Very good and interesting tour. Learnt a lot about the history of Funchal and Madeira. Our guide Eelkje was excellent. Only slight issue was the meeting point. It said Jesuits' College of Funchal, so we were waiting out the front (and so were others) but the tour starts round the corner up the hill 100m at the University.

Itinerary
Founded by King Sebastian of Portugal in the 16th century.
The Mercado dos Lavradores ("farmers' market") is a fruit, vegetable, flower and fish market in Funchal, Madeira. The building was designed by Edmundo Tavares and opened on 24 November 1940. The facade, main entrance and fish market contain panels of tiles depicting regional themes, executed by João Rodrigues. It is divided into a number of smaller plazas and stairways that are used as sales venues.
Nightlife in the Old Town is currently a great attraction where art and entertainment come together, as the streets in the area have been transformed by the work of local and foreign artists (through a project entitled “Arte de Portas Abertas”). The project represents one of the facets of urban art and culture in the city.
Praça do Colombo
Building from 16th century served as the seat of the largest diocese in the world.
One of the three navigators responsible for the rediscovery of the island.”
We then stop at the Municipal Garden for a quick visit and after the traditional Wine Lodge, before continuing to the Jesuits’ Church.
The College Church, dedicated to Saint John the Evangelist, is a must see attraction in Funchal that impresses visitors with its incredible interiors, that includes Madeira's finest baroque and mannerist art pieces.

Amazing walking tour with a great tour guide, Jess. Saw everything we wanted to see in a very compact tour
Great value 2 hour walking tour with knowledgeable student guide who happened to be French but spoke excellent English. Covered all the bases with little Madiera tasting at the end. Meeting point is up the side of the Jesuit College not in front of the Church.
It was a beautiful walk through old Funchal with the loveliest guide. Mannu was so knowledgeable about the city’s history and she was engaged and clearly enjoyed showing us around.
Well placed walking tour around Funchal old town by knowledgeable friendly guide. She covered history of Funchal as well as culture and good advice on local traditional food. We would recommend this tour . The Madeira wine tasting at the end of the tour was a nice bonus
We learnt the most on this tour about the city and country. Lovely German and Netherlands young guides. The walk tour was a great way to get oriented on our very first day. Loved the turtles. Brilliant suggestion for authentic dinner options *A Bica" near the large open food market. Cash only for tourists. Ate there twice. Meet up is inside the university building behind the Jesuits church on the corner, below the Blandy Maderia wine.
It was a nice tour, led by a college student (not a local). She was friendly, provided lots of good info, and led our small group along a well constructed tour path. At the end, we got to try a small sampling a 4 Madeira wines, which was a nice treat. It took about 2 hours and the route was very easy with almost no steps or hills.
Great tour, guide was lovely and knowledgeable
We had a really interesting walk with a lovely guide from France. She was very knowledgeable and also interested to engage with us and chat. The wine tasting was a welcome end to a lovely two hours.
An interesting tour around Funchal. However, we felt there was limited information regarding the history of the island and city, and more could have been done to describe the architecture and culture.
Interesting and enjoyable walking tour. Recommend taking it early in a visit to Madeira. Emily was a very interesting guide.
Emile was an excellent tour guide with very useful tips and knowledge of Funchal with a bonus of some Madeura wine tasting. Great fun!
Eloan was a very knowledgeable tour guide. We learned so much about Funchal and Old Funchal. We’d book again!
Admission fee was acceptable in this day and age. We had a great experience seeing places we have not been to whilst in Funchal. Length of time great also given time to browse. There was only six in our group as we were divided in language speaking. It was fun spending time with other people during the walk 🚶 jovial atmosphere all round. Worth doing to hear a bit of history just enough not to be bored.
Very interesting tour to understand better Funchal history
The old Funchal walking tour was fantastic. The guides shared lots of information about the city and its history. The cost of the tour was good for the length of the tour and the size of the tour group. There were 6 or 8 people on the tour, and we were able to chat to each other during times when we were walking between locations. At the end of the tour we had a Madeira wine tasting where we were able to taste four different wines, a dry, semi-dry, semi-sweet and sweet.
The Old City walk was very enjoyable and our guide (Bafa) was friendly, knowledgeable and explained everything very clearly.
The guides were lovely, we were never rushed, they made sure we were always comfortable, and weee happy to answer any questions we had!! Highly recommend for a chill and relaxing introduction to Funchal!
This is a great introduction to Funchal, giving you lots of the history of the old town as well as showing you local spots for your visit. The tours are all done by university students and volunteers, with the proceeds going to support student bursaries which is a fab initiative. It also means you end up getting a great personalised tour with brilliant and enthusiastic guides. I really got a sense of the city through the walk, and ended up returning later on to a few of the places pointed out. Also: free wine tasting!
Good experience to get to know the history of the city and at the same time the old part of it!!
Excellent guided walk around old Funchal town taking in the history, sights and sounds at a comfortable pace. Eelkje conducted the tour in a friendly, informative and welcoming manner. I enjoyed the exploration of the old city hall, various churches and buildings, the painted doorways in the old streets, walking around the fruit and fish market and stopping by at nice places to eat and have a drink. Well done!
Our Dutch guide was friendly and informative - there was plenty of time to stop and take photos and ask questions.
Walking tour through Funchal with our charming host Wesley was a perfect way to end the day. We joined just one other walker for this tour, so just the 4 of us altogether at 4 pm. Meet up was easy and the tour flowed with Wesley chatting about the architecture and history of Funchal. We visited many significant sites and places of interest off the beaten path which allowed us to return to areas and buildings at our leisure. The tour lasted 2 hours and finished with wine tasting back at the university. All in all it was an excellent experience which I’d thoroughly recommend, sincere thanks to Wesley.
Well worth doing. Guide was great, she was very knowledgeable & glad we did this at the start of our holiday .
Great experience and value for money.
This was a lovely way to see Funchal and learn about its history. The time passed quickly and we really enjoyed it. David was fluent in English and explained things very well. He also gave us some great tips on places he has enjoyed eating.
Great tour and way to support the university students Got to see all the highlights of Funchal and try some Madeiran wine
The tour guide was a delight and we thoroughly enjoyed our time with her. The tour is categorized as luxury and private...I would say it is neither as it's a simple walking tour thru town and there was a group of nine of us. So, if that's what you are looking for, this is not the tour for you. That being said, we enjoyed the tour and the young women who guided us thru the town. We learned what we wanted to and were able to find our way afterwards.
Small group of 6 people. Our guide was very informative about the island and ways of island life. The walk was very gentle. My wife and I thought it was one of the best we have done
The guide was very young and her knowledge of old town Madeira was amazing and very helpful to know your way around Funchal
A very nice tour. The guide gave a very good overview of many parts of Funchal. He also shared nice historical information and tips on other museums and sites to see in the city.
The walking tour was a wonderful way to start my trip to Funchal. I was able to learn a bit about the city’s history and get my bearings in the community.
Our guide, Eleanor, was excellent. She was extremely knowledgeable about the history of Madeira and the key buildings in Funchal. She was also very helpful with providing us on our first visit to Madeira with useful information on how to get around using the local bus service and giving us good recommendations for shopping and eating. Highly recommended.
Our guide Ileana was very informative and very friendly. There was only four of us on the tour which was good. We had plenty of time to understand everything we needed to know. A very good tour
Excellent. Our guide Lilou was fantastic, she gave us a lot of knowledge about the city and great recommendations to make the rest of our stay even better. There were only 4 of us on the tour which made it more personal and meant we could chat with Lilou as she guided us around Funchal. Some beautiful sights and great knowledge about what we were seeing. I would definitely recommend.

Our guide was wonderful. She was from The Netherlands and volunteering here. She was knowledgeable and kind. We enjoyed our experience
Lovely friendly guide Anna who was very knowledgeable and informative. A good way to learn about Funchal at an easy pace. The cathedral abd church were stunning and a lovely touch was the wine tasting at the end.
V small group which made it a very relaxed and informal tour. Good range of information. Great tour guide; new for the season but very eager to offer interesting facts about Funchal. Madeira wine tasting at the end was a surprise bonus.
Great tour. Our guide was very knowledgeable and quite charming. The tour was led at a gentle pace and we covered a lot of this lovely city, learning a great deal about the history of Funchal and Madeira. There was not a single question that she could not answer! We finished of with a tasting of Madeira wine. All perfect thank you.
A very nice guide, who had a lot of knowledge about the sights in the old town of Funchal. However, he had limited information beyond the details about the specific places we stopped at, and he also did not provide any information between the stops. We assume this is because he had limited experience as a guide in Funchal, as he was 20 years old and came from the Netherlands. But we expect that once he has conducted quite a few more guided tours, he will both be more relaxed in his presentation and have more general information on his tours.
We had a lovely tour on our first afternoon in Funchal. Our guide was knowledgeable and funny and it gave us a good idea of places we wanted to visit more fully in our week there.
A good way to get familiar with old Funchal and also learn some history. Tomas was a knowledgeable guide. Due to traffic noise it was sometimes hard to hear him but he tried his best.
The walk very much depends on your expectations and the guide’s enthusiasm. Luckily, I had ILean who handled the tour very well and explained all the places of interest with the precise amount of information and fun details. Well done!
Lovely guide. She was knowledgeable and friendly. Excellent coverage of the old town. Could not have been better. And free wine!
Wesley was a charming and informed guide. We saw a lot of old Funchal at a relaxed pace Would highly recommend
Our guide was a student at the university, and she was very friendly and knowledgeable. As a solo traveler, this was a great way for me to see Funchal and meet other people
A really lovely tour around the old town with lots of information. We saw sites and learned lots about the history that shaped this beautiful town. Added bonus was that the ticket price supports students access learning and activities when otherwise they wouldn’t be able to. Highly recommended and many thanks to our lovely guide.
I highly recommend doing a walking tour when you visit a new city to really get a feel for the history and learn the little secrets that as a tourist you would be unaware of. It adds to the richness of your visit and this tour ticked all the boxes. Thankyou Dulcie for your informative, engaging tour. Nat and I really appreciated your deep knowledge of Funchal (Fennel 😁) We highly recommend when you visit this beautiful island, thank you 🙏
Our guide Ilia was knowledgeable and friendly telling us about the history and culture of Madeira and Funchal, pointing out places of interest along the way. An enjoyable tour, highly recommended.
