was extremely knowledgeable about everything, and was entertaining with silly jokes. The trip took us to the top of pico do areeiro where we given time to wander. The Levada walk was well organised and although unaccompanied Leonardo made sure we didn't get lost. Lunch in Santana was not included which gave us a choice of where and what to eat with Leonardo giving advice. The off road bit was good fun. Would recommend mountain expeditions

Our second tour with the same company, also did the West off-road tour the day before. Both quite different and equally enjoyable, thanks again. The drivers are excellent drivers and very knowledgeable locals, really recommend the old road version for the best experience.

We had a wonderful Jeep Tour with Antonio, who was a great guide and driver. We enjoyed the beautiful nature and learned a lot about Madeira. The Levada walk was really nice, especially the little Madeira birds at the viewpoint. Also the visit to the rum distillery was quite interesting. All in all, it was a great experience. Dino was amazing, entertaining and informative. He took a lot of trouble to show us so many points of interest and plants and fruits typical of the island. The drive was very exciting - not for the faint-hearted, but Dino knows every inch of the route like the back of his hand! We were shrouded in the clouds at the highest peak, but despite this, there were other breathtaking views and the whole day trip was really worth it.

This was one of the best excursions I've done anywhere ever! We were lucky with the weather as it was clear with good visibility across the mountains and sunny all day, bit it was such a superb experience it would have been great without it! First of all the vehicle (Land Rover Defender) was in good shape and performed brilliantly. It was open top and enabled all round views and an exciting off-road experience! More importantly, the guide EDDIE was an absolute rockstar and an excellent host. Deeply knowledgeable about the flora and fauna, locations and history, he was also a total badaxe behind the wheel and provided enough entertainment to keep us thoroughly engaged for the duration of the trip. Eight hours door to door including levada walk (easy and unaccompanied), breaks and lunch, the time just flew by and I feel like we really got to know the island. By far the best thing we've done on holiday on Madeira, I unreservedly recommend this trip.

Amazing! The tour was a perfect mix of exploration and discovery of the Island. We really enjoyed the beautiful landscapes and the tasting of some of the iconic drinks of Madeira, like rum and poncha. Our guide, Vitor, made everything even more special. He's a great driver, he grew up in Madeira (so he knows everything about the island) and most important he's a great entertainer and a wonderful human being.

The Santana Combo jeep safari was amazing!!! We went to the east side of the island and we had 8 stops which we had plenty of time to go around and take pictures. Our driver and guide, Antonio, was really informative, funny and very kind! He drove us few times off the main road, through the forest and through the local tiny roads. Which was one of the highlights of the trip as the roads were very bumpy. The Pico Arieiro, the traditional houses in Santana village and the Ponta de Sao Lourenco were my favourites. However in every stop, the views were spectacular and breathtaking. Thank you so much !

Antonio was an amazing guide. He knows a lot about the island, the history, vegetation etc. and didn't leave a single question unanswered!

Having now been to Madeira a few times over the years I would rate this tour the best yet, if you only have the chance to go on one I would choose this one to theEast side of Funchal. If you get Victor as your guide you are extremely lucky. He appeared to speak not only his native language English German & French perfectly. If I had Victor we would go again.

Extremely good tour, Victor is an excellent guide. Interesting to see the difference in the north/south of the island. Thoroughly recommend this tour.

We had a very fun and informative driver,Victor. Sadly much of the day was cloudy with low to no visibility. The end of the tour took us to some amazing coastline scenery. I would recommend it, the weather is beyond the drivers control

Recently did this tour with David around Madeira Island. This was by far one of the best tours anyone could ask for. Dave picked us up at our Funchal hotel along with another couple and showed us around. He grew up on this island and knew a lot! Highly recommend this tour, you will not regret it!

We arrived in Madeira late yesterday, and before we had even got our bearings in Funchal, we set off on an all-day tour of the east of the island with our 15yr & 12yr olds. The day was broken up really well. From Balçoes viewpoint to two short levada walks with some off-roading and rum-tasting in between. We finished off at Ponta de São Lourenço all the while being looked after, informed and entertained by our knowledgeable english-speaking guide Richardo. There was something for everyone on the trip. Would thoroughly recommend. Thank you.

I don't even know where to start, the Jeep tour was really amazing, full of positive emotions, I was able to see beautiful landscapes, I discovered new places on the Madeira island, I experienced unforgettable experiences when doing off-road, it was a great day. Not least I also loved the driver (Sr. António) who was a super careful person, friendly, smiling, attentive, helpful and good friend. No doubt it's in my plans to repeat this day again. Thank you

Our first 4x4 tour of Madeira did not disappoint. A fantastic way to see the island. Amazing viewpoints throughout and Dino our driver stopped regularly for us to take photos. In one day we took in the 3rd highest peak, a levada, a waterfall, a tasty lunch, the rum factory, and countless unbelievable views all along the way. You probably need a good head for heights, or just close your eyes when ascending the mountain roads! Great tour, great driver, great value for money, a must do when visiting Madeira. Even if it's good weather still bring a jacket as it can get cold driving through the clouds! Thank you Dino - vroom vroom!!

We have been with Mountain Expeditions twice before and found the online booking process easy, so we could be assured of a seat before we arrived. The driver was multilingual and knowledgeable about the island. Some of the off-road routes took full advantage of the lower gears on the Land Rover! We saw the variety of the vegetation from one area to the other, and different to other trips we have taken. Highly recommended and would use again when we come back to Madeira in the future. Fabulous day out with diverse itinerary. We had done minibus tours to west and nUns valley earlier in week and i now wish we had opted for Jeep tours on all three. Fun and great for seeing scenary and taking pictures. Really got feel for Laurelsilva Forest and the back road of Madeira. It was also good to get out and walk some stretched of the Lavadas… this definitely gave me a taster for coming back and doing more. We had an amazing driver Dino who kept us entertained and was very knowledgeable. Also very competent and good driving. Hadnt appreciated all the different types of fruit, vegetables and flowers or the scale of the Levadas systems and Laurelsilva forrest.

The host was incredibly knowledgeable about the island and very charismatic. They added a personal touch and when the weather got in the way of some of the itinerary, they made sure we had a great selection of other locations to visit.

Trip for someone young who like seating in the uncomfortable car.Most of the time you spend in uncomfortable car. When I asked to close the roof because of when wind which gave me a headache and feeling unwell, the driver said that he has to ask the other customers. Honestly nothing special, wouldn’t go for this trip anymore. And once more. At the beginning of the trip the driver asked us if we want to go for a lunch to the restaurant he re recommends or do we want do searching. I was interested in the trip ont the food, but businesses is business. The worse thing was the trip supposed to be in English language, but cutting cost they mixed English and French language- 😭😭😭. Talking in French made me angry.

Honestly this is the best expedition we’ve ever done across our travels. We got picked up outside our hotel exactly on time, and got introduced to the driver, Dino. Dino explained what we would be doing and where we would be going. The beautiful views that we saw were truly amazing, and Dino would always explain the island, and tell us interesting history about it too. Don’t be put off by the walks, the walks would only take about 30/40 minutes but the views you get with them were great. We were able to travel to the rum distillery and were able to try samples etc. A special thank you to Dino the tour guide. He made the guide so much fun, and he is great at what he does. He allowed us to see so much of the islands and was able to answer questions that we had. He never rushed us when stopping for pictures. Honestly recommend this tour, and if you get Dino you will be truly blessed.

Dino was the most excellent tour guide who gave us what felt like a really personal and private experience. The 4x4 trip is a MUST, especially this one as you get to see so much stuff and do such a variety of things. Dino was so funny, personable and kind to us throughout the trip and went beyond to ensure we had the most fun! He is a credit to the expedition team. This was the best excursion we have been on out of all of our holidays around Europe. Thankyou!

Our guide, Miguel, was a great host and kept us well informed throughout the trip. The trip includes 2 very easy Levada walks. The first in Ribiero Frio leads to a spectacular viewpoint of the mountains. I particularly enjoyed Pico Ariero. At 1800m, we were above the clouds! Brilliant day out, with rum tasting too.

1000% recommend. I did 8 tours over the course of my trip to Portugal and this was my favourite. The views at Pico de Airo were incredible and breathtaking, off roading was so fun, the jeep comfortable and clean, guide was professional and knowledgeable and the day was planned well.

This was a great tour!! After some misunderstandings first,which were solved professionally, rest of the day was 5☆ Our guide, David, took us to roads and places we wouldn't normally know existed. His knowledge of Madeira, living on the island, flowers, trees was very good.And his humour was top and the tour was funny. Tip: if you will avoid sitting in the back of the jeep book a private tour. We were 4 persons, 1 in front and 3 in backseat, which was no problem.

We had an excellent day out visiting the north and east of the island by jeep. Ruben our guide was extremely knowledgable, friendly and informative and really made the day special. Despite bad weather at Pico Arieiro which limited visibility the journey up the steep roads to get there was exciting and made up for this. We fitted in two short levada walks, sections of off road, an excellent meal at Santana and a visit to the stunning area of Sáo Lourenço. Great day out and another big thank you to Ruben!

We all enjoyed our excursion. The guide was knowledgeable and fun to be with. We visited some interesting places and the trip included a couple of nice walks. Make sure you dress for all weathers though, as it can change several times on the trip.

Warning First: this is an absolutely amazing experience with no exaggeration - no expectations left behind: the SUV is legendary and quite the car you want and need to discover this viewtiful and beautiful island. Props to the Guides who are beyond any cool guide I ever drove with - Nice! Going on this trip you need no headphones to listen to a seights guide voice, you get it all live and in action! The only thing I was missing were the Dinosaurs which probably will return for a trip too! Quoting Chief Guide Ricardo's words: "Let's Go!" Thanks for this experience!

The firstly booked the Nun's Valley tour with MM not knowing what to expect, but it was amazing!!! The jeep tour is such a fun way of travelling around the island as you're touring in an open top Jeep flying around at full speed... Which we loved 😅 We had Lucy on this tour, who was so knowledgeable and friendly- we really enjoyed spending half a day with her. We also saw some amazing sights and places we just wouldn't have reached using public transport. The tour was very reasonably priced at £60 ish for two people for half a day. We loved it so much we then booked onto a full day tour with Andy for Thursday to the North East, Santana, Moreno and Porto de Sao Lorenco with a couple of Levada walks thrown in! This day was also excellent and we had sooo much fun again in the Jeep going off road at points and up and down mountains, seeing amazing sights in the process. Andy was also extremely knowledgeable and exciting to be with the whole day, you really appreciate how much effort the tour guides are putting into making the whole day a good one. Anyway the price was extremely fair and I wouldn't hesitate to book onto or recommend to anyone, in fact I think it's probably a necessity to book on at least one of these tours when coming to Madeira. If we ever visit again we will try the North West 🥲 A highlight of our Madeira trip, 5/5 ⭐

A fabulous day trip, 9am pickup to 4.30pm drop off all for €45. We had a superb driver, Jazz, who was very knowledgeable, friendly & funny. The tour showed us the beauty of Madeira, 2 short walks - trainers needed. It was cloudy & rainy at the peak so unfortunately views were obscured but that couldn’t be helped. Definitely needed a jacket. Only 6 of us in the jeep so that really made it easy to talk rather than been on a big bus. Lunch was €12 for 3 courses including wine … great valve. Rum tasting was good & traditional house had a couple of tasting samples too! It was a well structured trip, well worth the money but Jazz the driver made it …. Thanks

Spent the day with Christoph (maybe not correct spelling). He was helpful, informative and made the day interesting. All round excellent experience and he ensured that English and French speaking parties were entertained at all times.

A very good tour with a knowledgeable driver. The walk was fun and the visit to the rum factory interesting with a good tasting opportunity. It was a shame that the view from the highest point of the trip was obscured by cloud and consequently cold. We would definitely use them again for another trip

This is third time we have used this company and we were not disappointed. The use of traditional Land Rover Vehicles makes the experience so much more authentic. Beware however, They are not the most comfortable seats in the rear. On the plus side, the rear seats will allow you to stand up when the roof is folded away and you go "off road". Our driver today Luis was great. He stopped often to point out Views, flora and other interesting facts about the wonderful island. Make sure you have good footwear and a warm jacket. It gets quite cool and breezy above the clouds!!

We did the tour with Ricardo, we found him to be a fantastic guide: a magnificent driver, he makes the trip very enjoyable and at the same time he makes sure that the travellers know the history of the island. One of the best guides we have ever met, we recommend him 100%.

A big group of us went on this tour yesterday (7th December) in several Jeeps... all the drivers/guides seemed excellent but we clearly had THE best 😀 ‘David’... not only was he fully informative on EVERYTHING we saw on the tour but he was so friendly and hilarious! He had us all laughing the whole way! We couldn’t have asked for a better guide... thank you David... we definitely agree that Rinaldo is the 2nd best Madeiran 😉😂... amazing tour and we recommend this tour company to everybody!

Dear Antonio showed us the east side of the island today. He knew a lot about the special places and we were able to bring our own suggestions. He was also an excellent driver and especially mastered the off-road tracks superbly. We'll be back!

The view and in general the view is a rare sight.. It must be said that our expert guide, Vitor, was able to point us to the best places to visit. We so appreciated his Formula 1 driver skills, his kindness, his culture, especially his ability to speak a lot of languages, his professionalism. Surely if you choose a tour to do to get to know Madeira better, Mountain Expedition is the best choice, in every sense! Thank you guys!
