If you're visiting Madeira as a couple and fancy exploring the spectacular eastern side of the island without having to negotiate its hairpin bends, argue with the satnav or test your relationship on mountain roads, then Madeira Surreal's East Tour is an absolute winner! We booked the seven-hour Madeira Surreal East Tour, travelling in a comfortable Mercedes minibus with a maximum of eight passengers. It's a lovely way to explore the island, with a small group, plenty of personal attention and, most importantly, someone else doing the driving! Our driver and guide for the day was the wonderful Christina, who was friendly, knowledgeable, attentive and an absolute delight. She clearly loves Madeira and was full of fascinating information about the island, its history, culture and scenery. She looked after us brilliantly throughout the day. Our adventure began at Pico do Arieiro, Madeira's third-highest peak, where the views are supposed to be absolutely breathtaking. Unfortunately, the weather gods had other ideas and decided that a generous helping of cloud would add a little mystery to the occasion. Still, we can confirm that the clouds at that altitude are particularly impressive! Next came Ribeiro Frio, where we enjoyed the beautiful 1.5 km PR11 walk through lush greenery to a panoramic viewpoint. It's a delightful little hike, and a wonderful opportunity to stretch your legs and appreciate Madeira's extraordinary natural beauty. Then it was on to Miradouro do Guindaste, where a glass skywalk extends out above the sea. Perfect for admiring the dramatic coastline, testing your head for heights and discovering just how tightly your other half can grip your arm! By lunchtime, we'd worked up quite an appetite, so we stopped in Santana, where there are plenty of restaurants to choose from. We opted for A Espiga and enjoyed a lovely meal at a very reasonable price. Definitely a good choice! We also had the opportunity to see Santana's famous traditional Madeiran houses, with their distinctive triangular thatched roofs. They're wonderfully picturesque, although we're not entirely convinced they'd accommodate our collection of holiday souvenirs! Next stop was Porto da Cruz, where we visited the historic rum factory and sampled some authentic Madeiran rum. Let's just say this is not a drink for the faint-hearted! One sip and we understood why the islanders are so cheerful. Fortunately, Christina was still doing the driving! Our final stop was Ponta de São Lourenço, with its dramatic cliffs and spectacular coastal scenery. Even with the weather being less than cooperative, it was a magnificent place to finish our island adventure. So, did the weather spoil our day? Not in the slightest! Madeira's weather can be famously unpredictable, particularly in the mountains, and although we didn't get to enjoy every panoramic view in its full glory, that certainly wasn't the fault of Madeira Surreal. The itinerary was excellent, the scenery fascinating, the transport comfortable and Christina was an outstanding guide who made the whole experience thoroughly enjoyable. Would we recommend Madeira Surreal's East Tour? Absolutely! For couples wanting to discover the many different faces of Madeira in a relaxed, friendly and entertaining way, this is a fantastic experience. A huge thank you to Christina and Madeira Surreal for a wonderful day filled with mountains, forests, dramatic coastlines, traditional houses, excellent food and some rather enthusiastic rum! Five stars all the way! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ And Christina, thanks for looking after us so well, sharing your wonderful knowledge of the island and, most importantly, getting us safely around those mountain roads. We had a great time exploring the East side of the island with the fantastic guide Romero. He was warm, attentive and very knowledgeable. This was unbeatable value for money and I would highly recommend this to anyone else.

We originally booked two tours with Madeira Surreal, but ended up going on all three! It was such a memorable experience. Romero felt like a part of our group from the very beginning. It honestly felt like meeting an old friend who was taking us around his home country and showing us all the special places he knows and loves. The beauty, nature and breathtaking landscapes of Madeira are truly hard to put into words. It’s something you really have to experience for yourself. I cannot recommend Madeira Surreal and Romero enough. Without Romero, the experience would have been completely different. He genuinely cared about how we were feeling, what we thought, and making sure that each tour was exactly what we wanted and that we got the most out of every single day. Thank you, Romero, for three absolutely amazing days and for making our time in Madeira so special! ❤️

I am happy with the tour, the van was comfortable, the driver was pleasant and gave comments and advices on the places we visited. Be prepared for the wind and rain during the trip. It's your luck if there is no fog at Pico Arieiro and things can be seen from there.

What a fantastic experience, Romero our host and driver could not have been more helpful. His knowledge during the tour gave us a valuable insight into the history of Madeira. Romero also has a fantastic sense of humour which made the trip even more interesting. He took us to the fabulous views at Pico de Areeiro before the crowds followed by the short hike to Ribeiro Frio which had a stunning vantage point. The Miradouro do guindaste skywalk although nowhere near as high as Cabo Girão had lovely ocean views and not the crowds. We had a lovely stop for lunch in Santana to see the replica traditional Madeiran houses and then really enjoyed the stop at rum factory in Porto da Cruz where once again Romero carefully explained the rum making process. The final stop at Ponta de Sao Lourenco was amazing, the cliff views were absolutely stunning just be careful it can get quite windy but Romero made sure we understood and everyone was safe. We would totally recommend this trip especially with Romero - Obrigado

We booked with Madeira Surreal for an unforgettable private tour of Madeira’s spectacular central mountains and dramatic east coast yesterday. The day exceeded our expectations; Ramon our guide was fantastic, with a route so perfectly timed, to maximise our time in nature - rather than a minivan! we were thoughtfully ahead of crowds at each location and able to enjoy our time there relaxed, exploring without pressure. Ramon’s knowledge of the island, plants, habitats and way of life drew our attention to things in a way that has given us a much deeper appreciation of everything we saw on the tour. We felt in such good hands. If this is something you can do while visiting Madeira, you won’t regret it. Memories to last a lifetime! Thank you

Since we didn’t have the ticket for the hike, our guide Romero, drove us to rum distillery and we’ve got to try the rum and the biscuits for free! He also drove us to “secret Miradouro” which you cannot find it in any other tour 😉

Full day tour with excellent information and variety of sites. The guide was very informative and provided information in English and Spanish. We were contacted the night before to register for our PR trail registration (4.5 euros each). Pickup and drop off was at each of our hotels which made it very convenient. It was a group 8. Lunch was not included but plenty of choices available at stop in Santana.

We had a great time on the East tour. Romero was our guide and he was really knowledgeable about the island and we took his advice to set off slightly earlier than planned to miss the queues and big groups which meant we were often the only ones at the viewpoints. This was a minibus tour so there was little walking involved so it's great if you want to see the peaks and sights without spending hours trekking on foot. Overall it was excellent value for money, Romero made the day enjoyable and interesting - highly recommend.

We felt so good with Romero! The tour with him was amazing! He took us where we wanted and recomanded us many places to go of we want where we felt fantastic. On the way back he put us music that we all liked! It was a very beautiful experience and toor. We recomand Romero with all of our hearts!

Instead of driving, we had Romero as a guide. It was a very good decision. Romero took us for 2 days tour, east and west. He was open to fulfill our desires, explanation, to see the important spots of Madeira. I recommend Romero 👌.

An amazing trip to see wonderful views - above the clouds and later, overlooking the ocean. We were so lucky with the weather and Romero was an excellent guide and driver on the steep roads. We felt perfectly safe. Santana was slightly disappointing as, apart from the houses, there wasn’t much else to do (except talk to the parrot, who was very funny!). Weather in that part was drizzle and cool too so that may have coloured our opinion. But the rest of the trip is a ‘must do’ together with the trip around the west side too - which we did three days earlier.

Different from island West part, but not less impressive. Ocean and costline at the islands "tail" is wild and exciting. Views on the way down from Pico do Arieiro breathtaking and unforgettable. Guide - the best of the best - always one step ahead of the other tourist crowds.

It was our first visit to Madeira and not knowing what trip to choose we opted for the East trip and didn't regret it a bit. The views were stunning and we made a bunch of pictures, the guide, Romero, was very helpful and patient, especially when we got off the track accidentally and got lost. We went on two guided tours with Romero, and it was great. The guide was very polite, polite, and funny, without being pushy. He also shared interesting facts about the history and nature of the places we passed during the tour, not just the sightseeing spots. It was a very worthwhile trip. I was with my husband in western and eastern Madeira. I highly recommend it.

We been today at trip with Romero it was an amazing experience. From the beginning the joke and little information from him about an island makes our group closer so we talk normally all together, that something I really appreciate. We were on East round tour from Funchal. Romero was an excelent guide with fluent English and friendly behaviour. We saw many different places - Santana village, Pico Arieiro, Balcoes and other. Even the weather was not the best, we really enjoyed the trip.
