Private Madeira Island Tour: The Most Complete 8-hour Experience

The standard itinerary included several places that we had already visited earlier in the week but Luis was happy to look at my list of desired stops and get us to each of them on a custom tour. We promptly emailed with me before I left for my trip, so we could iron out the details of our tour. He knows the island incredibly well, and also took us to his special places. He carefully maneuvered the challenging local roads, timing our arrival to avoid lines and crowds, for an absolutely terrific day. His recommendation for lunch was great and he even brought us to a small shop in his hometown for an afternoon mango gelato and smoothie. Go with a local who knows. Spend your day with Luis.

Luis was the most informative guide, respectful, especially with driving and his restaurant suggestions we bang on. We loved every minute of this tour and believe we saw the ENTIRE island.

We booked a private tour several weeks ago and had confirmation from them. The afternoon before we had an email advising there would be 4 on our ‘private’ trip. We were surprised but agreed. Unfortunately the other couple refused as wanted the ‘private’ trip we had both booked. Trip Advisor then emailed us to say our trip ( the next day) was cancelled!!!! We contacted the tour company who advised we could rebook it with them for same day but for MORE money!!!! Why did they confirm both bookings as ‘private’ then expect us both to accept it was for 4? Why then offer us the same tour but for more money? When I emailed them saying I thought this was a scam and would give them an honest review, they apologised and offered a price reduction!!! Very bad experience and very stressful!

Truly an extraordinary way to see the whole island highlights in one day. Carefully curated so your ahead of the crowds, allowed time to wander, take photos along the way. Better than I imagined. Luis explained things along the way, never rushed or hovered. He is native to Madeira and it shows the passion he has for this beautiful island. Hands down the best way to see the island in one day.

First visit to Madeira, we wanted to see the whole island and this tour with our guide Luis covered every main attraction and view points on the island. Luis made sure to adapt our tour to our request based on what we had saw. The restaurant suggestion was sublime, nice little local restaurant in porto Moniz. Amazing island!

It’s a great way to see the big hitters of the islands if you’re only here for a couple of days! Luís was a great guide and had lots of local knowledge as well as on how to avoid the crowds. Coming in January, this gave us enough time at all the places we stopped.

We recently spent our honeymoon in Madeira, and honestly… every glowing review you’ve read online is completely justified. The island is beautiful. The problem was figuring out where to start. So we booked a full-day tour with Luis to get the lay of the land. This was my first time doing a guided tour on vacation, and I was a little skeptical. Turns out it was the perfect way to kick off our trip. One thing that really impressed us was how flexible Luis was with the itinerary. When we wanted to linger longer at certain spots, he was more than happy to adjust on the fly. We ended up hitting over 10 locations across the island, each one more beautiful than the last. If you’re planning a trip to Madeira, this tour is absolutely worth it. (P.S. Don’t forget to try the poncha)

We were a bit concerned about this trip as the weather forecast suggested heavy rain starting about halfway through our 8-hour experience. But we needn’t have worried. Luis, our driver and guide, contacted us beforehand in case we did want to cancel, but we decided against it and had a wonderful day. Luis even adjusted the itinerary so that we started at the Cabo Girao viewpoint instead of visiting it last in the rain. Our route took us across the mountains on winding roads through beautiful villages to picturesque small ports. All the while Luis kept us informed with cultural, geographical, geological and even sporting insights to the areas we visited. We stopped for lunch at a restaurant recommended by Luis and later enjoyed a poncha at an interesting old bar by the sea. Luis also gave us a picnic to take back to our hotel. Light rain eventually started just as we reached our final stopping point, but nothing could dampen what was a wonderful day out. Thank you very much, Luis.

This was a perfect way to see the island. Luis our guide drove safely and carefully and was very knowledgeable about the island which he clearly loves.

We had the very best day with our tour guide Luis. He was so patient, kind and friendly and had amazing local recommendations and history to share. We enjoyed a full a exploring the entire island, the tour included a picnic snacks and all the highlight sights of Madeira! He even added a special trip to my grandparents village to see the church which was so special and appreciated. He was a fantastic driver, patient, knowledgeable. Viator, what’s this? 1.000€ for 4 persons and just a van, 4 bottles of mineral water and some cookies, dosen stops mostly on lookout spots and 9 hours of driving. Lunch not included. With that price tag we expected something really exclusive. Out driver Miguel provided a safe drive and aswered all the questions, but that should standard at any tour. This was the worst steal ever.

Luis is an amazing guide and a very personable person as well! We had an absolutely wonderful time spending the entire day with him. We enjoyed everything about this tour. The picnic lunch was a nice touch and we also had fun at the local Poncha bar he recommended where they make it fresh while you watch. Very cool! We were able to see so many sites in one day that would have been virtually impossible to do on our own. We just sat back and relaxed and he took care of the rest. Thanks again for a great time! Duarte avoided all the crowds at tourist stops and showed us the most beautiful locations on the island .. he was also very informative and knew the best local restaurants and was an excellent driver. It was a very relaxing experience overall. We would highly recommend his talents.

Had an amazing private tour of the island with local guide Luis who took us on an anti clockwise tour from Funchal. Stopped at just about all the major sites. 10 hours in total.

Luis was full of knowledge and history about Madeira. He was very accommodating and took us all the nest island sights.

This is a must if you want to get the full experience of Madeira! Louis was our guide and allowed us to personalize it a bit since we had seen some of the sites already. He let us know the tips and tricks of the island. Was extremely nice too! The drive around would’ve been too difficult if we did it on our own. I would recommend doing this excursion within the first couple of days you land so you can see what areas you want to go back and explore more.

This is a great way to explore the island when you are tight for time. Luís was very knowledgeable about all questions we had regarding Madeira. The amount that you manage to see and cover in the day makes it so worth it. The picnic is also a nice touch, with local products of Madeira.

We were so glad we got to see the beautiful island of Madeira. We loved it here. Our driver was a nice guy and amusing in his own way. He did not share very much information about the places we visited and wasnt passionate about his island. We pulled up in an old taxi which had seen much better days. The air conditioning was not working during a heat wave. Thankfully there was a breeze with the window open. He apparently was recently added on to the staff but was probably not one of the better guides. My advice would be to make sure you ask for one of the guides reviewed to do a good job and make very clear the vehicle should be clean and air conditioned

Driver (Luis) very knowledgeable. Also a good and safe driver. Saw most of the island in one day. We were able to say how long in each of the places we visited. We were surprised that snacks and water were provided. The itinerary had lots of variety of visits. Overall would highly recommend.

We had only one full day to see the island. Booked this private tour. We were met at our hotel right on time by Miguel. We explained what we wanted to see and he put together a 6 hours of a great tour of the west side of the island. He stopped at many vantage points that were alternative to the crowds. Spent time at the village he grew up in and arranged a Madeira tasting at the oldest winery on the island. Perfectly paced, and because he was born on the island, his extensive knowledge made him the perfect tour guide. Highly recommend Miguel for an incredible experience!

We booked a half day island tour which was amazing. Lus, our guide and driver was friendly and professional, very informative and put us immediately at ease. We visited so many places, plenty of stops with fantastic views, plenty of photo opportunities and nothing was too much trouble. We've booked another trip, which Lus customised to meet our needs because we were so impressed with the service and heartedly recommend Lus and his company. I booked a private tour, for myself and two friends. Picnic refreshments were included, including bottled water, fruit and local refreshments. The scenery in the mountains is spectacular and a private guided tour is definitely the best way to experience it. Will definitely book with this company when I return to Madeira

This was a very good experience. Luis our chauffeur and co-owner was very good, prepared a very good picnic kit for us and had very good knowledge about the places. The itinerary is perfect for a half day... And full day would have been tiring.

He gave us an amazing tour of the island from the port of Funchal along the southern coast then crossing the Island to the northwest and then touring back to Funchal!
